The book is written with compelling lucidity and charm, and is one of Berkeley's major works, though his last substantial treatise. Robert Eden
Theatre Sheldoniano Oxford, 1744. Note inside front: foxing: boards off: loose pages. Interesting and Rare eighteenth century example of comparative law. This textbook by Robert Eden (1701-1759) presents an annotated summary fo Roman law arranged in the order of Justinian's Institures with references to parallel rules in English law. Eden was an archdeacon of Winchester. This is in acceptable condition; the pages are present but some are dry and chipped, the first several are loose (including the frontispiece of Justinian) and the first sixteen pages, while attached to each other, are loose from the book. There is a note inside the front board which, while interesting, seems unrelated to the text and which we are assuming was used to protect the block and loose pages to some degree. It is possible that this is original to the book as the J Rhea Barton married Anne Frazer whose father was district attorney for Delaware County. Barton was a surgeon in Philadelphia. Acceptable Condition: 4to: Leather boards (may be protective rather than original) both off with scuffing, evidence of water exposure, peeling and scrapes: corners peeled and chipped: paper inside with notes: loose pages at front up to and including page 16: foxing and discoloration of paper due to age: chipped page edges: last page of Index loose: Frontispiece of Justinian: "Jurisprudentia Philologica, sive Elementa Juris Civilis, secundum Methodum et Seriem Institutionum Justiniani, In Brevem & Facilem Ordinem redacta , Notis Classiciis & Historicis nec non Parellelis Juris Anglicani Locis Illustrata": Robert Ede … [Click Below for Full Description]

Colonna, Fabio
Milan: Viviani, 1744. Second Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Plus.. 6.25" x 8.5", pp. lii, 134, title page lynx illustration, 36 copper plate engravings of plant and marine life in rear. Boards are edge worn, writing on endpapers, Edward Sandford Burgess bookplates (2) adhered to front endpapers with was appear to be his notes laid in. A lawyer by trade, Colonna turned to his naturalist studies after discovering valerian to be a powerful deterrent for his epilepsy. Phytobasanos is thought to be the first book with copper plate engravings of plants, which allowed for much more detail than the popular woodcut method. Unique in its own right, the scarcity of this book is compounded by it's previous ownership. From the personal collection of educator and botanist Edward Sanford Burgess, who gained notoriety for his two monumental works on the genus Aster. He is credited with describing at least 40 new taxa. Presumably this book was used as a reference in his research, per the many floral engravings in rear and notes laid in.

DOBBS, Arthur (1689-1765)
printed by J. Robinson, London, 1744. (10 x 8 inches). [2], ii, 211, [1]pp. Folding engraved map "A New Map of part of North America." 7 lines of errata at foot of final page. Scattered minor foxing. Contemporary speckled calf, rebacked spine with raised bands in six compartments, titled in second compartment, red morocco lettering piece, bordered in gilt. Provenance: Edwin Sandys, Baron Sandys (armorial bookplate) Large paper copy of the first edition of this attack on the Hudson's Bay Company monopoly in the Americas, with a valuable early account of the search for a Northwest Passage. Dobbs was an active opponent of the monopoly of the Hudson's Bay Company pointing out that if they did not alter their policies, then the French would quickly occupy the central plains to the west of their traditional areas of influence (as, in fact, they did). This and other works on a similar theme by Dobbs led to the investigation of the monopoly by a British Parliamentary committee in 1749. Dobbs never saw the Bay and his information was largely based on French publications and Canadian sources, particularly that of Métis trader Joseph La France. According to Peter C. Newman, the account of La France's exploits is this work's "most valuable historical contribution" ( Empire of the Sun [2000], p.213). The second main thrust of Dobbs' narrative concerns his advocacy of the necessity of searching for a Northwest Passage: he gives an account of the early exploration of the area, and of the opportunities that further exploration would offer. In addition, he fires the opening broadside in his … [Click Below for Full Description]
