(Barbier, III, 194 – Cioranescu, 59724 – Brunet, II, 215 – Hauser, pp. 104-105). NICE COPY. PICTURES AND MORE DETAILS ON REQUEST. [Attributes: First Edition]

The Hague: F. H. Scheurleer, 1743 - 4 volumes, twelvemo (155 x 95 mm). Contemporary mottled calf, flat spines ruled gilt, red and green labels, sprinkled edges. A few small single wormholes to the spines, contents unaffected. A highly attractive set. Title-pages printed in red and black, with engraved vignettes. First edition of one of the rarest texts in economics: the detailed account of the operation of the Visa, which was brought into operation after the downfall of John Law to investigate the profiteers of the Mississippi bubble, to improve the financial position of the state and to penalize the financier class. The Visa was similar to the Chambre de Justice. This is the first book to print the name of Cantillon and to give details of his financial activities in the Mississippi bubble and his dealings with John Law. The Visa was established by decree on 26 January 1721, and Pâris Duverney was entrusted with its execution. The aim of the Visa was to make an inventory of the property of all those, who either directly or indirectly, had shared in the profits of the Système, and to tax them retrospectively. "The decree of 26th January 1721 ordered that all the contracts for income from the state – both perpetual and life annuities – the shares of the India Company, all the certificates of bank accounts, accounts of deposits, all the bonds, contracts for annuities, as well as the notes of the royal bank, as such all the proofs of personal property created by the Système, should within two months, a time which might be extended to the 30th June, be presented before a commission to be appointed by the king. The accounts which were rendered from the 1st to the 15th of July were, as a commencement, to be reduced by a third; those which were rendered from the 16th to the 31st of July by two-thirds. If not presented before the last date mentioned they lost all value To crown the work of Pâris Duverney, and to reach those who had hitherto been able to escape, the council of state, on 15th September 1722, issued a decree enforcing an additional poll-tax, namely the levy of a fine on all immovable property belonging to the hommes nouveaux, which produced 187,893,661 livres" (Palgrave III, 630–1). The last section shows this special "wealth tax" on the property of those who had gained the most in the system, the hommes nouveaux. Cantillon is listed among them (II, 170) and, according to the figures given, only twenty-two people had made more money than him. His capital gains were estimated at 20 million livres, and the tax levied 2.4 million. Cantillon had left France fearing the results of the Visa and the tax payments it would entail, and presumably had his agents working to have his name omitted from it. This he did not achieve, but he was listed as "inconnu", which was clearly untrue, since his bank was still in business (being only gradually wound down), and was listed in the Almanach royal of that year (see Antoin E. Murphy, Richard Cantillon: Entrepreneur and Economist, p. 196). Volumes III and IV are two additional – particularly rare – parts containing the relevant decrets and arrêts, beginning with the Chambre de Justice of 1716 and leading up to 1722. Marmont du Hautchamp (c.1682–c.1760), born in Orléans, was fermier des domaines of Flanders. His other works are an Histoire du Système des Finances . pendant les années 1719 & 1720 (The Hague, 1739), and three novels, Rhétima (1723), Mizivida (1738), and Rispia (1754). Alden 743/149; Einaudi 3729; Goldsmiths' 7992; INED 1554; Kress 4663; Masui, p. 405; Quérard V, 547. [Attributes: First Edition]

maj:ts nådige bref til öfwer-ståthållaren och samtelige landshöfdingarne, dat.

i råd-cammaren then 9 julii 1743, med then uti kongl. maj:ts nådige kungiörelse af then 23 sistledne junii utlåfwade berättelse, angående en del dal-allmoges sammangaddning och upror. Stockholm, Pet. Momma, 1743. 4:o. (84) s. Spridda lätta solkfläckar. Handskriven sidnumrering från tidigare samlingsband. Tagen ur band och med blåstänkta snitt. Ur Ericsbergs bibliotek. Warmholtz 6205.

Fine copy. ---- <br><br> PMM 195; Poggendorf I, 28; Wellcome II, p. 28; Norman 31. --- FIRST EDITION OF D&#39;ALEMBERT&#39;S IMPORTANT CONTRIBUTION TO THE FORMALISING OF NEWTON&#39;S NEW SCIENCE OF MECHANICS. The Traite de dynamique, one of d&#39;Alembert&#39;s most famous scientific works, demonstrates d&#39;Alembert clearly recognized that a scientific revolution had occured and sets out to formalize the new science of mechanics - an accomplishment often mis-attributed to Newton. The first part of the treatise comprises d&#39;Alembert&#39;s own three laws of motion: inertia, the parallelogram of motion, and equilibrium. The second part contains the first statement of what has come to be known as "d&#39;Alembert&#39;s Principle:" which states that the internal forces of inertia must be equal and opposite to the forces that produce the acceleration - a theory which is applied to many mechanical and technical problems, in particular to the theory of the motion of fluids. &#39;The "Treatise on Dynamics" was d&#39;Alembert&#39;s first major book and it is a landmark in the history of mechanics. It reduces the laws of the motion of bodies to a law of equilibrium" (PMM)..

Nuremberg, 1743. Copper engraving, 51 x 60 cms, original hand-colour, blank verso; town plan of Prague with insets showing sections through the fortifications and further illustrating the disposition of the besieging forces. Prague was captured by a mixed force of French, Bavarians and Saxons on behalf of Charles, the elector of Bavaria, during the Austrian war of Succession. In 1743, the year in which our map was published, Prague was re-taken by the armies of the empress Maria Theresa, and despite two sieges by the Prussian armies of Frederick the Great in 1744 and 1757 (the first briefly successful), Prague remained under Austrian control until the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire during the First World War.

        The South Prospect of Leicester

London., 1743. Size: 403 x 830 mm. Copperplate engraving with later hand colour. Good condition. From 1726 to 1742, Samuel Buck (1696&#150;1779) and his brother Nathaniel published an ambitious series of collection of perspective views ("antiquities") in the counties of England and Wales. From 1728 they worked on a parallel project, producing long prospects of all the cities, sea-ports and county towns, usually marketing their town prospects in sets of six. Though the Buck brothers were not the only ones producing views of antiquities and town prospects in the eighteenth century they were much the most prolific. Collectively their engravings provide us with an indispensable record of what English and Welsh towns looked like before the industrial revolution.

        The Geography of England

London: R.Dodsley, 1743. Hardcover - Full Brown Leather. "Done in the Manner of Gordon&#39;s Geographical grammar, each county being considered under the following heads.... To each county is prefix&#39;d a compleat mapp from the latest and best observations, shewing the chief towns, parks, rivers and roads..." Little is known of the life and career of John Cowley, although he is described variously in reference works as engineer, geographer, factor to the Duke Of Argyll, and achieved the status of &#39;Geographer to His Majesty&#39; (i.e geographer Royal). The little that is known of him derives from his maps and books published in the 1730 -40&#39;s. He produced several maps of Scotland and the Argyll estates, and also collaborated with Robert Dodsley, a notable, London Bookseller, to publish this account of &#39;The Geography of England&#39;. Originally, 6 of the Maps were published in Dodsley&#39;s Periodical in 1740-41, &#39;the publick register; or, weekly magazine, but this enterprise soon failed, partly because of the imposition of stamp duty on newspapers, which required a paper which carried news to be stamped {taxed}. Dodsley had probably already commissioned the map engravings and topographic accounts, and decided to issue them as a separate publication. It was actually published in 1743 (Nov), although the title page states 1744. His Maps are based on the Robert Morden maps from Gordon&#39;s work, with some additional information. Although two copies of &#39;The Geography of England&#39; are known to be held in Legal deposit Libraries, both are incomplete. Such attractive small maps are in great demand to be sold individually by dealers who &#39;break&#39; a volume. I have seen individual maps selling for anything between £40 - £85 each. The condition of these are very good, with only a few with some flattened edge creasing. The entire Group of Maps include one for each County and 2 Large folding Maps to front and rear of book. The corner of text page 139 is missing, but text unaffected. A very decent clean copy, some marking to occasional pages. This copy has been rebound in a tasteful brown leather, with 5 raised bands, gilt medallions, compartment borders and title to base of spine. With new smart pastedown and endpapers in keeping with a period feel. A very scarce work and in excellent all round order pp: 271; 54 maps in total. . First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good +. Illus. by 54 Maps. 8vo.

The doctrine of fluxions : not only explaining the elements thereof, but also its application and use in the several parts of mathematics and natural philosophy

      J. Bettenham: and sold by W. Innys, 1743-01-01. 2nd edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 1st ed. Fine modern 3/4 leather binding, marbled boards. Fine binding and cover. New end pages. xvi, 300, [4] p., 10 folding plates. Collated. Clean, unmarked pages. Includes errata. Honeyman sale. Emerson&#39;s first book. Emerson was an important supporter of Newtonian mathematics. From the preface: "To say any thing in praise of the Method of Fluxions, or of its dignity and rank among the mathematical sciences, would be as needless as to describe the excellency of bright sunshine above the twinkling light of stars; since any one who is acquainted with the sciences will allow it to be a method of calculation incomparably superior to all other methods that ever were known or found out; and beyond which nothing further is to be hoped or expected. It lens its aid and assistance to all the other mathematical sciences, and that in their greatest wants and distresses: It opens and discovers to us the secrets and recesses of Nature, which have always before been locked up in obscurity and darkness. To this all the noble and valuable discoveries of the last and present age are entirely owing: And by this method Sir Isaac Newton, the worthy inventor, determined and settled the system of the whole visible World." <br><br> A fun aside. Emerson turned down FRS, stating: "It is a damned hard thing that a man should burn so many farthing candles as I have done, and then have to pay so much a year for the honour of F.R.S. after his name. When a man becomes eminent, he has to pay quarterly for it. This is the way ingenuity is rewarded in England. Damn them and their F.R.S. too.
