Asia secundum legitimas Projectionis Steriographicae regulas.

Artist: Homann Erben (d) ; issued in: Nuremberg; date: (d)1744 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Very good; - size (in cm): 47,5 x 52,5; - description: Map shows total Asia with partly Europe; - vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

The series of 14 plates, each showing one of the stages as well as characters portraying a scene from a particular play, were published between 1787 and 1794 by the Amsterdam publisher Jan Willem Smit. Most of the prints contain a border, printed from a different plate, showing parts of an audience and the theatre. Versions without the border, such as the current series, which "could be included with the theatrical plays" (Amsterdam) were also available. With the paper somewhat worn at the edges, all plates with a few spots and smudges in the margins, "Het gotisch paleis" with several large smudges and "De kerker" with a small spot in the lower right of the image. A good set of several of the Amsterdam decor engravings in the version without the border.

Volume 4 contains the Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems (Dialogo sopra i due massimi sistemi del mondo), first published in 1632. Despite taking care to adhere to the Inquisition's 1616 instructions, the claims in the book favouring Copernican theory and a non Geocentric model of the solar system led to Galileo being tried and banned on publication. Despite the ban, Galileo published his Discourses and Mathematical Demonstrations Relating to Two New Sciences (Discorsi e Dimostrazioni Matematiche, intorno a due nuove scienze) in 1638 in Holland, outside the jurisdiction of the Inquisition. "- Nice, only very little browning, few light stains in few margins, little marginal worming not touching the text. Endpapers renewed. Mostly very crisp, uncut and wide-margined.

Chadenat I, 754. Larousse.

A SERMON PREACH'D IN NEW-ARK, JUNE 12. 1744. AT THE ORDINATION OF MR. DAVID BRAINERD, A MISSIONARY AMONG THE INDIANS UPON THE BORDERS OF THE PROVINCES OF NEW-YORK, NEW-JERSEY, AND PENNSYLVANIA.... WITH AN APPENDIX, TOUCHING THE INDIAN AFFAIRS

Boston: Rogers and Fowle, 1744. [1],iv,39pp. Later plain wrappers. Light dampstaining and scattered foxing. Very good. A very rare pamphlet relating to the missionary work of David Brainerd amongst the Indians in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania in the mid-18th century. Ebenezer Pemberton was a prominent Boston-born minister. He served as minister of New York's First Presbyterian Church from 1726 through 1753, during which time he also served as a member of the New Jersey Board of the Society in Scotland for Propagating Christian Knowledge. This society, an Anglican missionary organization, was founded to establish schools and promote the faith in "uncivilized" parts of the Scottish Highlands and among the American Indians in the colonies. The organization hired missionaries in the colonies including David Brainerd who was approved for missionary work in November 1742. Shortly thereafter, Brainerd began his work proselytizing to American Indians in Pennsylvania, New York, and especially in New Jersey where his ministry proved most fruitful. Following his ordination in 1744 at which Pemberton delivered this sermon, Brainerd continued to work and live among the American Indians. He preached to tribes in Kaunaumeek (a settlement in the woods between Stockbridge and Albany), and then at present day Easton, Pennsylvania, and also at Crosweeksung (now Crosswicks, New Jersey). Expelled from Yale for sympathizing with the Whitefield revival and for remarking that a college tutor had "no more grace than this chair," Brainerd was nevertheless successful as a missionary to various Indian tribes in the Massachusetts- New York border region and in New Jersey. He died at the age of twenty-nine in the home of Jonathan Edwards, whose daughter he was engaged to marry. With the publication of his journal and biographies detailing his life, Brainerd became a popular and influential figure among leading Christians and missionaries. Perhaps because of its connection to the short and inspirational life of Brainerd, the sermon printed here became one of Pemberton's most famous. The appendix, which contains "a short Account of the Endeavours....to introduce the Gospel among the I Indians upon borders of New-York," is actually written by Brainerd, in the form of a letter to Pemberton. In it he describes in detail the year he spent in northern New York in 1743-44, and his endeavors as a minister. One of the earliest accounts of Brainerd's missonary work, and quite rare on the market. ESTC W3138. EVANS 5471. HOWES P190. SABIN 59608.

One of the earliest accounts of Brainerd's missonary work, and quite rare on the market. ESTC W3138. EVANS 5471. HOWES P190. SABIN 59608.

Gersaint

Engraved frontis. by Cochin. 2 p.l. (incl. frontis.), iii-xviii, [4], 294, [2], 96 pp. 12mo, cont. polished calf (one corner a little rounded), flat spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: J. Barois, 1744. A notable copy of this important catalogue compiled by Gersaint (d. 1750); it is one of the rare examples priced throughout with most of the buyers' names. This copy belonged to Baron Pichon, the great 19th-century book collector, and he has written on the free front-endpaper: "Il est rare de trouver ce catalogue avec des noms d'acquérieurs comme en a la présent exemplaire. B.J.P." "Rare…This is one of the most important catalogs prepared by the prolific Gersaint and is innovative is several ways. Besides the substantial descriptions of the collection objects, he has included biographies of several artists. In addition, the catalog also includes the most complete list of the work of the French artist and engraver, Jacques Callot [1592-1635], including prints not included in the sale… "The collection was notable for its fine paintings, drawings and prints. The drawings were mainly Dutch and Flemish, including numerous landscapes, or French. Also included were a group of almost 500 drawings by Claude Gillot. The prints represented a comprehensive survey of the Northern, Italian and French schools. Also included in this catalog are his collections of illuminations, books, shells, corals, atlases and maps, and natural history objects including a few minerals."-Schuh, Mineralogy & Crystallography: A Biobibliography, 1469 to 1920, 1875. Egerton; Invertebrate Zoology and Parasitology During the 1700s p. 416-17: 'Regeneration in hydra was discovered by a Genevan scholar living in The Netherlands, Abraham Trembly (1710-1784), [.]. When Trembly discovered a green hydra (= Chlorohydra viridissima) [.] he was uncertain whether it was animal or plant. He thought he could decide by cutting it in half and seeing if it died like an animal or regenerated like a plant. It did regenerate, but its behavior left him uncertain. On 26 September, he initiated a correspondence with Réaumur [.]. After Trembley sent him live specimens, Réaumur assured him that they were animals. By the time Trembley sent an account to the Royal Society of London (1743), word of his sensational discovery had arrived several times [.]. The book he published on his experiments in 1744 explained more than 50 discoveries, including green hydras moving towards light despite the lack of eyes. He was highly praised both for his techniques and conclusions [.]. The illustrations were drawn and engraved by his friend and fellow naturalist, Pierre Lyonet (1706-1789), whose own anatomical studies and illustrations of insects made him the worthy successor of Swammerdam and Malpighi [.].'

An Account of the Glacieres, or Ice Alps in Savoy.

London: printed for Peter Martel, and sold by W. Meadows [and 5 others],, 1744. In Two Letters, one from an English Gentleman to his Friend at Geneva, the other from Peter Martel, Engineer, to the said English Gentleman. Illustrated with a Map, and two Views of the Place, etc., as laid before the Royal Society. Quarto (270 x 206 mm), 28 pp. Original plain paper wrappers, manuscript title inked to front panel. Housed in a dark blue quarter morocco slipcase with chemise by the Chelsea Bindery. 2 copper-engraved folding plates. "Lucanus cervus", the Linnaean classification for the stag beetle, inscribed to the rear wrapper upside-down in a contemporary hand; later discreet monogram "GHM" inked to front wrapper verso. Wrappers marked, contents variably spotted, soiled and damp-stained, initial blank excised as often, title page marked, and chipped at lower outer corner to no loss of text, nevertheless a very good copy. First edition of one of the most important works of early mountaineering literature, and "the cornerstone for a Mont Blanc collection" (Meckly), the second plate incorporating the first printed map to identify the mountain by name. Extremely rare in the original wrappers, with the scattering of copies traced in auction records either rebound or part of a sammelband, and often heavily restored; this copy additionally has the contemporary ownership inscription "M. Maty" to the title page, likely that of the noted Dutch Huguenot physician and librarian Matthew Maty (1718-1776), who arrived in London in 1740 and in 1756 became one of the three original keepers of the British Museum. Windham, the son of a wealthy Norfolk landowner, spent time in Geneva among a circle of British expatriates known as the Common Room, and with a few other members of the circle joined Richard Pococke's expedition to Chamonix in June 1741. The group scaled the Montenvers and formally discovered the Mer de Glace, depicted in one of the plates; thus they appear to have become the first recorded travellers for pleasure in the region. Windham's pioneering account "is always linked with that of Pierre Martel, who visited Chamonix the following year. Both their original accounts were written in French and circulated in Geneva in manuscript only. A version (still in French) of the two manuscripts, edited by Leonard Boulacre, was published in Journal Helvetique, May-June, 1743" (Neate). The records of the printer, William Bowyer, show that 500 copies were printed (ESTC). A second edition was printed at Ipswich in 1747.
