Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

         A TREATISE CONCERNING RELIGIOUS AFFECTIONS

Boston: Printed for S. Kneeland and T. Green, 1746. FIRST EDITION. This pro-revivalist treatise by prominent Congregational minister Jonathan Edwards was a defense of the role of emotion in religious conversion and a rebuttal of Charles Chauncy's denunciation of religious fervor he saw as histrionic. Based on his own religious experience, Edwards (1703-58) believed the heart was at least as important as the head in finding one's way to God, and he responds here to Chauncy's contempt for over-inflamed religious "passion." According to ANB, "Treatise" makes the point that "affections were different from passion, which overpowered the rational exercises of the mind." Like Chauncy, Edwards was disturbed by the fainting spells and other excessive demonstrations of conversion that took place at revivals, but he still saw conversion as a very emotional experience. Copies of this work are not especially rare, but our volume has fared far better than most over the years.. 198 x 136 mm. (7 3/4 x 5 3/8"). 1 p.l. (title), vi, 343, [9] pp. FIRST EDITION. Contemporary sheep, flat spine, absence of pastedowns displaying the stitching and the boards printed with legal rulings from ca. 1755 (restorations to joints and corners).Inside front board with a couple of later ownership notations; rear flyleaf with ink notations of the births of Elisebeth (1764) and Nathan (1761) Haskell. Evans 5767. Leather a little crackled, half a dozen small abrasions to boards, but the binding entirely sound. Title page a little soiled, final leaf with fore-edge margin replaced, penultimate leaf with horizontal tear across text neatly repaired with minimal effect on legibility, minor foxing to margins throughout, more pronounced on three gatherings, isolated small stains, but a very good copy, the text generally clean and fresh, with nothing approaching a major defect. This pro-revivalist treatise by prominent Congregational minister Jonathan Edwards was a defense of the role of emotion in religious conversion and a rebuttal of Charles Chauncy's denunciation of religious fervor he saw as histrionic.

Paris. 1707". Coumont [p.113, C7.1], Dorbon [610], Caillet [I, 1964], ___________________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________ENGLISH_DESCRIPTION______________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________ Contemporary full mottled sheep, spine in six compartments, title in gilt on lettering-piece, red edges. 12mo (165 x 94 mm), xxxvi-500-(4 : catalogue) pages Corners ans caps chipped . First edition of this curious treatise on vampires and demons. In the first part, Calmet wrote about demons, ghosts, lemurs, apparitions, incubi and succubi, witches, Sabbath . But this is the second part dealing with vampires that made controversial. Indeed the observed phenomena of vampirism in Eastern Europe were not known in France. Convinced by the number of concordant testimonies, Calmet defined the vampire as a dead man emerged from his grave to suck the blood of the living. He then advocated as a remedy, to take the body of the vampire, to separate his head from his body and drive a stake through the chest or to burn the body. At the end, with a separate title page and continuous pagination is the "Dissertation sur ce qu'on doit penser de l'aaparition des esprits, à l'occasion de l'avanture arrivée à St-Maur. Paris. 1707".

N.p., n.pr., 1746?. - 4°, disbound. Caption title and four-line criblé initial on p. 1. In good to very good condition. 12 pp. *** First Edition in Portuguese, signed in print at the end 15 December 1746. The anonymous author describes the oppression inflicted by the Austrians after they captured Genoa in September 1746, including sacking the city and imposing fines so heavy that the city had to hand over money from the Bank of St. George, the city's leading financial institution. Trade was slowing to a trickle and travel was forbidden. The Austrian governor, Antoniotto Botta d'Adorno, was particularly harsh, probably because his family had been expelled from Genoa some years earlier. On 5 December 1746, Austrian soldiers moving a mortar down the street saw it sink into a huge hole, and when their leader tried to beat the Genoese bystanders into helping drag it out, the Genoese pelted the soldiers with rocks. In short order the Genoese commandeered weapons from the armory and fought a series of other skirmishes, driving the Austrians out of the city by 10 December (pp. 6-10). By the author's estimate, only 50 Genoese were killed or wounded; for the Austrians, he says, casualties topped 4,000. In 1745, Genoa had reluctantly entered the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748) on the side of France and Spain. The next year the city was besieged by Austrians, British, and Genoa's mortal enemies, the Sardinians. Abandoned by its allies, Genoa surrendered to the Austrians in September 1746, but December 1746 saw the great popular uprising described here. One of the main goals of the Austrians during the 1747 campaign in Italy was to recapture Genoa, which they failed to do.The War of the Austrian Succession began in 1740, with the death of Emperor Charles VI. It included several small conflicts: the War of Jenkins' Ear (which began in 1739), King George's War in North America (1744-1748), and two Silesian wars, finally ending in 1748 with the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, which mostly returned territories to the status quo ante.*** Coimbra, Miscelâneas 902.
