Tabula selenographica in qua Lunarium macularum exacta descriptio

Norimberga 1741 - Mappa lunare secondo Johannes Hevelius (sinistra) e Giovanni Battista Riccioli (destra). Striking pair of maps depicting the surface of the moon, based upon the models of Johannes Hevelius and Giovanni Battista Riccioli. The two spheres of the moon provide a comparative analysis of the topographical information and nomenclature of Riccioli and Hevelius. Between the two spheres is a model showing the phases of the moon, with the different lunar phases represented in the four corners of the image. The map is further embellished with cherubs using a telescope and Diana, the lady of the moon. In 1647 Johannes Hevelius, a brewer from Gdansk, published his Selenographia, the first treatise devoted entirely to the moon. The work included for only the second time a single map that showed all the features of the moon equally clearly--a composite view that pictured the Moon in a way it never appeared in reality, but was accurate in its placement of individual features. Hevelius was truly a remarkable man of science, who made his own lenses, constructed his own telescopes, observed the Moon on every clear night for several years, drew his observations, engraved them himself, and had the wealth to publish a sumptuous book at his own expense. In Selenographia , Hevelius presented graphical depictions of every conceivable phase of the Moon, as well as three large plates of the full Moon: the first showing the ways the full Moon actually appeared through the telescope, th second showing the way a maker of terrestrial maps might represent it (using the conventions of geographers), and the third being a composite map of all lunar features illuminated (impossibly) from the same side. It is this last map that was to be used by astronomers during lunar eclipses. Hevelius also suggested a system of nomenclature based on earthly features. Hevelius founded the science of selenography (after Selene, the goddess of the Moon) and showed astronomers how to represent heavenly bodies. All lunar maps since his time have used the convention of single illumination (although while he used morning illumination, modern maps use evening illumination after Van Langren's model). Hevelius also instituted the practice of showing the entire lunar surface visible from the Earth, which, because of librations, is greater than a hemisphere. Hevelius's nomenclature, although used in Protestant countries until the eighteenth century, was replaced by the system published in 1651 by the Jesuit astronomer Giovanni Battista Riccioli, who gave the large naked-eye spots the names of seas (Sea of Tranquillity, Sea of Storm, etc.) and the telescopic spots (now called craters) the names of philosophers and astronomers. It should be pointed out that although Riccioli wrote his Almagestum Novum in which his map appeared to combat the Copernican theory, he was evenhanded in assigning names: Copernicus and Kepler were assigned prominent craters, and even Galileo received his due. Giovanni Battista Riccioli first published his map of the moon in Almagestum nouum, published in Bologna in 1651. The Riccioli moon map is historically of great importance, as it provides the basis for the system of lunar nomenclature still in use. It is more properly referred to as the Riccioli/Grimaldi map, since the Jesuit optician Francesco Grimaldi was apparently responsible for the map itself, while fellow-Jesuit Riccioli invented the names (and wrote the book in which the map appeared). Thus the Sea of Tranquility (Mare Tranquillitatis) traversed by the Apollo astronauts acquired its name here, as Mare Tranquillitatis, as did such prominent lunar craters as Plato, Ptolemaeus, and Tycho. Copperplate with fine original hand colour, with margins, in very good condition. Whitfield, Mapping of the Heavens, pp. 93, 96-97. Tooley, R.V., Maps

The New Testament was first published in 1522 and the complete Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments and Apocrypha, in 1534. Gestochen von Johann Martin BERNIGEROTH (1713-1767) Johann Martin Bernigeroth (* 7. November 1713 in Leipzig; † 22. The project absorbed Luther's later years.[4] Thanks to the then recently invented printing press,[5] the result was widely disseminated and contributed significantly to the development of today's modern High German language.

        Rivierlandschap - Jacob Cats.

Artist: Winter Johann Wilhelm Nuremberg; issued in : Nuremberg; date: 1741 - - technic: Copper print; colorit: colored; condition: Right lower corners replaced, tear; size (in cm): 37 x 27 - description: Portrait of Johannes Babtista Homann.Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

Rare first edition, and a very fine copy, of the "first book on orthopedics" (Garrison-Morton). A work "of supreme importance" (Bick). ?Grolier, One Hundred Books Famous in Medicine 42; Lilly, Notable Medical Books 113; Norman 55; Heirs of Hippocrates 697; Garrison-Morton 4301. "Nicholas Andry coined the word 'orthopaedics' in French as orthopédie, derived from the Greek words orthos ('correct', 'straight') and paidion ('child'), when he published Orthopedie (translated as Orthopaedia: or the Art of Correcting and Preventing Deformities in Children) in 1741. Though as the name implies it was initially developed with attention to children, the correction of spinal and bony deformities in all stages of life eventually became the cornerstone of orthopedic practice." (Wikipedia). Andry's "book was the first monograph on the subject, and the emblematic engraving it contains of a tree with a crooked trunk tied to a straight post has been adopted as a symbol of orthopedics. "Andry grasped the crucial principles that the muscles in balance are the molders of the body in childhood and that weakness in a muscle, resulting in a muscle imbalance, can result in the onset of a deformity during growth. He therefore recommended that the offending muscle be subjected to a course of exercise, by which deformities could be prevented or cured. His methods were simple but ingenious, based on observation and on the principle that deformities that are due to one form of movement or habit can be undone by a movement or habit of the opposite kind. For example, he observed that a corpulent man or a pregnant woman walks with a straight back; therefore, if a youth stoops, he should be made to carry a burden in front of his body. Andry devised balancing and gymnastic exercises and encouraged childhood games. He also used massage, cold applications, and what we now call orthopedic beds. For established deformities, he resorted to the use of mechanical aids. He also believed that deformities in children were caused by ill-fitting or restrictive clothing and by unnatural postures enforced by badly designed children's furniture. He thus paid great attention to the adoption of proper posture, which he regarded as being of the utmost importance. Later in the eighteenth century, Jean Pierre David was to show the value of rest in the body's own repair system, but Andry demonstrated that exercise as well as rest had an appropriate place in the treatment of physical problems." (Grolier/Medicine). Two vols, 12mo (167 x 97 mm), bound in two fine contemporary French calf with richly gilt spines, pp. [4], 47 [1], i-cxviii [i.e., xcviij] 345 [3], engraved frontispiece by J. Guélard after A. Humblot, 14 engraved plates; [2] i-v [vi] 365, [5]. A very fine and fresh copy.

      - Greifswald & Leipzig, Joan. Jac. Weitbrecht, 1741. 4:o.
