Amsterdam, c. 1745.

Cordier, Japonica, col. 449; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 536; Tiele, Bibl. 1096 note. The Dutch scholar Isaac Titsingh (1745-1812) was head of the Dutch trading post at Dejima and spent in total some 44 months in Japan (in the years 1779-1780, 1781-1783, and 1784). He collected material for a monumental work on Japan, but published only several brief essays during his lifetime. The Paris-based publisher Nepveu posthumously issued two volumes of selections from Titsingh's papers, translated into French: Cérémonies usitées en Japon pour les mariages et les funérailles (1819) and Mémoires et anecdotes de la dynastie regnante des Djogouns (1820). The present second edition combines these two works, leaving out some short essays. The first volume consists of essays on Japanese marriage ceremonies, the second is devoted to funeral ceremonies and some other feasts, and includes an account of "dosia", a powdered recreational and medicinal drug, while the final volume consists of a series of anecdotes about the shoguns. In very good condition, with some plates slightly tattered at the edges. The bindings show some light wear.

Impressment order to Captain Charles Windham, "By the Commissioners for Executing the Office of Lord High Admiral".

London: Office of Admiralty, 10 December 1745. Printed sheet completed in manuscript, 395 x 235 mm. A rare example of one of the Admiralty-printed orders relating to impressment as promulgated in 1745. This particular example was made out to Captain Windham commanding HMS Duke, and is signed by Anson only a year after he returned from his circumnavigation, as well as his fellow Lords of the Admiralty George Grenville and Henry Legge, and Secretary to the Admiralty Thomas Corbett.Windham was thus empowered to impress seamen for his own command and for others of His Majesty's ships as needed. HMS Duke was a 17th-century ship, named Vanguard when first launched, rebuilt after sinking in 1703 and again rebuilt in 1739 as a 90-gun second rate, at which point the ship was renamed the Duke.Anson had joined the Admiralty Board in December 1744, soon after his return from the circumnavigation and at the height of his fame. He subsequently served as First Lord of the Admiralty from June 1751 to November 1756, and again from June 1757 until his death. Torn with slight loss at upper left, old folds; very good.

Planisphere Representant Toute L'Etendue du Monde.

Amsterdam: Reiner Ottens, 1745. Engraved handcoloured map with ornate neoclassical ornamentation, 538 x 313 mm. (sheet size). A magnificent French early eighteenth-century map of the world depicting the orb resting upon the shoulders of a finely engraved Hercules, complete with club and lion-skin cloak. The map is from the Atlas de la Navigation et du Commerce first published by Louis Renard and reissued twice by the Amsterdam bookseller Reiner Ottens in 1739 and 1745. This is a partially coloured issue, with the continents treated in primary colours, and is a fine example of Dutch neoclassical ornamentation. This map treats Australia as a super-continent: it is labelled both Terres Australes and Nouvelle Hollande and incorporates qualities of both geographical conceptions. While the Australian coast has no pretensions to exactitude it is nonetheless interesting that a strait is shown between New Guinea and Terres Australes. The extreme extension of the antipodes on this map is unusual given the north polar perspective it is generated from.Louis Renard (c.1678-1746), was a French born entrepreneur and spy for the English monarchy who flourished in Amsterdam as a printer and bookseller. He published a wide range of works aside from his maps and atlases, and is best known for his beautifully illustrated handbook of tropical marine fishes first published in 1719. In addition to selling books and prints, Renard traded as an apothecary and broker of English bonds in the Netherlands. For some years he was in the employment of the English crown as an agent and spy, and during his lifetime worked for Queen Anne, the Kings George I and George II. Fine.

Mid 19th-century gold-tooled green calf, with the emblematic device of the "Bibliotheca de Salvá" and initials VSP (=Vicente Salvá y Pérez) on each board.

      - Biblioteca de Salvá 2513 (this copy); Derra de Moroda 925; Huth library 2848; cf. S.S. Bueno "Reglas útiles para los aficionados a danzar , de Bartolomé Ferriol i Boxeraus" ; Magriel, p. 98 (Malaga ed.); Palau 90688-90789 (Naples & Malaga ed.). One of the three editions, all dated 1745, of a richly illustrated work on dancing by the Catalan dance instructor D. Bartolome Ferriol y Boxereaux. Derra de Moroda considers it one of the two principal works of 18th-century dance in Spain ("a very rare book"), although it primarily describes the practice of French dance then in vogue. The main text is divided into 3 parts treating the different steps of French dance, the movement of the legs and arms and the art of choreography. It shows both the dance notation of Feuillet and that of Rameau. The book is fascinating not only as an important record of dance and its notation, but also for its experimental graphic design. From the Salvá library, formed by Vicente Salvá y Pérez (1780-1849) and his son, Pedro Salvá y Mallén (1811-1869). Title-page restored in the gutter margin and leaf C2 with a small corner torn off just touching the catchword. Very good copy of one of the principal sources on the history of dancing in Spain in the 18th century.

A Perspective View of the Engine, made use of for Sawing off under Water, The Piles which help'd to support the Centers, for turning the Arches of Westminster Bridge most humbly inscribed to the Right Honble. The Commissioners for building the said Bridge by the Inventor.

May 1, 1745., [London], - An underwater saw Engraved print with manuscript annotation. An intriguing print showing an underwater saw, signed by the inventor. The inventor, William Etheridge (1709-1776) was a master carpenter. He worked with James King to build the first bridge at Westminster, and took over as foreman after King died. As well as the underwater saw, he also invented a battering ram to help strike the centres. He also worked on the Walton Bridge and designed Queens' Bridge in Cambridge. His name and profession has been added by hand to the dedication. The project the saw was invented for was Westminster Bridge, designed by Charles Labelye (1705-62), an engineer and architect. Labelye was given the project in 1738 and initially designed a timber superstructure augmented with stone. However, during the severe winter of 1739-40 the Thames froze and the existing timber was destroyed. Labelye regrouped and designed a Portland stone bridge instead. Paul Fourdrinier (1698-1758) was a Huguenot engraver who came to work in England, specialising in architectural subjects. Not in the British Library; possibly an earlier state than the copy in the British Museum, which is undated, published by Carington Bowles and etched by John June. Quarta impressione.

Antonio Bortoli, 1745. In 4°, pp. (8), 86, (2).
