Several of the plans are likely based on real gardens, for example the plan of the garden of Schloss Klesheim at the end of the 1720s.In 1728 Franz Anton Danreiter (1695-1760) was appointed court gardener and inspector to related buildings by the ducal bishop of Salzburg. Danreiter served five successive bishops in Salzburg. Between 1727 and 1735 he also engraved a number of large-scale views of the city which represent a unique documentation of Salzburg in its 18th century baroque glory. The title-page with a reinforced horizontal fold and some smudges, and a few leaves with minor thumbing and foxing; the plates in very good condition. La vie du venerable pere Ignace Azevedo, de la Compagnie de Jesus. L'histoire de son martyre, & de celui de trente-neuf autres de la même Compagnie. Le tout tiré des procès-verbaux dressés pour leur canonisation. Dédiée au Roi de Pologne.Paris, Hippolyte-Louis Guerin, 1744. 12mo. With engraved armorial headpiece above the dedication to King Stanislaus I of Poland. Contemporary mottled calf, gold-tooled spine, gold fillets on board edges. XLIII, [5], 300 pp. First edition of a French biography of the Jesuit martyr Ignacio de Azevedo, by Father Gilles-François Beauvais (1695-1773), who modelled his book on the Italian biography by Father Cabral (pseudonym of Giulio Cesare Cordara) (1704-1785), published at Rome in 1743 under the title Relazione della vita e martirio del venerabile padre Ignazio de Azevedo. In the present biography, dedicated to King Stanislaus I of Poland, Beauvais made several additions, for example the "Martyre du Vénérable Père Diaz et de ses Compagnons", pp. 193-262. Most of the book is devoted to the life of the martyr Ignatius de Azevedo from Porto (1528-1570), who worked in Brazil as Visitator for the Jesuit Order. On 15 July 1570, he and his 39 companions at sea were killed by French Calvinist pirates near the Canary Islands. In 1854, these "40 martyrs of Brazil" were canonized. Beauvais's biography may be regarded as a loose translation, with additional material, of Cordara's biography, which was translated into Spanish in the same year and into German in 1856. A second edition of Beauvais's version was published at Brussels in 1854. The martyrdom of … [Click Below for Full Description]

Paris, Claude Simon for François Didot, 1744. 2 volumes. 12mo. With two folding engraved maps by F. [1], [1 blank], XVI, 370; [1], [1 blank], 400 pp. First edition of a fictional account of travels through Africa, Asia and the Americas. It describes the travels of its supposed author, an English mariner called Robert Lade, in his quest for profit and adventure. Along the way, Lade meets several nonfictional mariners and the book even contains a pastiche of the story of Alexander Selkirk, claiming he was actually called Selcrag. Its authentic effect is enhanced by a pair of maps by the eminent cartographer Bellin and several lists and tables, including the exchange rate for beaver pelts in the Hudson Bay, a vocabulary of native words, and multiple pages with the geographic coordinates of all the remarkable places on the west coast of the Americas. It is presented as a translation from the English done by the eminent translator Prévost. It was considered an authoritative source for two centuries, with Buffon, d'Alembert and Jules Verne all quoting from the book, until it was proved to be a pastiche in 1939.Despite Robert Lade being a fictional character, Prévost … [Click Below for Full Description]

Homan's heirs in Nürnberg published Hase's map of the Empire separately in 1739, but it appears here printed from a new plate and dated 1743. Nicolai Klimii iter subterraneum novam telluris theoriam ac historiam quintae monarchiae adhuc nobis incognitae, exhibens e bibliotheca B. Abelini.Copenhagen and Leipzig, Friedrich Christian Pelt, 1754. 8vo. With engraved frontispiece, engraved title-page, folding map and 6 full-page plates, engraved by Brühl. 19th-century boards, covered with marbled paper. [12], 366 pp. Third, corrected and enlarged edition of this influential utopian novel. Holberg uses the voyage as an instrument of philosophical and moral satire, "to correct popular error and to distinguish the semblance between vice and virtue from the reality", as he later explained in his Memoirs. The work, first published in 1741, went through some 60 editions, it was translated into many languages and ranks among the most popular (utopian) novels of the 18th century. Among novels about fantasy worlds, only Swift's Gulliver's Travels was more popular.Good copy. Paris, Claude Simon for François Didot, 1744. 2 volumes. 12mo. With two folding engraved maps by F. Desbruslins after Jacques-Nicolas Bellin, showing the American Atlantic coast and the route of the journey. Contemporary mottled calf, richly gold-tooled spine.

Paris, Hippolyte-Louis Guerin, 1744. Kirilov, but adds new material. Hase's maps, including the large map of the entire Russian Empire, incorporate new discoveries from the Danish explorer Martin Spanberg's two expeditions to Kamchatka (1738 and 1739) with Bering en Tsjirikov, in search of a sea route to Japan, an expedition supported by Peter the Great himself. Homan's heirs in Nürnberg published Hase's map of the Empire separately in 1739, but it appears here printed from a new plate and dated 1743. LESTOCK, Richard, & Thomas Mathews.
London: various publishers, 1744-5. London: various publishers,, 1744-5. 10 octavo pamphlets, all uncut, most unopened, sewn in original wraps as issued. Housed in a black cloth solander box. 4 folding maps and a folding table to the first item. Wraps a little tattered in some case, one upper wrap detached, and two lacking, but overall very good indeed. First editions. An interesting selection of publications offering insight into this perfect exemplar of the eighteenth-century naval controversy, questions of ship-handling, the interpretation of signals, and personality clashes, all overlaid by matters of patronage. "Lestock's name will always be connected with the battle of Toulon (11 February 1744). By adhering to a restrictive interpretation of the fighting instructions and declining to take any initiatives he contributed to a monumental naval failure" (ODNB). Lestock and his direct superior Admiral Thomas Mathews had had previous contretemps, and in the aftermath of the battle, a virulent pamphlet war flared with Lestock throwing "blame on various captains not in his division and especially on Mathews, whom he charged publicly." Public opinion was against Lestock, but Admiral Byng's "interest" ensured that a parliamentary enquiry, and subsequent court martial were managed in Lestock's favour, "There is every sign that the exoneration of Lestock was arranged. The court, in fact, carried it to an extreme, for in every way conceivable the members found no possible fault in Lestock's conduct. Subsequently, the same court cashiered Mathews Â… The public was not convinced. A … [Click Below for Full Description]
