Bickham, George
Printed for and sold by the Author, London, 1741. A classic and seminal work on typography in the scarcest earliest printing in book form, complete, with many beautiful engravings and trompe d'oeil touches. Folio, 43 by 26.5 cm. 212 leaves, with engraved text and illustrations only on rectos. [5], table of contents, followed by 52 sections. Paginated eccentrically, with insertion pages and restarted numbering within continuing numbering. Besides the beautiful typography of many different styles and designs, with elaborate tracery, the work is laden with aphoristic writing, homilies, apercus, business forms of a wide variety, and most pleasing of all are the trophies, cameo portraits, rococo and Georgian ornament, bucolic and idealized scenery and diversity of imagery that so perfectly captures the sensibility of the period of issue. Particularly wonderful are the artful penned imagery and the three trompe d'oeil cards. The 1741 edition of this work is seldom found in commerce (as opposed to the 1743 edition). The calf has heavy wear, with crackin, rubbing, scratching, some dryness, the shadowy impression of two books that must have sat atop the volume at one time. The boards have been reattached, with that restoration not being a pretty one. Within, toning of the leaves around their edges. One leaf numbered 57 with big chip and also a repair evident on the verso -- but no loss of content. Two other tears repaired unartfully but on the verso so not overly conspicuous. Some offsetting and other browning and light soiling. Still, overall, a handsome copy of this work interior- … [Click Below for Full Description]

BEAURAIN, Jean de.
Paris, 1741. 445 x 600mm. Three maps relating to the British attack on Cartagena in April 1741, under Vice-Admiral Edward Vernon: the sea routes from England to the Americas; a plan of Cartagena Bay; and a plan of Cartagena itself. Four insets give details of the surrounding forts. Launched as part of the War of Jenkins' Ear (1739-48), the attack on Catagena was an attempt to dislodge the Spanish from their American possessions. The large British force was expecting an easy victory: with the fleet in place and some of the Spanish outposts overcome, Vernon sent Captain William Laws back to London with reports of his victory. Medals were struck showing Vernon taking the surrender of Spanish admiral Blas de Lezo, but soon afterwards horrifying news came from America. Vernon had failed to capture the city and had withdrawn to Jamaica, defeated by disease, particularly yellow fever. George II was appalled and ordered Robert Walpole to prohibit news of the disaster from being published. Despite this and the withdrawal of the celebratory medals from circulation, the government fell. The annotation at the bottom left refers to the map as "The place where the English were beaten on 20 April, 1741."

Gabriel DOPPELMAIER (1677-1750)
1741. Mappa lunare secondo Johannes Hevelius (sinistra) e Giovanni Battista Riccioli (destra). Striking pair of maps depicting the surface of the moon, based upon the models of Johannes Hevelius and Giovanni Battista Riccioli. The two spheres of the moon provide a comparative analysis of the topographical information and nomenclature of Riccioli and Hevelius. Between the two spheres is a model showing the phases of the moon, with the different lunar phases represented in the four corners of the image. The map is further embellished with cherubs using a telescope and Diana, the lady of the moon. In 1647 Johannes Hevelius, a brewer from Gdansk, published his Selenographia, the first treatise devoted entirely to the moon. The work included for only the second time a single map that showed all the features of the moon equally clearly--a composite view that pictured the Moon in a way it never appeared in reality, but was accurate in its placement of individual features. Hevelius was truly a remarkable man of science, who made his own lenses, constructed his own telescopes, observed the Moon on every clear night for several years, drew his observations, engraved them himself, and had the wealth to publish a sumptuous book at his own expense. In Selenographia , Hevelius presented graphical depictions of every conceivable phase of the Moon, as well as three large plates of the full Moon: the first showing the way … [Click Below for Full Description]

Friedrich der Große
Den Haag: Jan van Duren, 1741. FRIEDRICH DER GROSSE - L'ANTIMACHIAVEL Sehr rare Erstausgabe (1740). Besonders selten in diesem hervorragenden Erhaltungszustand. Keine Notizen, keine Risse im Ganzledereinband. Goldgeprägte Rückenverzierungen, marmorierter Vorsatz. Lediglich minimale Gebrauchsspuren. [Click Below for Full Description]

Copenhagen and Leipzig: Jacob Preuss, 1741. 8vo (168 × 96 m), pp. [ii] 388 with engraved frontispiece, folding map and 2 plates. Fine French eighteenth-century olive morocco gilt. Upper joint just starting, but unobtrusive. Neat inscription to upper forecorner of front free endpaper "Coll. perf. H. Drury. Harrow. 1822..." Modern bookplates of A.L. McLaughlin and Bent Juel-Jensen. An excellent copy of a work rarely found in such attractive condition. First edition. The Subterranean Voyage of Nicolas Klim is one of the classics of speculative and utopian fiction, written fifteen years after Swift's Gulliver's Travels and often compared favourably with that work. It is the first fully developed novel to be set in the earth's interior, a setting which has been utilised countless times in later science fiction. Klim, a poor student, falls through a hole in the earth just outside the Norwegian town of Bergen and finds himself on the inside of the earth's crust. He lands on the planet Nazar (which orbits a sun at the centre of the earth's cavity) where he finds a nation that lives according to the laws of reason and nature. The peasantry are considered very highly and therefore are the most distinguished class in the state; many of the highest offices are held by women, who are in every way equal to the men. Nazar presents an enlightened utopia, very much in the mould of the ideals of Montesquieu and Voltaire (who Holberg admired enormously) but Klim also travels to other states where the perfect state of society is not so fully developed or is perhaps degenerate, allowing a vivi … [Click Below for Full Description]

1741. Madrid. Manuel Fernandez. 4to, (205 x 145 mm). 16 ff., 99 pp., engraved folding map. Contemporary sheep, spine gilt with raised bands in six compartments, a little rubbed, gilt faded. Excellent copy, with the map perfectly preserved; overall a beautiful copy in its entirely genuine condition. - First edition of this early description of Guayaquil (Ecuador), which includes accounts of piracy in the Pacific ports by Drake and Capt. Morgan. TheCompendio is the earliest topographical and historical study of this area; it provides details of the region's products, commerce, flora and fauna, architecture, and shipbuilding. In the introduction the author discusses the importance of Guayaquil as one of the major ports of the Spanish colonies in America, mentioning the attacks of English pirates such as Drake and Morgan and the measures that had been taken to defend the ports.
