[2], [40], 261, [3] p. Engraved titlepage, initials head and tail pieces. Engraving, 2 folding plans, 1 plate. Contemporary vellum. This remarkable wide-ranging book discusses medicine, public health, arts, politics, commerce and religion in the Philippines. Retana describes it as Â'Unico en su géneroÂ'.Maldonado de Puga, a member of the Order of San Juan Hospitalier founded in 1572 reports on the introduction and practice of Western medicine in the Philippines, the foundation of hospitals and of the intimate relationship between medicine and the Church in the Spanish colony. Only 8 items related to medicine in Philippines, most of them official regulations, had been published before the appearance of this pioneering work (see Francisco Guerra, Bibliografía médica americana y filipina. Periodo formative. Madrid 1999, vol II.). Since their arrival in Manila in 1611 from New Spain the Order of San Juan Hospitalier managed and founded hospitals, among them the Royal Hospital of Manila, the hospital in Cavite and hospitals elsewhere in the Philippines. They were also put in charge of the Hospital of the Santa Misericordia in Manila which was open to the poor and also to slaves. Many patients who went to this hospital were in a terminal state. The Order of San Juan also founded a convent and a Church in Manila. By 1727 the church was in a parlous state and a new one built to replace it was inaugurated in 1732. The two large engraved folding plates by the Spanish engraver Joseph Andrade represent the exterior and the rich baroque Philippine interior of the new church. The plates and the detailed description of the churchÂ's architecture, chapels, decorations, paintings and sculptures are today of great historical interest, being the only surviving record of these buildings which were destroyed in the famous 1863 earthquake. The book also deals with the various religious celebrations, the music that was played, the miracles attributed to various images performed on Filipinos and slaves. There is a section listing the persons of note who were buried in the church and the people who supported the order financially. The description of the lavish festivities held to celebrate the opening of the church which lasted for several days allows the book to lay claim to being one of the earliest festival books of the Philippines. The book highlights the role of the Regidor of Manila, Jose Antonio Nuño de Villavicencio as an active patron of the hospitals of San Juan de Dios. It describes his replacement of Chinese weights and measures with Spanish ones in the commerce of Manila. Maldonado de Puga Â'describes the system of weighing in use by the Sangley traders in the islands, and the substitution therefor (1727) of the Castilian steel- yard and standards of weight; he states that he is the first to explain the Chinese system, and we know of no other writer who has done soÂ' The Philippine Islands 1493-1898, Edited and annotated by Emma Helen Blair and James Alexander Robertson (Cleveland, 1907), vol 47, p. 16 The book usefully reproduces a great number of official documents that illustrate the relationship between the civilian and religious authorities in the Philippines in the XVIIth and XVIIIth century and the hospitalier order of San Juan de Dios. # WorldCat:: 3 copies in US libraries (Newberry, Cornell, JCB. * Retana 269; Palau 147786; Páez.         PARADISE REGAIN'D. A POEM, IN FOUR BOOKS. TO WHICH IS ADDED SAMSON AGONISTES; AND POEMS UPON SEVERAL OCCASIONS, WITH A TRACTATE OF EDUCATION... The Eighth Edition, corrected

London: Printed for J. and R. Tonson int he Strand, 1742. [6],504pp. plus engraved frontispiece. Title page printed in red and black. Contemporary calf, spine gilt with raised bands, red morocco label. Covers detached, spine abraded, else very good. In a red morocco box. Provenance: Reuben Skelton (armorial bookplate); Thomas Jefferson (with his initials on pages 113 and 273); Martha Randolph (inscription); Virginia Jefferson Randolph (signature); Mary Jefferson Randolph (signature); Harold Jefferson Coolidge (bookplate). By the end of the 18th century Thomas Jefferson held the largest private library in America. In 1783, his library at Monticello included 2,640 volumes. Over the next thirty years, the collection swelled to over 6,000. In 1815, Jefferson's library was sold en bloc to the Library of Congress to replace their collection lost during the War of 1812 when the British burned the Capitol. The bulk of that collection was destroyed, again by fire, on Christmas eve 1851. Jefferson would build another library between 1815 and his death in 1826, which was dispersed at auction in 1829 by Nathaniel Poor. The provenance of the present volume pre-dates both of those sales, having originally been owned by Reuben Skelton of Virginia, the first husband of Martha Jefferson's stepmother, Elizabeth Lomax Skelton. Elizabeth Skelton was the third wife of Martha's father, John Wayles, and this volume was evidently inherited by her with her husband's estate. Elizabeth passed away shortly after her marriage to Martha's father, and this volume would have subsequently passed to Martha upon her father's death in 1773. Alternatively, given the interrelated marriages of the period, the volume could also have been inherited from Reuben Skelton by his brother, Bathurst Skelton, who would become Martha's first husband in 1766, until his death in 1768. Either way, the volume entered into Thomas Jefferson's library at Monticello in the 1770s. In his characteristic fashion, Thomas Jefferson has inscribed his initials on signature marks I1 and T1. The front pastedown furthermore bears the signature of his daughter Martha Randolph and her daughters Virginia and Mary. Further indications of provenance show the volume descending among various Randolph and Coolidge relatives into the 20th century. Why this volume was not sold to the Library of Congress in 1815 remains a mystery, but was perhaps in Jefferson's daughter's possession given her inscription. Among the surviving volumes from Jefferson's first library at the Library of Congress are other volumes with provenance to Reuben Skelton. Among the favorite and influential authors among the Founding Fathers, John Milton's republican political philosophy and radical thoughts on human liberty resonated with Thomas Jefferson. Indeed, even at a young age, Jefferson's commonplace book quotes Milton more than any other English poet. Jefferson's statute of Virginia for religious freedom, among his most important contributions, borrowed heavily from Milton's ideas on the separation of church and state. A quarto Baskerville edition of PARADISE REGAIN'D, as well as octavo Baskerville editions of both Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, were among the books sold to the Library of Congress in 1815, though were destroyed in the subsequent fire (see Sowerby 4287 and 4288). The present volume not listed in Sowerby. ESTC T134211.

Signed legal document to a military widow

Dover, NH, 1742. unbound. near fine. A rare memento from the War of Jenkins' Ear -- the first time that a Regiment of Colonial-American troops was raised and made part of the Regular British Army -- and sent to fight outside North America. Exceptional legal document signed "B. Wentworth," 1 page, 6.5 x 7.5 inches, written completely in the hand of James Jeffrey, clerk, Dover, New Hampshire, December 2, 1742, addressing the complaint of a widow whose husband was killed in military Service of the Crown, in full: "Whereas the Widow of Thomas Pinkham late of Dover in New Hampshire, complains: That her late husband did enlist himself in His Majesties Service for the late Cuba Expedition. And several of his members of his house say there was allowed him the said Thomas Pinkham the sum of two pounds - fourteen shillings for his subsistence money in that Service: which was never paid him per her. Wherefore Voted, that the said Widow be paid out of the money in the Treasury for payment of contingencies - the said sum of two pounds - fourteen shillings, old tenor in full of all Demands." Note: The War of Jenkins' Ear was a conflict between Britain and Spain that lasted from 1739 to 1748, with major operations largely ending by 1742. On August 4, 1742, Admiral Edward Vernon and Major General Thomas Wentworth landed troops at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in what was originally perceived as an easy victory over the Spaniards. Instead the British accomplished nothing but the loss of over 3,400 soldiers killed, wounded, or missing, having succumbed to disease, too weak to repel the constant attacks by Spanish guerrillas. On December 9 they re-embarked and sailed to Port Royal. Near fine condition. Le Cardinal de Polignac: A Vendre, En total ou par parties, dans les temps qui seront indiqués

      - 40 pp. 8vo, late 19th-century calf-backed marbled boards, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece. Paris: J.B. Coignard, 1742. An extremely rare catalogue of "one of the most important and renowned collections of antiquities assembled in the 18th century."-Astrid Dostert, "La description historique des antiques du cardinal de Polignac par Moreau de Mautour?", Journal des savants, 2001, Vol. I, pp. 93-152-(an extremely informative article). Cardinal Polignac (1661-1742), an influential diplomat and art connoisseur, played an important role in the negotiation of the Treaty of Utrecht as well as maintaining close ties between France and the Vatican. Pope Alexander VIII is believed to have said to him: "I do not know how you do it; you seem to always be on my side, and I always end up on yours."-N.B.G. Polignac spent a considerable amount of time in Rome and organized archaeological digs from which he built the collection described herein. He read both Latin and Greek and developed not only a comprehensive knowledge of ancient civilization but also a refined eye for antiquities. So esteemed was this collection that following Polignac's death, Frederick the Great purchased the bulk of the collection to fill his houses at Charlottenburg and Sanssouci in Potsdam. Many of those objects are now found in the museums of Berlin. A fine copy. ? N.B.G., Vol. 40, cols. 607-10. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

A MAP OF THE BRITISH EMPIRE IN AMERICA WITH THE FRENCH, SPANISH AND THE DUTCH SETTLEMENTS ADJACENT THERETO.

Amsterdam: Printed for John Covens and Cornelius Mortier, [n.d., ca. 1742]. - Copper-engraved map on four sheets, joined, 46 x 41 inches. In near fine condition, handsomely framed in a gold leaf frame, under rated plexiglass. Henry Popple produced this map under the auspices of the Lord Commissioners of Trade and Plantations to help settle disputes arising from the rival expansions of English, Spanish and French colonies. "France claimed not only Canada, but also territories drained by the Mississippi and its tributaries - in practical terms, an area of half a continent" - Goss, THE MAPPING OF NORTH AMERICA, p.122. The thrust of British mapmaking after 1718 was to establish her presence cartographically on the French. Hence the title "The British Empire in America."Nevertheless, in making the map, Popple used the best available geographical information: Colonel Barnwell's map of the southeast; De L'Isle's "Carte de la Louisiane"; Cadwallader Colden's map of the Iroquois nations, and seems to have come up with a map that did not please imperialistic British viewers as much as it did those who only wanted an accurate depiction. The result is a vast map of North America never before delineated in such detail, and a source of delight and intrigue to this day. Babinksi notes that George Washington owned a copy of the Key map (Popple's abbreviated version) and Benjamin Franklin ordered two copies for the Pennsylvania Assembly in 1746 and another in 1752. The Popple and Mitchell (1755) maps were the most important maps of North America made in the 18th century and were widely known and referred to throughout the formation of the United States. This example is the second state of the edition published by Covens and Mortier in Amsterdam, circa 1742. Covens & Mortier was a highly respected Amsterdam map publishing firm, which, more than any of their colleagues, maintained the high standards established by the Dutch and French cartographers of the previous century. It is differentiated from the first state by the word "Hollandish" being changed to "The Dutch" in the cartouche. The original Popple map is virtually impossible to present as a unified piece (joined, it measures more than eight feet square). The Covens and Mortier version of Popple offers in a more manageable and accessible form all the geographical and political material of the original, including the depiction of Wager's sea battle with the Spanish near Cartagena in 1707. The region in question, the Eastern half of North America and a portion of northern South America, is laid out on four sheets, which joined are 46 x 41 inches. An excellent example of the most important American map of its era. Mark Babinski, HENRY POPPLE'S 1733 MAP (New Jersey, 1998), state 2 of the Covens & Mortier edition. "The integral calculus was published in Johann I's 'Opera omnia', which contains all of his mathematical papers" (Norman). Besondere Beachtung verdient die in Band 4 erstmals veröffentlichte "Hydraulica". Nevertheless, Bernoulli did try to manage without Daniel's formulation of the principle of 'vis viva'" (DSB). - Johann Bernoulli (1667-1748), der jüngere Bruder von Jakob Bernoulli, avancierte nach dem Tode Newtons 1727 zum bedeutendsten Mathematiker in Europa und wurde auch als "Archimedes seiner Zeit" bezeichnet. Im Prioritätsstreit zwischen Leibniz und Newton nahm er Partei für Leibniz, mit dem er in regem Briefwechsel stand. - Papierbedingt stellenweise etwas gebräunt bzw. stockfleckig.         Plutus, the God of Riches. A Comedy. Translated from the Original Greek of Aristophanes: With Large Notes Explanatory and Critical

      T. Waller, London 1742 - First edition. [iv], xv, [i], 112 pp., with half-title. 8vo. First edition this translation of Aristophanes' Plutus by Henry Fielding and William Young. The comedies of Aristophanes served as a model for two of Fielding's most successful plays, Pasquin and The Historical Register. The dedication is to the opposition reformer Lord Talbot, to whom Fielding recommends Aristophanes as one who "exerted that Genius in the Service of his Country." A footnote to Act II, scene 5, references Fielding's distaste towards those who abandoned their opposition to Walpole when he was made Lord Ormond, following his resignation in 1742: "To make use of popular interest, and the character of patriotism, in order to betray one's country, is perhaps the most flagitious of all Crimes" (p. 57).Uncommon on the market, with the last copy sold at auction in 1982 according to ABPC. Cross III, p. 307. Provenance: contemporary marginalia on a few leaves; Bernard Quaritch (pencil collation note on chemise); Louis & Anne Marie Davidson (bookplate) Stabbed-sewn, stitching renewed, with publisher's prospectus slip tipped to half-title, uncut. Corners of half-title, title and final leaf renewed, some light toning and spotting.
