CRESPEL, Emmanuel.
Voyages du R.P. Emanuel Crespel, dans la Canada et son naufrage et revenant en France. Mis au jour par le Sr. Louis Crespel.Frankfurt am Main, Heinrich Ludwig Broener, 1752. Small 8vo (16 x 9 cm). Contemporary boards, covered with gold-brocade paper with a floral pattern coloured in a calico pattern. [8], 135, [1 blank] pp. Second edition of Crespel's account, edited by his brother Louis. Emmanuelle Crespel (1703-1775) sailed for Quebec in the Chameau in 1724. Two years later he was ordained priest and subsequently served at Fort Richelieu. While in Canada he accompanied a punitive expedition to raid the Fox Indians (in present-day Wisonsin), who were disrupting French trade around Lake Michigan. "Crespel's account provides the only account of that expedition" (Howgego). Crespel was called back to France in 1736 and left Quebec in the Renommée, which was wrecked on the southern tip of Anticosti Island after 11 days. He wintered in Anticosti, surviving famine, illness and the harrowing cold, finally reaching France in 1737.Crespel relates these adventures in the form of letters written from Paderborn (Germany) in 1742 to his brother Louis, who inscribed the present copy. With modern bookplate. In very good condition with only some minor browning and staining. The binding slightly chafed and the foot of the spine chipped. Den anderen, met het Hollandsche Oost-Indische Compagnie schip, genaamt Rustenwerk, ...Amsterdam, Bernardus Mourik, [1752 or soon after]. 4to. With 2 etched plates. Disbound. [2], 37, [1] pp. The first edition of a compelling account of two fatal voyages, of the French East Indiaman Le Prince, and the VOC ship Rustenwerk. Le Prince, commanded by Captain Morin, left the port of Lorient on 19 February 1752, sailing for Pondicherry. The voyage passed quietly until fire was discovered in the ship. It spread fast, and the ship exploded when the fire reached the gunpowder magazine, leaving only 10 survivors. The second account relates the seizure of the ship Rustenwerk, a 650-ton Dutch East Indiaman. Moored off Ternate, it was taken by the pirate Frans Fransz on 28 June 1751 and some 12 passengers (including the Captain) were killed. The survivors reached Batavia by way of Makassar and sailed for Holland. The VOC eventually managed to retake the ship, but Frans Fransz escaped with the valuable cargo. The account includes a list of 210 VOC ships lost in the period 1688-1752 through disasters, mutiny, piracy etc.In good condition. Landwehr & V.d. Krogt 437; STCN (4 copies); Tiele, Bibl. 1238.

The former includes a chapter on the fictitious Isle of Pines. The first two parts, volumes one and two of the "fencing school" satirize the rough morals, customs and traditions of Dutch country people, with lively, convincingly realistic and sometimes coarse descriptions. The vast Importance of the Countries about Hudson's-Bay to Great Britain, on Account of the extensive Improvements that many be made there in many beneficial Articles of Commerce, particularly in the Furs and in the Whale and Seal Fisheries. And, II. The interested Views of the Hudson's bay Company; and the absolute Necessity of laying open the Trade, and making it the Object of National Encouragement, as the only Method of keeping it out of the Hands of the French. To which is added an appendix; containing, I. A short History of the Discovery of Hudson's-bay; and of the Proceedings of the English there since the Grant of the Hudson's bay Charter..." Hill 1477 calls it "one of the earliest, and certainly the fullest, of the works that had hitherto been published on the Hudson Bay Territory." Robson was a surveyor for the Hudson's Bay Company, and he took a dim view of their practices, particularly in trading with the Indians. The appendices give a history of Hudson Bay discoveries. Lande 1418. Streeter 3648. Field 1312. Very good condition, with all three maps fresh and clean. Bound in full calf, antique style, with raised bands and spine label. A pretty copy of an important book.

Crespel's "relation is an important supplement to those of Sagard and Le Clerq on the same region" (Streeter). Howes C-880; Howgego, to 1800, C218; Huntress 49C; Sabin 17476; cf. [VOC - SHIPWRECK & PIRACY].
Twee-rampspoedige zee-reyzen, den enen ... met een Fransch Oost Indiesch Compagnie-schip, genaamt Le Prince, ... 1238.

Sophia Hume
Printed and Sold by Luke Hinde, London, 1752. 152 pp. Full contemporary calf leather binding; joints cracked at top and bottom, but sound, little worm damage to the margin at the back. Hume (1702-1774) was born and raised in Charleston, South Carolina, among the well-to-do, but spent the last three decades of her life proselytizing as a Quaker, in Charleston, London, and Philadelphia, following her conversion from the Anglican Church in 1738. "Among Quaker women of her day, Sophia Hume had an extraordinary knowledge of arts, literature, and theology, to some extent the product of her years as an Anglican. Although conversion curbed and guided her intellectual pursuits within limits approved by Quakers, she yet found it hard to justify erudition by a woman, and harder to justify her public life, by her own principles. The result was a paradoxical career: as a minister and writer she upheld the traditional view that woman should lead a secluded life devoted to home and church, as a Quaker bluestocking she expounded scripture and culled quotations from ancient and modern Christian writers to defend her sect" (Notable American Women). Evans 5974. Sabin 33780. Brinley 3870. Turnbull I, p. 112. Not Ex-Lib. I've done my best to describe the book, but if you have additional questions, please don't hesitate to send me an e-mail.

Small 8vo. Contemporary or near contemporary full calf, internal date 1752 (page 273). Written in a very neat hand, this manuscript book consists of 184 pages of case summaries, 44 pages of detailed contents, six pages of index, plus a further 15 pages of case summaries. All pages clean and intact. Approximately 60 pages remain blank. The entries are in broadly alphabetical order, and there are headings on apprentices, carriers & carriages, bridges, bastardy, bail, burglary, butchers, cloths, clergy, highways, tithes, treason, vagrants, weights, watermen and so on. An attractive item, which tells us a lot about the chief preoccupations of the law in the middle of the eighteenth century. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
