HUTCHESON, Francis.
Glasgow, Robert Foulis 1747. 8vo, pp. [2], iv, [6], 347, [1]; title a little soiled, but a very good copy in contemporary calf, upper hinge cracked but holding, top of spine chipped, corners rubbed; contemporary ownership in ink on the front free endpaper of B. Drayton.First edition in English (first published in Latin in 1745) of a major work of the Scottish Enlightenment by the man who has been called the 'father' of that movement. The Short introduction was to be of the utmost importance in the intellectual development of Adam Smith, perhaps the keenest pupil of 'the never-to-be-forgotten Hutcheson' (Smith's own words).'Hutcheson was a close follower of the third Lord Shaftesbury, and had a great influence upon the Scottish philosophers of the "common-sense" school. His first essays were directed against the selfish and cynical theories of Hobbes and Mandeville. He adopted and developed the "moral sense" doctrine as given by Shaftesbury in contrast to the egoistic utilitarianism of his time.he was apparently the first writer to use Bentham's phrase, "the greatest happiness of the greatest number".[and] He may be thus classed as one of the first exponents of a decided utilitarianism as distinguished from "egoistic hedonism"' (ODNB)His teaching in this may be regarded as the foundation in the corresponding utilitarian theory of economics, whose supporters included Smith, Bentham, James Mill and to a modified degree John Stuart Mill.'Hutcheson was a practical moralist in the Ciceronian tradition, a teacher of virtue who sought to persuade his students at Glasgow University … [Click Below for Full Description]

1747. Condition: Good. Beautiful little pocket atlas with 39 maps, including a map, a map of the sky and 37 maps, a map of Africa, a map of Asia, a map of Europe, a map of America, then a map All watercolored by hand at the time. Unfortunately, this tiny atlas is missing its title page and engraved frontispiece. The fact remains that the set is complete maps indicated in the index (well present at the end of book). Some later copies contained other maps of Germany. The absence of these cards suggests that it would be a print close to the first edition (1747); very pretty little binder decorated with floral motifs surrounding a bird under a canopy. Tired back, missing headdresses, used corners, very fresh interior.

Anthony De GROOT (1697?-1755)
Historical-geographic map showing the places occupied by the Austrian Imperial Army on April 16, 1747, during the siege of Genoa.

STITH, WILLIAM
Williamsburg: William Parks, 1747. First edition, first issue. The later issues may have been printed as late as 1753. This is a lovely copy of Stith s classic history of Virginia from its establishment in 1607 through the dissolution of the Virginia Company of London in 1624, written by the third president of the College of William & Mary. Stith s History of Virginia was one of the first histories of America to be written and published in the British colonies and the first to be printed in Virginia. Stith was well-connected and had access to major colonial libraries such as that of William Byrd as well as to figures who participated in the events he described. William Parks, who established his press in Williamsburg in 1730, was the second printer in Virginia. Parks was the most important colonial printer after Benjamin Franklin (ANB). Stith s History covered the period up to 1624. According to the preface, he intended to carry it further, but no more was published. Its value is based chiefly on the manuscript sources at his command. He says that these included copies of documents collected by his uncle, Sir John Randolph, in preparation for writing an historical Preface to the Laws of Virginia, and a transcript of the records of the Virginia Company lent by Colonel William Byrd, also copies of records of the Virginia courts. His printed sources were mainly the writings of Captain John Smith, Hariot, and Purchas (Sabin). The early charters contained in the Appendix give this work its chief value at the present day this book has become a high authority to later writers (Chu … [Click Below for Full Description]

Mrs Glasse; [Hannah Glasse]
ont> Orlando Hodgson: London, 1747. Ont> Orlando Hodgson: London Book. Very Good. Hardcover. A very scarce edition of Orlando Hodgson's publication of Hannah Glasse's important cookery book, 'The Art of Cookery'. Vanishingly scarce in the original wraps. A very scarce copy of this work, with only one on Copac, held at the British Library. Many editions were copied without explicit author's consent, and it is possible that, as this edition is scarce, this was an unauthorised edition. The signatures for this work run as A6 [B6-F6] G6. Bound without the folding frontispiece that is called for from the copy on Copac held at the British Library. Collated, bound without the folding frontispiece, however all pages are present. 'The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Easy' is a prominent cookery book that became a bestseller for a century after its publication in 1747. It dominated the English speaking market, and gave the author, Hannah Glasse, much fame. The popularity of the work was international, with the likes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin even owning copies, with its popularity surviving the American War of Independence. In this work, Glasse explains that she used simpler language so that the servants who used the book would be able to understand it. The work includes one of the first recipe in English for an Indian style curry, and was also the first book to mention a recipe for trifle using jelly as an ingredient, as well as being the first to use the term 'Yorkshire pudding' in print. Glasse also makes use of many imported ingredients, such as c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Questo raro lavoro fa parte del più splendido atlante anatomico del 18° secolo, il ""The Tables of the Skeleton and Muscles of the Human Body"" di Albino. Widebecks presidium.

*** [English translation available upon request. Contact us for any information!]. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

L'Imprimerie Royale, 1747. First Edition. Hardcover. 4to. Full contemporary calf with gilt titles and decorative spine. Engraved and woodcut initials, woodcut diagrams and head- and tail-pieces. Joints cracked, though intact. Spine laid down. Internally fine, very good overall. With the bookplate of Edward, Duke of Norfolk. Very Good. First edition of an exhaustive work on the fabrication of hemp rope for ships, from raising the plant, to extracting the raw materials, to manufacturing cordage. But perhaps most significant as one of the earliest treatises on the commercial cultivation of cannabis. Includes two lovely and detailed fold-out plates of the male and female plants (both fine) that would make High Times proud. Though not exactly institutionally rare (OCLC locates ten copies of this edition, seven in the U.S.), it is so in the trade, with none currently in commerce and only a handful at auction since 1980. A second volume was published in 1769. Polak, 2858. Scott 341 (citing only the 2nd edition, this one presumably scarcer). [Attributes: First Edition]

Contemporary polished calf, gilt, sides with large gilt arms, panelled spine, red morocco label. Small old library stamp to inner margin of title: "Bibl. Einsiedel. Reibersd." There are several accounts of Italian medical practitioners, including Taddeo, Torrigiano and Dino and Tommaso del Garbo. The Villani family were the leading contemporary chroniclers of fourteenth-century Florence and Filippo was responsible for extending the chronicles of his father and uncle, adding famous portraits of his contemporaries. Towards the end of his life he was appointed public reader of the Divine Comedy and he died in 1404. His chronicle remained in manuscript before being published by the Brescian historian Mazzuchelli in 1747 in this version which was several times reprinted. .

1747. 4to, pp. xii, 252, [10]; with attractive woodcut vignettes, head and tail pieces; some occasional light spotting and marginal browning, otherwise clean and fresh; with contemporary ownership inscriptions at head of both front and rear paste downs (though rather illegible), and on front free end paper '(Greek) Severini Cioccui (?) Vivo Clavis.mo, Gregorio Barbettio'; First edition, and a most attractive copy, of this early and detailed study on malaria as observed in the Neretva delta in Dalmatia by the noted Paduan physician, Giuseppe Pujati (1701-1760). Now a popular Croatian tourist destination, recognised as an area of great natural beauty, diversity of landscape, and ecological importance, at the time of publication the region was an inhospitable marshy valley, beset by a fever that was particularly prevalent during the autumn. In this detailed treatise on the 'Neretva disease', Pujati first presents a brief history of the fever, before examining its' nature and progress, and concluding with an account of a number of historical outbreaks. In this erudite work Pujati makes frequent reference to both contemporary and historical sources, citing authors such as Lancisi, Ramazzini, Boerhaave, Morgani, Winslow, Haller, Heister, Hoffman, Hippocrates and Celsus. Pujati concludes that he believes the disease to be some kind of plague, from which there is little chance of survival, and believed too that the pestiferous stagnant water in certain places could also kill fish, and that marsh birds were also poisoned by the lethal evaporations. Pujati's work was later referred t … [Click Below for Full Description]
