        Daphnis et Chloe

1745. LONGUS. Les Amours Pastorales de Daphnis et Chloé. [Paris]: no publisher, 1745. Small octavo, contemporary full speckled polished calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, red morocco spine label, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $3200.Second edition of this delightfully illustrated French translation of Longus’ classic, the first pastoral prose romance, with engraved title page and 29 fine copper-engravings, 13 double-page, after original drawings by Philippe duc d’Orléans, Regent during the minority of Louis XV. A very handsome copy in contemporary French calf-gilt binding.“The reputation of this little book derives primarily from the story of how it came into being. In 1714 Prince Philippe d’Orléans made a series of drawings for the story of Daphnis and Chloe under the tutelage of Antoine Coypel, the father of Charles-Antoine Coypel. At the beginning of his Regency the drawings were engraved by Benoît Audran and published in [the 1718] edition of Longus’ pastoral novel… The prestige conferred by the participation of Philippe d’Orléans made Daphnis et Chloé a fixture in the collections of French bibliophiles (it came to be known as ‘the Regent’s book’), and it is often found in elaborate bindings” (Ray). Written by Longus in the second or third century A.D., Daphnis and Chloe is considered the first pastoral prose romance; the translation into French is by Jacques Amyot, with notes by A. Lancelot. The very scarce 1718 first edition is reputed to have consisted of only 250 copies. Two editions were issued in 1745, with the same illustrations as the 1718 edition—though re-engraved—differing slightly in the setting of text and the order of the engraved headpieces (no priority established). With the “Les petits pieds” plate by the Comte de Caylus bound in near the end of the book, only “sometimes added” to copies, “better known than any of the original illustrations,” perhaps due to its “mildly suggestive” content. Engraved title page dated 1718, the year of the first edition. Cohen-de Ricci 652. Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book 2B. A fine, wide-margined copy of “The Regent’s Book,” desirable in lovely contemporary French calf-gilt.

Amsterdam, c. 1745.

Contemporary calf, spine with raised bands in seven compartments, red and black morocco lettering piece in the second and third, the other with a repeat decoration in gilt, expert repairs at joints and top and tail of spine Provenance: John Rolle, 1st Baron Rolle (armorial bookplate) A very fine set of the first edition of one of the first accurate records of Middle-Eastern antiquities and culture to be published in the modern era. After graduating from Oxford, Pococke spent three years travelling in the Middle East, from 1735 to 1738. Upon his return he combined determined scholarly curiosity with artistic ability of the highest order. In his work, he provides descriptions of all aspects of the region, its history and cultures, illustrated by detailed plans and fine plates of costumes, plants and views. As one of the first Englishmen to record his journey up the Nile, his beautifully illustrated account is particularly valuable as an early record of Egyptian antiquities as they stood at the start of the modern era. Pococke visited Thebes and travelled as far south as Philae and the First Cataract at Philae. On his return journey northwards he met, by chance, Danish traveller Frederik Norden (1708-1742). Norden continued southwards, eventually reaching Derr. Both travellers made careful drawings of the Great Sphinx at Giza, but Pococke employed some artistic license and replaced the colossal statue's missing nose. The publication of the present work brought prestige to Pococke and he was subsequently made a founder member of the Egyptian Club.       Cordier, Japonica, col. 449; Landwehr & V.d. Krogt, VOC 536; Tiele, Bibl. 1096 note. The Dutch scholar Isaac Titsingh (1745-1812) was head of the Dutch trading post at Dejima and spent in total some 44 months in Japan (in the years 1779-1780, 1781-1783, and 1784). He collected material for a monumental work on Japan, but published only several brief essays during his lifetime. The Paris-based publisher Nepveu posthumously issued two volumes of selections from Titsingh's papers, translated into French: Cérémonies usitées en Japon pour les mariages et les funérailles (1819) and Mémoires et anecdotes de la dynastie regnante des Djogouns (1820). The present second edition combines these two works, leaving out some short essays. The first volume consists of essays on Japanese marriage ceremonies, the second is devoted to funeral ceremonies and some other feasts, and includes an account of "dosia", a powdered recreational and medicinal drug, while the final volume consists of a series of anecdotes about the shoguns. In very good condition, with some plates slightly tattered at the edges.

Impressment order to Captain Charles Windham, "By the Commissioners for Executing the Office of Lord High Admiral".

London: Office of Admiralty, 10 December 1745. Printed sheet completed in manuscript, 395 x 235 mm. A rare example of one of the Admiralty-printed orders relating to impressment as promulgated in 1745. This particular example was made out to Captain Windham commanding HMS Duke, and is signed by Anson only a year after he returned from his circumnavigation, as well as his fellow Lords of the Admiralty George Grenville and Henry Legge, and Secretary to the Admiralty Thomas Corbett.Windham was thus empowered to impress seamen for his own command and for others of His Majesty's ships as needed. HMS Duke was a 17th-century ship, named Vanguard when first launched, rebuilt after sinking in 1703 and again rebuilt in 1739 as a 90-gun second rate, at which point the ship was renamed the Duke.Anson had joined the Admiralty Board in December 1744, soon after his return from the circumnavigation and at the height of his fame. He subsequently served as First Lord of the Admiralty from June 1751 to November 1756, and again from June 1757 until his death. Torn with slight loss at upper left, old folds; very good.
