Venice: Giovanni Battistia Recurti, 1741. First edition. Hard cover. Fine/A fine specimen of Venetian book arts of the 18th century. The text is basically a vehicle for the nine full-page portraits of Medici dukes by Campiglia, which are highly realized and vivid. Almost as compelling are the views of the major cities of Tuscany engraved by the Venetian book illustrator Giuseppe Filosi (who had "borrowed" the idea from the headpieces by Visentini illustrating the 1738 edition of Guicciardini). The very feel of the paper gives off a sensation of luxury. All collations call for nine portraits, as in this copy, although copies exist with extra plates inserted.. Royal Folio (47cm); [2], xxiv, 192, [14] pages, and 9 full page portraits after Giandomenico Campiglia. Title page in red and black, with complicated allegorical device by Giuseppe Filosi; 8 chapter head pieces by Filosi showing the cities of Tuscany, and 9 tail pieces (some duplicate images) also by Filosi. Engraved initials. Bound in contemporary full vellum over boards, with recent leather title label. Edges stained blue. Very light marginal dampstain in 19th quire, else a bright, crisp, fresh and nearly pristine copy. References: Morazzoni, 217; Brunet (1842) I:314.

Woodcut device on title. 4 p.l., 424 (i.e. 416) pp., 76* pp. 8vo, cont. mottled calf, flat spine richly gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: G. Martin, 1741. The scarce sale catalogue of the library of Antoine Lancelot (1675-1740), French historian and archeologist and Inspector of the Collège Royal, who assisted Bayle with his Dictionnaire Critique and worked with Mabillon on various scholarly projects. Lancelot served as under-librarian of the Collège Mazarin where he deciphered many of its early manuscripts and arranged the archives. This was a large and fine library of 6000 lots (often with several books in a lot), particularly rich in French history, and including 240 manuscripts. In his introduction, Martin explains that he has reprinted Lancelot's own manuscript catalogue with his notes, though somewhat differently classified. The second part, lots numbered 4,745 to 6,000, lists the books acquired by him after the completion of Lancelot's own catalogue. Very nice copy with the scarce supplement. ❧ Biographie Universelle, Vol. 23, pp. 322-24. Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, col. 479-"Catalogue important."         La Famille de Marêchal [Pl. 40]

Paris: Moyreau, 1741. Hand-coloured engraving on laid paper by Moyreau. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling and minor foxing, mild rippling, and a small stain in the top right corner of the sheet. A few small brown and black spots in the left margin. 14 1/4 x 18 3/4 inches. 18 5/8 x 23 3/4 inches. A fine composition showing a soldier or cavalryman returning home to his family. This beautifully coloured print is one of many engravings Jean Moyreau (1690-1762) made of Wouwerman's paintings. Born into a family of Dutch artists in Haarlem in 1619, the prolific draughtsman and painter Philips Wouwerman was primarily renowned for his lively battle and hunting scenes. After an early elementary introduction to the art of painting by his father, Paulus Joostens, he trained with the landscape painter Jan Wynants (1620-1679) and briefly worked in the Hamburg studio of the history painter Everard Decker (d. 1647) around 1638. Wouwerman later returned to Haarlem, where he joined the Guild of St. Luke, which later elected him to the office of vinder in 1646. His elegantly rendered, distinctive works, which are characterized by their luminous colour and detailed, animated treatment of figures and landscape alike, were extremely popular in the seventeenth century as well as the nineteenth century, during which they were zealously collected. In addition to his hunting scenes, Wouwerman's varied and substantial repertoire of subjects included military and battle scenes, landscapes, travellers, animals and genre subjects. Cf.         The North- American?s Almanack, And Gentleman?s and Lady?s Diary, For the Year of our Lord Christ 1776

Thomas, Edes, & Hall, Pamphlet format, 8vo, stitched self wrappers, 24pp. Some browning and foxing, early child?s scribbling in bottom margin of title, and the usual corner folds. Overall in very good condition, better than you normally see for almanacs of this period. What makes this almanac unique is that Sterns (1741-1809) included an account of Lexington and Concord, which has been attributed to William S, Gordon. Although Sterns was believed to have Tory leanings, and served time in jail for it, this commentary appears to present more of American perspective. This first hand report of the start of the American Revolution begins with an account of how British soldiers fired on dispersing American militia at Lexington, and how a more organized group of the American militia fired back at the British at Concord ("The Shot Heard Round The World?) sending them into retreat.         Album of 50 botanical paintings on vellum, 25 of which feature South African plants. Executed 1777-1780.

Folio album (mount dimensions 460 x 375 mm, vellum sheet dimensions 340 x 255 mm), comprising one manuscript calligraphic title 'Drawings by Elizabeth [Montagu] Duchess of Manchester' and 50 botanical paintings, body- and watercolours on vellum, the vellums mounted within green wash frame borders on heavy card, the vellums numbered consecutively 1-50, and botanical names in Latin and English, with places of origin, in pen on versos; contemporary straight-grained morocco, elaborate gilt panels with green and yellow morocco overlays with greek key border, floral border, gilt greek key dentelles, spine with elaborate gilt panels and green morocco label 'Drawings', gilt edges, bookplate and label of Kimbolton Castle on front marbled paper pastedown. A fine series of beautifully executed paintings of exotic flowering plants recently introducted into cultivation, and half of which come from South Africa. They are painted in the style of Ehret. Elizabeth Montagu (1741-1832) was an accomplished botanical artist, who may have been taught by Peter Brown (fl 1758-99), court painter to the Prince of Wales, and probable pupil of Georg Dionysius Ehret. The South African specimens reflect some of the introductions made by the botanist and plant collector Francis Masson (1741-1805), who was sent by Kew Gardens to South Africa in 1772 to collect plants and bulbs. He collected until the end of 1775, before going on to the Canaries, Azores, Maderia, and West Indies (where many of the other plants depicted derive from), returning to England in 1781. This time frame matches closely that of the present album. He was working under the aegis of Sir Joseph Banks, director of Kew, and also friend of George Montagu, Elizabeth's husband, so a Masson/Kew provenance of the plants is most likely.         Nicolai Klimii iter subterraneum novam telluris theoriam ac historiam qvintae monarchiae adhuc nobis incognitae exhibens e bibliotheca B. Abelini.

Hafniæ & Lipsiæ, Sumptibus Iacobi Prevssii. 1741. 8vo. Cont. half calf w. somewhat worn back. Complete w. the engraved frontispiece, 2 engraved plates and the foldable map of the underworld. Engraved title-page. A bit of browning.. First edition of this influential utopian masterpiece. The satirical piece of science fiction by the "father of Danish Literature", the famous Danish professor of Law and Philosophy, Ludvig Holberg, can be compared in style and setup to Swift's "Gulliver's Travels", which was published 15 years earlier. The sharp political satire is not bound to a specific nation, but to the entire human race, and thus gives a picture of human conditions and thought in general in this period. Though the work does not bear a title which directly indicates its obvious utopian connections, as does for instance More's "Utopia", the name of the land of the living trees, in which Niels Klim arrives, "Potu", is very likely to constitute a word game indicating it's obvious literary intention: Spelled backwards we get: "UTOP". The quaint creatures and societies that Niels Klim meets in the underworld are said to be comparable to the characterization he gives in his Epistles (III) of the different European peoples, and thus we find satirical examples of the English mixed with the Dutch (in Potu) and the French mixed with the Germans (in Martinia). (Vilh. And. II, p. 133). (= "All in all the contrast is between Potu, the ideal country - it is actually called so in the end of the book - and Martinia, the caricature, not only geographically, but historically as being between the realism of the 18th century and the formalism of the 17th century. Potu is the country of natural law and natural religion, Martinia (not to say Lutheria) is that of orthodoxy and aristocracy. Freedom of spirit and state-discipline are the tendencies of the book. Since Holberg stood so strongly on the dominating state, he ought to have expected absolution for not giving up free thought.").Ehr-M.: XII, 213

Philadelphia: Printed and Sold by Andrew Bradford, [1741].. [32]pp. 12mo. Printed self-wrappers, stitched. Contemporary ink inscription ("Jacob Taylor") in upper margin of titlepage; contemporary ink correction on p.[27]. Cellophane tape joining signature at spine, occasional minor foxing. Else bright, clean, and very good. In a half morocco and cloth box. An almanac by Jacob Taylor, who published his important Pennsylvania almanac for the years 1700 to 1746. It is a distinct possibility that the present copy was owned and signed by Taylor, as his inscribed name on the titlepage is accompanied later in the volume by a manuscript correction to a poem ("manumated" becomes "manumitted"). Taylor took the poetry in his almanacs seriously, printing excerpts of PARADISE LOST in 1741, and composing well-received verse of his own. In addition to the calendar, this 1746 almanac contains a substantial amount of poetry; lists of courts, fairs, and Quaker meetings; and a discussion of Hannibal's oath before the gods. This he concludes with a quote from the 1739 almanac of "R. Saunders" (Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard) on the dangers of false wit and pride in the present age, commenting favorably on Saunders, "By wicked Wit the Truth is often drown'd; Here certain Truth adorn'd with Wit is found" (p.[23]). Taylor's almanac was printed by different Philadelphia printers over time. Some were printed by Franklin, but this one was issued by Andrew Bradford, one of Franklin's rivals and the son of William Bradford, the first printer in Philadelphia. DRAKE 9634. EVANS 4818.

First edition of one of the most influential and richest sources of information on the Jesuits in Colombia. 1741. Madrid. Manuel Fernández. In folio (292 mm x 200 mm). 1  [blank] + 14 ff. + 618 + 1 ff. + folding map. Contemporary limp vellum, lacking ties, gently soiled, entirely unrestored. A fine, fresh and tall copy, last folios with damp stain on inner lower margin, last folio with paper loss away from text, scattered foxing or browning but overall excellent with the appeal of a genuine copy. First ?and only- edition of this extremely rare and important work on the Jesuit Missions in New Granada (current Colombia), including extensive information on the Orinoco. The work is rich in information regarding the labor and progresses made by the Societas Iesu, the local costumes, way of life, and the history of the region. It also includes information taken from earlier Jesuit sources, mainly those of father Gumilla, who focuses more on the Orinoco. ?... a very important chronicle of a part of America where there exists very little documentation. It is a work that, with that of Piedrahita, forms a complete history of New Granada? (Leclerc). Cassani (1673 -1750) was a Spanish Jesuit professor of mathematics and astronomy, a prolific writer and learned scholar and ultimately one of the founders of the Academia de la Lengua Española (1713); amongst his works we count the Tratado de la naturaleza y origen de los cometas (Madrid, 1737) and a part of the famed biography of the Jesuits Varones Ilustres de la Compañia de Jesus. As a Jesuit, he had access to the letters and relations from missionaries to America, which allowed him to compose this chronicle on the Jesuit exploits in Colombia. This work is ostensibly the most important and comprehensive made on the subject to the time of its publication. Illustrated with a folding map of Colombia and Venezuela, by Minguet after the map by Gumilla -published in his ?El Orinoco Ilustrado?, 1741-, which shows the locations of the full network of Jesuit missions in the region; it includes the mouth of the Orinoco River, the North of Brazil and ?La Cayana? in the Dutch settlements.         Essays on physiognomy, designed to promote the knowledge and the love of mankind

Complete with all blank leaves, half-titles and directions to the binder. With more than 800 engravings, including 173 copper engraved plates and 359 text images by and after Thomas Holloway, Fuseli and others, and by William Blake. Contemporary polished calf, gilt spines, front joints a bit sensitive; interior with minor foxing and off-setting of the plates as usual, but generally a tall, clean and well-margined set in excellent condition. First English edition of Volumes I and II, with the sheets of the third volume reissued by Stockdale. The work is famous for the splendid illustrations and vignettes, including the plates by William Blake. It was a classic pseudo-scientific work, extremely influential in the history of psychiatry, and represents Lavater's account of madmen, demons, and terror. Fuseli's drawings are rendered with distinction in the engravings of Thomas Holloway, and in one instance, Gillray (see Ray, The illustrator and the book in England, 20). Lavater (1741-1801) was a German poet, mystical writer and physiognomist.

Ngt snävt skuren i nedre marginalen. Författaren dog 1778 i Stockholm
