[MAP - NETHERLANDS]. [LE ROUGE, George-Louis].
Two large complementary wall maps of the seven Dutch provinces, covering (1) the provinces Holland, Utrecht, Friesland, Groningen, Overijssel and Gelderland and a part of Brabant, bound to the line Steenbergen - Roermond, and (2) Zeeland. Both are rare, especially the map of Zeeland. They were the first maps of the Netherlands on such a large scale, mostly about 1:105,000, but with some eastern regions squeezed in at about 1:140,000. Fully assembled, the map of “Hollande” would measure about 230 x 155 cm, and the map of Zeeland about 143 x 175 cm.Originally published in 1748, Le Rouge's 21 plates for the two maps were revised for publication in a second state by Jean Crepy ca. 1770. The map in its present third state was revised and published by Jean A. Dezauche in 1790. On the back of each sheet is an engraved label with the sheet number and the name of the region covered added in manuscript. From the library of Marco-Antonio III (1730-1800), Prince Borghese: on each box is the engraved armorial bookplate of the library of this Borghese Prince. Marc-Antonio's son, Camillo Filippo Ludovico (1775-1832), married Napoleon's sister in 1803.Boxes are slightly scuffed. KALM, Peter.
[2], XII, 414; IV, 423, [8].Second English edition. Kalm's account met with great success and is a classic in North American travel literature. A Swedish botanist, Kalm travelled in America from 1748 to 1751. His primary purpose was to discover plants that could thrive in Sweden, but his observations range much wider. He discusses the American Indians, the value of colonies and numerous other subjects. His work contains a truthful account of the countries visited. Linnaeus, who instigated Kalm's voyage, immortalized the him by naming the America Laurel "Kalmia" in his honour. J.R. Forster, a German naturalist who accompanied Captain Cook, translated Kalm's account into English.Kalm's observations have little scientific value, but they possess a certain freshness that commends them to every lover of the wayside. ... His observations give us a glimpse of historical background -- a bit of real bird life in America more than half a century before the father of American Ornithology began his work” (Trotter). Each volume with the armorial bookplate of William Rashleigh I (1777-1855) or more likely II (1817-1871). In very good condition. The binding has some cracks in the joints and a few surface abrasions and worm holes, but is still good.l Gagnon 1849; Hunt 616 (note); JCB 1828; Sabin 36989; Trinity Coll. [CADIÈRE, Catherine and Jean-Baptiste GIRARD (subject)].
24, [128] pp.Attractive copy of a very rare erotic print series concerning the notorious case of the Jesuit Jean-Baptiste Girard and Catherine Cadière, which inspired the 1748 French novel Thérèse philosophe: an icon of 18th-century libertinism. The series was issued (simultaneously?) in French with letterpress title: Histoire du pere Jean Baptiste Girard ... et de la damoiselle Marie Caterine Cadière, but without the accompanying anti-Catholic verses and prose introduction of the present edition in Dutch. The occasionally very graphic prints show some of the accusations such as flagellation and kissing the "stigma" (ulcer) below her left breast. Most scenes include one or more demons or angels. At age 18 the beautiful young Catherine Cadière joined a group of devotees of the Third Order of St. Theresa, who lived in their own homes, but were dedicated to prayer and meditations. Their spiritual director was the highly respected Jesuit father Jean-Baptiste Girard (1680-1733). Catherine told him that she had saintly visions in which God recommended Girard to guide her. After a year of spiritual guidance he decided her signs of holiness were questionable. Catherine was disappointed by Girard's rejection and retreated to a convent, where she started acting possessed. Exorcism was attempted and she accused father Girard of bewitchment and sexual abuse. The case was then taken to court and soon attracted a lot of attention, which resulted in dozens of publications. The notoriety of course came from the scandal of a priest sexually abusing a young girl, who herself used crude decept … [Click Below for Full Description]

COXE, William (Paul Henri MALLET, transl.), Thomas PENNANT, Joseph BANKS, and others.
1748. [6]; 355, [4], [1 blank]; [2], VI, [2], 422, [6]; [4], 382 pp.Large paper copy of the 4to-edition of a set of travel descriptions of the northern parts of Europe, including the description of Russia, Poland, Denmark, Sweden and Norway by the English historian William Coxe (1748-1828). The three volumes of the Nouveau recueill consist of several travel works on different areas, edited by an anonymous editor. The first volume contains 9 travelogues, including descriptions of Scotland and the Outer Hebrides, Anglesey Island, Saint Kilda, the Scilly Islands and Wale, and a dissertation on the Scottish Highlanders. This volume also contains a description of a voyage to Staffa, by the English naturalist, explorer and botanist Joseph Banks (1743-1820).The second and third volume contain the travelogue by William Coxe which was translated into French by Paul Henri Mallet (1730-1807. Mallet also added a description of Norway. Coxe and Mallet’s travelogues include not only plans of important waterways and cities in each land, but also portraits of leading figures. The beautifully hand-coloured large folding maps of Russia, Poland, Sweden and Denmark by Thomas Kitchin (1718-1784), are especially notable. Altogether the Nouveau receuil provides a large collection of travelogues for parts of Europe that were not covered well in the existing literature.Loosely inserted in vol. 3 are the half-title and the title-page of the first volume of the Voyages from the 8vo edition, published in 6 volumes at the same time as the present 4to edition. London: J. Nourse, 1748. First edition. 8vo. (ii), 77, (1) pp. Original course plain paper wrappers. Trigonemetrical diagrams in the text throughout. Wear with two small losses to the spine, though the covers remain sound, very good overall. Thomas Simpson (1710-1761) was a self taught mathematician or "philomath" as they were often termed at the time. Born and raised in Leicestershire before settling in Warwickshire in his early adult life, he eventually moved to London in the 1730s. Here his mathematical talents brought him greater recognition as he began to contribute to periodicals and publish his own works. Appointed assistant to the chief master of mathematics at the Royal Military Academy in 1743 and elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1745, he continued to write prolifically through the later years of his life and these works often went through multiple editions testifying to his importance to the subject. Avignon: Alexandre Giroud, 1748. Small quarto, 11x17 cm; [4], 74 pages. Removed from bound volume, title page was folded under before trimming; otherwise clean and fresh. This is the first separately published account of the discoveries at Herculaneum. This anonymous description of the initial excavations at Herculaneum has been a bibliographic puzzle almost since its publication. Recent scholarship generally attributes it to Guillaume-Marie D'Arthenay, for nineteen years secretary to the French ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples. The first extensive excavations at Herculaneum began under the patronage of the Bourbon king of Naples, Charles VII, in 1738. He tried to keep the excavations and finds as secret as possible. The few approved visitors were even denied the use of pencil and paper to sketch what they saw. There was considerable conspiracy to bring the discoveries to light, and according to Alden Gordon, the leading scholar on the eighteenth century excavations, "D'Arthenay was at the heart of the foreign conspiracy to steal the secrets of Herculaneum." In a further twist, the edition offered here is ostensibly a pirate edition, published anonymously in Avignon several months before the Paris edition that had D'Arthenay's approval. Prior to this, the only published accounts of the excavations were brief notices or travelers' letters reprinted in "news of the day" type journals or scientific proceedings.OCLC and KvK locate fourteen copies: seven in France, including four at BnF; two in Naples; and one each in Germany, Switzerland, Spain, UK (ULondon), and the US … [Click Below for Full Description]

His main interest was botany, but he also covers zoology, medicine and mineralogy. His A general natural history can be regarded as his main work, because each volume was influential on its own. The history of fossils (vol. 1, labeled 3) is Hills first and nearly only publication on mineralogy. He describes the minerals, often based on microscopic examination, and on that basis divides them into series, classes and orders. The folding table at the end of this volume shows a classification system for fossils. The volume on plants (vol. 2, labeled 1) could be regarded as Hills major publication on botany. With 3 engraved maps, 2 engraved folding plates and 1 engraved folding plan. Contemporary mottled calf, richly gold-tooled spines and binding edges; only volume 11 (bound as 2 volumes) in a different but closely matching binding. ca. 600 pp. per volume Lovely set, in the original French, of Rollin's very popular Histoire ancienne, which, contrary to its full title, primarily describes ancient Greece (the other ancient peoples are only treated in the first two volumes). It's a mixed set from three editions published by the Estienne family in nice closely matching bindings. After the first volume appeared in 1730, the series grew well beyond its initially planned five volumes and became tremendously popular, appearing in numerous editions and translations well into the 19th century. Rollin organised a narrative closely based on a wide variety of ancient sources. While this copying was heavily criticized, Rollin also distinguished himself with his concern for moral issues. "The prominent lens through which Rollin viewed history was that of virtue corrupted by power, and this was the main approach that he tested in his Greek history. In the process, moreover, he carved and unprecedented space for Greek antiquity" (Lianeri). The set is in very good co … [Click Below for Full Description]
