FOKKE, Simon.
[12 drawings of Old Testament scenes].Amsterdam, 1783. Twelve pen and ink wash drawings (each ca. 8 x 6.5 cm) in subtle shades of grey and sepia. All 12 drawings mounted on a single contemporary stiff paper support (44 x 61 cm), neatly arranged in three rows of four, each with a border of lines drawn around it in ink. A contemporary pencil inscription below the lower right drawing reads "S. Fokke Amsterdam 1712-1784". Another in a later hand in the lower right corner of the support reads "S. Fokke". A set of drawings by Simon Fokke (1712-1784) made as models for the illustrations in J.F. Martinet's Alle de werken van Flavius Josephus (Amsterdam 1783-1787). The 12 pen and ink wash drawings vividly depict Old Testament scenes, very beautifully drawn and so subtly washed in a rich pattern of greys and sepia that the spaces left blank seem to radiate fire and sunlight. The engravings made from these drawings are in reverse and have 2 scenes on each plate.Simon Fokke was one of the most important artists of the second generation of 18th century book illustrators. According to E. de La Fontaine Verwey, he was a spontaneous and very gifted draughtsman and an expressive designer, who sometimes even engraved a plate without first drawing a model.A fine set. Poortman 54; cf. E. de la Fontaine Verwey, Illustr. letterk werken XVIIIe eeuw, pp. 70-85 & passim; Scheen I, p. 343; Waller, Biogr. woordenboek, p. 102; Wurzbach I, 2 p. 544.

[View - Optics - Mecca]
Paris, Louis Mondhare, 1750. Optica-print view of Mecca on laid paper (32 x 46 cm), with some parts highlighted in contemporary hand colour. An imaginary view of the port of Mecca, showing the supposed harbour connected to the Red Sea, published by Louis Mondhare, a well-known publisher of so-called optica prints. The print, meant for viewing through a "zograscope" - a viewer with a large lens and mirror giving an illusion of depth - emphasizes perspective and shows the straight lines characteristic of optica prints. In good condition, crudely hand-coloured.

London, um, 1750. Tabakverpackung mit dem mittigen Bild und breitem Rand. Rückseitig ein weiterer Kupferstich in schlechter Druckqualität: Maria Teresia. The best Virgins, London. [Click Below for Full Description]

[COSTUMES - CARNIVAL].
31, [1 blank] pp.Very rare, first and only published part of a series of hand-coloured carnival costume plates, each of the 12 with a letterpress description in German and French. Only plates 9 and 10 bear the name of the German draughtsman and engraver Friedrich Wilhelm Nettling, best known for his portrait of Bach, but all may have been engraved by him. The mostly comical or farcical plates illustrate a fairy with her ??entourage, a Chinese man, Don Quixote and Sancho Panza, a group of beast people and many other extraordinary figures. Two figures in one plate wear funnels as hats, like the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz. Besides the 12 plates in the booklet itself, the engravings on the boards show two male figures (gymnasts?, one in a clown-like costume) on the front and a dancing woman with a tambourine on the back. With some minor stains and the front of the binding slightly damaged in the lower margin and lower right corner, spine cracked. ANSON, George.
Amsterdam?, c.1750. Coloured. 540 x 430mm. New margin on the left hand side. A large chart of the Philippines from Anson's account of his circumnavigation, one of the last great buccaneering voyages. One of their main targets was the Spanish teasure ships crossing the Pacific between Mexico and the Philippines. A stroke of luck presented them with the 'Nuestra Senora de Cavadonga', laden with silver. On their return to London, thirty-two wagons were needed to transfer the loot to the Tower of London. Although this map is titled in French it is not the usual map found in French editions of Anson's account, having a rococco border around the title. Signed with the initial 'H' lower right, it is probably Dutch. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[BUFFON, Georges Louis Leclerc, Comte de, and Louis J.M. DAUBENTON].
Each vol. ca. 650 pp.Very rare first edition of the German translation of Buffon's famous Histoire naturelle. Buffon's work presents ''for the first time a complete survey of natural history in popular form'' (PMM). The first volume contains Buffon's theoretical essays, including his essay on the earth where "for the first time he outlines a satisfactory account of the history of our globe and of its development as a fitting home for living things. In his view the earth had been originally part of the sun which was broken off by the impact of a comet. It gradually condensed from its gaseous state, and the forces shaping its continents and mountains are still active'' (PMM). This view of the universe not in a steady state but evolving was a revolutionary idea at the time, paving the way for Darwin in the following century. In his treatise on humans (volume II.1), Buffon ''studied the human species by the same methods that he applied to animal species, including the psychological, moral, and intellectual life of man. From his exhaustive research for the Histoire naturelle des quadrupèdes, Buffon came to the conclusion that it was necessary to reintroduce the notion of family. Breaking with the spirit of his time, Buffon attempted to separate science from metaphysical and religious ideas. As a disciple of Locke he denied idealistic metaphysics, stating that mental abstractions can never become principles of either existence or real knowledge; these can come only as the results of sensation'' (DSB). Volumes II-VIII deal with quadrupeds. The German edition was begun in 1750 but … [Click Below for Full Description]

FRIEDRICH II (FREDERICK II), Holy Roman Emperor.
XVIII, 198; [4], 228 pp.Important scholarly edition, the first (and only?) edition with the extensive commentaries by Johann Gottlob Schneider (1750-1822), of the most important Mediaeval work on hawking, "still one of the best" (Harting), and an important ornithological and zoological work in general, written by the Holy Roman Emperor Freidrich II (1194-1250). "By far the greatest contribution to zoology was due, mirabile dictu, to the Emperor Frederick II. His treatise on falconry, De arte venandi cum avibus, was completed by 1248. ... It is an astounding work, taking into account the Greek and Arabic literature on the subject, but essentially based upon the author's own observations and experiments, and upon the information elicited by himself from his Muslim advisers. It set forth a number of new anatomical facts ... and discussed bird migrations and the mechanical conditions of flight. Frederick even instituted experiments to determine how vultures were attracted to their prey. ... I said that Frederick's knowledge was partly derived from Muslim writings. Indeed an Arabic treatise was translated for him by his astrologer and secretary, Theodore of Antioch, and another in Persian was also known to him" (Sarton). It is followed by another celebrated 13th-century treatise on falconry: Albertus Magnus's De falconibus asturibus et accipitribus. It was originally part of his De animalibus, where it comprised more than half of the text. Volume II contains Schneider's commentaries, with a 6-page Latin-German glossary of the technical terms, a 20-page review of the literature an … [Click Below for Full Description]

MARUM, Martinus van.
VIII, 42, 4; VIII, 72; VIII, 84 pp.First edition of the German translation of a work by Martinus van Marum (1750-1837) on his "huge electric machine" ("großen Elektrisier-Maschine"). In 1784 Van Marum was appointed director of Teyler's cabinet of curiosities and the library in Haarlem. "... soon he obtained a large electrical machine made under his supervision by John Cuthbertson of Amsterdam. Its disks had a diameter of sixty-five inches, the largest possible at the time. Van Marum thought that results obtained with such enormous discharges were bound to bring order to the chaos of concepts about the mysterious 'electrical matter'. He described the experiments with this machine and great battery of Leyden jars in three volumes of Verhandelinge uitgegeven door Teyler's tweede genootschap (1785, 1787, 1795)" (DSB). The present work contains the German translation of the descriptions of the experiments with the largest electrostatic generator of the 18th-century. The engraved plates show the enormous machine, its functioning and conducted experiments. The 8 hand-coloured plates in the second part illustrate the calculations of various metals and binary alloys. "These experiments were greatly admired and repeated all over Europe ... Van Marum concluded that Franklin was correct in his theory of a single electric fluid ... Volta also greatly admired van Marum's work..." (DSB). Browned throughout, minor foxing and some occasional small spots. Binding slightly worn and rubbed along the extremities. Overall a good copy.l Dibner, Early electric machines, pp. 43-49; DSB IX, pp. 151- … [Click Below for Full Description]

TECHNICAL BROADSIDES
Nürnberg: Heirs of J.B. Homann, 1750. A COMPLETE SET IN CONTEMPORARY COLOR. To be displayed in classrooms, huddled over on desks or mounted in albums, these educational charts demonstrate the principles of friction, statics and dynamics outlined in the works of French physicist Guillaume Amontons (1663-1705) and engineer Bernard Forest de Bélidor (1698-1761). The fifty-three figures of simple machines, counterweights and pulleys are explained and provided with mathematical proofs, so the student can apply the principles demonstrated to practical problems in construction, manufacturing and transportation. Rost (d. 1764) was a master violist, a draftsman and a lecturer in mathematics at Nürnberg about 1750. Seligmann (d. 1762) engraved natural subjects and sold art in Nürnberg. I have not located a complete set outside of Europe. In nice condition (once bound vertically in an album on stubs, old manuscript numeration on versos). ¶For Rost, see Nürnberger Künstlerlexikon III: 1266.

[ABC BOOK].
Correttissima Santa Croce per facilissima istruzzione de' fanciulli.[Rome], Francesco Ansillioni, [ca. 1750]. Small 8vo. With 2 nearly full-page woodcuts (the Holy Virgin on the front cover and a monk with a shining nimbus containing the word "charitas" around his head on the back cover) and 7 small religious woodcuts in text. Front and back cover and the first two pages with alphabets and numbers in ornamental woodcut borders. Sewn. [16] pp. Only copy located of a Latin ABC book for children, published in Italy, starting with alphabets on the back of the title-page and continuing on the next page, also introducing the Latin names for the punctuation marks and including reading exercises in one-syllable words. As in many ABC books, the alphabets are followed by the most important prayers and texts from the catechism, for example the Lord's Prayer, which is followed by the Ave Maria and some other prayers in Latin to the Holy Virgin, Benedictus, Angelus Dei, antiphons, a list of symbols of the twelve apostles, prayers for during the mass, litanies (for example of the Blessed Virgin Mary), etc. This tiny book shows the strong 18th-century connection between children's education and religion: when learning to read and to write, the young children had to concern themselves with religious texts. We couldn't trace any other copy of this rare ABC book, which is beautifully illustrated with small religious woodcuts. The book collates A-B4.Some water stains, otherwise in good condition. A very rare Latin ABC book.

Plans et journaux des sieges de la derniere guerre de Flandres.Strasbourg and the Hague, Pierre Gosse junior, 1750. 4to. With 25 folding engraved maps with some hand-coloured details. Contemporary vellum. [8], 113, [1 blank] pp. First edition, Gosse issue (one of two simultaneously published issues), of a richly illustrated account of sieges of Flemish towns during the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748). Each journal has its own folding plate, showing a ground plan of the besieged city and its fortifications with the "plan des attaques" highlighted in yellow. Included after the preliminaries is a table with a survey of the besieged towns, with the dates of the sieges, the days the battles took place, and the names of the leaders of the attacking and defending army. IRIARTE (YRIARTE) y Oropesa, Tomas de.
[4], 157, [16] pp.First edition of the best-known work of the famous Spanish neo-classical poet Tomás de Iriarte (or Yriarte) y Oropesa (1750-1791). His name is most intimately associated with the present Fábulas literarias (1782), composed in a great variety of metres, and known for its humorous and satirical attacks on literary men and methods, many aimed at Juan Pablo Forner (1756-1797). R. Merit Cow writes: “The appearance of the literary fables of Tomas de Iriatre definitely established him as the great literary arbiter of his day ... With the publication of his collection of poetry, his dominance of the literary scene ... was now hailed from all sides. He was considered from this time forth one of the first, if not the first.” Schopenhauer characterizes the poems as the “allerliebsten litterarischen Fabeln” (Parega, p. 255).With the owner's inscription “Catherine de Courlande” on the title-page: Katharina Friederike Wilhelmine Benigna (1781-1839), Princess of Courland (western Latvia) and Duchess of Sagan. She is mainly known for her relationship with Klemens Metternich, the Austrian chancellor and negotiator at the Vienna Congress in 1813. Fine copy of a well-printed literary first edition in an attractive binding and with an interesting provenance.l Brunet V, col. 1512 (“belle édition”); E. TIEPOLO, Giovanni Battista (1696-1770)
Venice, 1750. From the Collection of Arthur & Charlotte Vershbow. The complete set of ten etchings, plates 140 x 180 mm, sheets 235 x 305 mm, good to very good impressions, with wide margins (occasionally uneven), three plates with a capital R watermark, one with O, and two with an indistinct proprietary mark, presumably from the edition published by G. Manfrin in 1785, with stitching holes in the left margin. In generally good condition. Each sheet mounted in a modern cloth solander box. Provenance: purchased from Hellmuth Wallach, 1954. Tiepolo began making prints in the 1730s, and the Vari Capricci was his first set of etchings. Having studied in the collections of Anton MariaZanetti the Elder and Zaccaria Sagredo, this series is a personal response to the prints and drawings of Salvator Rosa and Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione. They generally show groups of figures at rest or in contemplation: pastoral landscapes with soldiers and young boys, a horse and rider with a groom, women and children with goats and other animals. The ancient or Arcadian world is occasionally evoked, with figures set beside tombstones, classical urns and fragments of obelisks. In one print the figure of Death is shown reading from an open book, faced by a group of the living. "From about 1742 Zanetti began including theVari Capricciin his own volume of woodcuts, theRaccolta di Varie Stampe, writing to the Prince of Lichtenstein in 1751 that he had added prints by Tiepolo, '"being of a most spirited and piquant taste and worthy of the highest esteem."
