Copper-engraved wall map, with original outline colour, of four joined sheets, surrounded by text and vignettes printed on separate sheets, backed onto old linen, with contemporary wooden rollers, overall in very good condition. 49 x 55 inches. A rare and monumental wall map of Asia by one of the great French masters of cartography. Jean-Baptiste Nolin was one of the most accomplished and certainly the most ambitious French cartographer of his era. He founded what ultimately became a family empire in Paris in the 1680s. Exceptionally, he managed to marry superlative decorative ornamentation with the serious objective of producing maps that reflected the most advanced rendering of geographical detail. The artistic élan of his compositions evinced a style that preserved the rhetorical ambitions of the Baroque ethic, while anticipating the playful elegance of the Rococo period. His masterpieces, many like the present wall map, were monumental in scale and represented Nolin's desire to overwhelm his competition in what was a very challenging market. Highly controversial, Nolin occasionally described himself as "the Engraver to the King," an appointment of which the royal court was curiously never apprised. In his endeavour to include the very latest geographical details on his maps, he seldom hesitated to acquire information from his eminent contemporaries, most notably Guillaume De L'Isle and Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, Jean-Dominique Cassini and the Sieur de Tillemon. At times these rivals were not appreciative of Nolin's adoption of their intellectual property, and De L'Isle successfully sued Nolin for plagiarism in 1705. However, the larger-than-life Nolin always seemed to transcend these challenges, leaving a thriving enterprise to be taken up by his son. The present map was created in 1740 by Jean- Baptiste Nolin II, largely based on an earlier maps produced by his father. While the geographical depiction of most of the continent is quite assured for the time, this map is one of the eighteenth-century's most fascinating experiments in cartographic speculation. Published on the very eve of Vitus Bering's voyage to Alaska and eastern Siberia, this map shows that contemporary Europeans had no real concept of what lands might have occupied these regions. North America is thus shown as reaching down to a point just north of Japan. On the other side of the continent, an absurdly large Greenland looms closely over the northern coast of Siberia to a point past Nova Zemlya. On the main map the Mariana Islands, or Nouvelle Phillipines, adorn the Pacific in a configuration consistent with the account of the Jesuit explorer Paul Clain. Curiously, the inset in the upper right corner depicts a different rendering of the same islands as suggested in a Jesuit report of 1697. Nolin's work is an artistically virtuous composition on a monumental scale, the image being surrounded by thirty vignettes that depict various events from Greek, Roman, Jewish, Christian, and Islamic history. In turn, each vignette is set within an elaborate baroque frame of a unique design, accompanied by textual narratives. The extensive text along the lower margin is entitled "Description Géographique de l'Asie." The upper left of the main image is adorned with an especially resplendent cartouche, featuring Jesuit priests evangelizing to the diverse peoples of the continent. This wall map is one of the greatest subjects of the Nolins' legacy, not only being a masterful work of art and a fascinating image that tests the very limits of European geographical knowledge, but a vivid record of a dramatic transitional period in the history of cartography, and of society in general.

And in a letter to William Dean Howells, dated July 5, 1875, Mark Twain reports just completing the manuscript for 'The Adventures of Tom Sawyer' and deciding against taking Tom into adulthood—to do so, he says, "would be fatal . . . in any shape but autobiographically—like Gil Blas. Gil Blas was written in French between 1700 and 1730. The adventures of its hero are described from naive youth through cunning servant to landed proprietor and nobleman. Though nominally set in Spain, it is in fact French through and through.

Grand Theatre de la Guerre en Amerique Suivant les Plus Novelles observations des Espagnols, Anglois, Francois & Hollandois mis au jour par R. & I. Ottens

[Amsterdam]: R. & J. Ottens, [1740]. Engraved map, with 8 inset maps, on 6 joined sheets, fine contemporary hand-colouring. Very good condition apart from expert repairs to splits at folds and creases where the map was folded. 35 3/4 x 64 inches. A spectacular large-scale map of the Gulf of Mexico from Florida to Guiana, the West Indies, and whole of Central America: a graphic reminder of the War of Jenkins' Ear. As its title suggests, this spectacular map depicts the full American theatre of the war with eight insets showing the principal ports of the region: 1) A Draught of St. Augustin and its Harbour; 2) La Havane; 3) Plan de la Ville Espagnole de S. Domingue; 4) Harbourg [sic.] de Porto Bello; 5) Plan de la Baye de Carthagena; 6) Nouvelle Carte de L'Isle de Curacao; 7) Nouveau Plan du Port et de la Ville d'Acapulco; 8) Plan de la Vera-Cruz. The inset of the harbour of Porto Bello is after Popple and the chart of St. Augustine is copied from Moll's West Indies. The War of Jenkins' Ear (1739-1742) took its name from Robert Jenkins, captain of the "Rebecca", who claimed that the Spanish had cut off his ear in 1731. Public opinion forced Robert Walpole's government to declare war on 23 October 1739, after Jenkins ear was produced, in a moment of high drama during a debate in the House of Commons. A year later the war merged into the War of the Austrian Succession. The stated reason for the war was the supposed Spanish mistreatment of English seamen; the war, however, is seen as resulting from the commercial rivalry between the Spanish and British in the Caribbean basin. The publishing history of the map is complicated by the fact that it appears to have been issued as the sheets were completed presumably in a rush by the publishers to capitalise on the interest in the region. The two middle sheets were made available on their own (under the title Nova Isthmi Americani, qui et Panamiensis item Dariensis, Tabula) and advertised by Reinier and Joshua Ottens in the Amsterdamsche Courant on May 12, 1740. The next two sheets were first advertised on 6 October 1740. By 10 June 1741, the full six sheets were available: they were advertised at a price of 48 stuyvers (see Van der Krogt, 'Advertenties'). BLMC K.123.9 a-f; NMM B6177/2; Phillips Atlases 3495: 114- 119.

However, the larger-than-life Nolin always seemed to transcend these challenges, leaving a thriving enterprise to be taken up by his son. The present map was created in 1740 by Jean-Baptiste Nolin II, largely based on earlier maps produced by his father. This work ambitiously endeavours to depict the Americas in the most up-to-date geographic form, generally borrowing from the most authoritative sources. Ironically, it was the senior Nolin's desire to acquire the most accurate information that caused him to propagate one of the eighteenth-century's greatest cartographic myths. By this time, South America had been quite thoroughly explored, however, the Pacific northwest and the adjacent interior areas of North America remained largely unseen by European eyes. The only prominent feature present in this terra incognita is the mythical Mer de l'Ouest, that sees the Pacific protrude dramatically into the continental landmass. The senior Nolin was the first cartographer to put this detail into print, his campaign of corporate espionage having uncovered a manuscript map by De L'Isle which depicted the sea. This incident was one of the key pieces of evidence that won De L'Isle's suit against Nolin. Although the Mer de l'Ouest is dramatically smaller here than in its original form (and is unlabelled in this map) it sustains a fascinating myth. The map is an artistically virtuous composition on a monumental scale, the image being surrounded by thirty vignettes that depict the dramatic historical events that shaped the founding of the French and Spanish empires in the Americas. Each vignette is set within an elaborate baroque frame of a unique design, accompanied by descriptive text. The extensive text along the lower margin entitled "Description Géographique de l'Amérique" places this important map into its greater social and historical context. The map is further enhanced by a large decorative title cartouche, magnificently framed by period rocaille motifs, that depicts French Jesuits ministering to the Indians. A small vignette below the cartouche shows beavers at work, a popular motif on eighteenth-century maps of America The map also features a decorative detail that represents a social commentary on contemporary European attitudes towards the indigenous peoples they encountered in the New World. The scene occupying the lower-left of the main image depicts Mars, the god of war, capriciously watching over two Europeans who are firing rifles onto a group of native Americans, who themselves are engaging in macabre acts of cannibalism. This wall map is one of the greatest subjects of the Nolins' legacy, not only being a masterful work of art and a fascinating image that tests the very limits of European geographical knowledge, but a vivid record of a dramatic transitional period in the history of cartography, and of society in general.

(Translated by G. Louis Le Clerc, ount de Buffon).

Paris, De Bure, 1740. 4to. Contemporary half calf, raised bands, richly gilt spine and and red speckled edges. Leather title-label to spine. Corners neatly repaired. Title in red/black. (2), III-XXX, (2) Errata, 148 pp., many diagrams. The "Preface" and the first 18 leaves of the text with a foxing to lower margin and right corners. The "Preface" is an historical account of Newton's method "la sublime méthode", written by Buffon. Without the leaf "Extrait des Registres".. The influential first French edition of Newton's important work, which constitutes the most extensive description of the mathematical method he used in his famous "Principia", the method of infinitesimals, which was already written about 1671, but not published until 1736, i.e. posthumously, with the title "Method of Fluxions and Infinite Series...". In this work "Newton stated clearly the fundamental problem of the calculus: the relation of quantities being given, to find the relation of the fluxions of these, and conversely. In conformity with this problem and the new notation, Newton then gave examples of his method....In this book Newton introduced his characteristic notation and conceptions. He regarded his variable quantities as generated by the continuous motion of points, lines and planes, rather than as aggregates of infinitesimal elements, the view which had appeared in "De analysi"...The rate of generation Newton called a "fluxion", designating it by means of a letter with a dot over it, a "pricked letter", the quantity generates he called a "fluent".( Boyer, The History of the Calculus.).Colson (in his preface to the first edition from 1736) says: "I gladly embraced the opportunity that was put into my hands, of publishing this posthumous work, because I found it had been composed with that view and design. And that my own Country-men might first enjoy the benefit of this publication, I resolved upon giving it an English translation, with some additional remarks of my own, I thought it highly injurious to the memory and reputation of the real Author, as well as invidious to the glory of our own Nation, that so curious and useful a piece should be any longer suppress'd and confined to a few private hands, which ought to be communicated to all the learned World for general Instruction. It was through the French translations of his works that Newton came to play the seminal role as the most important of mathematicians that he did in France, and particularly the years around 1740, when the present work appeared in French for the first time were seminal to the scientific development in France, where the likes of Voltaire had only just made the nation acquinted with the work of the great mathematician. La Figure de la Terre determinée. Par Messieurs de L'Academie Royale des Sciences, qui ont mesuré le Degré du Méridien au Cercle Polaire. (Discours lu dans l'Assemblée publique du 13 Novembre 1737)

Paris, L'Imprimerie Royale, 1740. 4to. Without wrappers. Extracted from "Mémoires de l'Academie des Sciences. Année 1737". Engraved frontispiece a. titlepage to Année 1737. Pp. 389-469, 1 engraved map (from Torneå to Kittis) and 5 folded engraved plates.. First printing of the official report from the French Academy of the geodetic expedition to Lapland in order to settle the conflict between Earth-elangators and Earth-flatteners, between the French and the British. "Newton had calculated from the Earth's rotational force at the Equator that its equatoeial diameter should exceed its polar diameter by 0.44 per cent, or 27 km (17 miles); similar in Jupiter, rotating more than twice as fast, the disparity of the diameters was shown to be even greater... In France, however, tha Cassinis from geodetic measurements stretching along the meridian at Paris from the Channel to the Pyrennees came to exactly the opposite conclusion - that the polar diameter of the Earth was the greater. After Maupertuis had examined this imcompatibility in 1733, the Academy of Sciences decided that it should be settled by measure of a degree of latitude taken in two widely separated parts of the globe. Maupertuis, with Clairaut, took a party to the Golf ofBothnia. La Condamine, with Bouguer, took another to Peru. maupertuis departed in May 1736 and was absent for a year, only in December (1737) was he able to announce the result that, in accordance with Newton's dynamical theory, the degreee in the far north was loner than that in Paris. More years elepsed before the degreee in Peru was found to be shorter. As Voltaire put in a wrily witty (but un-Baconian) couplet addresseed to Maupertuis:"In tedious deserts you were forced to roam. To find the truth that Newton knew at home." (Rupert Hall "Revolution in Science 1500-1750, pp.351-52).Parkinson "Breakthroughs" 1736-37 E

London: Printed for F. Noble, 1740.. First Edition, [22],[2]pp., with the final advert leaf, engraved frontispiece, lightly soiled, disbound."No reference to Mother Shipton prior to 1641 is in existence. It is thus difficult to determine whether this English prophet actually existed as she is represented in folklore, though writings seriously ascribed to her are being reproduced even today. There were several women who claimed to be her, but it is a Yorkshire claimant who has won the title. Mother Shipton was Ursula Southill (or Sowthiel, or Southiel), the incredibly ugly daughter of Agatha Southill, known locally herself as a powerful witch. She is supposed to have been born in a cave at Dropping Well, Knaresborough, Yorkshire, in 1488, and because of her unfortunate appearance and reputed powers, was widely rumoured to be the child of Satan. Sometime about 1512, she married a wealthy builder from York named Tobias Shipton. She soon attained considerable notoriety throughout England as "The Northern Prophetess," and her prognostications received great public attention, were printed in pamphlets, and were widely distributed."-James Randi, An Encyclopedia of Claims, Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and Supernatural, 1995.
