Nieuw natuurlyk toverboek, of alle de kunststukken van den ridder Pinetti de Mercy, tot navolging gemaklyk gemaakt en uitgelegd.Amsterdam, Gerbrand Roos, 1817. 8vo. Modern paper wrappers.

Cf. Cat. Van Rijn 1184 (other work on Pinetti); not in NCC; Saalmink; WorldCat. Very rare first edition of the Dutch translation of a description and explanation of 70 conjuring and magic acts performed by the famous Italian magician Jean Joseph Pinetti Willedall de Merci (1750-ca. 1803). The German philosopher and mathematician Johann Wilhelm Andreas Kosmann (1761-1804) based his explanations on Pinetti's own work Amusemens physiques (Paris, 1784), and on Henri Decremps's Magie blanche devoilée (Paris, 1789). All the tricks are described in great detail, they often including the voluntary help of persons chosen from the public, and are subsequently explained by the author. The original German was first published at Berlin in 1799. Kosmann mentioned he had refrained from publishing the book until Pinetti had finished his shows at Berlin. Still, the book raised Pinetti's anger, who took the matter to court, accusing the author of insult. Some minor foxing, some leaves creased, otherwise in good condition, wholly untrimmed.

         SONETTI.

Conservazione assai fresca.. DBIt V, pp. 163-166..

In 1757, Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy published The Atlas Universel, one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. To produce the atlas, the Vaugondys integrated older sources with more modern surveyed maps. They verified and corrected the latitude and longitude of many regional maps in the atlas with astronomical observations. The older material was revised with the addition of many new place names. In 1760, Didier Robert de Vaugondy was appointed geographer to Louis XV.Gilles and Didier Robert De Vaugondy produced their maps and terrestrial globes working together as father and son. Globes of a variety of sizes were made by gluing copperplate-printed gores on a plaster-finished papier-mache core, a complicated and expensive manufacturing process, employing several specialists. In some cases it is uncertain whether Gilles or Didier made a given map. Gilles often signed maps as M.Robert, while Didier commonly signed his maps as "Robert de Vaugondy", or added "fils" or "filio" after his name. The Robert de Vaugondys were descended from the Nicolas Sanson family through Sanson's grandson, Pierre Moulard-Sanson. From him, they inherited much of Sanson's cartographic material, which they combined with maps and plates acquired after Hubert Jaillot's death in 1712 to form the basis the Atlas Universel.          Neu Inventirter und aus glaubwürdigsten Archiven und Documenten. Genealogischer Stamm-Baum des Uhralten Hochfürstlichen Hauses Baaden .

Artist: Seutter Matthias ca ; issued in: Augsburg; date: ca1750 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 58n x 49,5; - description: Family tree of the royal house of Baden-Baden, or House of Zähringen. Zähringen is the name of an old German noble family in Swabia, who founded a large number of cities in what are today Switzerland and the German state of Baden-Württemberg. The name is derived from Zähringen castle near Freiburg im Breisgau, now in ruins, which the dukes founded in 1120. While the junior line who first assumed the title 'Duke of Zähringen', a cadet branch of the House of Baden, became extinct in 1218, the senior line persists and currently uses the title 'Margrave of Baden, Duke of Zähringen'.; - vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

The History of Tom Jones, a Foundling

      A. Millar, London 1750 - Fourth edition. xx, 304; viii, 330; x, 288; xii, 347, [1] pp. 12mo. Sheridan's Tom Jones. Richard Brinsley Sheridan's (1751-1816) copy of the fourth edition of Tom Jones. In 1778 Sheridan and David Garrick brought Fielding's lost play The Fathers: or, the Good-Natur'd Man to Drury Lane for the benefit of Fielding's widow. A manuscript fragment of the play had been found among the papers of Sir Charles Hanbury Williams and identified as Fielding's by Garrick. It ran for nine nights, the house packed with Fielding's friends, and brought his widow Mary much needed relief. As a playwright Sheridan was inheritor of Fielding's wild comic spirit, and his most famous creation, Mrs. Malaprop from The Rivals (1775), is drawn from Fielding's Slipslop, a "mighty Affecter of hard Words" in Joseph Andrews. Sheridan would have undoubtedly read Tom Jones closely and with great interest.Demand for copies of Fielding's masterpiece, arguably the greatest English novel of the 18th century, was so great that all 2,000 copies of the first edition were bought up by the trade before the book's publication on 28 February 1749. A second edition of 1,500 copies, being a paginary reprint of the first, was ordered. There followed a third edition of 3,000 copies, entirely reset and reduced to 4 volumes, and this fourth edition of 3,500 copies, carrying the date 1750 but printed in September and published on 11 December 1749. According to Battestin, this edition "represents [Fielding's] final conception of his masterpiece" (Henry Fielding: A Life, p. 452). It was for years the most readily available edition, as the fifth was not printed until 1763. Cross III, p. 317; Grolier English 48; Rothschild 450. Provenance: Richard Brinsley Sheridan (bookplate in each volume); Louis & Anne Marie Davidson (bookplate) Contemporary mottled calf, gilt, red morocco spine labels. Chipped and worn, front hinges in vols. I & II repaired, small paper repair to margin of vol. II title xx, 304; viii, 330; x, 288; xii, 347, [1] pp. 12mo
