An appeal to the common sense of Scotsmen, especially those of the landed interest, and more especially freeholders, if their own conduct be not the source of their misery? And, if their own vigorous efforts be not the only mean of their relief? Together with a proposal of the last importance for saving the country from ruin, and preventing future insurrections and other dismal consequences of extreme poverty and want; in answer to the groans of its wretched inhabitants.

Edinburgh: printed by W. Sands A. Murray and J. Cochran. Sold by J. Traill and other booksellers 1747 - 8vo., (2) + 10 + 66pp., complete with the half-title, lower margins trimmed (nowhere near printed surface) removing ink ms. notes, half-title a bit soiled, 19th century half calf, spine gilt, some wear to marbled paper sides but a good crisp copy. First and only edition: rare.Goldsmiths 8278. Hanson 6057. Not in Kress. ESTC & OCLC together locate a total of only 10 libraries with copies, of which only the McMaster + Yale + Spencer Research libraries in N.America. A good and pretty hard-hitting critical survey of Scottish industry in the chaotic period just after the 1745 Jacobite fiasco. 'Edinburgh, the centre of home trade, the metropolis of the country, whence the demands of the landed gentlemen throughout the whole nation are continually supplied; and which, if profitably occupied, would be the mother and nurser of our manufactures, and a source of riches to the nation, is at present a disgrace, as well as a ruin to Scotland; the traders in it being employed in importing goods fitted to create expence, and which tend to stop the consumption of our own manufactures; and the numerous hands are employed in levying the rents of the poor landed gentlemen, which ought to be applied for their own interest, in employing their own people, and remitting these for the employment and support of others. These things are sad truths, and no doubt are the springs of the destruction of the country.' [Advertisement pp.7-8]. There is inevitably much here on the Scottish woollen trade. It incorporates, for example, Proposals for establishing the Scots woollen manufacture>, dated February 19, 1747, in which Alexander Mason, an Edinburgh merchant with shop premises in Luckenbooths, appointed manager to the Company for Promoting the Woollen Manufacture in Scotland, is also appointed recipient for subscriptions. Eine der schönsten Ausgabe einer Malerschule die wir je gesehen haben. Johann Daniel Preissler (1666, Nuremberg – 1737) was a notable member of a German artistic family, originating in Bohemia. His children included Johan Martin Preisler, Georg Martin Preisler and Johann Justin Preissler, all artists. Most notable for his portraits, nudes and history paintings, he also produced drawings and frescoes. He was also known beyond Nuremberg for his "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic" (full title: "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic oder Gründlich verfasste Reguln deren man sich als einer Anleitung zu berühmter Künstlere Zeichen-Wercke bestens bedienen kann"), a sequence of works on art-theory – the individual works were translated into several other languages and served as textbooks for students such as the Swiss Salomon Gessner right up until the 19th century. By the time of his death in 1737, Johann Caspar Füssli spoke of Preissler and Jan Kupecky as the two most famous Nuremberg artists of the early 18th century. He received his first artistic training in his home town under his father, the history painter and portraitist Daniel Preissler (1627–1665), continuing his education in the studio of Johann Murrer. From 1688 to 1696 he stayed in Italy, including periods in Rome and Venice. In 1705 he became the director of Nuremberg's Academy of Fine Arts, which under his leadership turned into a city institution. In 1716 he founded the Zeichenschule (drawing school), open to "poor people's children" – it proved a great success. With 71 students entering in the first year, its intake was so large that in 1721 Preissler began producing the teaching materials which later became his "Die durch Theorie erfundene Practic" – he had previously only published academic works, such as ones on anatomy. Preissler also wrote on the academically neglected topics such as ornament and flower-drawing (in 1725) and landscape drawing (1739), though throughout his writing he insisted that these were only beginners' lessons.         SAMMELBAND OF FIFTEEN 17th-CENTURY BRITISH TRIAL ACCOUNTS FOR SERIOUS CRIMES AGAINST THE KING, PLUS ONE LATER TRIAL ACCOUNT FOR THE LAST BRITISH SUBJECT TO SUFFER EXECUTION BY BEHEADING].

London. 1679-1686, 1747. - Publication details and pagination provided in the listing below. 20th- century tan buckram, spine gilt, leather label. Minor edge wear, soiling and staining, small gouge to top of front joint, binding broken after p.2 of first work. Library stamp to first titlepage, some short edge tears. Good. An interesting collection of 17th-century English trial accounts. Some of the works touch on or directly involve the Popish Plot, a fictitious anti-Catholic conspiracy that resulted in the executions of over twenty people. Titus Oates was the instigator of the conspiracy and his trial for perjury is present here. The trial of William Scroggs here also related to the Popish Plot - Scroggs was the chief justice of the court during the trials of those accused in the Popish Plot and is largely responsible for their convictions. The trials involving the Popish Plot here come towards the end of the hysteria. Also present here are two works relating to the trial of Elizabeth Cellier. Known as the "Popish Midwife," Cellier also suffered the vehement anti-Catholic sentiment prevelant in England at the time. She was acquitted of attempting the King's kidnapping in the "Meal-Tub Plot;" but her expose of that matter, "Malice Defeated" led to her trial for "Scandalous Libel," for which she was fined, pilloried and her book burnt.         A SUMMARY, HISTORICAL AND POLITICAL, OF THE FIRST PLANTING, PROGRESSIVE IMPROVEMENTS, AND PRESENT STATE OF THE BRITISH SETTLEMENTS IN NORTH-AMERICA; WITH SOME TRANSIENT ACCOUNTS OF THE BORDERING FRENCH AND SPANISH SETTLEMENTS. No. 7 [- No. 8]

Boston: Printed and sold by Rogers and Fowle in Queen-Street, 1747. Two parts, 97-112; 113-128pp. Printed wrappers containing titlepage on front and publisher's advertisements on the rear. Stitched as issued. Some light wear and soiling. Very good. Two parts of Douglass' important work, which was published in serial fashion by Boston publishers and booksellers Rogers and Fowle. Each number was published as an irregular supplement to the AMERICAN MAGAZINE, and the whole work would eventually comprise two lengthy volumes. These two parts are interesting because they show a different form of publication for mid-18th-century colonial America, and the rearmost leaf contains ads both for newly published and imported books. "First American history of the whole country" - Howes. Douglass was a Scottish physician living in Boston. Although not a work noted for its accuracy, Wroth comments, "Modern critics of the SUMMARY have overlooked the fact that its author was the first to attempt this story from the viewpoint of a resident American...," and further quotes a contemporary critic in the MONTHLY REVIEW as finding it "a fuller and more circumstantial account of North-America, than is any where else to be met with." In his PRESENT STATE OF NORTH AMERICA (London, 1755) John Huske wrote: "There is not one Work yet published to the World in our Language that in any Degree deserves the Title of a History of North America, but Smith's HISTORY OF VIRGINIA, and Douglass's SUMMARY...And this last is only valuable for being the best Collection of facts in general, for a future Historian, that was ever made or published." An interesting peek at colonial publishing history, and a work of major importance in the writing of American history. HOWES D436. CLARK I:226. WROTH, AMERICAN BOOKSHELF, pp.87-91. SABIN 20726.       - S.n., A Peine S.d., In-16 (8x13,7cm), (2) viij, 337pp.. - originale, insolito Edition. A SUMMARY, HISTORICAL AND POLITICAL, OF THE FIRST PLANTING, PROGRESSIVE IMPROVEMENTS, AND PRESENT STATE OF THE BRITISH SETTLEMENTS IN NORTH- AMERICA; WITH SOME TRANSIENT ACCOUNTS OF THE BORDERING FRENCH AND SPANISH SETTLEMENTS. No. 7 [- No. 8].

Boston: Printed and sold by Rogers and Fowle in Queen-Street, 1747. - Two parts, 97-112; 113-128pp. Printed wrappers containing titlepage on front and publisher's ads on the rear. Although not a work noted for its accuracy, Wroth comments, "Modern critics of the SUMMARY have overlooked the fact that its author was the first to attempt this story from the viewpoint of a resident American.," and further quotes a contemporary critic in the MONTHLY REVIEW as finding it "a fuller and more circumstantial account of North-America, than is any where else to be met with." In his PRESENT STATE OF NORTH AMERICA (London, 1755) John Huske wrote: "There is not one Work yet published to the World in our Language that in any Degree deserves the Title of a History of North America, but Smith's HISTORY OF VIRGINIA, and Douglass's SUMMARY.And this last is only valuable for being the best Collection of facts in general, for a future Historian, that was ever made or published." An interesting peek at colonial publishing history, and a work of major importance in the writing of American history. HOWES D436. CLARK I:226. WROTH, AMERICAN BOOKSHELF, pp.87-91. SABIN 20726.         Leger B of Henry Dewitt & Dirk W. Ten Broek in Company, 1738 (sic)

Kingston, NY, 1747. Good +. A ledger from the transitional period from Dutch to English control in colonial New York, showing the Dutch roots of the state's commerce and culture. The manuscript account book was for the company of Henry Dewitt and Dirk Tenbroek, merchants in Kingston NY and is written in Old Dutch. Most of the early names recorded in the ledger are Dutch, while the later 1740s, they are written in English. The ledger also includes a 1740 record of a slave purchase by Philip Livingston, a statesman of Dutch lineage who later signed the Declaration of Independence. The Kingston company of Dewitt and Ten Broeck was owned by influential early Dutch families. Dirck W Ten Broeck (1715 - ?) also played a role in the Revolution. He represented the manor of Livingston in the Provincial Assembly during the Revolution when it met at Kingston in 1777, and again in 1778 in Poughkeepsie. He remained an Assembly representative until 1783. The most extensive accounts in the ledger are those for Philip Livingston (1716- 1878), who at the time was in business with his father, also Philip Livingston (1686 - 1749) trading slaves in the West Indies and Africa through their company Philip Livingston & Sons. The ledger records Philip Livingston's purchase of a slave on February 13, 1740 in Dutch: "Voor 1 neger gelevert (For 1 Negro delivered) 32 pounds" (p80). The ledger entries are recorded in Dutch until 1741; the entries recorded in English begin in 1744. Philip Livingston Sr. spent much time in New York City; he owned several ships used for privateering and the triangle trade. By the 1730s Livingston & Sons were one of New York's leading importers of slave labor from the sugar islands. Wall Street's official slave market existed from 1711 to 1762; slavery wasn't fully abolished in New York state until 1827. The ledger also records Livingston's other purchases, mainly fur pelts are recorded here from 1743 to 1747 in ruled charts headed "Philip Livingston, his account current in peltry with Henry DeWitt". Livingston Jr. became active raising funds and troops to fight the British. In 1759, he was elected to the New York House of Representatives and attended the Stamp Act Congress. When New York established a rebel government in 1775, he became the President of the Provincial Convention, and a delegate to the Continental Congress. There Livingston supported separation from Britain. In 1776 he joined other Continental Congress delegates in signing the Declaration of Independence. New Netherland was founded by the Dutch as a place of religious refuge and a center of free trade. In 1664 New Amsterdam under Peter Stuyvesant was forced to surrender to the English without a struggle, but this didn't mark the end of Dutch influence in the city or in the Hudson Valley. The Dutch kept a linguistic presence, with Dutch words entering the American vernacular, and Dutch place names remaining, such as Brooklyn (Breuckelen), Harlem (Haarlem) and Broadway (Breede Wegh). The street layout of lower Manhattan below Wall Street, as well as Kingston and Albany was made by the Dutch. Kingston was originally named Wiltwyck by the Dutch, and along with Beverwyck (Albany) was an important Dutch settlement on the Hudson. Other Dutch families recorded in the ledger include Gansevoort, Tappan, Beekman, Coursaler, Colden, Delameter, Dubois, Masten, Merkel, Oosterhaut, Pawling, Rensellaer, Rutsen, Steenburgh, Sleght, Schoonmaker, Ten Eyck, Tenbroek, Van Beuren, Van Nostrand, Vandenburgh, Vansteenburgh, and Van Vliet. These customers made purchases of dry goods, beverages, grains and meals, and pottery. Folio, 8 1/4 x 12 1/2". Title page, [3] pp customer index, 114pp. Has the rear paper covered board but lacks front cover and spine binding. Some leaves and gatherings detached but present. A few final leaves marked and worn, otherwise in remarkably good condition, text bright and legible. An important early record of commerce in colonial New York showing the central role of the descendants of the original Dutch settlers in the Hudson Valley right through the middle of the 18th century.
