1739. Good antiquarian condition. See description. You are bidding on: [Collegium Medicum Bruxellense] Pharmacopoea Bruxellensis Senatus Authoritate Munita. Viduae [Widow] Foppens, 1739. Latin language sextodecimo (16mo) size book in good antiquarian condition. This is the 4th edition according to a previous bookseller's note included in this auction (not pictured). The frontispiece illustration (portraying the mixing of medicines and chemicals in an apothecary) is sewn in, which explains the small stub of a page that follows the title page. The 'caracteres chymici' leaf (with alchemical and astrological symbols) has minor water damage and is a little worn, particularly at the fore-edge. This original calf skin binding has cats-paw style decorated covers, red/orange speckled edges, sewn headbands, a silk ribbon bookmark, and a decoratively gilded spine. I have owned and studied many French language books published during the reign of Louis XV and I'm happy to say that this book's physical attributes are absolutely consistent with bindings of that particular era. However, there are some flaws: wedge-shaped text-block, outer hinges splitting (but keep in mind both boards are completely attached), bumped corners, busted headcap with 1.0 cm loss to headband, scuffed spine with one small perforation in lowest panel, old paper repair noticed inside (not cellophane or scotch tape, see p. 142), minor water staining, and even lesser foxing. All of these flaws notwithstanding, still in solid good condition, especially considering it was actively used as a reference book. How do we kn … [Click Below for Full Description]

BOUCHARDON, Édmé || HUQUIER, Gabriel
[Click Below for Full Description]

"The Power of Christ's Resurrection." LONDON: Printed for C. WHITEFIELD, in the Year MDCCXXXIX _____________________________________________________________________________ George Whitefield was born on December 16, 1714 at the Bell Inn, Gloucester, England, and died in Newburyport, Massachusetts on September 30, 1770. In contemporary accounts, he, not John Wesley, is spoken of as the supreme figure and even as the founder of Methodism. He was famous for his preaching in America which was a significant part of the an 18th century movement of Christian revivals, sometimes called "The Great Awakening." In 1738 Whitefield preached a series of revivals in Georgia. Here he established the Bethesda Orphanage, which still exists to this day. In Georgia there was originally a prohibition on slavery. However in 1749 there was a movement to introduce it there, which Whitefield supported. He owned slaves who worked at the orphanage, and these were bequeathed to the Countess of Huntingdon when he died. When he returned to America in November, 1739 he preached nearly every day for months to large crowds of sometimes several thousand people as he travelled throughout the colonies, especially New England. Like his contemporary and acquaintance, Jonathan Edwards, Whitefield preached with a Calvinist theology. He was known for his powerful voice and hi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Contemporary plain wrappers, stitched, spine lettered in MS: Catalogue Le Feron. Wrappers and fols. A1r and A2r soiled. Preserved in a fitted cloth case by Jace Graf of Cloverleaf Studio (forthcoming). ONE OF THE EARLIEST FRENCH LIBRARY AUCTION CATALOGUES PRINTED BY A WOMAN. Only 8 others of its kind precede it. The present sale catalogue was printed by Marie-Anne [née Merigo] Delatour. The library was a large and fine one; it belonged to Jean-Georges Le Féron (1673-1738), Seigneur de Tournelles and Pont-sur-Sceaux, a historian, bibliophile, and Minister of State. Scarce: five copies are recorded worldwide (none in the U.S.). To our knowledge the catalogue has never been reproduced digitally or otherwise. Our copy is preserved in completely original, unsophisticated condition. The catalogue was printed by Marie-Anne Delatour (a.k.a. De La Tour), a remarkable businesswoman about which too little has been published. She was the sister of the Parisian bookseller Francois-Gabriel Merigot (1700-1784), who holds the distinction of being imprisoned in the Bastille (several times) for selling "mauvais livres." Marie-Anne married the printer-bookseller Louis-Denis Delatour ca. 1728, and succeeded him on his death in 1734. According to a proces-verbal of 1744, she owned five printing presses and employed no less than 9 workers. In 1765 she sold her business to Pi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Jean-Georges, Le Feron
Paris: Veuve Delatour (i.e. Marie-Anne Delatour) [for M.-J. Barrois], 1739. 12mo. 156 pp. Collation: A-N6 (lacking [pi]1, the title-page, although this copy probably never had one -- see below), 2513 lots. Edges untrimmed.

Domenico Mariano Franceschini (fl. 1700-1730)
[Click Below for Full Description]
