(2) 492pp., relié. - New edition after the original came out in 1687, the in-4, which contained 28 planches.Plein brown calf and marbled iced contemporary. Spine ribbed ornate. Part of title in red morocco. Small missing tail. Good exemplaire.Ce famous journey was undertaken in March 1685 in Brest, where the author was back on June 18th 1686 This is one of the most important relationships in Thailand. Louis XIV, attracted by the riches of the kingdom of Siam there was an extraordinary hurry embassy which Francois Timoleon de Choisy was gone (with Father Guy Tachard who also gave his book on the subject), its role is to convert the king Christianity while the other part of the embassy was to conclude commercial treaties. The embassy returned with gifts, right for missionaries and diplomatic words. The book contains many details about the Embassy reception by the king and his court, on the manners of the court, the rich palaces and houses, but the book is also a sea story, the author taking his daily newspaper since leaving Brest until his return, even if sometimes it notes the time at sea. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.

London: J. Osborn, 1741. First edition. Pp. xvi, 126; ii, 324. 6 woodcuts in text. 8vo., contemporary full calf, with gilt rules round the edges of the boards and each spine panel, rather rubbed and marked , joints starting but a good strong copy but very good and clean internally. London, J. Osborn, 1741 Arabella Atkyns was a pseudonym coined by the author in the preface"Being sitill teized for some Name I will, tho' not my right one, subscribe That of Arabella Atkyns" The preface states that the medical part is taken from her physician brother's common-place book and deales with 'unladylike' maladies. Oxford points out that the cookery part is excellent and well arranged but the medical part is "full of horrors", for instance the treatment for appendicitis is to "apply a live puppy to the naked belly" and then to follow with a cataplasm of rotten apples or of 'sheeps-dung boil's with milk'. The famous eighteenth century cookery writer Hannah Glasse borrowed much from this book for her "Compleat Confectioner' of c.1760. Booklabel of John Marks.

Curiosities in the Tower of London Vol I

London: Thomas Boreman, 1741. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition. Original paper covered boards, spine perished, tear to paper on rear board, sewing and structure largely intact. The very rare first edition of Boreman's Curiosities, detailing the animals in the Tower Zoo. Apparently an unrecorded state - gatherings A-D are in the first edition, F-H are unchanged from first to second edition, but gathering E is in a third state with text not present (in the description of the porcupine) in either the first or second edition (the comparison with the two known copies of the first edition in the Lilly and Bodleian libraries, done for a Sotheby's sales, is described in Miniature Book News #107, Dec., 2000). Like the first edition, it has the woodcut of the panther on page 42 lacking in the second edition. Scattered light foxing, good impressions of the cuts. (1)-xxiv, 25-124 (4)pp, 13 woodcuts. This copy was offered for sale by Sotheby's in 2000 - no other copy of the first edition has appeared before or since. Housed in a custom morocco backed case. Size: 64mo. One volume of the 2-volume set. Quantity Available: 1. Shipped Weight: Under 1 kilo. Category: Children; Inventory No: 045688.

La prusse devint militariste et étendit ses possessions au nord. Leasing Turtle Bay for Use by the Royal Navy, 1741

New York 1741 - Manuscript Document Signed. Fifty-year lease on Turtle Bay from Captain Robert Long to Peter Warren. Signed by Peter Warren (with his wax seal), his father-in-law Stephen Delancey, and two other witnesses. New York, March 2, 1741. 1 p., 13 x 16 in. Docketed on verso, with later notes on payment through 1750 signed by Long. A future hero of the French and Indian War leases Turtle Bay for fifty years of use by the British Navy. From the beginning of European settlement, it offered sailing vessels refuge from the East River's treacherous currents and winter storms. Today, it helps weather different kinds of storms: it was filled in and is the site of the present United Nations complex. Partial Transcript"This Indenture made the Second day of March in the Fifteenth Year of the reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second. and the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred and Forty One Between Robert Long Esquire Captain in his Majestys Royal Navy of the one part and Peter Warren Esquire Captain in the Same Royal Navy of the other part Witnesseth that for and in consideration of the yearly rent and Covenants. All that Messuage, Tenement or Dwelling house together with the Brewhouse, Store House, Powder House, and other Outhouses thereunto belonging Situate lying and being in Turtle Bay near the city of New York.together with the use of the large Copper now set up on the same premises." Historical BackgroundTurtle Bay, on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, was one of the best harbors on the East River. While some historians claim it was named after the turtle-filled creek running through the 40-acre parcel Dutch Director-General Wouter van Twiller granted to two Englishmen, it is more likely a bastardization of Dutch word "deutal" (a bent blade), which referred to the shape of the bay. In the 18th century, it was further developed for use by naval vessels-as place to "careen" (intentionally beach) vessels for below-waterline maintenance, dockside repairs, or to await favorable tides. In 1734, it was acquired by British naval captain Robert Long. Here, in 1741, fellow naval captain Peter Warren leased the property, its outbuildings, and all its resources for 25 per year from Long. Warren would soon become a hero of the French and Indian War. In 1749, he would purchase the property outright. Warren died in 1752, but the property stayed in his family until 1791 (see Stokes, pages VI: 173-4). Manhattan's Warren Street and the Rhode Island town of Warren were both named in his honor.Shipbuilders established a thriving business in Turtle Bay, and by the time Robert Fulton tested his steamboat on the East River in 1808, the wharf area was filling up with breweries, carpentry shops, mills, and small industries. The bay was filled in after the Civil War and is now part of the United Nations headquarters at the foot of 46th and 47th Streets, as well as a number of consulates and luxury residential buildings.ProvenanceSotheby's London, April 9, 1974, lot 646.

Rare first edition, and a very fine copy, of the "first book on orthopedics" (Garrison-Morton). A work "of supreme importance" (Bick).

❧Grolier/Medicine 42; Lilly, Notable Medical Books 113; Norman 55; Heirs of Hippocrates 697; Garrison-Morton 4301.

"Nicholas Andry coined the word 'orthopaedics' in French as orthopédie, derived from the Greek words orthos ('correct', 'straight') and paidion ('child'), when he published Orthopedie (translated as Orthopaedia: or the Art of Correcting and Preventing Deformities in Children) in 1741. Though as the name implies it was initially developed with attention to children, the correction of spinal and bony deformities in all stages of life eventually became the cornerstone of orthopedic practice." (Wikipedia).

Andry's "book was the first monograph on the subject, and the emblematic engraving it contains of a tree with a crooked trunk tied to a straight post has been adopted as a symbol of orthopedics.
"Andry grasped the crucial principles that the muscles in balance are the molders of the body in childhood and that weakness in a muscle, resulting in a muscle imbalance, can result in the onset of a deformity during growth. He therefore recommended that the offending muscle be subjected to a course of exercise, by which deformities could be prevented or cured. His methods were simple but ingenious, based on observation and on the principle that deformities that are due to one form of movement or habit can be undone by a movement or habit of the opposite kind. For example, he observed that a corpulent man or a pregnant woman walks with a straight back; therefore, if a youth stoops, he should be made to carry a burden in front of his body. Andry devised balancing and gymnastic exercises and encouraged childhood games. He also used massage, cold applications, and what we now call orthopedic beds. For established deformities, he resorted to the use of mechanical aids. He also believed that deformities in children were caused by ill-fitting or restrictive clothing and by unnatural postures enforced by badly designed children's furniture. He thus paid great attention to the adoption of proper posture, which he regarded as being of the utmost importance. Later in the eighteenth century, Jean Pierre David was to show the value of rest in the body's own repair system, but Andry demonstrated that exercise as well as rest had an appropriate place in the treatment of physical problems." (Grolier/Medicine).. Two vols, 12mo (163 x 97 mm), bound in two fine contemporary French calf with richly gilt spines, pp. [4] i-cxviij [i.e., cxviij] 345 [3], engraved frontispiece by J. It is notable for its learned commentary by the scholar Jacob Duchat, and for the inclusion of letters and other material related to the life of the master satirist. This lavish enlightenment production contains sixteen plates including three folding studies of Rabelais' family estate of La Déviniere at Indre-et-Loire (namely, a birds-eye view of the estate with its walled vineyard, Rabelais' chamber, and the domestic courtyard). As the title-page boasts, many of the engravings are from the Amsterdam workshop of Bernard Picart (1673-1738), a gifted Huguenot engraver who emigrated to Amsterdam in 1710. Like many printers of the early decades of the eighteenth century, Picart sought refuge in Holland from religious persecution. Today he is best remembered for his role in the monumental enlightenment study of comparative religion Cérémonies et coutumes Religieuses de tous les peuples du Monde. To this edition of Rabelais he contributed a striking portrait frontispiece (as a religious exile Picart may well have found sympathy with the irreverent treatment of the clergy in Rabelais' writings). This is an excellent set in a striking contemporary, probably English, binding.

Attaque de Cartagene depuis la prise des forts jusquau 24 Avril [1741]

      - small quarto, 2 ½ page manuscript account, neatly and boldly inscribed in ink, in very good clean and legible condition. It is written on laid paper manufactured by Benoid Vimal, a French paper maker active in the first half of the 18th century. Contemporary manuscript account, written in French, of the Battle for Cartagena in the War of Jenkin¿s Ear. The account is probably a letter from a French trader active in Colombia at the time. This trader is most likely one François Hercouët. There exists in the archives of a notaire, named Morel, from Saint-Malo an ¿acte d¿engagement¿ dated 29 January 1740 to a ship, the Theresa, chartered by the owner and captain, Hercouët, to go to the Americas. There are further traces in the history of Saint-Malo of François Hercouët. He was at the time a slave owner. Most importantly, the newspaper ¿the Courier¿ of 14 July 1741 alludes to the account offered here, H. recounts the events of Cartagena in very similar terms. It is cited that the information had come to the journal by way of a Captain Barcouët, who was entrusted by H. to send the report on to the Courier. The paper related that Barcouët, commanding the Marie-Anne, had left Santa Marta on 30 April and arrived at Brest 30 June. There was, by way of further note, a ¿Captaine Hercouët¿ who was very active in the slave trade to Saint Domingue in the 1770s. In March 1741 a large scale expedition of British and American colonial troops led by Admiral Edward Vernon (1684-1757) arrived at Cartagena, a city on the northern coast of present day Colombia, in the Caribbean Coast region, with a massive fleet of 186 ships and 23,600 men, including 12,000 infantry. They were opposed by six Spanish ships and fewer than 3,000 men, in an action known as the Battle of Cartagena, part of the War of Jenkin¿s Ear. The siege was broken off due to the start of the tropical rainy season, after weeks of intense fighting in which the British landing party was successfully repelled by the Spanish and native forces led by commander General Blas de Lezo y Olvarrieta, a Basque from the Guipuzcoa province in northern Spain. He died in the aftermath of the battle. Heavy British and Colonial casualties were compounded by diseases such as yellow fever. The victory prolonged Spain¿s control of the Caribbean waters, which helped secure its large Empire until the 19th century. Admiral Vernon¿s unsuccessful expedition to Carthagena was the greatest and most expensive that had ever entered the American seas. There was a large force of American colonials, mainly from New England, recruited for the expedition, and this was the first American Expeditionary Force. George Washington¿s brother, Lawrence Washington was a member of the force, and was so impressed with Admiral Vernon, that he named his Virginia estate and plantation, Mount Vernon, after him. The manuscript, written in French, is here given in our rough English translation: ¿The English have established mortars on the nearest fort of the city and fire bombs into Cartagena without effect. They have sent a ship of 70 guns between those which had sunk and led to the northwest of the city and Fort St. Lazare to barrage the said fort whose cannot reach the vessels. The English made their descent under Notre Dame de La Pouppe at night without being sighted and after came by way of the road from Hyhymany [i.e. Imainie, name of the lower city of Cartagena, which means suburb in the native dialect.] into the city where they found 800 militia men and 400 regulars whom they surprised and put to flight and immediately won the road to Bouquille. By this means they were holding the city blocked by sea and land. After being masters of the path to Bouquille ¿ they established a battery and mortars to bombard the city in breach. But M. le Vice-Roy de Sta fe who had come to the rescue of Cartagena made a lively attack with 3,000 Indians who went by the way of Bouquille. They put the
