[Click Below for Full Description]

CICERO, Marcus Tullius
Published by Glasgow, Rob. et And. Foulis, 1747. Glasgow, Rob. et And. Foulis, 1747. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 1747-49, 20 volumes; 12mo. A beautifully bound set in contemporary full dark olive morocco. Spines richly gilt decorated in delicate floral pattern, double red lettering/numbering pieces, gilt fillet borders to the sides, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, slight wear to one head bands and one foot, minor rubbing, but a fine and delicate set. Possibly French? A portable set suitable for a traveller. FIRST FOULIS EDITION, one of the most typographically distinguished and scholarly productions of the press, intended to rival Elzevir's printing of a century earlier. This set is unusual for two reasons: firstly its size. The smaller 12mo pot rather than foolscap duodecimo, and a binding that is almost certainly French, and a finely decorated morocco of the period.

LINNAEUS, CARL (LINNÉ). - [THE FIRST BOTANICAL BIBLIOGRAPHY ARRANGED BY SUBJECT]
Halae Sailcae [i.e. Stockholm]: Apud Io. Gottl. Bierwirth, 1747. 8vo. Contemporary marbled paper binding with handwritten paper label to spine. Occational signs of wear. Overall a very nice copy. [XIV], 124, [8] pp. Second edition of Linnaeus' important "Bibliotheca Botanica" (without the Fundamentorum Botanica, which appeared simultaneously), his highly important, elaborate classification system for his catalogue of books. This significant work constitutes the first botanical bibliography arranged by subject and the work in which the term "methodists" is coined. "The Bibliotheca is a concise history of botany in a dry, enumerative, but very efficient style. Linnaeus describes the development of botanical science by subdividing the authors in various categories and by adding several statements on the main events in human affairs without which the growth of botany as a science cannot be understood. The often enlightening and amusing names for the various categories of botanists show not only a good knowledge of the literature, but also an awareness of the fact that botanical history is human history." (Frans Stafleu). The "Bibliotheca Botanica" is complete in itself. It was contemplated as the first part of a planned Bibliotheca medica (which he never wrote). It first appeared in 1736, and the present second edition constitutes a reprint of the first edition of the text, with the addenda and errata of Linnaeus inserted in their place. The work appeared again in 1751. Soulsby: 251. [Attributes: First Edition]

LA FONT DE SAINT YENNE, Etienne]
1747. 3 p.l., 155 pp. 8vo (171 x 102 mm.), cont. mottled calf (joints a little rubbed and cracked at head & tail, but strong), spine gilt, red morocco lettering-piece on spine. The Hague: J. Neaulme, 1747. First edition of this groundbreaking work on the arts in France, composed by the "father of modern art criticism" (Oxford Art online, by A. McClellan). La Font (1688-1771) was employed at Versailles as Gentilhomme de la Reine to Marie Leczinska, and befriended the painter F. Lemoyne. He anonymously wrote several other well-regarded books on the arts. The present work, in addition to his Sentimens (1754), another Salon review, "fuelled an explosion in Salon criticism, much of it anonymous, in the second half of the 18th century and marked a turning-point not just in the history of art criticism but in the relationship between art and politics as well."-Oxford Art online. "In 1747 his notorious Réflexions.was published, anonymously, as were all his subsequent works. Offered ostensibly as a review of the previous year's Paris Salon exhibition, its scope is considerably wider, seeking to identify the causes of what he perceived as the steady decline in French painting, especially history painting, since the death of Louis XIV in 1715. La Font blamed this decline on the spread of the Rococo style in art and decoration and on the growing consumption of luxury goods, which he claimed had banished serious painting from the fashionable interior during the first half of the 18th century. The Réflexions was novel in a number of respects: it holds the government responsible for uphold … [Click Below for Full Description]
