[i.e. Thoughts on the True Estimation of Vital Forces].

Königsberg, Martin Eberhard Dorn, 1746. 8vo. Nice newer full vellum with gilt spine. Title-page a bit soiled and with neat reapair to blank margins, far from affecting text. A bit of occasional browning and soiling. one plate repared from verso, no loss. Title-page + 16 pp. + pp. (3) - 240 + 2 folded engraved plates. Fully complete.. The exceedingly scarce first edition of Kant's debut, the first work that he ever published, at the mere age of 22. The work constitutes a milestone in the modern discussion of dimensionality.Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) - now considered, along with Plato and Aristotle, the most important philosopher of all time -, entered the university of Königsberg at the age of 16, in 1740. Here he studied mainly mathematics and physics under Martin Knutzen and Johann Teske, until his father's death in 1746. These years proved formative for the young philosophical genious, and his profound interest in the philosophy of science stems from this period. When his father died, however, Kant was forced to break off his studies to help provide for the family, which he did by working as a private tutor for three different families over a period of about nine years. Finally in 1755 he was able to resume his studies at the university, and the same year he received his doctorate of philosophy; in 1770 he was finally given a permanent position, as professor of logic and metaphysics at the University of Königsberg. It is here that he writes the works that have changed the entire trajectory of modern thought - his three seminal critiques, that of pure reason, that of practical reason, and that of judgment. The foundation of Kant's philosophy is laid during his early years of studying, which culminate is this his first publication, "Thoughts on the True Estimation of Living Forces", which constitutes an attempt to determine space dimensionality from a physical law. Kant initially adapted Leibnitz's view and tried to explain the nature of space by means of the forces of monads that cause such substances to interact. Although its basic idea was abandoned during his critic period, Kant's first work nonetheless constitutes amilestone in the modern discussion of dimensionality. "The two main influences on Kant in his philosophical reflections on science were Leibniz and Newton. During his first period of study at the University of Königsberg, from 1740 to 1746, Knutzen taught that version of Leibniz's metaphysics which the German philosopher Christian von Wolff had made popular. He also taught the mathematical physics which Newton had developed. He revealed to the young Kant the various oppositions, puzzles, and contradictions of these two great natural philosophers. The nature of space and time was what interested the young Kant most in these disputes between Leibniz and Newton. He studied the famous exchange of letters between Leibniz and Samuel Clarke, a defender of Newton's philosophy. [...] In his early years Kant pondered the nature of space and time first from the point of view of Leibniz and then of Newton, but eventually he found both positions unsatisfactory." (Ellington, in DSB: VII, pp. 225-26). The nature of space and space dimensionality that Kant attempts to uncover and explain in this his first work comes to found a basis for all his later thought. The role that physics, especially the concepts of space and time, plays for his view of the world and for the development of his philosophical thought is immense, and his earliest thoughts on the subject understream all of his later thought.Warda nr. 1

BY HIS EXCELLENCY WILLIAM SHIRLEY, ESQ; CAPTAIN-GENERAL AND GOVERNOUR IN CHIEF, IN AND OVER HIS MAJESTY'S PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHUSETTS-BAY IN NEW-ENGLAND. A PROCLAMATION. WHEREAS HIS MAJESTY HAS BEEN GRACIOUSLY PLEASED TO ORDER A NUMBER OF TROOPS...[caption title]

Boston: John Draper, [1746].. Broadside, 17 x 12 1/4 inches, with woodcut armorial crest of King George II at head of title. Old folds, with some light browning and a few small holes (just touching a few letters) on the folds. Slight occasional soiling. A very good copy. In a frame, 22 x 16 1/2 inches. An extremely rare broadside calling for three thousand colonial troops from Massachusetts to assist in the British fortification of the garrison at Louisbourg, following the French surrender of the fort in 1745 during King George's War. William Shirley, Captain-General and Governor in Chief of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, issued this proclamation to raise troops on June 2, 1746 on behalf of King George II. "Whereas his Majesty has been graciously pleased to order a number of troops, under the command of the honourable Lieutenant-General St. Clair, to proceed from Great-Britain to Louisbourg, with a sufficient convoy of men of war, and with them a great part of his majesty's troops now in Garrison at Louisbourg, also with such troops as shall be levied for that purpose in his Majesty's colonies in North-America, to attempt the immediate reduction of Canada." The proclamation notes that the governors of the other colonies were also expected to raise troops for this expedition, and details regarding the soldiers' terms of service and compensation are provided. England, supported by its colonial militias, controlled Louisbourg for three years, until it was returned to France by the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle in 1748. An extremely rare broadside concerned with the raising of colonial troops during King George's War. NAIP records only a single copy at the Huntington. This is the ex-Middendorf copy. AN EXPLICATION OF THE FIRST CAUSES OF ACTION IN MATTER; AND OF THE CAUSE OF GRAVITATION

New-York: Printed...and London Reprinted: for J. Brindley, 1746.. 75pp. Bound to 18th-century style in three-quarter speckled calf and original marbled boards, spine gilt, leather label. Lightly tanned. Very good. The first British edition of Cadwallader Colden's important early contribution to American scientific knowledge, first published in New York in 1745. Colden was an important political figure in the colony of New York throughout his long life. He is best known for his history of the Iroquois, but he was also a polymathic naturalist and scientist. Although his anti-Newtonian arguments ultimately proved to be fallacious, this work was nonetheless an important contribution. It was one of the first serious scientific works conceived and written in America, and was widely discussed at the time. Colden's work was published in two editions in London, and also translated into French, demonstrating the interest in Europe in American scientific thought. Sabin asserts that this first English edition was brought out without Colden's knowledge or consent. Benjamin Franklin attributed attacks on the publication to the reluctance of Europeans to learn from "us Americans." Colden, with Franklin, was one of the founders of the American Philosophical Society. HOWES C559, "b." SABIN 14268. DAB IV, pp.286-87.

        Opuscula Varii Argumenti, I-III

Berlin: A. Haude & J.C. Spener, 1746-50-51. First edition. First edition of this collection of tracts which contains the first printing of Euler’s major treatise on the theory of light and colors Nova theoria lucis et colorum. According to Casper Hakfoort the wave-particle duality debate in optics really began with Euler’s publication of this work.

& & “When Leonhard Euler published his treatise ‘Nova theoria lucis et colorum’ (A new theory of light and colours) in 1746, he made a contribution to the medium tradition in physical optics that was without parallel in the eighteenth century. The ‘Nova theoria’ constitutes the most lucid, comprehensive, and systematic medium theory of that century. The significance of Euler’s theory can be gauged partly from the fact that it was so widely discussed. No earlier attempts to provide an alternative to the theories developing within the emission tradition had stimulated pens to the same extent as Euler’s ‘Nova theoria’. It is remarkable that a relatively short treatise published as part of a collection of articles on a range of subjects created such resonances, and all the more so when we compare this reaction with the limited response to Huygens’ Traité - a complete book - and with the way in which Johann II Bernoulli’s prize essay was virtually ignored.” (Hakfoort, Optics in the Age of Euler, p. 72, Cambridge University Press, 1995).

& & The ‘Nova theoria’ is pp. 169-244 of volume 1. There are twelve further tracts by Euler (on astronomy, magnetism, electricity, mathematics, and physics) in the three volumes all of which, except one, are published here for the first time. The Eneström numbers are 86-91; 151-154; 109,173-174.

& & Honeyman 1064; Wheeler Gift 366.& 4to (220 x 178 mm), three volumes bound in one contemporary half calf over marbled boards, upper part of front outer hinge starting, some smudging to the upper part of the first title, pp [ii] [1] 2-300 and 6 plates; [ii] [1] 2-166 and 1 plate; [ii] [1] 2-165 and 5 plates. A very good and relatively clean copy of this book which is usually quite browned.

        OPUSCULA VARII ARGUMENTI

.Berolini [i.e. Berlin]: Sumtibus Ambr. Haude & Jo. Carol. Speneri, 1746 I. Solutio problematis mechanici de motu corporum tubis mobilibus inclusorum./ II. Nova tabulae astronomicae motuum solis ac lunae./ III. Nova theoria lucis et colorum./ IV. De perturbatione motus planetarum a resistentia aetheris orta./ an materiae facultas cogitandi tribui possit? VI. Recherches sur la nature des moindres particules des corps. 300pp., six (6) folding plates situated at the rear, bound in full contemporary mottled calf, raised bands, red morocco label, gilt within one compartment, others lavishly gilt; marbled endpapers, all edges red. Booksellers’ ticket "Mrs. Courcier, Paris". Upper board just a bit bowed with short splits at head and foot of upper joint, text lightly toned with some spots of foxing. Edges rubbed with corners a bit worn. In all, a very good copy of the first volume to be published. Two other volumes were later published in 1750-51. Euler was a Swiss mathematician who was tutored by Johann Bernoulli. He worked at the Petersburg Academy and Berlin Academy of Science. He had a phenomenal memory, and once did a calculation in his head to settle an argument between students whose computations differed in the fiftieth decimal place. Euler lost sight in his right eye in 1735, and in his left eye in 1766. Nevertheless, aided by his phenomenal memory (and having practiced writing on a large slate when his sight was failing him), he continued to publish his results by dictating them. He won the Paris Academy Prize 12 times. Euler systematized mathematics by introducing new mathematical symbols and with major contributions in optics, mechanics, electricity, and magnetism. Euler was the most prolific mathematical writer of all times finding time (even with his 13 children) to publish over 800 papers in his lifetime. In a testament to Euler's proficiency in all branches of mathematics, the great French mathematician and celestial mechanic Pierre Laplace told his students, "Read Euler, read Euler, he is our master in everything". [Eric Weisstein]. First Edition. Quarto.

According to Casper Hakfoort the wave-particle duality debate in optics really began with Euler's publication of this work.

"When Leonhard Euler published his treatise 'Nova theoria lucis et colorum' (A new theory of light and colours) in 1746, he made a contribution to the medium tradition in physical optics that was without parallel in the eighteenth century. The 'Nova theoria' constitutes the most lucid, comprehensive, and systematic medium theory of that century. The significance of Euler's theory can be gauged partly from the fact that it was so widely discussed. No earlier attempts to provide an alternative to the theories developing within the emission tradition had stimulated pens to the same extent as Euler's 'Nova theoria'. It is remarkable that a relatively short treatise published as part of a collection of articles on a range of subjects created such resonances, and all the more so when we compare this reaction with the limited response to Huygens' Traité - a complete book - and with the way in which Johann II Bernoulli's prize essay was virtually ignored." (Hakfoort, Optics in the Age of Euler, p. 72, Cambridge University Press, 1995).

The 'Nova theoria' is pp. 169-244 of volume 1. There are twelve further tracts by Euler (on astronomy, magnetism, electricity, mathematics, and physics) in the three volumes all of which, except one, are published here for the first time. The Eneström numbers are 86-91; 151-154; 109,173-174.

Honeyman 1064; Wheeler Gift 366.. 4to (220 x 178 mm), three volumes bound in one contemporary half calf over marbled boards, upper part of front outer hinge starting, some smudging to the upper part of the first title, pp [ii] [1] 2-300 and 6 plates; [ii] [1] 2-166 and 1 plate; [ii] [1] 2-165 and 5 plates. A Letter to Martin Folkes, Esq; President of the Royal Society, Concerning the Rise and Progress of Astronomy amongst the Antients

London: Jacob Ilive 1746 London: Jacob Ilive, 1746. First edition. 8vo (8-1/2 x 4-1/4 inches). Illustrations. [i-ii], 158, [2] pp. Contemporary marbled boards rebacked with 19th-century ribbed cloth, preserving original red morocco spine label, extremities scuffed and rounded. Houseau-L. 650; Lalande 429 ("C'est le commencement des savantes recherches de l'auteur, qui ont produit son Histoire de l'astronomie en 1769") . George Costard (1710-1782) was educated at Wadham College, Oxford, where he became fellow and tutor. One of the earliest writers on the history of astronomy, his "Letter to Martin Folkes" was the first fruit of the research which eventually led to the publication in 1769 of his magnum opus on the history of astornomy. It was Costard's contention that accurate astronomy was a product of Greek genius, beginning with Thales, and owed little to either Egypt or Babylon. The present work is still worth consulting for the frequent references to and citations from the lesser-known Greek authors, as well as Hebrew and Arabic sources. The present copy has an interesting and varied provenance: in 1746 it was presented by the author ("Donum Auctoris") to Jacob Edgcumbe [sic] of Exeter College - possibly a scion of the Devon/Cornwall family headed by the Earl of Mount-Edgcumbe. In 1778 the book was bought for 2 shillings by the Rev. Philip Wren (1755-1829), of University College, Oxford, and the great grandson of Sir Christopher Wren. By the late 19th century, the books was owned by the marine engineer George Sloggett of Cardiff, Wales
