        La Cause Badine

Paris: chez Gersaint et chez Surugue, [1747]. Engraving, printed on laid paper. Very good condition with the exception of some repair in the bottom right hand corner of sheet. Image size: 13 7/8 x 19 inches. 14 1/2 x 19 5/8 inches. 16 1/2 x 21 1/4 inches. A charming arabesque depicting a group of children playfully engaged in an argument, from Moyreau's "Oeuvres Des Estampes Gravées d'après Les Tableaux & Desseins de feu Antoine Watteau." Born in Valenciennes in 1684, the versatile artist Jean- Antoine Watteau was primarily renowned for his fête galante paintings depicting aristocratic men and women amorously conversing in the outdoors. Following a brief apprenticeship to the local painter Jacques-Albert Gérin, Watteau moved to Paris in 1702 where he later studied with Claude Gillot, scene painter for the comédie italienne, who introduced him to the commedia dell'arte, which later became a recurrent theme in his work. In 1708, he began to work with the decorator Claude Audran, under whose tutelage he produced several innovative ornamental decorations that were for porcelain, furniture, and textiles. Watteau was also a prolific draughtsman and his varied and substantial oeuvre includes military, genre, religious, mythological, and theatrical scenes as well as tapestry cartoons. After Watteau's death in 1721, his friend Jean de Jullienne commissioned a comprehensive body of engravings after the artist's drawings and paintings, which further solidified his reputation as one of the most influential and prominent artists of the Rococo period.         The Farmer's Instructor; or, the Husbandman and Gardener's Useful and Necessary Companion. Being a New Treatise of Husbandry, Gardening, and other curious Matters relating to Country Affairs...

London: J. Hodges 1747.. 8vo, (xvi), 275, (1) pp. Frontispiece showing the "four Wheel Drill Plow with a Seed and a Manure Hopper", some light foxing, modern bookplate. Contemporary sheep, double gilt rules, some wear, rebacked with a green label. Originally published as "A New Treatise of Husbandry..." by Trowell in 1738. Renowned for his skill in growing tulips, this enlarged edition followed his death in 1746. Ellis wrote a number of agricultural works from his farm at Little Gaddesden in Hertfordshire, although may not have followed his own advice, DNB noting that "such a sentence as 'Be yourself the first man up in a morning for sounding at your door your harvest horn to call your men at four o'clock,' contrasts amusingly with the writer's own practice, according to those who went to visit him..." Henrey III 1442.

        The Compleat Florist

London: printed for J. Duke and sold by J. Robinson, 1747. Octavo. (8 7/8 x 5 1/4 inches). Engraved throughout. Hand-coloured emblematic frontispiece by John Carwitham, title with elaborate hand-coloured floral border, 100 hand-coloured numbered plates with integral text. Expertly rebacked to style in 18th-century russia, with contemporary marbled paper- covered boards, spines divided into seven compartments with raised bands, red morocco lettering piece. An excellent copy of the deluxe hand- coloured issue of the first edition, second issue of this beautiful and valuable work. Today, the word florist describes a profession: one who sells flowers, normally cut flowers and normally from retail premises. In the 18th-century the word "florist" had a more general meaning. Samuel Johnson, in 1757, defined a florist as a "cultivater [sic.] of flowers" in both a professional and amateur capacity. This work was aimed at both groups of flower growers, and was intended as an indicator of what was available, fashionable, and the "coming-thing," whilst also providing the necessary growing instructions. The work was first published in two parts in 1740, and re-issued in the present format in 1747. Each plate features a single variety. The first six plates include the names of the nurserymen/florists who grew the individual bloom: Messrs. Kingman, Giles (2), Sampson, Bowen and Fairchild. All of the plates include a note of when the variety flowers, and they all also include integral engraved text that either gives cultivation instructions, or refers back to a previous plate that features another variety of the same plant. The work is not only beautifully engraved and printed, but also offers an important overview of the varieties that were available to gardeners during mid-18th century, an important time in the history of gardening when systematic classification was taking hold. A surprising number of different species are shown, with multiple varieties of a number of species, including: 5 tulips; 5 anemone; 6 lillies; 8 carnations or pinks; 7 roses; 4 irises; and 3 auriculas. A contemporary reference records that the work was available at 5s. uncoloured, or, as here, 15s. coloured. Dunthorne 102; cf.

William Shirley Manuscript Document Signed December 24, 1747 payment request for Louisburg capture in 1745

Boston: Governor William Shirley , 1747. 1st Edition. No binding. Very Good. A LETTER RESULTING IN RE-ESTABLISHING THE FINANCES OF MASSACHUSETTS. Massachusetts Royal Governor William Shirley Sends William Pitt A £500 Payment Request Paying Troops Raised In The Recent Land Expedition Against (France) Canada. December 24, 1747 - Dated, Manuscript Document Signed, "W(illiam) Shirley," as Royal Governor, at "Boston New England," Choice Very Fine. This historic Colonial military related document has some normal light mailing folds and small tone spot at the lower right corner, not affecting any of the text. The signature of William Shirley is quite bold and large, measuring 2.5" long. This well written document has 17 lines, in deep bold brown ink, on single sheet of British Royal watermarked period laid paper, measuring 12.5" x 8" and in very readable, nice quality. This is a Pay requisition, addressed to William Pitt the Elder, "Paymaster General of His Majesty's Land Forces," from the British Governor of Massachusetts, William Shirley. He sought payment for the troops he led during a successful siege of Louisbourg, Nova Scotia, in 1745., "The most important event of his administration was the conquest of Louisburg in 1745 . The expedition was undertaken on his suggestion and its success was largely due to his energy and enthusiasm; in September 1749 £183,650 coin was brought to Boston to cover the outlay of Massachusetts, and largely through Shirley's influence this was used for the redemption of outstanding paper money, thus re-establishing the finances of the province, a subject to which Shirley had given much attention." Quoted form on-line encylopedia , It reads, in part: "When the Parliament of Great Britain shall make provision for paying the Troops rais'd for the late intended expedition against Canada be pleas'd or order payment of this my second of exchange... Five Hundred Pounds Sterling... upon account of the Pay for discharging the non-commission officers and private men of the late Regiment... - (Signed) W Shirley," Also, Signed in receipt of payment by Chauncy Townsend on reverse, dated 7th Nov. 1750, indicating the time lag in such matters. William Shirley has been accused by modern historians of ethnic cleansing for ordering the forcible removal of more than 12,000 Acadians from Nova Scotia in 1755. Overall, a most interesting and impressively written Colonial military financial document directly mentioning funds for the British land attack on the French in Canada. This letter not in Correspondence of William Shirley book by C.H. Lincoln, 1912 New York. WILLIAM SHIRLEY (1694-1771). British Commander-In-Chief, Royal Governor of Massachusetts-Bay, who served from 1741 to 1759.

A BILL IN THE CHANCERY OF NEW-JERSEY, AT THE SUIT OF JOHN EARL OF STAIR, AND OTHERS, PROPRIETORS OF THE EASTERN- DIVISION OF NEW-JERSEY; AGAINST BENJAMIN BOND, AND SOME OTHER PERSONS OF ELIZABETH-TOWN, DISTINGUISHED BY THE NAME OF THE CLINKER LOT RIGHT MEN. WITH THREE LARGE MAPS, DONE FROM COPPER-PLATES

New York: James Parker, 1747.. 124,11,[1],13-24,[1],25-39pp. plus three folding maps. Folio. Late 19th- century polished calf, spine and boards gilt, leather label. Heraldic bookplate on front pastedown, contemporary ownership inscription of Hendrick Remsen on front fly leaf. Occasional minor stains. Bound at the end is the March 7, 1747-48 issue of THE NEW-YORK GAZETTE (No. 268). A very good copy. This highly important work is of interest for a number of reasons: its primary author, James Alexander, achieved great fame as the lawyer of Peter Zenger; it contains some of the first maps engraved in America; it was seen through the press by Benjamin Franklin and his New York partner, James Parker; and it is a vital document in settling the long-standing land disputes of colonial New Jersey. Streeter calls it "one of the most remarkable documents of colonial times." The land disputes dealt with in this document had their origins in overlapping Crown grants made by Charles II, which came to a head in arguments over quitrents and surveys in the 1720s. James Alexander, who had been surveyor-general of New Jersey before becoming a lawyer and winning fame as the successful defender of Zenger, undertook on behalf of the Board of Proprietors of the Eastern Division of New Jersey to assemble the evidence for a Bill in Chancery to settle the matter. He assembled the material published here in the 1740s, arguing the proprietors' case with "great subtlety and complexity," according to Streeter. Alexander consulted Benjamin Franklin concerning publication, and the printing work of the letterpress was executed by James Parker of New York, a partner of Franklin. However, Franklin advised that proper map engraving could not be accomplished in Philadelphia or New York, and work on the three maps was farmed out to James Turner of Boston. The now-famed cartographer, Lewis Evans, drew the maps, the first showing North America from Cape Hatteras to Boston; the second showing early survey and boundary lines, Indian paths, and major roads; and the third showing surveys and purchases in East New Jersey. The maps were available to purchasers in both colored and uncolored format. Those present here are in the uncolored state. These are some of the earliest maps drawn and engraved in the colonies, and as such are of tremendous importance.         Les Principales Aventures de L'Incomparable Chevalier Errant Don Quichotte de la Manche

Paris: Jacques-François Chereau, (c. 1747). Large folio. (1), (25)ff., plates. A reissue or reimpression published after the artist, Charles-Antoine Coypel, was named "Premier Peintre du Roi" in 1747; this series of twenty-five engravings was first presented as a deluxe portfolio in Paris, in 1724. The engravings were done after a series of paintings illustrating scenes from Don Quixote that Coypel had designed for a popular set of tapestries, which were woven continuously between 1714 and 1794. Coypel supervised the portfolio's production, and, according to the title page, the engravings were done by "les plus habiles artistes en ce genre." These artists included L. Surugue, F. Joullain, C. N. Cochin, and eight other engravers, who sign the plates. Coypel's depictions of scenes from Don Quixote differed significantly from previous illustrations of Cervantes's classic in that they were less focused on humor, and were more courtly and sophisticated, taking into account the eighteenth-century French taste for the Fête Galante and romanticized depictions of aristocrats in baroque rural settings. The scenery of these illustrations is much more lush Versailles than arid La Mancha. In addition, Coypel's illustrations were never intended to accompany a text, but instead were meant to be admired as decorative pieces. Bound in nineteenth-century half dark blue morocco over marbled boards. The spine bears a crimson lettering piece with gilt lettering. Wear to corners and head and foot of spine, front hinge starting, covers rubbed in spots, some faint marginal foxing, else a very good copy.

The English edition is based on the Danish first edition 1752 - 53, but with new engravings and expanded with a large map. According to Schiøtz the translation to English is by the Norwegian priest Andreas Berthelson who lived in London. The folding map "corrected by Martin Hubner" is based on Homann from c. 1712. Some of the prints are supposed to have been based on works by Mathias Blumenthal who lived in Bergen. Leaf pp 219/220 cancelled as usual. The map with a tear, later front- and endpapers. W. B. Ginsberg "Maps and Mapping of Norway 1602 - 1855" Entry 19, Eiler H. Schiøtz "Utlendingers Reiser I Norge" vol. II, no. 816

The Oceana, and other Works of... Collected, Methodiz'd, and Review'd, with an Exact Account of his Life Prefix'd by John Toland. To which is added, an Appendix, containing all the Political Tracts wrote by this Author...

London: Printed for A. Millar, 1747.. Third edition, folio, (ii), xliv, 632, (14 Index), xlv-xlvi pp, with the final leaf of the preliminaries (Contents) bound at the end. Frontispiece, engraved portrait and one further plate (showing the Venetian Ballot), some very occasional light browning and foxing, armorial bookplates of W.H. Thompson and Henry Babington Smith, the latter being a senior civil servant who among other posts was private secretary to Lord Elgin and President of the National Bank of Turkey. Contemporary calf with some wear, rebacked in a lighter calf. A famous political work first published in 1656 during the Interregnum, which was described by David Hume as the "only valuable model of a commonwealth". Influenced by a visit to Venice as a young man, "Oceana" is a fictional history of England where a new constitution has been formed, based upon property rights, and legislators are voted in and removed in a complicated rotation system. Pleasing neither side, Cromwell ordered the work seized, and Harrington was later imprisoned by Charles II.

Paris, David l'aine, 1747. 4to. Cont. full calf, raised bands. Rebacked in old style. Inner hinges strenghtened. Corners restored. Engraved title-vignette and 1 large engraved vignette in the text. (8),XXVIII,194,138 pp. and 2 engraved folded plates (all). First 4 and last 6 leaves waterstained in margins. Occational marginal dampstaining.. First edition, issued in the same year in both Paris and Berlin, but only the Paris-edition also has the Latin text, which was translated into French by d'Alembert himself. The work is highly important, as it is the first work at all in which the general use of partial differential equations in mathematical physics appeared. D'Alembert discusses the mathematical theory of vibrations of cords and hereby he was led to partial differential equations which he applied to the "Theory of Winds" and laid the base of a scientific meteorology. He rejected the conception of Edmund Halley that the general circulation of the atmosphere is significantly controlled by the distribution of solar heating, and applies a mathematical theory, based on Newton's law of gravitation, thus explaining the winds by means of the gravitational forces from the sun and moon. - D'Alembert's name survives in the mathematics of today, the "Dalabertian" for wave equation, D'alembert's paradox in hydrodynamics etc
