A Collection of Voyages and Travels, Consisting of Authentic Writers in our own Tongue, which have not before been collected in English, or have only been abridged in other Collections. And continued with Others of Note, that have published Histories, Voyages, Travels, Journals or Discoveries in other Nations and Languages, relating to Any Part of the Continent of Asia, Africa, America, Europe, or the Islands thereof, from the earliest Account to the present Time. Digested According to the Parts of the World, to which they particularly relate. And with great Variety of Cuts, Prospects, Ruins, Maps, and Charts. Complied from the curious and valuable Library of the late Earl of Oxford.

Thomas Osborne, London 1745 - Two volumes, folio, with 37 maps and 16 plates (many folding), and a letterpress folding table; a handsome set in the original panelled calf, decorated in gilt, sympathetically rebacked by Aquarius. A fine set, with excellent early provenance, of one of the most handsome voyage compendiums of the eighteenth century. These two volumes are known as the 'Harleian' or 'Oxford' voyages', being compiled in some part from the unpublished manuscripts in the collection of the Earl of Oxford. Although separately published by Thomas Osborne at a later date, they are generally considered the logical supplement to the travel anthology first published in 1704 by John and Awnsham Churchill. Since they publish material not included in the first six volumes of Churchill's anthology (including Galvano, Drake, Le Maire, de Mont and numerous others), they form a natural complement to the earlier collection. Osborne, or an associate, has contributed a disarmingly eloquent introductory discourse on travel, foreign government and the like, filled with choice aphorisms such as "in your travel you shall have great help to attain knowledge, which is not only the most excellent thing in man, but the very excellency of man".The first volume principally deals with the Near and Middle East, while the second volume covers North America, India, East Asia and the East Indies and Africa. The Chinese content is substantial and includes Baudier's History of the Court of the King of China and Escalante's Account of the Empire of China. The well printed plates are derived from a range of sources, while the maps are principally after the work of Dutch cartographer Herman Moll. The frontispiece to the second volume is a magnificent folding map titled "A Chart of the East Indies", while Moll's famous map of the trade winds (originally printed for Knapton's voyages of Dampier) here re-appears as a considerably enlarged folding chart measuring 200 x 540 mm.A printer's error makes a jump in pagination between pp. 262-410 in the first volume. Although this gap is not noted in the bibliographies listed, comparison with two copies in American university libraries shows that this mis-pagination is the norm. Provenance: Thomas Dampier, Bishop of Rochester (veteran bibliophile and friend of Thomas Dibdin; no relation of the buccaneer; his library was reputed to be one of the finest in England), with Dampier's armorial bookplates; presumably William Cavendish (who bought Dampier's library en-bloc after his death for the then enormous sum of £10,000); Rodney Davidson, with bookplates. A little foxing of the preliminaries, fore-edge margin of the frontispiece to the first volume thumbed and a little chipped (now well laid down); yet an excellent set overall.         Carte Des Antilles Francoises Et Des Isles Voisines; Incredible map of the Lesser Antilles (Grenada upside down)

Amsterdam: Covens & Mortier. unbound. Map. Uncolored engraving. Sheet measures 24.5" x 20.75" This wonderful map of the Lesser Antilles in the West Indies dates to circa 1745. Based on the earlier map by Delisle, the map covers from Guadeloupe to Grenada and includes the islands of Guadeloupe, Dominica, Martinique, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and Barbados. Incredibly detailed, several towns and rivers are identified, as are some coastal features. Curiously, Grenada is depicted upside down and situated more to the west and north than its actual location. This can be attributed to the manusctipt map by Petit, which was the original source for the Delisle map. Petit might have shifted the islands simply to fit them all on the same sheet. The position of Grenada would eventually be corrected by Buache in the 1760 resissue. The map is in good condition with minor wear and toning along the original centerfold. Minor offsetting and foxing. The Amsterdam publishing firm of Covens and Mortier (1665-c. 1862) was established by Cornelius Mortier and Jean Covens. Together, the two republished the works of great 17th and early 18th century Dutch and French cartographers such as De L'Isle, Allard, Jansson, De Wit, and Ottens. The firm quickly grew into one of the largest and most prolific Dutch publishing outfits of the 18th century and enjoyed a long and prolific life under a variety of names.Guillaume Delisle (1675-1726) was a legendary French cartographer known for introducing a new standard of accuracy into 17th-century mapmaking. He was one of the cartographers who propelled the French school of map-making away from Dutch dominance. The French school emphasized science and accuracy over ornament. His family took over the business and kept publishing maps well into the late 18th century. He used astronomical observations to determine locations and draw more precise coastlines. He continually updated his maps and dispelled prevailing geographical inaccuracies throughout his life.

Incisione in rame, coloritura coeva, in buone condizioni. Very unusual elongated map of the East coast of Canada. A beautiful map of Northeastern Canada, including Nova Scotia, Labrador and Newfoundland. This is the second state of the map originally drawn by Seutter and engraved by Lotter, with Lotter's imprint. The map's vertical format elongates the geography and distorts Newfoundland. The St. Lawrence River runs nearly north-south. It is very detailed, especially along the coastlines and rivers. Many place names, both European and Indian. At bottom right is a scene with several sailing ships. At top left is a huge decorative title cartouche featuring allegorical figures, Indian chiefs, explorers, mapmakers, a fleet of ships, fishermen and wildlife. Copperplate, original colour, in good condition. Dimensioni 505 580mm

Cereus quadrangularis [Quadrangular Cactus]; Cereus quinque angularis [Five-angled Cactus]

[Regensburg] 1745 - Engraving, printed in colours with additional hand colouring. Very good condition. A fine image from one of the first works to use colour printing successfully, and the first published work to include work by the greatest botanical artist of the eighteenth century: Georg Dionysius Ehret. This fine plate comes from Weinmann's magnum opus 'Phytanthoza Iconographia' (Regensburg: 1737-1745), a work which represented a major technical and artistic advance over its precursors, Martyn's 'Historia plantarum rariorum' and the Society of Gardeners' 'Catalogus plantarum'. The work was based on Weinmann's collection of plants and was financed by him. The botanical drawings from which the plates are taken are mainly by Ehret, his first published work, and by N. Asamin, a talented young female artist. Weinmann's work is highly valued for the undoubted artistic standard of the plates, and the individual plates represent an extremely valuable record of the plant kingdom as it was understood and classified in the period just preceding the introduction of Linnaeus' revolutionary system of classification.

¶ Fesch col. 1043 - Dorbon n°6446 (exemplaire identique) - Wolfstieg n°29963.

Lugduni Batavorum, Leiden 1745 - xxiv, 325 pp. + [45, index], [2], [73], - 259 pp. + [2, index], 8 engraved plates, title printed in red & black, contemporary slightly stained vellum, spine title ink. Copy in very good condition. Alpini (1553-1617) was an Italian physician and botanist. This work was the first important work on the history of Egyptian medicine and this is a later edition of Garrisson & Morton 6468, Norman 39 & Osler 1706 (all citing one first edition 1591); Heirs 384 (1646 ed.). Jacobus Bontius or Jacques de Bondt (1592-1631) was a Dutch doctor and botanist. He travelled to Persia and Indonesia to study the botany of the area. He died on the island of Java, and he was the first to study cholera on the island of Batavia in 1689 before it was known in Europe. His botanic and medical works were published after his death by Dr. Pison. (For more information about him see Garrisson & Morton 2263 & 3736). His work: "'was probably the first to regard tropical medicine as an independent branch of medical science. He spent the last four years of his life in the Dutch East Indies, and his book incorporates the experience he gained there. It is the first Dutch work on tropical medicine and includes the first modern descriptions of beri-beri and cholera" (GM 2263, citing first edition, 1642); Heirs 463 (1642 edition). Prosperi Alpini spent three years in Egypt studying botany and hygiene as a companion to the Venetian Consul Giorgio Emo in 1581. He spent there nearly four years. This work is considered "One of the earliest European studies of non western medicine. Alpini’s work dealt primarily with contemporary (i.e. Arabic) practices observed during his sojourn in Egypt. These included moxibustion- the production of counter-irritation by placing burning or heated material on the skin - which Alpini introduced into European medicine . Alpini also mentioned coffee for the first time in this work" ( Norman) Size: Small 4to. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

MAP OF BALTICS FROM THE ATLAS RUSSICUS?DVCATVVM ESTONIA et LIVONIAE, TABVLA cumcursu Fluvii Dwiniae?, copper engraving published in St.Petersburg in 1745 by Joseph-Nicolas De l?Isle. Original hand colouring. Size: approx. 50 x 58 cm. From the Atlas Russicus, the first complete printed atlas of Russia.Joseph-NicolasDe l?Isle, younger brother of Guillaume De l?Isle, was invited by Peter the Great to survey the vast empire of Imperial Russia. The enlightened Tzar also invited De l?Isle to found a school of Astronomy in St. Petersburg, and although Peter the Great died a year before De l?Isle arrived in St. Petersburg in 1726, he was successful in achieving both of his Imperial commissions. Together with his partner Ivan Kirilov they founded the school of Astronomy and began the immense task of surveying the Russian Empire. Eventually the two men parted company and Kirilov decided to publish his own incomplete atlas of Russia in 1734, eleven years before De l?Isle?s French team finished its more comprehensive work.On his return to Paris in 1747, De l?Isle was able to construct his own observatory in the palace of Cluny, the same observatory later made famous by French astronomer Charles Messier.Price: ?650,-.

At top center there is an elaborate decorative cartouche with various allegorical elements depicting the four great continents in female form, from top left: America, Europa, Africa, and Asia. The routes of a number of the most famous explorers of the major oceans of the world are shown from 1542 to approximately 1730, ending with the Russian voyages of Chirikov and Bering. Some of the more noteworthy features of the map includes the Russian explorations along the Northwestern coast of America, Aleutian islands shown in a semi-mythical configuration and attached to a highly conjectural Alaska; Edmund Halley?s sighting of Antarctic ice; Bouvet?s large Cap de la Circoncision; A depiction of the tracks of Fran?ois Pelsaert?s route from Australia to Java; Carpentaria attached to New Guinea; Abel Tasman?s route, along with a depiction of Tasmania, distinctly separate from Australia. The map also retains one of the more curious peninsula depictions of California.Price: ?2.250,-.
