In November 1749, a year after the first installment was published, both Cleland and his publisher Fenton and Ralph Griffiths were arrested and charged with "corrupting the King's subjects." While Cleland disowned the novel in court, the book was popular enough that pirated editions began to appear. Griffiths published an expurgated version of the book in March of 1750, but was prosecuted once again for it, although the charges were subsequently dropped. It is considered "the first original English prose pornography, and the first pornography to use the form of the novel". It is one of the most prosecuted and banned books in history, not being published legally until 1963 in the United States and 1970 in England.; BB consignment; shelved case 3. The scene depicting homosexual intercourse between men, which Fanny witnesses through a hole in the wall, is expurgated on page 232, as is the case with all copies of this edition. LAW, John.
Glasgow: R. & A. Foulis, 1750. Octavo (149 x 86 mm). Contemporary calf, label lost, spine ruled in gilt. Terminal advertisement leaf present. Worn and rubbed, joints split but holding, paper fault to pp. 137/137 impinging slightly on lettering, some light browning and foxing to contents, running damp stain at head for most of the second half of the book. A good, unsophisticated copy. First Foulis press edition, originally published in 1705. Money and Trade Considered was the seminal work of the Scottish financial adventurer and French finance minister John Law (1671-1729), in which he argued that an expansion of the money supply would produce an expansion in output and consequently an export surplus. He therefore proposed that Scotland should expand the money supply backed up with the security of the land. His ideas were put into practice by the French state with the creation of the Mississippi Company, with its subsequent bubble and collapse often blamed on Law's monetary theories. His ideas have been seen as proto-Keynesian, in both a favourable and a negative light. The Foulis Press was renowned for the quality of their paper, typography and book design; they published a second edition of the work in 1760. ESTC T97294; Gaskell, Foulis Press, 159; Goldsmiths' 8531; Kress 5047.

These include Lord Southwell, Admiral Martin, Admiral Bing, Admiral Fox, Lord Montague Bertie, Sir John Cross and several naval captains. This account was reprinted in Dublin in 1750. Both are scarce. Concerning the London edition, OCLC locates 11 copies, 3 copies in North America, 1 in a law library (University of Minnesota). English Short-Title Catalogue T25541.

This work, published in the Austrian city of Linz, discusses the lives and papacies of the popes in a chronological manner. While the contents of this work are desirable, the binding of this example is the most intriguing element and is most exquisite! In 1750, copies of Bury's 'Pontificum' were bound with oxidized gold-stamping on the decorative covers. This example retains much of the original gold that was stamped into the leather. Vaugondy, Gilles Robert de. (1688 - 1766).
[Paris], 1750. Beautifully Handcoloured Original Engraving (copper). Beautifully framed. Size of frame with map: 69.5 cm x 73.5 cm. Map itself measures: 53 cm wide x 50 cm high. Excellent condition of this beautiful original 18th century map. Gilles Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766), also known as Le Sieur or Monsieur Robert, and his son, Didier Robert de Vaugondy (c.1723-1786), were leading cartographers in France during the 18th century. In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV. Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes were made by gluing copperplate-printed gores on a plaster-finished papier-mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, employing several specialists. In some cases it is uncertain whether Gilles or Didier made a given map. Gilles often signed maps as „M.Robert", while Didier commonly signed his maps as „Robert de Vaugondy", or added „fils" or „filio" after his name. The Robert de Vaugondys were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family through Sanson's grandson, Pierre Moulard-Sanson. From him, … [Click Below for Full Description]

Giandomenico TIEPOLO (Venezia 1727 - 1804)
"Ethcing and engraving, 1750 circa, inscriber lower margin "Joannes Dominicus Tiepolo/ invenit pinxit et delineavit". Example of first state, of two, before number 7 added at upper right. A magnificent example, printed with tone on contemporary laid paper, showing margins on three sides and trimmed to the platemark at the right edge. PARADIS, Louis.
Paris, c.1750. Sheet 370 x 570mm. Trimmed to neatline, mounted in contemporary album paper, small scrape in title area. A French plan of Madras drawn after the French captured the English trading post during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-48). The English forces surrendered in the face of a heavy bombardment from a French fleet. The French then held it until the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle swopped Madras for Louisbourg in Canada. The plan of Madras was drawn by Captain Louis Paradis, an engineer with the occupying force. Because the French reneged on their promise to hand over Madras to the Nawab of the Carnatic, the Nawab sent 10,000 troops to insist the deal be fulfilled: Paradis commanded only 230 Europeans and 700 sepoys, yet easily routed the attackers. The map was in 'Mémoire pour le sieur de La Bourdonnais, avec les pièces justificatives', in which Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais, the commander of the French Fleet, had to justify the easy terms he gave the English garrison on their surrender.

"A beautiful example of Bellin's world map on Mercator's projection. Engraved by J.Van Schley and published in the Hague with English, French and Dutch titles, the map accurately reflects the knowledge of the time - pre-Cook Australasia and the Pacific Northwest remain uncharted, with Japan mapped in a rudimentary way. North America displays the mythical River of the West potentially linking the Pacific to the Great Lakes. From Prevost's ""Histoire Generale des Voyage"", The Hague, Pierre de Hondt, 1750. Engraving, with decorative rococo and foliate titlepiece, in very good conditions."
