The Guardian Scenes of Clerical Life

J and R Tonson, UK 1751 - Printed 1751 Later Editions of the first Guardian publications. What makes these books very special is their link to George Eliot. Hesty Mundy married Lord Roger Newdigate, owner of the vast Arbury and Harefield Estates. Lady Newdigate (Hester Mundy) gave the books to Sally Shilton in circa 1790, a coal miners daughter, who the couple had adopted in rather curious circumstances. The extraordinary story of Sally Shilton was later to be the basis of George Eliot's 'Scenes of Clerical Life'. The history of the volumes may be clearly traced from the inscriptions and book-plates which they contain, including a written note written by Sarah Shilton 'given to me by Lady Newdigate - Sarah Shilton, in Volume 2 of the books. Sir Roger Newdigate inherited the family baronetcy and estates at Harefield and Arbury whilst he was still a school boy at Westminster. On leaving UniversityCollegeOxford, Sir Roger made a Grand Tour of France and Italy. After he returned to England he set about establishing himself and in 1741 became a Tory Member of Parliament for Middlesex. Two years later he married Sophia Conyers. In 1774 his wife died and two weeks later the broken-hearted Sir Roger left on an 18 month grand tour of the continent with two relations, Charles Parker and Mary Conyers. Sir Roger returned to Arbury at the end of 1775 and the following year married Hester Mundy. Sir Roger and Lady Newdigate were childless but in the 1780s a young girl called Sally Shilton came into their lives. Lady Newdigate had heard Sally, a daughter of a coal miner, singing on a cottage doorstep. She was captivated by the girl's voice and took her to live at Arbury Hall. Sally was initially employed as a domestic servant but it seems that there was something about her that obsessed her aristocratic employers. Eventually she was taken from the servant's quarters and lived with Lord and Lady Newdigate as one of their family, effectively becoming their adopted daughter. She was educated, taught to love the arts and literature and schooled in the manners of 'polite society'. A good match was found for her and she was married to a clergyman. Years later George Eliot, who was born and brought up on the Newdigate's Arbury estate (where her father was the land manager), used the story of Sally Shilton, as the basis of one of the stories in her first novel, 'Scenes of Clerical Life'. Although she disguised the identities of Lord and Lady Newdigate (calling them 'Sir Christopher and Lady Cheveral') and of Sally Shilton (who she called 'Caterina Sarti'), the story was well enough known to cause some scandal and resentment in the Newdigate family. It is possible that the story of Sally Shilton may also have influenced George Bernard Shaw in his characterization of Eliza Doolittle in 'Pygmalion'. 2 volumes, 8vo. Contemporary full calf. Engraving to each volume. A nice clean set in 18th Cent full calf and gilt bindings.         Barbarian Cruelty; Or, an Accurate and Impartial Narrative of the Unparallel'd Sufferings and almost Incredible Hardships of the British Captives, belonging to the Inspector Privateer, Capt. Richard Veale, Commander, during their Slavery under the Arbitrary and Despotic Government of Muley Abdallah, Emperor of Fez and Morocco Third Edition. [Bound together with:] A Supplement to the Barbarian Cruelty

London: R. Walker, 1751 - Octavo (171 × 102 mm). Recent sprinkled half calf to style, red morocco label, raised bands with gilt rules, small floral tools to compartments, marbled sides. Somewhat browned, repairs to verso of 2 plates, no loss of text or image; a nicely presented copy of an uncommon book. Portrait, 5 folding plates. Third edition of the main text, first published in the same year, first edition of the supplement which contains the accounts of four of Troughton's fellow captives. "A scarce account of the adventures of the survivors of the Privateer Inspector, which was wrecked on the coast of Morocco" (Cox). One of the most infamous incidents involving the enslavement of British seamen occurred in 1746 when the ship Inspector, was wrecked in Tangier Bay, "All eighty-seven survivors were taken into captivity It was five long years before Troughton and his surviving comrades were brought back by the British Government" (Milton, White Gold p269). Troughton sets out to relate in detail, "not only an Account of the various Hardships which our now happy ransomed Slaves were obliged to undergo under the tyrannical Treatment of their respective Task-Masters, or Overseers, but a succinct Account likewise of the Country in which they were taken Captives, and of the wild and extravagant Measures which are occasionally pursued by the Emperor of the Place, whose Will alone is his Law and whose Orders, however irrational, inhuman, or unaccountable they may be, must, on no Pretext whatever, be contested or disobeyed flattering ourselves that a Narrative of such Variety of shocking Incidents, and unheard-of Cruelties, will of themselves by sufficiently amusing" (Author's Preface). So outlandish was his tale that Troughton went to great lengths construct an effective "strategy of authentication" (Colley, Captives p90). "He swore to the authenticity of his captivity narrative in front of its printer, and before the Lord Mayor of London himself, Sir Francis Cockayne. He even took twenty-one of his fellow sailors and former comrades in captivity along with him to the Mansion House to 'attest to the accuracy of his account.' Their combined testimonies, which bore the names of the seamen able to write and the marks of those who could not, were inserted as a preface to [the] published text, in a transparent attempt to reassure and convince readers before they embarked on it." Colley, Captives: Britain, Empire and the World, 1600-1850; Cox I, p. 382; Milton, White Gold: the extraordinary story of Thomas Pellow.

The Grand Magazine of Magazines; or a Public Register of Literature and Amusement

      M. Cooper, London 1751 - M. Cooper, London, 1751. January - June 1751, title-page dated 1750. 8º, pp. 492 + index. Complete with copper-engraved frontispiece, portraits of Dryden and Pope, and three folding copper-plates, one of which is a map of the Fench Settlements in North America. This volume is notable for the printing in the April issue of Gray's "Elegy written in a Country Church-yard". Gray had completed the poem in 1750, and sent a copy to his friend Horace Walpole, who had circulated it amongst the London literati. It seems that Walpole had a better understanding of the poem's importance than Gray himself. In 1751 it emerged that the publishers of the Grand Magazine were intending to published a pirated version of the poem. Gray and Walpole then persuaded Robert Dodsley, the publisher, to print and publish Gray's poem to pre-empt the pirated version. The subsequent success of his poem seems to have surprised the author, who was perhaps unconscious of the power of his own poetic imagery. Clean fresh copy, a little light browning/offsetting to folding plates. In a plain modern binding of quarter calf on paper-covered boards. Scarce.

The life and adventures of Peter Wilkins, A Cornish man: Relating particularly, His Shipwreck near the South Pole; his wonderful Passage thro' a subterraneous Cavern into a kind of new World; his there meeting with a Gawry or flying Woman, whose Life he preserv'd, and afterwards married her; his extraordinary Conveyance to the Country of Glums and Gawrys, or Men and Women that fly.       London: printed for J. Robinson; and R. Dodsley, 1751 - 2 volumes, 12mo. Late 19th-century mottled calf by Rivière and Son, smooth spines gilt in compartments, green morocco labels, sides ruled in gilt with a French fillet, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Rubbed, joints restored, a little light foxing to outer leaves, a very good copy. With 6 engraved plates (one folding) by Louis Peter Boitard, one as frontispiece to each volume; woodcut diagram in text. Bookplates of Charles George Milnes Gaskell. First edition of this interesting imaginary voyage, which has a place in the prehistory of science fiction. The story tells of a castaway in a fantastic land where men and women can fly. The debt to Robinson Crusoe is clear, also to the Arabian Nights and Gulliver's Travels, though the narrative is highly inventive on its own terms. The hero's surname is probably intended to recall John Wilkins, whose Mathematical Magick (1648) argued that man might master the art of flying. The novel was little noticed on first publication, though it was reissued in England in 1783, and there was a cheap Dublin reprint (1751), a French translation (1763), and a German abridgement (1767). The book only became popular and its author's name well known in the 19th century, when it was admired by Coleridge, Southey, Shelley, Leigh Hunt, Charles Lamb, and others of their generation. It provided material for pantomimes and melodramas from 1800 to the 1870s, and was frequently reprinted. Sabin 58394. [Attributes: First Edition]
