Stadler after designs by Repton. Contemporary red half morocco, uncut, with gold-tooled spine.

Abbey, Scenery 55; Tooley, Coloured Plates 396. First edition, first issue of this rare work on landscape design with beautiful illustrated renovation plans for the Pavilion at Brighton, dedicated to the Prince of Wales. Humphry Repton, assisted by his two sons, John Adey and George Stanley Repton, architects like their father, proposed not only a series of landscape improvements for the gardens, more suitable to such a limited site, but also suggested a redecoration of the exterior of the Pavilion in Indian style. The latter proposal Repton extensively explains and defends in the second part of the work. Humphry Repton (1752-1818) was the last great English landscape designer of the 18th century and often regarded as the successor to Capability Brown.Fine copy with large margins of this work on the renovation of the Brighton Pavilion. This issue is rare.

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Campanile di S. Andrea" "View taken from 1786 edition of the Vasi's Delle Magnificenze di Roma Antica e Moderna (first edition, in X books, published between 1747-61). The work was enlarged and reissued under the title ""Raccolta delle più belle vedute antiche, e moderne di Roma"" by Mariano Vasi after his father's death. This edition contains most of the plates from the original work, supplemented by a small number of new engravings. Vasi fils appears to have kept this edition in print for a number of years (a further edition appeared in 1803), and, as RIBA notes, the 'total [number of plates] appears to have been made up with whatever prints were to hand, in addition to a the numbered core of the work (which was itself somewhat fluid)'. Etching, in very good condition." Scalabroni, 113

"Acquaforte e bulino, 1752, firmata in lastra . "Etching and engraving, 1752, signed on plate. Example from the contemporary Roman Edition, the first state of four, printed by Piranesi in his tipography of Strada Felice. A very good impression, printed on contemporary laid paper with watermark ""double encircled fleur de lys with letters CB"", with margins, good condition. Ink addidition at the lower white margin, trasnslation of the title made by a contemporary French hand. Taken from Vedute di Roma; the whole work consists of 135 plates which have been individually produced by Piranesi along 30 years, from 1745 circa until his death. Two more works have been subsequently added, two plates by his son Francesco. They have been printed for the first time in 1751 (34 plates) by the editor Giovanni Bouchard, afterwards by Piranesi himself, publisher in Palazzo Tomati in Rome (as it is written on m,any plates), until the final edition of 137 plates. After Piranesi's death, his son Francesco inherited the plates, editing them first in Rome and then in Paris. The Calcografia Camerale, nowadays Calcografia Nazionale, has then bought the plates which are now kept inside the building." Hind n. 23, I/IV; Focillon 738.

        Campo di Fiori

"The plate shows one of the busiest squares of XVIIIth century Rome. It did not house an important church or a public building, but many inns, shops and street sellers of cooked food were located there or in the nearby streets. The gallows is a reminder that Campo dei Fiori, because of its central location, was often chosen for the public punishment of criminals, especially of heretics. It was not used to execute death penalties, but to punish lesser offences or as an instrument of torture. A rope hung from a pulley to which the culprit was tied and then he was raised and lowered to the ground several times; the street leading from Campo dei Fiori to Piazza Farnese is still called Via della Corda (Rope Street). The gallows was replaced by the 1889 mournful monument to Giordano Bruno. View taken from 1786 edition of the Vasi's Delle Magnificenze di Roma Antica e Moderna (first edition, in X books, published between 1747-61). Etching, in very good condition." Scalabroni, 98

America, das Mitternächtige, nach der Zeichnung des Herrn Wilhelm Delisle, in Verlag Joh. Justin Gebauers.

Halle/S. Gebauer , 1752 - Kupferstichkarte, 43 x 33 cm (17 x 13 inches). Sehr gut erhalten, Rückseite blanco / In very good condition, blank on verso. Selten / Rare. * A rare German language edition of Delisle's map of North and Central America. The map depicts from Baffin Bay and Greenland south through Canada and the United States, through Mexico and Central America to northern Colombia and Venezuela and from Mendocino/California in the west to Nova Scotia and Greenland in the east. It presents a peninsular California as well as a detailed depiction of the Great Lakes. The southwestern United States is labeled as New Mexico, while Mexico is known as New Spain. Florida dominates the southeastern portion of the U.S., and most of the colonies along the East Coast are labeled as well. The Midwest is labeled as the 'Pays des Ilinois' and several villages are labeled. There are myriad rivers and streams, as well as countless Native American tribes included on the map. Most of the countries in Central America, including Honduras, Guatemala (Guatimala), Costa Rica, and Panama are labeled. The title is shown as if it is engraved in stone on the upper left. Decorative cartouches include native Americans offering bowls of fruit and tusks. Also includes rolls of tobacco, bird, stag or deer, arrows, spear, feathered headdresses and garment, snakes, parasol, domestic animals such as goats, and packages. The De L'Isle family of French cartographers, like their rivals the Vaugondys , must be considered speculative geographers. Speculative geography was a genre of mapmaking that evolved in Europe, particularly Paris, in the middle to late 18th century. Cartographers in this genre would fill in unknown areas on their maps with speculations based upon their vast knowledge of cartography, personal geographical theories, and often dubious primary source material gathered by explorers and navigators. This approach, which attempted to use the known to validate the unknown, naturally engendered many rivalries. The era of speculatively cartography effectively ended with the late 18th century explorations of Captain Cook, Jean Francois de Galaup de La Perouse, and George Vancouver. Broadside, hand coloured copper engraving, 510 x 590 mm (sheet), on thick paper (unbacked and unmounted); a fine example. 2. Edita in Officina Homanniana 1752. Herausgegeben in der Homænnischen Handlung, A. 1752. [Nuremberg] : Homann heirs, 1752. Broadside, hand coloured copper engraving, 485 x 520 mm (sheet), on thick paper (unbacked and unmounted); a fine example. Rare first edition of this separately issued pair of pedagogical broadsides (individually titled, and numbered I and II) by the German engravers and publishers Homann, successors to the firm founded by the famous Nuremberg geographer and cartographer Johann Baptist Homann (1664-1724). Nissen, ZBI 1990. These beautifully illustrated and scientifically accurate large format broadsides depict and describe various species of whale and other curious marine creatures such as the sawfish and the sea louse, and include scenes of whale hunting in the Arctic and of processing blubber to make the precious commodity, whale oil. They form the counterparts to the Homanns' three separately issued broadsides on terrestial animals (elephant, rhino and crocodile - see Nissen, ZBI 1989) which were published around the same time as Abbildliche Geschichte der ausländischen Landthiere. Prior to the Homanns' broadsides, these wondrous creatures of the deep would have been known to much of their land-locked European audience only through the physical remains of them which might occasionally be displayed in Wunderkammers, or cabinets of curiosities.

Although the date on the title-page is 1752, the novel was published on 19 December 1751. Many of the comments focused on the fate of Amelia's "lovely Nose," which was "beat all to pieces," when a chariot overturned. Broken, ruined, or missing noses and their iconographic portrayal often associated the bearer or the nose, or the not-nose, with venereal disease. Fielding's narrative makes no mention of a surgical repair to the those. The author and botanist John Hill (1714 - 1775) attacked Amelia in the London Daily Advertiser on 8 January 1752 where he claimed that the book's title character "could charm the World without the Help of a Nose."       Ink and gouache on parchment, with two wax seals in the lower part (Very Good, soft folds, small smeared sports, tiny holes in parchment) 35,5 x 51,5 cm (14 x 20.3 inches). - Cleebronn, Germany, 1752. A magnificent huntsman’s certificate, with unique elaborate calligraphy in the title was issued in 1752 in Baden Württemberg, Germany, by an office of Charles Eugene, Duke of Württemberg. This highly decorative document on parchment, with an elaborate calligraphic ornament in the upper part, was made by the hunting administration of Charles Eugene (Carl Eugen), Duke of Württemberg (1728-1793), as a hunting permit for Johann Friedrich Hesselt from the Württemberg region of Zabergäu. The permit was signed and sealed at the bottom by a court head of the hunting office August Ernst von Rieben and Georg Adam Schoch. The images in the upper part, made by a skilful calligraphic hand, showcase hunting scenes with hunters on horses on deer. A deer was a heraldic animal of the house of Württemberg and from 15th century on also the most desirable animal in regional hunting. Deer’s parts were used as trophies and for medical purposes.         Antique Print-JAPAN-JAPON-JAPANESE EMPIRE-Bellin-c. 1752

      - Antique print, titled: 'Carte de L'Empire de Japon ( ).' - Map of the Empire of Japan. Centered on the Bay of Osaka, this map covers from Hirado (here identified as I. Firando) and Nagasaki to Akita (Aquita), to include most of Tokugawa (Edo) Era Japan. The island of Hokkaido is not included in this map. Various towns, harbors, bays, provinces, mountains and daimyo are noted, although many are speculative. Engraving / etching on hand laid (verge) paper. Made by 'Jacques-Nicolas Bellin' after an anonymous artist. Jacques-Nicolas Bellin (1703 - 1772) was one of the most important cartographers of the 18th century. With a career spanning some 50 years, Bellin is best understood as geographe de cabinet and transitional mapmaker spanning the gap between 18th and early 19th century cartographic styles. His long career as Hydrographer and Ingénieur Hydrographe at the French Dépôt des cartes et plans de la Marine resulted in hundreds of high quality nautical charts of practically everywhere in the world. A true child of the Enlightenment Era, Bellin's work focuses on function and accuracy tending in the process to be less decorative than the earlier 17th and 18th century cartographic work. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Bellin was always careful to cite his references and his scholarly corpus consists of over 1400 articles on geography prepared for Diderot's Encyclopedie. Bellin, despite his extraordinary success, may not have enjoyed his work, which is described as "long, unpleasant, and hard." In addition to numerous maps and charts published during his lifetime, many of Bellin's maps were updated (or not) and published posthumously. He was succeeded as Ingénieur Hydrographe by his student, also a prolific and influential cartographer, Rigobert Bonne. Condition: Very good, given age. Irregular bottom edge as issued. Original folds as issued. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully. The overall size is ca. 15.4 x 10.6 inch. The image size is ca. 12.2 x 8.8 inch. The overall size is ca. 39 x 27 cm. The image size is ca. 31 x 22.3 cm.
