de Maillet, Benoit
Honore et Fils, 1748. OVER 100 YEARS BEFORE DARWIN--FIRST EDITION BY A FRENCH DIPLOMAT OF A PHILOSOPHIC TREATISE PROPOSING THAT THE EARTH AND LIFE EVOLVED OVER DEEP TIME. 7 3/4 inches tall hardcover octavo, full calf binding, spine with tooled gilt compartments, red leather gilt title label, edges red-stained, marbled endpapers, two volumes in one: pp. [1-10] i-cxix [2] 1-208 [2] [1-231 [1] [note: pages 113-120 of volume one were not printed), wear to cover edges, binding tight, scattered light foxng, very good. TEXT IN FRENCH. First edition of this important, controversial, and strangely prescient work, dedicated to Cyrano de Bergerac. By using the device of an imaginary voyage to India by a French missionary, and by presenting the work's philosophy as the beliefs of an Indian mystic, Maillet sought to make palatable his pre-Darwinian theories of evolution. Primarily a geological treatise, presented as the theories of an Indian mystic encountered by a French missionary during an imaginary voyage to India, based on Maillet's extensive travels in Europe and the Near East, which attempts to relate man to geology and geology to the universe within the context of Cartesian logic. His theories are said to have influenced Diderot and Darwin. Cioranescu 41376. Sabin 43891. BENOIT DE MAILLET (1656-1738) was a diplomat and explorer. His fame rests almost exclusively on this work, which Ward and Carozzi described as introducing 'the concept of slow changes over a great period of time and that of a diminishing ocean as well as the evolution of marine life into terrestrial life. Deluxe Limited Edition Holy Bible with Illustrations from the Vatican Library Author: Illustrations by Description from Regal Books: For the first time ever in a modern leather bound bible (at time of publishing), the most renowned and exquisite biblical art from the archives of the Vatican in a bible of unparalleled beauty. This edition is based on the extraordinary Renaissance 1748 Urbino bible with all 90 of original paintings commissioned by the Duke of Urbino over 500 years ago, and complimented by other specifically selected works from other Renaissance bibles and prayer books made available by the Vatican Library. The ornate borders, column dividers, scrollwork, and illuminated initial letters are all jewels of the renaissance art. I have included a few mash ups of the intricate miniatures, beautiful embellishments, as well as partial or full page illustrations. To reproduce the jewel-like hues of the original art in their full glory, a special six-color printing process was used in creating this master work. Further, to authentically recreate the luster of pure gold that illuminated Renaissance artistry, a special metallic gold ink was formulated exclusively for this edition. Touches are applied in hand-silhouetted detail to imbue this work with golden radiance throughout. This is extremely unusual for Easton Press editions and I have not seen another title with such painstaking effort from that publisher. The illustrations … [Click Below for Full Description]

MONTESQUIEU, Charles Louis de Secondat].
Geneva, Barrillot [sic], [1748]. 2 vols in one, 4to, pp. [8], xxiv, 522; [4], xvi, 564; an excellent copy in contemporary Dutch vellum, blindstamped cartouche and panels to boards, spine with raised bands and morocco label gilt, somewhat dusty, edges sprinkled red; contemporary annotations to front pastedown and free endpaper.First edition, first issue. Montesquieu's masterpiece of political theory, the principles of which formed the ideological basis of the French and American revolutions and were the cornerstone of the United States Constitution. Montesquieu argues that culture cannot be abstracted from the climate and geography of individual states, meaning there is no single best institution or set of laws; the best institutions are those adapted to the people that they serve and the best laws to the people that they govern. He also makes a case for the division of government and for the need for systems of checks and balances so as to ensure the rights of the individual. De l'esprit des loix foreshadows the work of the philosophes, despite the fact that in general they ignored him. This was probably due to the hostility of Voltaire, though even that great intellect was finally forced to praise Montesquieu's book in public. 1748. Manuscript in ink, secretarial hand but signed by Manso. 8pp including 2 blanks (one docketed). Dated 30th March, One of the most devastating events in Peru's history, but from which the author of this letter emerged with great credit, after rebuilding Callao and Lima and earning himself the title Condé de Superundo (Count of the flood). The earthquake is estimated to have been 8.6 on the Richter scale and the subsequent tsunami twenty-eight metres. Due to the build up of shockwaves, most inhabitants survived the earthquake itself, but the devastation caused the destruction of over three quarters of the buildings. The huge tsunami which arrived twenty minutes after the major tremor killed many. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

RUSSEL, James -
London: Printed for W. Russel, at Horace's Head without Temple-Bar. MDCCXLVIII. 1748. FIRST EDITION. 8vo, viii, 283, [5] 'Index'; five engraved plates including four hand-coloured; contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked to style with red morocco label; armorial bookplate of Sir John Ingilby, Bart. The artist and antiquary James Russel lived in Rome from 1740 and at one time was amongst the foremost ciceroni in Italy with patrons including Richard Mead and Edward Holdsworth. 'The son of a clergyman who taught at Westminster School, London, he travelled to Italy, arriving in Rome in January 1740. There he entered the studio of Francesco Imperiali. Russel's only extant painting is a competent conversation piece, William Drake, Dr Townson and Edward Holdsworth (1744). Although he made copies of Old Masters for British tourists in Rome, his only other recorded original work was a portrait of Cardinal York (1749; untraced) - an indication of his Jacobite sympathies, since the Cardinal was Henry Benedict, brother of Charles Edward Stuart, the exiled Young Pretender to the British throne. 'Russel's Letters from a Young Painter Abroad to his Friends in England, published anonymously in 1748, helped expand his career from painter to cicerone and agent for British visitors in Rome. In 1751 he was commissioning works from Richard Wilson, Thomas Patch and William Chambers for Ralph Howard, later Viscount Wicklow (1724-86). In 1753 he was negotiating commissions for Anthony Langley Swymmer (?1724-60) from Anton Raphael Mengs, and five years later he was protecting the interests of Giovann … [Click Below for Full Description]

ULLOA, Antonio de & JUAN, Jorge
(Madird, 1748). Plano calcográfico. (398 x 510)mm. Is. Palom. sulp. Reg. Mti incidit.
Leiden: De'Imp. d'Elie Luzac, 1748. Presumed second edition. [20], 109; [8], 140pp. 12mo. Contemporary calf, stamped in gilt, red morocco spine label, front joint starting, rear joint rubbed, boards lightly rubbed, head of spine chipped, foot of spine slightly torn; edges stained red; marbled endpapers; text lightly spotted. Cholmondeley Library book-plate on front paste-down. Presumed second edition. [20], 109; [8], 140pp. 12mo. One of the most provocative texts of 18th-century materialism. Julien Offray de La Mettrie's (1709-1751) controversial major work. In it, he denies the existence of a soul, and extends Descartes' argument of animals as automatons, akin to complex machines, to include human beings. This deterministic account proved so scandalous due to its anti-religious worldview, that La Mettrie fled to Berlin and later to the court of Frederick the Great of Prussia, where he worked as a physician and court reader. Bound with: (La Mettrie, Julien Offray de) L'Homme plus que machine Londres, 1748. Presumed first edition. (8), 140 pp. Author sometime given as Elie Luzac and location as Holland. see PMM 215; ESTC 006065851 (8 copies)

DIDEROT, Denis (1713-1784).
Au Monomotapa. [Paris: 1748. First Edition. Two volumes, 12mo (162 x 90 mm), engraved frontispiece bound facing the text and pp. [viii], 370; [iv], 420, five further engraved plates in volume one and two further in volume two, engraved vignettes on the titles, text fairly browned and damp-stained in places, title-page vignettes of canopy with cherub facing to the left (76 x 59), frontispiece with the figures to the left and the trees to the right, bearing the legend 'Imagination prenoit la plume des mains de la folie, et l'amour lui dictoit', The first edition of Diderot's first novel, in a modern green vellum binding. Diderot's early best-seller was said to have been written to pay for the expensive lifestyle of his mistress, Madame de Puisieux. Based on the medieval tale 'Le chevalier que faisait les cons parler' and heavily influenced by Caylus' adaptation of this and Crebillon fils' contes libertins, Diderot soon came to disavow his earliest and raciest work. It caused an enormous scandal on its publication and, along with his Lettres sur les aveugles, was the cause of Diderot's being imprisoned in Vincennes. This is Diderot's nearest approach to the world of Thérèse Philosophe (on the publication of Bijoux Indiscrets this was frequently attributed to him), 'the bawdy, naughty, cheeky world of the early Enlightenment, where everything was held up to question and nothing was sacred' (Darnton p. 90). Even in this, his most scandalous and light-hearted work, Diderot was beginning to express the philosophical ideas that came to fruition in his later work. 'La critique du ca … [Click Below for Full Description]
