        Recueil de ces Messieurs.

      - Amsterdam [i.e. Paris], frères Wetstein, 1745. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Territorio Veronese - Anno MDCCXLV

S" (Francesco Seguier) e nell'angolo superiore destro "Tom. I. p. I.". Being afraid of losing this gracious weather, my eldest sister and self being better and being vacation when our sad invalid can be removed. I came to proffer my petition to you and Mr. Gordon to favor us with your company this next Saturday Nover 2 at four o clock to our little dinner. We shall send on your horses and servants to the Inn and you must condescend to sleep in a small room in this cottage, to be read to sally forth to the villages next morning at nine. I hope you are not in an open carriage as we do not return till pretty late in the evening or Sunday and you must remain with us till after breakfast on Thursday, and moreover you must put up with all the inconvenience you will meet with. Why I wish to hasten your kind visit is, that if it be deferred I may very likely be laid up again and deprived of the pleasure of attending you my self. You will favor me with a line by the first opportunity and if you will direct your servant to leave it at James the Booksellers in Broad Street (not far from the post office) we shall get it sooner. With kind respects to Mr. Gordon I remain my dear Madam Yrs very obliged and serene. H More". The letter is in very good condition with dark ink, light soiling and mailing folds.

Two folding engraved plates. xi, [5], 390 pp. Small 8vo, cont. red morocco, with the arms in gilt of either the Comtesse de Provence or the Comtesse d'Artois (see below), triple gilt fillet round sides, spine nicely gilt, a.e.g. Paris: J.B. Coignard, 1745. First edition and a lovely copy in contemporary red morocco with arms (see below). "La Garaye (1675-1755), a Breton nobleman and philanthropist, was a diligent chemist who devised a novel method of preparing medicines from minerals by long maceration with neutral salt solutions. He also extracted a number of principles from plants as from Peruvian bark, the extract of which became known as the 'essential salt of Garaye'."-Neville, II, p. 3. "He devised a rapid method of making black oxide of iron, and prepared an ammoniacal chloride of mercury called 'Tinctura mercurialis'."-Ferguson, II, p. 78 (under Marot). It is unusual to find a book of this kind so finely bound. Daughters of King Victor-Amédée III of Sardinia, Marie Joséphine (1753-1810), and Marie Thérèse (1756-1805), married respectively the Comte de Provence (the future Louis XVIII) and the Comte d'Artois (the future Charles X). The arms for their bindings are identical ("le graveur ayant oublié de représenter la bordure crénelée ou dentelée, qui seule permet la discrimination" (OHR 2517). A very fine copy, with the smallest defects to the binding. This is the first issue of the book with the title dated 1745. There is a second issue which appeared a year later with a new title-page and different publisher. ❧ Duveen, p. 391. Hoover 500. Partington, III, pp. 88-89. Quentin-Bauchart, II, pp. 309-331.

Chez Isaac Beauregard|& Pierre Gosse 1745 - - Chez Isaac Beauregard & Pierre Gosse, A La Haye 1745, In-4 (19,5x25cm), (14) 511pp. et (4) 454pp. (10), 2 volumes reliés. - Edition originale, rare. Pages de titre en rouge et noir. Ornements typographiques : bandeaux, culs-de-lampe, lettrines. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] First edition, rare. Bindings plain marbled plain vintage. Back with nerves adorned with boxed glans. Title pieces in brown morocco, and tomaison in red morocco. Friction. 2 blunt corners. Head of Volume I a little soft and fragile. Beautiful paper dominated by the guards.       appresso Giuseppe Marelli, 1745. Cfr. Ouvrage traduit de l'Anglais. Par le C. Henri.Paris, Guillaume, 1797. 2 volumes. 8vo. With 6 folding engraved plates. Contemporary half calf.

Beddie 715; Forbes 277; Kroepelien 946; Sabin 58789; cf. Hill 1308-1309. First edition of the French translation of the best of the unofficial accounts of Cook's first voyage, followed by an extensive summary of Cook's second and third voyages which takes up most of the second volume. Sydney Parkinson (1745?-1771) was engaged by Sir Joseph Banks to accompany him in the Endeavour to the South Seas, as natural history draughtsman. He made numerous botanical drawings as well as landscapes, portraits of local chiefs etc. "Banks spoke highly of his "unbounded industry" in making for him a much larger collection of drawings than he anticipated. His observations, too, were valuable, and the vocabularies of South Sea languages given in the journal are of great interest" (Hill).Parkinson died on January 26, 1771, on the homeward voyage, and was buried at sea. By the terms of his will, his brother Stanfield claimed all of his drawings and proceeded to make preparations, with the assistence of Dr. Kenrick, for a rival publication to Hawkesworth's authorized account of the voyage. Hawkesworth succeeded in court in delaying the Parkinson publication till his own edition would have been published, and he further excluded mention of Parkinson in his account. Before the actual publication in 1773, Stanfield Parkinson died of insanity. The present French translation adds an extensive introduction by the translator Captain Henri and the extensive summary of Cook's second and third voyages as added to the 1784 reissue of the original English edition. With the bookplate of Franz Pollack-Parnau (1903-1981), descendant of a Jewish industrialist family from Vienna, who accumulated an impressive library in the family palace on Schwarzenbergplatz, library stamps of the Verein Humanitas from Vienna and a related owner's inscription on both half-titles. Some spots throughout and the spines restored, but generally in good condition.

Please notify before visiting to see a book. Prices are excl.
