¶ Fesch col. 1043 - Dorbon n°6446 (exemplaire identique) - Wolfstieg n°29963.

[Regensburg], 1745. Engraving, printed in colours with additional hand colouring. Very good condition. A fine image from one of the first works to use colour printing successfully, and the first published work to include work by the greatest botanical artist of the eighteenth century: Georg Dionysius Ehret. This fine plate comes from Weinmann's magnum opus 'Phytanthoza Iconographia'(Regensburg: 1737-1745), a work which represented a major technical and artistic advance over its precursors, Martyn's 'Historia plantarum rariorum' and the Society of Gardeners' 'Catalogus plantarum'. The work was based on Weinmann's collection of plants and was financed by him. The botanical drawings from which the plates are taken are mainly by Ehret, his first published work, and by N. Asamin, a talented young female artist.Weinmann's work is highly valued for the undoubted artistic standard of the plates, and the individual plates represent an extremely valuable record of the plant kingdom as it was understood and classified in the period just preceding the introduction of Linnaeus' revolutionary system of classification.Cf.         Baltics, Estonia, Lithuania - Joseph-Nicolas De l?Isle, 1745.

MAP OF BALTICS FROM THE ATLAS RUSSICUS?DVCATVVM ESTONIA et LIVONIAE, TABVLA cumcursu Fluvii Dwiniae?, copper engraving published in St.Petersburg in 1745 by Joseph-Nicolas De l?Isle. Original hand colouring. Size: approx. 50 x 58 cm. From the Atlas Russicus, the first complete printed atlas of Russia.Joseph-NicolasDe l?Isle, younger brother of Guillaume De l?Isle, was invited by Peter the Great to survey the vast empire of Imperial Russia. The enlightened Tzar also invited De l?Isle to found a school of Astronomy in St. Petersburg, and although Peter the Great died a year before De l?Isle arrived in St. Petersburg in 1726, he was successful in achieving both of his Imperial commissions. Together with his partner Ivan Kirilov they founded the school of Astronomy and began the immense task of surveying the Russian Empire. Eventually the two men parted company and Kirilov decided to publish his own incomplete atlas of Russia in 1734, eleven years before De l?Isle?s French team finished its more comprehensive work.On his return to Paris in 1747, De l?Isle was able to construct his own observatory in the palace of Cluny, the same observatory later made famous by French astronomer Charles Messier.Price: ?650,-.

World map - Guillaume De L'Isle (Covens & Mortier), 1745.

?Mappe-Monde Dress? sur les Observations de Mrs. De L'Academie Royale des Sciences et quelques autres et sur les memoires les plus recens Par M. De L'Isle.? Copper engraving published by Covens & Mortier in Amsterdam 1745. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 50,8 x 63,5 cm.Guillaume De L?Isle?s world map was originally published in 1700 and then revised and republished throughout the 18th century by De L?Isle and by subsequent map publishers. Dutch publishers Covens & Mortier?s first version of De L?Isle?s map was produced in 1720 adding the seascape with ships on the horizon at the bottom decorated with a second cartouche in the shape of a sea monster with a mermaid, merman and dolphins. They issued a later edition of that map (shown here) in about 1745 with the additional subtitle ?Nouvellement corrig?e apres les dernieres Decouvertes faites par l?Academie de Petersbough.?The map consists of two central hemispheres, eastern and western, surrounded by four smaller polar projections. The right hand projections focus on the Northern Hemisphere while the left hand projections depict the Southern. At top center there is an elaborate decorative cartouche with various allegorical elements depicting the four great continents in female form, from top left: America, Europa, Africa, and Asia. The routes of a number of the most famous explorers of the major oceans of the world are shown from 1542 to approximately 1730, ending with the Russian voyages of Chirikov and Bering. Some of the more noteworthy features of the map includes the Russian explorations along the Northwestern coast of America, Aleutian islands shown in a semi-mythical configuration and attached to a highly conjectural Alaska; Edmund Halley?s sighting of Antarctic ice; Bouvet?s large Cap de la Circoncision; A depiction of the tracks of Fran?ois Pelsaert?s route from Australia to Java; Carpentaria attached to New Guinea; Abel Tasman?s route, along with a depiction of Tasmania, distinctly separate from Australia. The map also retains one of the more curious peninsula depictions of California.Price: ?2.250,-.

DSB 2, 286. ***** First edition. It is the first work of one of the fathers of modern biology. He demonstrated the existence of parthenogenesis in the plant louses. Its experiments, rigorously undertaken, are thoroughly described here: For " we must defy ourselves of what the reasoning indicates & to consult the experiment as far as we can it. " Well before Claude bernard, Bonnet attributed a preponderant role in scientific research to the "art of observing". The second part is devoted to its " Observations on some species of fresh water worms which crossed per pieces, become complete animals as many. " 2 volumes in-12. Collation : (4), XXXII, 228 pp., un tableau et 4 planches h.-t. / (12), 232 pp., un tableau et 4 planches h.-t. Veau marbré, dos à nerfs orné, tranches rouges. (Reliure de l'époque.).

        Daphnis et Chloe

1745. LONGUS. Les Amours Pastorales de Daphnis et Chloé. [Paris]: no publisher, 1745. Small octavo, contemporary full speckled polished calf, elaborately gilt-decorated spine, red morocco spine label, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $3200.Second edition of this delightfully illustrated French translation of Longus’ classic, the first pastoral prose romance, with engraved title page and 29 fine copper-engravings, 13 double-page, after original drawings by Philippe duc d’Orléans, Regent during the minority of Louis XV. A very handsome copy in contemporary French calf-gilt binding.“The reputation of this little book derives primarily from the story of how it came into being. In 1714 Prince Philippe d’Orléans made a series of drawings for the story of Daphnis and Chloe under the tutelage of Antoine Coypel, the father of Charles-Antoine Coypel. At the beginning of his Regency the drawings were engraved by Benoît Audran and published in [the 1718] edition of Longus’ pastoral novel… The prestige conferred by the participation of Philippe d’Orléans made Daphnis et Chloé a fixture in the collections of French bibliophiles (it came to be known as ‘the Regent’s book’), and it is often found in elaborate bindings” (Ray). Written by Longus in the second or third century A.D., Daphnis and Chloe is considered the first pastoral prose romance; the translation into French is by Jacques Amyot, with notes by A. Lancelot. The very scarce 1718 first edition is reputed to have consisted of only 250 copies. Two editions were issued in 1745, with the same illustrations as the 1718 edition—though re-engraved—differing slightly in the setting of text and the order of the engraved headpieces (no priority established). With the “Les petits pieds” plate by the Comte de Caylus bound in near the end of the book, only “sometimes added” to copies, “better known than any of the original illustrations,” perhaps due to its “mildly suggestive” content. Engraved title page dated 1718, the year of the first edition. Cohen-de Ricci 652. Ray, The Art of the French Illustrated Book 2B. A fine, wide-margined copy of “The Regent’s Book,” desirable in lovely contemporary French calf-gilt.
