Navigantium atque Itinerantium Bibliotheca. Or, a Complete Collection of Voyages and Travels.

London: T. Woodward, A. Ward, S. Birt,. 1744-1748. - 2 volumes. Folio (16 x 10 2/8 inches). Title-pages printed in red and black, privilege leaf facing title-page in volume one. 15 exceptionally fine engraved folding maps, 7 full-page engraved maps, and 39 engraved plates of portraits, town views, cultural scenes and natural history. Contemporary tan calf elaborately decorated in gilt (rebacked in the 19th-century preserving the original spines, endpapers renewed in the 19th-century). THE FIRST SEPARATE MAP OF AUSTRALIA IN ENGLISH A bright and attractive copy of the second and best edition, "revised, with large additions, and continued down to the present time; including particular accounts of the manufactures and commerce of each country", first published in 1705. Some of the recent additions include accounts of the voyages of Christopher Middleton, Woodes Rogers (including the rescue of Selkirk), Jacob Roggeveen, and George Shelvocke, and probably the first printed account of Bering's second expedition. One section of volume two is devoted to attempts to find the Northwest Passage. Most significantly this edition includes important cartographical additions by Emanuel Bowen (died 1767), who worked with Thomas Kitchin: two world maps in volume one, show all of northwest North America and the entire area below the Antarctic Circle as "Parts Undiscovered"; Abel Tasman's discoveries are depicted on the folding map of "New Holland" "A Complete Map of the Southern Continent Surveyed by Capt. Abel Tasman & Depicted by Order of the East India Company in Holland in the Stadt House at Amsterdam", and as such is the first separate depiction of Australia in English. Maps which portray discoveries in the Americas include: "A New & Correct Chart of All the Known World", showing a portion of the northwest coastline of Australia and one small section of New Zealand, in this map the Colorado River is named "North R"; "A New and Accurate Map of the World Drawn from the Best Authorities.Describing the Course of Each of the Following Circum-navigators.Magellan, Drake, and Anson", on which the Colorado River is correctly named; "A New and Accurate Map of America. Exhibiting the Course of the Trade Winds Both in the Atlantic & Pacific Oceans", on which California is correctly shown as a peninsula and the American northwest is devoid of detail and designated "Parts Undiscovered"; "A New & Accurate Chart of the Western or Atlantic Ocean."; "A New and Accurate Chart of the West Indies, with the Adjacent Coasts of North and South America" on which the routes of Spanish galleons are traced; "A New Map of Georgia with Part of Carolina, Florida and Louisiana", which is a rare, large-format, large-scale map showing the region from Charleston to the Mississippi River, it is among the early maps to focus on Georgia, and was used in a 1981 Supreme Court battle over the location of the boundary between Georgia and South Carolina at the mouth of the Savannah River, it was presented as evidence of Georgia's claim that the boundary lies on the northern bank of the river; "A Correct Draught of the North Pole and of All the Countries Hitherto Discovered, Intercepted Between the Pole and the Parallel of 50 Degrees", showing the routes of significant Arctic expeditions to the east as well as to the west, with tracks of the numerous attempts to find the Northeast and Northwest Passages to the economic riches of Asia, much of Greenland and the western part of the North America remain "undiscovered," and decorative cartouches conveniently obscure the unknown Northwest coast. Hill 775; Sabin 30483; "Mapping our World: Terra Incognita to Australia", National Library of Australia, page 143. Catalogued by Kate Hunter [Attributes: Hard Cover]

A Voyage Round the World in the Years MDCCXL, I, II, III, IV. By George Anson ... Compiled from Papers and other Materials of ... George Lord Anson, and Published under his Direction by Richard Walter.

London: John and Paul Knapton for the author, 1748. 4to (290 x 230mm). Contemporary speckled calf gilt, skilfully rebacked, the spine gilt in compartments retaining original gilt morocco lettering-piece in one, others richly decorated with central acorn tools enclosed by star and circle tools and foliate cornerpieces, boards with borders of triple gilt fillets, board-edges roll-tooled in gilt, retaining marbled endpapers and two flyleaves at front and back; pp. [xxxiii], 417, [3]; 42 engraved folding (apart from one) views, maps, plans, and charts (including one plate depicting sea lions); covers with a few restorations, minor offsetting from plates, a few inobtrusive spots; provenance: initial blank inscribed by Isaac Dobrée of Guernsey; his armorial engraved bookplate on front paste-down. First Edition, subscriber's and large paper copy. Anson was sent to plunder Spanish trading territories on the Pacific coast of South America during the War of Jenkins' Ear, but his expedition threatened to turn into a fiasco. His small squadron was battered by storms and too few of his crew survived the journey round Cape Horn to man even the largest ship properly. Anson limped across the Pacific to Macao, where he was able to have the Centurion repaired and find more crew. Finally in June 1743 he achieved a single but substantial victory, capturing the Nuestra Señora de Covadonga, carrying 1,313,843 pieces of eight and 35,682 ounces of virgin silver, and returned to England in June 1744 a rich man. "Anson's voyage is remembered as a classic tale of endurance and leadership in the face of fearful disasters, but to the British public of 1744 it was the treasure of the galleon, triumphantly paraded through the streets of London, which did something to restore national self-esteem battered by an unsuccessful war" (ODNB). The book became a classic of travel literature, being reprinted in smaller format twice in 1748 and about 50 times before the 19th century. - A good story with a happy ending for the hero (not for the Spanish) sells well. Among the subscribers are two members of the Dobrée family of Guernsey, Peter and Isaac, the initial owner of the book who died in 1763. The family had arrived from Normandy after the prosecution of the Huguenots in the mid-16th century and for the subsequent two centuries belonged to the island elite; members of the family were successful merchants, clergymen and politicians.         Early Royal Navy Document; Appointment of Cornelius Sheene as the Master-Cook to HMS "New Dunkirk," Granting Him a Post on a Notable Ship-of-the-Line.

Woolwich, England, 5 December 1748, 1748. Royal Navy appointment of Cornelius Sheene as the Master-Cook to HMS "New Dunkirk," granting him a post on a notable ship-of-the-line that was yet to be built, as well as a servant to assist him, bearing the signatures of four members of the original 'Office of the Admiralty and Marine Affairs' which had been established in 1705. Original printed document, 1 page, completed in manuscript. Single leaf laid paper, watermarked with the Shield of the Royal coat of arms of the United Kingdom including the Anglo-Saxon maxim "Honi soit qui mal y pense on the garter which surrounds the shield." Leaf measures approximately 19 x 30 cm. Very slight age-toning and creasing, otherwise in very good condition, beautifully preserved, a most uncommon naval document. What is most fascinating and unusual about this document, is that the Admiralty did not often appoint cooks. Formal appointments were generally reserved for Commanders, Captains, certainly for a Commander-in-Chief of a foreign station, and for other high-ranking posts. Cornelius Sheene must have been exceptionally skilled at his trade, preparing meals at sea and providing sustenance to large crews, also contending with the unique challenges of foreign goods, unforeseeable shortages, and unique diseases of a Pacific voyage. Not only was he granted an official appointment, he was to be provided with a servant to assist him. In addition, he was being assured employment on a ship that was not yet built. The document is signed in the original by Royal Navy Captain Richard Haddock (1673-1751) who was Comptroller of the Navy from 1734-1749; Robert Osborn, Esq., Commissioner of the Navy holding the post of Clerk of the Acts from 1746-1747, possibly retaining the same post the following year when he signed the above; and two others. Apart from the two appointments revealed in the present document, and the appointment revealed in the document of the British Archives, little else is known about him.. Manuscript.

De l'Esprit de Loix.       Geneve, Barrillot (sic!) & Fils, [1748]. 4to. Two lovely contemporary uniform full calf bindings with richly gilt spines, gilt title- and tome-labels and single gilt line-borders to boards. Edges of boards blindtooled. Very neatly restored at hinges and corners, barely noticeable. 19th century book-plate ("FAMA") to inside if front boards. Old handwritten notes in ink to front free end-papers. Some leaves evenly browned, as usual. Vol. I with contemporary owner's inscription "B. Heiman/ 1756/ S. st." to verso of title-page. Light inkspotting to half-title and occasional light brownspotting. Vol. II with very small owner's name to verso of front free end-paper: "Mr. Gustavo Horta" and with a worm tract. The worm tract is mostly very small and only in the very top corner of the upper blank margin or as a tiny hole in the inner blank margin towards the hinge. From pp. 493 to 544, the worm tract is larger, but still situated in the blank margin (outer) and far from affecting text at any point. With both half-titles, preface (vol. 1), and tables of contents. No errata at the end of volume one, and no folded map. Woodcut printer's devices to title-pages. (8), XXIV, 522; (4), XVI, 564 pp. ¶ The very rare first edition, first issue of Montesquieu's seminal main work, "[i]n many ways one of the most remarkable works of the eighteenth century" (PMM 197), in which the author presents his theory of constitutional monarchy, advocating constitutionalism and the separation of powers, and explains human laws and social institutions. The very first printing, i.e. the first edition, first issue, of the present work is of the utmost scarcity. Numerous editions and issues of the work were printed in the months following the first appearance. The present copy has the first issue pointers (the two "r"s in "Barrillot" on the title-page, no errata). It does not have a folding map, as mentioned by Brunet, but whether this is actually supposed to be present or not in the first printing, has not been established - some bibliographers say that it should not be there.Montesquieu began writing this his magnum opus in 1743, by the end of which year he had almost finished the first draft of it. The same year he began the first of two great revisions of it, which he finished in 1746. In 1747 he finished his second revision, adding several new chapters, and chose J. Barrillot from Geneva to publish the work, which finally appeared for the first time in November 1748, in two quarto volumes, with no mention of author or year. Numerous editions and issues appeared the following months and years, and by 1751 22 editions of the work had appeared. Already in 1750 the work was published in English, the English editions amounting to 10 by 1773, and by 1801 the work had appeared in both German (1789), Dutch, Danish, Polish, Italian, and Russian (1801). The work exercised the greatest of influence, both negative and positive, and numerous anti-Montesquieu-pamphlets and articles appeared during the last half of the 18th century. Because of the work, Montesquieu was also attacked by the Sorbonne, as well as in the general assembly of the French clergy, and in Rome. In 1751 the work was placed on the Index. As the number of editions, translations etc. bears witness to, the work provided the greatest of impact on 18th century political thought as well as actual politics and law. In fact, few other works can be claimed to possess the same power of influence as this one, directly affecting the likes of Tocqueville and Catherine the Great. Although Montesquieu had to defend himself against great thinkers like Voltaire, "his theories underlay the thinking which led up to the American and French revolutions, and the United States Constitution in particular is a lasting tribute to the principles he advocated." (PMM 197). "Montesquieu was one of the great political philosophers of the Enlightenment. Insatiably curious and mordantly funny, he constructed a naturalistic account of the various forms of government, and of the causes that made them what they were and that advanced or constrained their development. He used this account to explain how governments might be preserved from corruption. He saw despotism, in particular, as a standing danger for any government not already despotic, and argued that it could best be prevented by a system in which different bodies exercised legislative, executive, and judicial power, and in which all those bodies were bound by the rule of law. This theory of the separation of powers had an enormous impact on liberal political theory, and on the framers of the constitution of the United States of America." (SEP).Kress: 4920; Tchemerzine: VIII, 459; PMM 197.

Tabularum, et Edicti perpetui.. - Tomus Tertio.. à libro trigesimo-nono ad quinquagesimum..”. "Prima edizione" a cura di R.J. Pothier.

Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

Catalogue des livres inprimés [sic] aux dépens de l'Académie impériale des sciences de St. Pétersbourg. Et qui se vendent en sa librairie [with] Traite de l'origine demonstration, contruction & usage du Quadrant Analematique

A catalogue of books for sale from the Russian Imperial Academy of Sciences. We have been able to trace only one other copy, at the Academy of Sciences Library in St Petersburg. Around 80 books are listed, published 1725-48 (the Press had struggled with sales initially and a stockpile soon built up). But there is something for every reader, and every pocket: science, history, law, education, topography, heraldry, biography (funeral orations for Peter the Great's military élite sit next to a Russian translation of Fontenelle), with prices ranging from 10 kopeks (a sermon by the Archbishop of Novgorod) to 20 roubles (ten volumes of the Academy's Commentarii scientiarum; two more are in the press, according to the advertisements on the final page). Also available is a selection of Romanov portraits and silhouettes, and a number of maps, both geographical and military. The Imperial Academy of Sciences founded its press in 1727. Within a decade it was to become the most important secular publishing house in Russia. The Press set up a bookshop (one of the earliest in the capital, and the sole outlet for foreign-language publications) in 1728 and initially ran advertisements in, and as supplements to, the newspaper St Peterburgskie vedomosti. These were in Russian, but in the 1730s lists of books for sale also began to appear in German and French. The present example comes from an exciting time for the Press. Plans were afoot to open a second shop, in Moscow (this took place the following March), and to extend bookselling activities into provincial Russia. And even beyond: one wonders when the Catalogue found its way into the Macclesfield Library. There are markings here next to a number of books which the Earl owned - did he order direct from St Petersburg? - by Bayer, Euler, Krafft, and nearly all the maps. All Academy of Sciences bookshop catalogues, in whatever language, are extremely rare. A survey of COPAC, OCLC and KVK finds only one earlier example, a 1739 German catalogue, at the Franckesche Stiftungen in Halle. Provenance: from the Macclesfield library with stamp on initial two leaves. Svodnyi katalog 3197 (listing only 12 pages). On the background, see Gary Marker, Publishing, Printing, and the Origins of Intellectual Life in Russiam 1700-1800 (Princeton UP, 1985), especially chapters 2 and 6. [bound with] Vavlezard, Sieur de. Traite de l'origine demonstration, contruction & usage du Quadrant Analematique. 1644. Paris. Jean Le Brun. 2 ff., 50 pp., 1-8, 1 ff. (numbered 51).         ARABIC GRAMMAR & POETRY: GRAMMATICA ARABICA CUM FABULIS LOCMANNI, ETC. ACCEDUNT EXCERPTA ANTHOLOGIAE VETERUM ARABIAE POETARUM QUAE INSCRIBITUR HAMASA ABI TEMMAM. EDITA, CONVERSA ET NOTIS ILLUSTRATA AB A. SCHULTENS.

Leiden: Samuel et Joannes Luchtmans . 1748 - 4°, [14], CLXXII, 603 pp., [14], contemporary vellum binding with gilt embossed coat of arms on the covers and manuscript title on the back (Very Good, paper with light foxing, endpapers with small tears and tiny loss of paper, old bookmark mounted on the inner side of the cover, old manuscript annotations on end papers and in the margin of title page, cover slightly dusty). A 1748 edition of the first accurate book of Arabic grammar by orientalist Thomas van Erpe includes the first Latin translation of the 9th century Arabic anthology the Hamasah by Abu Tammam. - Thomas van Erpe, with a Latin name Thomas Erpenius (1584 – 1624), was a Dutch Orientalist, who founded a printing press with Hebrew, Arabic, Syrian, Ethiopian, and Turkish type in Leiden, South Holland. The first edition of van Erpe’s Arabic grammar was published in 1613. After a great success of the book, further enlarged editions were published, such as Rudimenta linguae Arabicae (1620), Grammatica Ebraea generalis (1621) and after van Erpe’s premature death Grammatica Chaldaica et Syria (1628). Our edition here includes reprinted text on grammar from the 1656 edition, but includes for the first time a Latin translation of a famous anthology of Arabic poetry the Hamasah (Hamasa) by Abu Tammam (788–845). Abu Tammam was born in Syria to Christian parents, but converted to Muslim. His work the Hamasah (Arabic:?? "exhortation") known as one of the greatest anthologies of Arabic literature ever written. The Hamsah text was edited and translated by Albert Schultens (1686 –1750), an orientalist, specialist in Hebre wand Arabic, professor at the Univerity of Leiden and the chief teacher of the Arabic language in the whole of the Europe.
