1740. Greek large-volume Orthodox book printed in Venice in the 18th century. I am offering Greek Orthodox Church book with a large volume probably printed in Venice in the 18th century. The book is without the front cover, missing the first 16 pages and probably the last few pages. The book begins on page 17 and ends on page 1154. This book is printed on quality European watermark paper. I suppose it was printed in Venice in the 18th century, because then there were several large Greek printers. Giambattista TIEPOLO (Venezia, 1696 - Madrid, 1770)
Acquaforte, 1740 circa, firmata in basso a destra "Tiepolo". Etching, 1740 circa, signed at right "Tiepolo". Plate 15 from the series of 24 "Scherzi di Fantasia". First state, of two, before number 105added at upper right. Good example, printed on contemporary laid paper, trimmed close to platemark, light and scattered foxing, otherwise in very good condition. These etching belongs to the first series of 24 plates of Scherzi . Tiepolo finished the majority of the 24 plates duting 1740s, before his depature for Würzburg in 1753, bust most likely continued working on them until 1757. Giovanni Antonio CANAL detto "Canaletto" (Venezia 1697 - 1768)
Magnifica prova. "Etching, circa 1740, signed at the bottom center. Excellent impression, of the second state of two, with the title written, printed on contemporary laid paper ""three moons"" watermark (Bromberg 11), trimmed to the platemark, small restoration to the upper-right corner, otherwise excellent conditions. The first state of this title is known in a single copy with a manuscript dedication of Canaletto's. It is part of an album containing the Canaletto engravings that belonged to Anton Maria Zanetti, now preserved at the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin. In the same museum is also preserved a brown ink drawing that represents a fantastic composition and which can be regarded as the first idea for this title page. Magnificent example." Giambattista ALBRIZZI (Venezia 1698 - 1777)
Incisione in rame, dipinta a mano. "Map taken from ""Atlante Novissimo"", published by Giambattista Albrizzi, circa 1740. Globe with allegorical representations of the four continents in the corners, surmounted by an armillary sphere. Striking example of Albrizzi's double hemipshere map of the World, one of the most interesting and decorative world maps to appear in a mid-18th Italian Century Atlas. An elegant example of the Italian school of commercial cartography, the art work around the map having been done by important Italian artist Giovanni Battista Piazzetta (ca. 1682-1754), whose influence can be seen in the subsequent work of Zatta and others. The cartographic content of the map, which is drawn from De l'Isle's Mappe Monde (1700), is secondary to the very beautiful, serene female figures in each corner representing the four continents. G. Batta Piaceta is shown as Inventor (left), and Guliano Giampicoli, as engraver (right). The map includes a finley executed armillary sphere, explorer's routes, unknown NW Coast of America, incomplete projections of Australia (still attached to New Guinea) and New Zealand, conjectural Asian Land mass extending toward Alaska and many other cartographic myths and misprojections. Copperplate with fine later hand colour, very good condition."

Georg Matthaus SEUTTER "il Vecchio" (1678 - 1757)

"Striking map of North America, based upon De L'Ise's map. Includes a well delineated Great Lakes and corrected rendering of Baja California. The cartography of the Mississippi River Valley and the Rio Grande are still quite inaccurate. Lots of detail, including many Indian Tribes and early settlements west of the Mississippi River, and a number of settlements located in Florida and along the Gulf Coast. The Channel Islands in California are well delineated and there are many placenames along the California Coast, as far north as Mendocino. The lack of knowledge in the Pacific Northwest and west of the Upper Mississippi is unabashedly left blank, unlike earlier maps. Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1740. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Memoirs of Guay Trouin Pirates BRAZIL French NAVY Louis XIV Illustrated René Du Guay-Trouin was a famous 17th-century French privateer known for his career in the French Navy. He was notable for his sea victories over the English and the Dutch which helped propel his ascension under King Louis XIV, as well as his expedition to capture Rio de Janeiro in 1711. His memoirs of these voyages were eventually published even though he never wished them to be available to the public. This 1740 edition of Trouin's 'Memoirs' was published in Amsterdam by Mortier and features impressive illustrations including a map of Rio de Janeiro and engravings of sea battles.

A superb, striking image, with rich details throughout and a striking cartouche showing an Indian hunt in the New World. Excellent detail in Florida, the Gulf Coast, and the Texas coastline, as well as in the interior of Texas and the South. Giambattista ALBRIZZI (Venezia 1698 - 1777)
"Map taken from ""Atlante Novissimo"", published by Giambattista Albrizzi around 1740. Based on Delisle, the map covers the region from Filadelfia south to the Bahamas, and the coast of the Gulf of Mexico to Tampico. The map extends from the Rio Grande River to the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers and east to include the Chesapeake and Delaware Rivers, and south to Florida and the Bahamas. A superb, striking image, with rich details throughout and a striking cartouche showing and Indian Hunt in the New World. Excellent detail in Florida, the Gulf Coast and the Texas Coastline, as well as in the interior of Texas and the South. The two large Mohawk Villages, illustrated like European Cities, adds an unusual touch. S. Agostino is also shown as a large fortified town as is Charleston and Filadelphia. Many of the cartographic elements here are curiously antiquated having been updated by Delisle in his 1718 map - suggesting that Albrizzi mus … [Click Below for Full Description]

CASTEL (Louis Bertrand)
Paris, Briasson, 1740.
London: for Edward Cave, at St. John's Gate, 1740. 1740 1st ed South Carolina Slavery Indians Gentleman's Magazine Samuel JohnsonThe Gentleman's Magazine was an English periodical which first appeared in 1731. It was published without interrupt for nearly 200 years and was the first of its kind to use the term 'magazine'. It was published by Edward Cave, pseud. Sylvanus Urban. From 1738 to 1746, Edward Cave published in occasional issues of The Gentleman's Magazine semi-fictionalized accounts of contemporary debates in the two Houses of Parliament under the title of "Debates in the Senate of Lilliput. The names of the speakers in the debates, other individuals mentioned, politicians and monarchs present and past, and most other countries and cities of Europe ("Degulia") and America ("Columbia") were thinly disguised under a variety of Swiftian pseudonyms. This was because they were using the characters and culture from Jonathan Swift's book, "Gulliver's Travels". The disguised names, and the pretense that the accounts were really translations of speeches by Lilliputian politicians, were a reaction to an Act of Parliament forbidding the publication of accounts of its debates. Cave employed several notable writers on this series: William Guthrie (June 1738 - November 1740), Samuel Johnson (November 1740 - February 1743), and John Hawkesworth (February 1743 - December 1746).This 1740 publication includes a variety of important and interesting topics including:· Parliament Debates· Essays on Epitaphs· Indians· South Carolina Slave Insurrection· Com … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Early 18th-century scrapbook -] - Scrapbook with about 84 cut-out images from engraved prints by Martin Engelbrecht. France 1740. (c. 1740). [356 x 230 mm] 41 ll. (including 11 blank). Contemporary vellum. ---------- Early example of an 18th-century scrapbook. The album contains a variety of images, including garden scenes, architectural views, mythological figures, trees, flowers, fruits, fantasy landscapes, hunting scenes, animals, costume figures, noblemen and other items. Most of the images have individually been arranged to larger scenes, filling out almost the whole page. Probably all of the clippings come from prints by Martin Engelbrecht in Augsburg. Engelbrecht received several imperial privileges for colored cut-out images between 1719 and 1739. He was the first publisher of prints solely made to be cut out. The cutting out of individual images from printed sheets, with scissors and small sharp knives, became a popular pastime at that time. The maker of the present album, probably a young lady, used a rejected cash-book of 1734 for his clippings. The first three leaves still have a few handwritten notes of cash receipts. ------------------ Scrapbooks are the forerunners of modern children's picture books.
