De l'Isle-- Joseph-Nicolas (1688 - 1768)
MAP OF BALTICS FROM THE ATLAS RUSSICUS "DVCATVVM ESTONIA et LIVONIAE, TABVLA cumcursu Fluvii Dwiniae", copper engraving published in St.Petersburg in 1745 by Joseph-Nicolas De l'Isle. Original hand colouring. Size: approx. 50 x 58 cm. From the Atlas Russicus, the first complete printed atlas of Russia. Joseph-NicolasDe l'Isle, younger brother of Guillaume De l'Isle, was invited by Peter the Great to survey the vast empire of Imperial Russia. The enlightened Tzar also invited De l'Isle to found a school of Astronomy in St. Petersburg, and although Peter the Great died a year before De l'Isle arrived in St. Petersburg in 1726, he was successful in achieving both of his Imperial commissions. Together with his partner Ivan Kirilov they founded the school of Astronomy and began the immense task of surveying the Russian Empire. Eventually the two men parted company and Kirilov decided to publish his own incomplete atlas of Russia in 1734, eleven years before De l'Isle's French team finished its more comprehensive work. On his return to Paris in 1747, De l'Isle was able to construct his own observatory in the palace of Cluny, the same observatory later made famous by French astronomer Charles Messier. Price: Euro650,-.

[STOCK CERTIFICATE - SURINAM COFFEE PLANTATIONS]
[4] pp.Rare stock certificate for a share in three coffee plantations in Surinam, which was then a Dutch colony. The plantations had gone up for execution sale because the owners, Hubert van Hermaal & Van den Bosch, had gone out of business. The three coffee plantations named in the present certificate are Monsort and Le Contentement on the Cottica River and De Vier Kinderen on the Commewijne River (the last may have remained in planning, for the certificate mentions only its gound). The plantations in Suriname were large agricultural companies, established for profit and specialized in a single product, in this case coffee. They relied on investments to produce products for the world market. Signed by the notary Johannes Arnoldus Lette (1745-1820) and Rocquette & van de Poll, who were the administrators of the sale. when the partnership that had owned the property was established in 1770, its official name referred to Van den Bosch without a first name, but the director was Willem van den Bosch Gerritsz. They offered 500 shares of 1000 guilders each to raise a capital of 500,000 guilders and were to pay 6% interest per year and also pay back 10% of the capital after ten years (so a total of 350,000 guilders in the first ten years and more thereafter). They apparently defaulted, hence the present new stock issue in 1796.With several annotations and stamps. Three folds, slightly browned and frayed along the folds, minor spotting.l Cf. A. van Stipriaan, Surinaams contrast: roofbouw en overleven in een Caraïbische plantagekolonie 1750-1863 (1993); for the failed firm: Bijd … [Click Below for Full Description]

Covens & Mortier
"Mappe-Monde Dress? sur les Observations de Mrs. De L'Academie Royale des Sciences et quelques autres et sur les memoires les plus recens Par M. De L'Isle." Copper engraving published by Covens & Mortier in Amsterdam 1745. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 50,8 x 63,5 cm. Guillaume De L'Isle's world map was originally published in 1700 and then revised and republished throughout the 18th century by De L'Isle and by subsequent map publishers. Dutch publishers Covens & Mortier's first version of De L'Isle's map was produced in 1720 adding the seascape with ships on the horizon at the bottom decorated with a second cartouche in the shape of a sea monster with a mermaid, merman and dolphins. They issued a later edition of that map (shown here) in about 1745 with the additional subtitle "Nouvellement corrig?e apres les dernieres Decouvertes faites par l'Academie de Petersbough." The map consists of two central hemispheres, eastern and western, surrounded by four smaller polar projections. The right hand projections focus on the Northern Hemisphere while the left hand projections depict the Southern. At top center there is an elaborate decorative cartouche with various allegorical elements depicting the four great continents in female form, from top left: America, Europa, Africa, and Asia. The routes of a number of the most famous explorers of the major oceans of the world are shown from 1542 to approximately 1730, ending with the Russian voyages of Chirikov and Bering. Some of the more noteworthy features of the map includes the Russian explorations along the Northwestern coast of … [Click Below for Full Description]

SEUTTER, Matthäus.
Augsburg, c.1745. Original colour. 510 x 575mm. An uncommon map of the environs of Tharangambadi (in Tamil Nadu), purchased by the Danish East India company in 1620 as their attempt to enter the East India trade. The layout of the town is shown, as are the defences of Fort Dansborg, the second-largest fortification ever built by the Danes. In 1845 the fort was sold to the British, but they had better trading locations so the importance of Tharangambadi for the Europeans dwindled. A very fine example.

Nordberg, Georg Andreas
Bd. I (Erster Theil): Erstes bis neuntes Hauptstück. Mit 12 überwiegend ausfaltbaren Karten (10 Bl., 704 S.) Bd. II (Zweter Theil): Zehntes bis ei … [Click Below for Full Description]

[28], 354 pp. Rare first edition, in the original Portuguese, of the first biography of the Catholic priest and missionary Joseph Vaz (Goa, India 1651-Kandy, Ceylon, now Sri Lanka, 1711), born to Catholic parents from small villages in the province of Goa: Brahmins said to have come from the Konkani ethnic and linguistic group. The VOC (Dutch East India Company) had expelled the Portuguese from Ceylon in the years 1639-1658. Dutch Calvinist missionaries began operating there and frequently persecuted and repressed Catholics, in spite of the Dutch reputation for tolerance in their own republic. In 1687, concluding the his new community could already stand on its own feet, Vaz emigrated to Ceylon to help Catholics there and attempt to spread the faith, walking barefoot through the whole island, often disguised as a beggar. He was briefly imprisoned, accused of being a Portuguese spy. When smallpox broke out in 1697, he both cared for the sick and introduced hygienic regulations. He learned to speak both Sinhalese and Tamil and remains a symbol of tolerance among rival ethnic groups. He was also befriended by the Buddhist King Vimaladharmasuriya II of the East Ceylonese Kingdom of Kandy, which had negotiated with and fought against both the Portuguese and the Dutch. He died in that kingdom. The revival of Catholicism in Ceylon came largely thanks to his efforts. Although movements to grant hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Nieuwe vesting-bouw, ... vermeerdert door Johan Jacob Wertmuller. ... Tweeden druk.Dordrecht, Christoffel der Moey, 1745. 8vo. With an engraved half-title, 18 folding engraved plates and letterpress tables. 18th-century calf, gold-tooled spine. Engraved half-title + [16], 205, [3] pp. + plates. First and only Dutch edition (very rare second and last issue) of a great classic of French fortification by Blaise François Pagan (1604-1665), first published in French in 1645 and here based on the greatly revised and expanded German edition by Johan Jacob Wertmüller, published in 1684. Pagan was a major influence on Vauban, but Vauban's advances in the 1670s rendered the older manual out of date. Wertmüller's 1684 Frankfurt edition brought it up to date, giving it new life for seventy years. The present edition, the last in any language, was first published by Joan Block in The Hague in 1738 and is here reissued with a cancel title-page but with the same engraved half-title, though the title-page calls it a second edition. We have located only one other copy of the 1745 issue, at Leiden University Library. With manuscript notes on the half-title and title-page. With marginal water stains at the lower outside corner and many plates and text quires somewhat browned or foxed, but otherwise in good condition. Binding rubbed, and worn at the hinges. PRATILLI, Francesco Maria.
Folio. With engraved illustration on title-page, 3 folding engraved maps and 1 full-page engraved map in text. Contemporary vellum. [8], 566, [2] pp. First edition of a comprehensive account of the entire Via Appia, one of the main ancient roads through Italy, by the Italian priest Francesco Maria Pratilli (1689-1763). It is divided into 4 "libri", each treating a different part of the road from Rome southeast to Brindisi, mentioning places to eat, historical monuments (it passes some of the finest Republican and Imperial inscriptions), markets, cities etc., which can be found along the road. In the 19th century it was discovered that Pratilli was involved in a vast series of skilled forgeries, referring to and making up sources that never existed. Nevertheless, the present work contains some new and valuable information and remained an important work on the Via Appia for a long time: "Travail important et rempli d'érudition" (Brunet). With bookplate and library stamp. Endleaves smudged, but text in very good condition. Binding only slightly rubbed along the extremities, but otherwise good. Ebert 17903; Brunet IV, col. 857.

Contemporary calf. [14], 111, [8], [1 blank]; X, 322 pp. Ad 1: Very rare first edition of the earliest book on beer in Dutch, written by the Rotterdam brewer, pharmacist and physician Wouter van Lis (1709-1784). It is a full guide to the process of brewing beer, noting various types of beer, ingredients and equipment. As can be expected from a physician, the last and most extensive chapter deals with the health benefits of beer. In the introduction Van Lis notes the lack of publications in Dutch on the topic. Another extremely rare posthumous publication from his hand appeared in Brussels in 1793, entitled Den volmaekten bierbrouwer, which according to the title-page is the second edition and contains much of the contents of the present work, but also adds new chapters. He also published a pharmacopeia in 1747.Ad 2: Rare enlarged second edition of an early French guide to brewing beer, mainly following the English tradition, but also referring to French, Dutch and German traditions. It was first published in 1783 and written by the 18th-century chemist and expert on dyeing Charles Le Pileur d'Appligny. Some negligible thumbing to the first few leaves and a small tear in the title-page of ad 1; ad 2 lacking an … [Click Below for Full Description]

WOOD, John, the Elder.
Bath: Sold by J. Leake; C. Hitch, in Pater-noster-Row, London; and B. Hickley, in Bristol, MDCCXLV [ 1745]. Limited to 300 copies. 8vo, pp. [1-4] [4] 'Advertisement' and 'Subscribers' [5]-36 [2] 'Advertisement', 8 engraved plates by P. Fourdrinier, of which 6 double-page; modern marbled boards, with printed label to spine; this copy appears to have been Earl Cowper's copy. Although John Wood (1704-1754) is chiefly known for his work at Bath, his finest building is generally thought to be his design of the Exchange of Bristol. Wood gives an account of the building together with information on the site, discussions with the town council, alterations to his original plan and the festivities occasioned by the opening of the exchange. The work is finely illustrated with plans, elevations, and sections of the work carried out by Wood. 'The appointment [of Wood as architect] together with that of several prominent craftsmen from Bath, gave rise to local resentment, and Wood failed to have his full scheme, centred on an Egyptian hall, accepted; but the principal elevation of the exchange, a tauter version of the Queen Square design [Bath], perfectly proportioned and enriched by Thomas Paty's superb carving, it is arguably Wood's finest architectural composition and one of the most distinguished examples of English Palladianism. Its success led Bristol's great rival, Liverpool, to commission Wood in 1749 to design a combined exchange and town hall, a further development of the same scheme, the building of which was supervised by his eldest son; following a fire in 1795 it was much a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Innen durchgehend fleckig und am Schluss wasserrandig. Handschriftlicher Besitzervermerk auf 1. Titel. Einige unscheinbare Bleistiftanstreichungen. Gutes Leseexemplar. [Click Below for Full Description]

FRANKLIN, BENJAMIN, Printer). CHURCH OF SCOTLAND
Philadelphia: Printed by B. Franklin, 1745. Second American Edition. 175 x 110 mm. (6 7/8 x 4 1/4"). [4] leaves, numbered [463]-470. Second American Edition. Modern brown buckram, smooth spine with gilt titling. Miller 371; Evans 5709. Endpapers somewhat foxed, text rather browned (due to paper quality), margins trimmed a bit close, grazing a couple of page numbers at head, one corner lacking tip, a couple of leaves with minor stains, but a very good copy, with nothing approaching a fatal defect, in an unworn utilitarian binding. Issued when the future Founding Father was just 39 years old and the Revolution was more than 30 years away, this is an excerpt from the 567-page "Confession of Faith" printed for the Presbyterian Synod of Philadelphia, and a desirable artifact of American printing. The first American edition of the "Confession" appeared in Boston in 1723; the text here is based, not on that issue, but on the 1728 Edinburgh version, which, Miller tells us, "represented the norm of Scottish editions," with "accurate text." The present section documents the Scottish Church's refusal to submit to "prelacy," the hierarchy of archbishops, bishops, and other clerical offices used in the Church of England, and affirms the Scots' support of Parliament and the king, while not acknowledging the monarch as head of their church. Originally crafted as an agreement between Scots Protestants and Parliamentary forces during the English Civil War, the covenant was amended after the Restoration to pledge to "preserve and defend" the king. Franklin (1706-90) began his printing … [Click Below for Full Description]

Continuing his travels he made regular notes intending to produce a number of works, none of which appeared. Nonetheless, 'his undertaking was an extraordinarily ambitious one and marks the beginning of English topographical studies' (ODNB). Leland's notes found their way into the Bodleian and, recognising their importance, sub-librarian Thomas Hearne (1678-1735) arranged for their printing in 1710-12. Only 120 copies of the first edition were printed, meaning that it quickly became prohibitively expensive and very difficult to obtain.
