Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

Catalogue des livres inprimés [sic] aux dépens de l'Académie impériale des sciences de St. Pétersbourg. Et qui se vendent en sa librairie [with] Traite de l'origine demonstration, contruction & usage du Quadrant Analematique

A catalogue of books for sale from the Russian Imperial Academy of Sciences. We have been able to trace only one other copy, at the Academy of Sciences Library in St Petersburg. Around 80 books are listed, published 1725-48 (the Press had struggled with sales initially and a stockpile soon built up). But there is something for every reader, and every pocket: science, history, law, education, topography, heraldry, biography (funeral orations for Peter the Great's military élite sit next to a Russian translation of Fontenelle), with prices ranging from 10 kopeks (a sermon by the Archbishop of Novgorod) to 20 roubles (ten volumes of the Academy's Commentarii scientiarum; two more are in the press, according to the advertisements on the final page). Also available is a selection of Romanov portraits and silhouettes, and a number of maps, both geographical and military. The Imperial Academy of Sciences founded its press in 1727. Within a decade it was to become the most important secular publishing house in Russia. The Press set up a bookshop (one of the earliest in the capital, and the sole outlet for foreign-language publications) in 1728 and initially ran advertisements in, and as supplements to, the newspaper St Peterburgskie vedomosti. These were in Russian, but in the 1730s lists of books for sale also began to appear in German and French. The present example comes from an exciting time for the Press. Plans were afoot to open a second shop, in Moscow (this took place the following March), and to extend bookselling activities into provincial Russia. And even beyond: one wonders when the Catalogue found its way into the Macclesfield Library. There are markings here next to a number of books which the Earl owned - did he order direct from St Petersburg? - by Bayer, Euler, Krafft, and nearly all the maps. All Academy of Sciences bookshop catalogues, in whatever language, are extremely rare. A survey of COPAC, OCLC and KVK finds only one earlier example, a 1739 German catalogue, at the Franckesche Stiftungen in Halle. Provenance: from the Macclesfield library with stamp on initial two leaves. Svodnyi katalog 3197 (listing only 12 pages). On the background, see Gary Marker, Publishing, Printing, and the Origins of Intellectual Life in Russiam 1700-1800 (Princeton UP, 1985), especially chapters 2 and 6. [bound with] Vavlezard, Sieur de. Traite de l'origine demonstration, contruction & usage du Quadrant Analematique. 1644. Paris. Jean Le Brun. 2 ff., 50 pp., 1-8, 1 ff. (numbered 51). [bound with] Cospi, Antonio Maria; F. I. F. N. P. M. (translator and editor). L'Interpretation des Chiffres ou Regle pour bien entendre & expliquer facilment toutes fortes de Chiffres simples. 1641. Paris. Augustin Courbe. 3 ff., 90 pp. [bound with] [Propaganda Fide]. Chaldeae seu Aethiopicae Linguae Institutiones. 1630. Rome. Typis Sac.          ARABIC GRAMMAR & POETRY: GRAMMATICA ARABICA CUM FABULIS LOCMANNI, ETC. ACCEDUNT EXCERPTA ANTHOLOGIAE VETERUM ARABIAE POETARUM QUAE INSCRIBITUR HAMASA ABI TEMMAM. EDITA, CONVERSA ET NOTIS ILLUSTRATA AB A. SCHULTENS.

Leiden: Samuel et Joannes Luchtmans . 1748 - 4°, [14], CLXXII, 603 pp., [14], contemporary vellum binding with gilt embossed coat of arms on the covers and manuscript title on the back (Very Good, paper with light foxing, endpapers with small tears and tiny loss of paper, old bookmark mounted on the inner side of the cover, old manuscript annotations on end papers and in the margin of title page, cover slightly dusty). A 1748 edition of the first accurate book of Arabic grammar by orientalist Thomas van Erpe includes the first Latin translation of the 9th century Arabic anthology the Hamasah by Abu Tammam. - Thomas van Erpe, with a Latin name Thomas Erpenius (1584 – 1624), was a Dutch Orientalist, who founded a printing press with Hebrew, Arabic, Syrian, Ethiopian, and Turkish type in Leiden, South Holland. The first edition of van Erpe’s Arabic grammar was published in 1613. After a great success of the book, further enlarged editions were published, such as Rudimenta linguae Arabicae (1620), Grammatica Ebraea generalis (1621) and after van Erpe’s premature death Grammatica Chaldaica et Syria (1628). Our edition here includes reprinted text on grammar from the 1656 edition, but includes for the first time a Latin translation of a famous anthology of Arabic poetry the Hamasah (Hamasa) by Abu Tammam (788–845). Abu Tammam was born in Syria to Christian parents, but converted to Muslim. His work the Hamasah (Arabic:?? "exhortation") known as one of the greatest anthologies of Arabic literature ever written. The Hamsah text was edited and translated by Albert Schultens (1686 –1750), an orientalist, specialist in Hebre wand Arabic, professor at the Univerity of Leiden and the chief teacher of the Arabic language in the whole of the Europe. Compiled from Papers and Other Materials of the Right Honourable George Lord Anson, and Published under His Direction, by Richard Walter, M. A. Chaplain of His Majesty's Ship the Centurion, in That Expedition.

London: (1748). With Charts of the Southern Part of South America, of Part of the Pacific Ocean, and of the Track of the Centurion round the World. - (3) Large Folding Maps - A complete and sound copy. "This is the official account of Anson's voyage. England, at war with Spain in 1739, equipped eight ships under the command of George Anson to harass the Spaniards on the western coast of South America, for the purpose of cutting off Spanish supplies of wealth from the Pacific area....Lord Anson, who was a friend and patron of Benjamin Robins, after returning from the voyage around the world in the Centurion, appears to have entrusted to Robins, for revision, the account of the voyage which had been compiled from the journals by his chaplain, Richard Walter. It is probable that Robins revised and edited the work, wrote an introduction, and added dissertations....This compilation has long occupied a distinguished position as a masterpiece of descriptive travel. Anson's voyage appears to have been the most popular book of maritime adventure of the eighteenth century" (Hill) . Cox I, p. 49. Hill I, pp. 317-318. National Maritime Museum I, 109.          Introductio in analysin infinitorum.

M.-M. Bousquet, Lausanne 1748 - First edition of Euler?s great textbook on analysis, the only work of Euler listed in Printing and the Mind of Man. ?In his ?Introduction to Analysis? Euler did for modern analysis what Euclid had done for ancient geometry? (PMM). The editors of the first volume of the Introductio in Opera Omnia (Ser. 1, Vol. 8) emphasize that the work ?still today deserves to be not only read, but studied with devotion. No mathematician will put it aside without immense benefit,? and that the Introductio ?marks the beginning of a new epoch and that this work has become influential for the whole development of the mathematical science by virtue of not only its content, but also its language.? The eminent historian of mathematics, Carl Boyer, in his address to the International Congress of Mathematicians in 1950, called it the greatest modern textbook in mathematics. Boyer cited Euclid?s Geometry as the greatest mathematical textbook of the classical period, perhaps of all time, appearing in over one thousand editions. For the medieval period, he chose the less well-known Al-Khowarizmi, largely devoted to algebra. But for ?modern? times, Boyer made the case for Euler?s Introductio as the greatest modern textbook?and, appropriately, this time a text in analysis. Gauss said, ?The study of Euler?s works will remain the best school for the various fields of mathematics, and nothing can replace it.? In 1979 André Weil remarked that he was trying to convince ?the mathematical community that our students of mathematics would profit much more from a study of Euler?s Introductio in analysis infinitorum, rather than of the available modern textbooks? (Alexanderson, p. 635).Provenance: Sauini Zamagna (?) (inscription on title).?Leonhard Euler (1707-83), the great Swiss mathematician, was born at Basel where he became the pupil of Johann Bernoulli, whose sons persuaded Catherine the Great to invite him to St. Petersburg. In 1747 he was invited by Frederick the Great to Berlin. In 1766 he became blind, but this did not interfere with his colossal output of work. Altogether he produced thirty-two books in Latin, German and French, and approximately nine hundred memoirs (making him the most productive mathematician who ever lived). He covered practically the entire field of pure and applied mathematics, but some of his best and most enduring work was done in analysis, which he established as an independent science.?In his ?Introduction to Analysis? Euler did for modern analysis what Euclid had done for ancient geometry. It contains an exposition of algebra, trigonometry and analytical geometry, both plane and solid, a definition of logarithms as exponents, and important contributions to the theory of equations. He evolved the modern exponential treatment of logarithms, including the fact that each number has an infinity of natural logarithms. In the early chapters there appears for the first time the definition of mathematical function, one of the fundamental concepts of modern mathematics. From Euler?s time mathematics and physics tended to be treated algebraically, and many of his principles are still used in teaching mathematics? (PMM).?The topics in the Introductio include: the definition of a function and the distinction between single-valued and many-valued ?functions?, or odd and even functions. There are questions of polynomial factorization related to the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra; substitutions, infinite series, exponentials and logarithms, and expansions into partial fractions; multiple angle formulas; evaluations of ?(2k), for k a positive integer (the famous so-called Basel problem); infinite series-infinite product formulas; and partitions of integers. Much of the latter part of volume 1 is devoted to generating functions and continued fractions. Volume 2 is largely concerned with classification of curves and the study of the conics, and higher degree curves and surfaces. D. J. Struik referred to it as the first textbook in analytic geometr

Lunario de un siglo que comenzava en su Original por Enero del año de 1740 y acaba en Diziembre del año de 1841 en que se comprehenden ciento y un años cumplidos

Imprenta de Francisco da Silva, Lisboa 1748 - "Notable First Edition: Science & Astronomy In Jesuit Missions In Paraguay. Written By an Argentinean Jesuit". 8vo.; full contemporary calf. ONE OF THE MOST DESIRABLE SCIENCE BOOKS RELATED TO SOUTH AMERICA, the extremely rare first edition of this Astronomy book written by an Argentinean Jesuit (1678-1756), who was in charge of building the first observatories in the Jesuit Missions of the Rio de la Plata and Paraguay.
