A very good copy bound in contemporary full calf, professionally re-backed preserving original spine. Some scuffing to boards. Gilt decoration on spine a little rubbed. Armorial bookplate of Harry Lancelot Lee Esq. (1759-1821) who built Coton Hall in Shropshire in 1800 and was from the English branch of the family whose American branch included Robert E. Lee. Antoine Gaubil (1689-1759), Jesuit father, eminent mathematician, astronomer and historian, entered the Society of Jesus at the age of fifteen. He was sent to China in 1722. Arriving in Canton, he immediately began studying Chinese and Manchu, rapidly becoming so proficient in both that he was appointed official interpreter to the Imperial Court. In 1723 he moved to the French residence in Peking where he spent the rest of his life. He was Supérieur from 1742 to 1748. A prolific writer and translator, he was considered the most competent astronomer and historian of his generation. BLOND, Guillaume le.
Elemens de fortification ...Paris, Charles-Antoine Jombert (colophon: printed by Jacques Chardon), 1739. 12mo. With 13 numbered folding engraved plates. Contemporary calf, gold-tooled spine. [12], 230, [10] pp. Rare first edition of a very popular work on French fortification building, in a handy pocket-sized format that no doubt gave it a much greater audience than the earlier manuals in folio and perhaps even than most of Vauban's works. "Le plus fécund de nos écrivains militaires ou plûtôt le plus infatigable de nos compilateurs" (Jähns quoting Bardin). At this date Vauban dominated the art of fortification not only in France but also abroad, and Blond makes frequent reference to him in the text and plates, but he presents the systems of all the great French masters: Errard, Marolois, De Ville, Pagan, Landau and Vauban. The book includes a 16-page combined glossary and index, and Jombert's 4-page advertisement for about 15 publications on practical mathematics and engineering, reporting the formats, numbers of plates, prices and sometimes noting large paper issues. With the fore-edge of several folding plates tattered and dirty, creases in several plates, and some minor stains in the fore-edge margin, not approaching the text, but otherwise in good condition. The binding is rubbed and has cracks in the hinges. First edition of what was to become the most widely used fortification manual in France. Jähns, pp. 1752-1753; Jordan 2069 (3 copies); WorldCat (1 copy).

TURGOT, Michel-Etienne; Louis BRETEZ.
Paris, Achevé de gravure, 1739. . Folio (56.4 x 45.4 cm). Folding overview map, 20 double-page maps engraved by Claude Lucas after Bretez including 1-16 numbered in the plate, plates 18 and 19 joined and folded. Contemporary red morocco gilt, covers with gilt borders, gilt arms of Paris to covers, fleur-de-lys to corners, spine in ten compartments, gilt lettered direct in second, others with fleur-de-lys tooling, raised bands, a very attractive example. Turgot's celebrated plan of Paris during the reign of Louis XV - a fine, fresh copy attractively bound in full morocco. Michel-Etienne Turgot (1690-1751), Louis XV's Prévot des Marchands, commissioned this plan in 1734 from Louis Bretez, a sculptor, painter and perspective specialist, who used the conventional bird's-eye representation (isometric projection). The stunning result shows maps with great and decorative details, being an important record of the architecture and gardens of Baroque Paris, the world capital at the time. This was the last major example of this type of plan. Michel-Etienne Turgot was chief of the municipality of Paris as provost of merchants (the equivalent of today's mayor). He is the father of the famous economist and statesman Anne-Robert-Jacques Turgot, which history has remembered as an early advocate for economic liberalism. What motivated Michel-Etienne Turgot to commission a map of Paris was his will to promulgate the reputation of the city for Parisian, provincial or foreign elites. That is why he asked Louis Bretez (c. 16.. - Paris, 1736), a French architect, cartographer and professor … [Click Below for Full Description]

[DRAWING]. SAUNDERS, John.
[John Sturges in Turkish costume with turban and gold-trimmed coat].Peterborough, 1739. Pastel on paper, mounted on canvas (41 x 30.5 cm), stretched over (original?) wooden board. A pastel portrait drawn by the prolific itinerant portraitist John Saunders (1682-ca.1758) at Peterborough in September 1739. Saunders is recorded as active in East Anglia, the Midlands and elsewhere in the mid-18th century. The sitter John Sturges appears in Turkish costume, wearing a white turban with blue feather and a coat with gold trimmings and a fur collar. Saunders probably based it on a 1733 mezzotint drawn and engraved by Francis Kyte (d. 1744) after a painting (or the ink-wash drawing noted below?) by John Vanderbank (1694-1739). The pastel is of interest as an example of mid-18th century depiction of Turkish costume. With a paper label on the back with a manuscript note repeating information from the autograph pencil inscription by Saunders on the front, top right: "Saunders pinxit after Mr. J[oh]n Vanderbank Peterborough Sept. anno d. 1739". Two negligible scratches to surface, otherwise in good condition. Jeffares, "John Saunders 1682-p. 1758", in: Dictionary of pastellists before 1800 (online ed.).

Grand-Aigle folio (56 x 45.5 cm). An enormous engraved map of Paris in 20 numbered sheets plus a key map, at a scale of about 1:2000, each segment measuring 55 x 84 cm (plate size 51.5 x 80.5 cm; image 48 x 79 cm) which would give an assembled map with image size about 240 x 316 cm! The key map is slightly larger than the segments and folds out at the head. Bound as an atlas (but with segments 18 and 19, containing the cartouche, assembled to make a long fold-out) in contemporary gold-tooled red morocco, each board with as centrepiece the Paris coat of arms (a ship with chief a field of fleurs-de-lis). An extraordinary engraved map of Paris and surroundings in 20 enormous sheets, showing the city and its buildings in a bird's-eye view (the buildings in an orthographic projection, nearly isometric, but mostly from a slightly higher angle, around 45°). It covers the area within about 3 kilometres of the centre of Paris at a scale of about 1:2000, showing every house and every other building in great detail with windows and doors, as well as the layout of gardens, parks and orchards, boats in and beside the rivers, and in the surrounding countryside also topographic features. No map gives a clearer idea of what Paris looked like ca. 1740. Michel Étienne Turgot (1690-1751), "prévôt des marchands" of Paris (more or less the mayor) and one of the most powerful men in France, ordered its production, which occupied … [Click Below for Full Description]

RUMPHIUS, Georg Everard.
Thesaurus imaginum piscium testaceorum; ... ut et cochlearum; ... quibus accedunt conchylia, ... denique mineralia; ...The Hague, Pieter de Hondt, 1739. Large folio (44.5 x 27 cm). With an engraved title-page, engraved portrait of the author, and 60 numbered engraved plates with hundreds of figures, coloured in an early hand. Recased in contemporary sprinkled calf, gold-tooled board edges. Rebacked with a gold-tooled spine. [4], 14, "LXI"-"LXVIII" pp. plus engr. title, portrait & plates I-LX. Second Latin edition of a beautiful pictorial record of one of the finest early collections of East Indian marine specimens, with scientifically accurate engravings, apparently drawn in the year of the death of the owner Georg Everard Rumphius (1627/28-1702). The engraved title-page and 60 illustration plates are beautifully and subtly coloured by hand in a wide variety of colours. The book excludes vertebrate fish but shows crustaceans, sea urchins, sand-dollars, starfish, shellfish, barnacles and coral, along with crystals, minerals, amber, fossils and even some man-made artefacts, such as axe heads. Some plates show one large figure, others more than twenty small ones. Rumphius, a German physician and naturalist, worked for the Dutch East India Company (VOC) from 1652 to his death, mostly on Ambon in the Moluccas. Traditionally the illustrations were attributed to Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), but this has recently been proven to be erroneous. With a marginal tear in plate XLIX, but further in very good condition and wholly untrimmed, giving generous margins. Beautifully coloure … [Click Below for Full Description]

GIBBS, James
London: for W. Innys and R. Manby; J. and P. Knapton, 1739. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. James Gibbs was an 18th-century British architect, who has long been considered one of the most influential architects in all of Britain. His style was unique and new to the time, but the ideas and design techniques played a heavy role in the move into Neoclassic movement. In 1728, Gibbs published his most important written work, 'A Book of Architecture, containing designs of buildings and ornaments'. In this book, Gibbs shows his own designs for ornamental decoration used in gardens, churches, universities, and memorial monuments. It was also the first book on British architecture to be published solely devoted to personal architectural designs. According to architecture historian John Summerson, this book was "the most widely-used architecture book of the century, not only throughout Britain, but in the American colonies and the West Indies.".
