HISTOIRE DE LA JAMAIQUE, traduite de l'anglois par M. *** ancien officier de dragons.

Londres, Chez Nourse, 1751.2 volumes, complete set, FIRST FRENCH EDITION 1751. 12mo, approximately 165 x 95 mm, 6½ x 3¾ inches, 6 folding plates engraved by Nicolas - Jean - Baptiste de Poilly at rear of Volume II, pages: [4], 285, [1]; [2], 248, bound in contemporary calf, gilt decorated raised bands, gilt decoration in compartments to spine, gilt lettered contrasting morocco labels, edges and endpapers marbled. Covers slightly worn with some minor scrapes and a few small dark stains, 2 corners quite worn, spines rubbed at head and tail, tiny chip to top of upper hinge on Volume II, signature inked out at top of verso front endpapers, another on title pages, some pages lightly browned, some pale damp staining to a few upper margins in Volume I, to some lower margin corners in Volume II, occasional small stain, mostly to margins, no text obscured, tiny burn hole to 1 page, no loss of text, tiny worm track to fore - edge of 5 leaves in Volume II, all plates slightly misfolded and protruding slightly from text block, all have 1 or 2 small closed tears neatly repaired on reverse, piece torn off top outer corner on plate 3 with slight loss to image, the same one also has some light brown staining. Bindings tight and firm. A good set (1 defective plate as noted). This interesting work is a translation of A New History of Jamaica, also anonymous, published in London by J. Hodges in 1740 and previously published in Edinburgh in 1739 as "A new and exact account of Jamaica". This last is signed at the foot of the Dedication by Charles Leslie who has been assumed to be the author. The two English works were based in part on the section on Jamaica in Hans Sloane's "A Voyage to the Islands of Madera, Barbados, Nieves, S. Christophers and Jamaica, with the Natural History of the Herbs and Trees, Four - Footed beast, Fishes, Birds, Insects, Reptiles, &c". (London 1707 - 1725) and "A New History of Jamaica" and our French version have been described as extracts from Sloane's work and also catalogued under his name. Our author quotes Sloane's book at least 4 times in his book as well other writers such as Jean Labat (Voyages Aux Isles de l'Amerique, Paris 1742). Charles Leslie may have been a Barbadan planter of that name who settled in Jamaica around 1730 since he mentions weeping at the death of Governor Henry Cunningham in 1734 (page 127, Volume II). Both the English and French works are written in the form of 13 letters "from a gentleman to his friend", the English work had 2 maps and no plates, no maps are called for in the French version. The French version is described by some as a pirated edition as the imprint is false and it was probably printed in Paris. John Nourse of London was a publisher famous throughout Europe and his name was sometimes used by clandestine publishers there as a disguise. The book covers the history of Jamaica from the Spanish conquest to 1739, including wars against the Spanish and the French, the Spanish cruelty to the Indians, and also the government and laws. There is much on slavery including the customs and religion, the food and diseases of the negroes and great sympathy for their horrific treatment and a description of their rebellions. There is also much material on the pirates operating in that area including of course Henry Morgan to whom most of a whole letter is devoted. There is much information on methods of production of sugar and on the trade and commerce of cocoa, indigo and ginger, plus descriptions of natural history, food and drink, diseases, earthquakes, hurricanes, countryside and towns. The plates show a sugar mill, fish and a crocodile (2 plates), a coffee tree and a banana tree, peppers and ginger, figs. Sabin 35585 gives no author for our French edition, at 82167 he lists it again and attributes it to Hans Sloane. MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING, ALL ZOOMABLE. FURTHER IMAGES ON REQUEST. First Edition (Stoddard 50).With the cancelled title page (like most copies - including the one in BNF) with the two corrections to the verse from Lucretius. [The original TP was - according to Stoddard - printed in red and black and read: "Equibus ipsa modis tractetur blania Voluptas Lucr." rather than the "Et quibus ipsa modis tractetur blanda Voluptas. Lucr." found here. Scarce first edition in which the famous doctor, materialist and libertine praises pleasure and suggests a hierarchy of pleasures. "Pleasure, the sovereign master of men and gods, in front of whom everything vanishes, even reason itself, you know how much my heart adores you, and all the sacrifice it has made to you." "In The Art of Pleasure, the infamous philosophical libertine counsels an imaginary young woman not to renounce her beauty and all chance of a life of happiness for the sake of a misconceived notion of virtue; an adolescent boy who witnesses two birds mating in a tree is advised that, 'to you, everything is a living lesson in love.' What follows is a pretty little exercise in rhetorical rococo, for the boy is becoming fascinated by a gift of Love, a 'vermillion rose, whose button is only just covered over and wants to be harvested; a charming rose, every leaf of which appears covered and surrounded by a fine down the better to hide the loves, which are hidden inside.' Among all these amazing anatomical details and poetic metaphors, the author suggests, lie not only physical satisfaction but also moral fulfillment" (Philipp Blom, A Wicked Company, Basic Books, 2010, pp. 192-3). Early 20th century binding with blue marbled boards and spine with the title and date a dark blue field. A nice copy of this important and influential scandalous work by La Mettrie. HISTOIRE DE LA JAMAIQUE, traduite de l'anglois par M. *** ancien officier de dragons

Londres, Chez Nourse, 1751.. Londres, Chez Nourse, 1751.. 2 volumes, complete set, FIRST FRENCH EDITION 1751. 12mo, approximately 165 x 95 mm, 6½ x 3¾ inches, 6 folding plates engraved by Nicolas-Jean-Baptiste de Poilly at rear of Volume II, pages: [4], 285, [1]; [2], 248, bound in contemporary calf, gilt decorated raised bands, gilt decoration in compartments to spine, gilt lettered contrasting morocco labels, edges and endpapers marbled. Covers slightly worn with some minor scrapes and a few small dark stains, 2 corners quite worn, spines rubbed at head and tail, tiny chip to top of upper hinge on Volume II, signature inked out at top of verso front endpapers, another on title pages, some pages lightly browned, some pale damp staining to a few upper margins in Volume I, to some lower margin corners in Volume II, occasional small stain, mostly to margins, no text obscured, tiny burn hole to 1 page, no loss of text, tiny worm track to fore-edge of 5 leaves in Volume II, all plates slightly misfolded and protruding slightly from text block, all have 1 or 2 small closed tears neatly repaired on reverse, piece torn off top outer corner on plate 3 with slight loss to image, the same one also has some light brown staining. Christophers and Jamaica, with the Natural History of the Herbs and Trees, Four-Footed beast, Fishes, Birds, Insects, Reptiles, &c". (London 1707-1725) and "A New History of Jamaica" and our French version have been described as extracts from Sloane's work and also catalogued under his name.
