Autori Bompiani,I, p. 168.

(Kommentar, in: Pott, Briefe, Bd.I, Vorrede, S.V/VI. Siehe auch: Th. Hoeren: Präjakobiner in Deutschland Carl Friedrich Bahrdt) - Etwas bestossen u. berieben Aussengelenke leicht angerissen leicht schief gelesen Vorsatz mit Besitzervermerk von 1944 Schnitt u. einige Blatt etwas fleckig wenige Blatt mit "Eselsohr", sonst gut.

(Hauser).

On the right and left side of the city view an figurative allegorical depiction of the river Gera and agriculture of the area.; - vita of the artist: Matthias Seutter (1678- 1757) Augsburg was the son of a goldsmith in Augsburg. In 1697, Seutter began his studies in Nuremberg and subsequently worked in the publishing house of Jeremias Wolff in Augsburg. In 1710, he established his own publishing house and print shop. The Seutter publishing house produced a great number of maps, atlases, and globes. However, very few original maps were printed there, as Augsburg at that time had no university and no connection to the fields of mathematics or the natural sciences. Seutter therefore copied the work of other cartographers, making his own engravings based on their models. Over 500 maps were produced in his studio. Seutter's most well-known works are the 1725 "Geographical Atlas or an Accurate Depiction of the Whole World" ("Atlas Geographicus oder Accurate Vorstellung der ganzen Welt") with 46 maps, the 1734 "Large Atlas" ("Grosser Atlas") with 131 maps, and the 1744 pocket atlas "Small Atlas" ("Atlas minor") with 64 maps. Matthäus Seutter died in 1757. Seutter's son Albrecht Karl, his son-in-law Conrad Tobias Lotter, and his business partner Johann Michael Probst ran the printing business for five more years.

An enquiry into the melancholy circumstances of Great Britain: more particularly in regard to the oeconomy of private families and persons, gentlemen, clergy, farmers, merchants, tradesmen, mechanicks, &c. With observations on the new methods of living and diversions in both city and country, with some remedies to prevent the ruin of private families; and remarks upon our trade in general, and especially of such commodities as are imported for luxury, or injurious to our manufactures. Also some hints to prevent the growing poverty of these nations.

London: printed for W. Bickerton. n.d. ? 1740 - 8vo., (8) + 47 + (1)pp., including the half-title, recent marbled boards lettered on spine. A very good copy. First and only edition. An interesting 'enquiry' into trade, commerce and economic and social conditions among people in all walks of life. the essayist talks up buying British, comments on the hardship of some 'gentlemen of estates', smugglers 'their wickedness and their encouragers', extravagances in furniture and 'large retinues', the ruin of retailers about London, the 'expences and bad customs of retail traders', 'love of musick descended loo low, and occasions idleness', the danger of pawnbrokers. 'over-balance in trade', and 'His Majesty being a stranger to the poverty of his people'. He considers public and private education, and observes that 'youth intended for trade [are] not so properly educated as the Jew's children', and that if noblemen and citizens children [were] educated together', it would be 'advantageous to neither', and he makes thoughtful observations on the education of girls. 'Our female education at boarding schools teaches a false politeness, where children are too much instructed in visits, fashions, cards and assemblies, that they are strangers to all domestick oeconomy when they are settled in the world: often from thence proceeds discontents in their marriage states. . A good family education would be far more advantageous .'. Generally this is an astute view of mid-18th century domestic life. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Ruggieri, 570.
