Set in roman, italic and 3 sizes of Tamil types, with the pages numbered in Tamil alphabetic numerals. Later 18th-century maroon sheepskin. Rebacked in red morocco, new endpapers.

      - Landwehr, VOC 701. Rare first edition of a Tamil translation of the Heidelberg catechism by the reverend Sigisbertus Abrahamsz. van Bronsveld, printed and published in Colombo, Ceylon for the Tamil-speaking Protestant congregation there, for schools and for missionary work. In 1741 the VOC's press in Colombo had printed Willem Konyn's Sinhalese translation of the Heidelberg catechism, but it had received disappointingly little use and Bronsveld hoped his own Tamil translation would meet greater success. The VOC had brought a printing press to Ceylon in 1732 to set up the island's first printing office together with the Dutch Reformed Church, the first book (a Sinhalese prayer book) appearing at Colombo in 1737, followed soon after by religious works in Tamil. A major impetus for setting up the press was the fact that after the Dutch wrested control of much of Ceylon from Portugal with help from the indigenous population in 1640, the Portuguese Catholic priests still retained a great deal of influence and were able to convert some Tamils and Sinhalese. The VOC saw this as a threat to its powerbase and economic position, which centred on the cinnamon trade. They therefore encouraged the Dutch Protestant Church to expand its missionary work, hoping it would curtail the Portuguese Catholic missionary work. With stains from former mildew (treated), mostly in the foot margin of the first few and last few pages. Otherwise in good condition. The binding has been rebacked as noted, but is otherwise good.

Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier, 1741 FIRST AMSTERDAM PRINTINGS OF 2 IMPORTANT PAPERS: CLAIRAUT ON STELLAR ABERRATION, THE FIRST DIRECT CONFIRMATION OF THE COPERNICAN THEORY with MAUPERTUIS & HIS OFFICIAL REPORT ON THE LAPLAND EXPEDITION TO MEASURE THE SHAPE OF THE EARTH. THE TRIPS CONFIRMED NEWTON'S DYNAMIC & SUPPORTED THE OBLATE SHAPE. 23 plates. Note that we offer the original, first Paris printing as well. Both the French astronomer Alexis Claude de Clairaut and the French mathematician Pierre Louis de Maupertuis were involved in 18th century efforts to determine the shape of the earth; both published their findings in the this volume. To many controversy over the shape of the earth seemed a test between differing systems of natural philosophy - Cartesian and Newtonian. Though Newton and Huygens were working from differing theories of gravity, each calculated Earth to be slightly flattered at the poles. Writing in Principia, "Newton had calculated from the Earth's rotational force at the Equator that its equatorial diameter should exceed its polar diameter by 0.44 per cent, or 27 km" (Hall "Revolution, 351). French astronomers, Cassini II among them, came to the opposite conclusion; with Cartesians, they believed the polar diameter of the Earth was the greater. The Cartesian argument stood for fifteen years until the French Royal Academy of Sciences questioned the reliability of using only local measurements to settle the matter. To resolve the debate, Anders Celcius proposed an expedition to prove that the Earth flattens at the poles as predicted by Newton. In 1736, the Academy sent two expeditions to measure the meridian at the poles (Maupertuis & Clairaut to Swedish Lapland) and one to the equator (La Condamine to Peru). Clairaut had studied the discovery of the aberration of light in 1725 by James Bradley; his discovery of the optical effect of the apparent motion of celestial objects is one of the most important in the history of astronomy. Clairaut realized that stellar aberration, caused by the motion of Earth in space and by the finite velocity of light, could be used on the expedition to correct observations of the motion of stars, thus aiding the accuracy of their data. But while Bradley discovered stellar aberration, he had not provided any proof, even theoretical Studying deeply, Clairaut was able to derive the proof and its underlying formulae from first principles; Maupertuis the used Clairaut's formulas. Clairaut then published his proof and the details of how it was applied in Lapland in this volume. While some have argued that Bradley's discovery "provided the first experimental confirmation of the motion of the Earth", in reality his work had not provided even a theory- only Clairaut's 1737 paper provided that. As a result, some argue that Clairaut's paper represents "the first direct physical confirmation of the Copernican theory" (McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia). Returning from Lapland, Maupertuis began to analyze the data he had amassed; his paper in this volume is the first printing of Maupertuis's official report to the French Academy. Announcing values for a distance of one degree along the meridian in France and Lapland, his research clearly supported Newton's hypothesis. "The message that the Lapland expedition brought home was clear: the length of a degree in Lapland was longer than the length of a degree in France… Maupertuis wrote: 'The degree on the meridian that cuts the Arctic Circle being larger than the degree on the meridian in France, the Earth is a steroid flattened at the poles.' Voltaire referred to Maupertuis as the 'flattener of the Earth and the Cassinis'" (Murdin, Full Meridian, 64). While Cartesians contested the results and pointed to errors, Maupertuis's conclusions ultimately held. CONDITION & DETAILS: Amsterdam: Pierre Mortier. 12mo. 23 plates. Full calf, 5 raised bands; gilt-lettered & tooled, red morocco spine label. Minor rubbing at the edges; very solidly bound. Clean & bright within. Near fine.

Mortier had a partnership with Johannes Covens I (1697-1774) and founded the map publishing company Covens & Mortier (1721-1866). Mortier, being French himself, had easy access to French cartographers such as De L'Isle, Sanson, Jaillot, de Fer and De Wit. Consequently, much of Mortier's business was built upon leveraging the sophisticated Dutch printing establishment to issue embellished high quality editions of previously contemporary French maps. In the greater context of global cartography, this was a significant advantage as most Dutch map publishes had, at this point, fallen into the miasma of reprinting their own outdated works. By contrast, the cartographers of France were producing the most accurate and up to date charts anywhere. Mortier's cartographic work culminated in the magnificent nautical atlas, Le Neptune Francois. Upon Pierre's death in 1711 this business was inherited by his widow. In 1721 his son Cornelius Mortier took over the day to day operation of the firm. Cornelius partnered with his brother-in-law Jean Covens to form one of history's great cartographic partnerships - Covens and Mortier - which continued to publish maps and atlases until about 1866.

Imperii Romano-Germanici in suos Status et Circulos divisi Tabula Generalis.

Artist: Homann Johann Babtiste d ; issued in: Nuremberg; date: d1741 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Perfect condition; - size (in cm): 47,5 x 55; - description: Detailed map shows total Germany with Bohemia, Silesia, Austria, The Netherlands and Swizerland with a decorative title cartouche. The Roman Empire was one of the largest in history, with contiguous territories throughout Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. In reality, Roman expansion was mostly accomplished under the Republic, though parts of northern Europe were conquered in the 1st century AD, when Roman control in Europe, Africa and Asia was strengthened. During the reign of Augustus, a global map of the known world was displayed for the first time in public at Rome, coinciding with the composition of the most comprehensive work on political geography that survives from antiquity, the Geography of the Pontic Greek writer Strabo. When Augustus died, the commemorative account of his achievements (Res Gestae) prominently featured the geographical cataloguing of peoples and places within the Empire. Geography, the census, and the meticulous keeping of written records were central concerns of Roman Imperial administration.; - vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724), Nuremberg, was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

         Chinese Letters.

London: for D. Browne, and R. Hett,, 1741. Being a philosophical, historical, and critical correspondence between a Chinese traveller at Paris, and his countrymen in China, Muscovy, Persia and Japan. Octavo (168 x 95 mm). Contemporary dark speckled calf, gilt ruled spine, red morocco label, two-line gilt border on sides, red speckled edges. Woodcut head- and tailpieces and initials. 20th-century bookplate of Robert Hayhurst, Lancashire retail chemist and discriminating collector of 18th century literature in contemporary bindings. Neat repair to top corner of front free endpaper. A very attractive copy, compete with half-title. First edition in English. "From Jean-Baptiste Boyer d'Argen's Lettres chinoises, Horace Walpole's Letters from Xo Ho, and Oliver Goldsmith's The Citizen of the World (1762), China was a literary tool to reflect and comment on domestic European affairs" (Ashley Eva Millar, A Singular Case: Debating China's Political Economy in the European Enlightenment, 2017, p. 68). Jean-Baptiste de Boyer, marquis d'Argens (1703-1771), was considered an ally by Voltaire and spent twenty-five years, as chamberlain, at the court of Frederick the Great. He "helped disseminate the skeptical ideas of the Enlightenment by addressing his polemical writings on philosophy, religion, and history to a popular readership" (Ency. Brit. online). "D'Argens, it should also be noted, had contributed to the image of pre-Petrine Russia as barbaric in his widely disseminated Chinese Letters" (Amanda Ewington, A Voltaire for Russia: A. P. Sumarokov's Journey from Poet-Critic to Russian Philosophe, 2010, p. 210). Reasonably well represented institutionally but uncommon commercially. A lovely copy of an important work.

Versuch an dem Menschen, In Vier Sitten-Briefen an Henrich St Jean, Grafen von Bolingbroke, über Die Natur und den Zustand des Menschen

Frankfurt: Franz Varrentrapp, 1741. 8vo (193 x 121 mm). [46], 191, [1] pp. Title in red and black with engraved publisher's device, text in French and German on facing pages in roman and gothic types, eight engraved illustrations, each printed twice, by Martin Tyroff after G. A. Koch, woodcut tail-pieces and passe-partout initial borders. Occasional very light foxing. 19th-century half sheep and marbled pastepaper, marbled edges (very worn). Provenance: 19th-century monogram stamp DG on title.*** A dual-language edition of Pope's Essay on Man, with the French verse translation of Jean-François Du Resnel du Bellay, translated into German by an anonymous poet. While both preserve the rhyme scheme, neither version adheres in any essential way to Pope's iambic pentameters. Following Pope's poem are additional poems by the Marquis de Racan (Honorat de Bueil), Regnier-Desmarais and Madame Deshoulières (née Antoinette du Ligier de la Garde). The engraved vignettes at the beginning and end of each of Pope's four epistles were designed by the Frankfurt portrait painter and miniaturist Georg Anton Koch, and printed (unusually) in both the French and German texts. The Nürnberg engraver Martin Tyroff was a master of book illustration, distinguished by the "softness of his modelling of faces, intelligent distribution of light and shadow, technical correctness, carefulness and tenderness" (Thieme-Becker). Lanckaronska and Oehler discerned a French influence in his work, appropriately for this edition. Packing much information into a small space, the vignettes open with the Creation (showing Adam at the center flanked by animals), pastoral scenes, a scholar in his library, knights and ladies, a monarch and his court amidst architectural splendor, the battle of Zeus and the giants, and an allegorical scene of plenitude. Pope's influence on German literature and even the German language was significant, but this translation contributed little to it. At this time France and the French language still dominated German culture, and knowledge of English was rare. Du Resnel's French translations of the Essay on Man and An Essay on Criticism were notoriously unfaithful: "To adapt Pope's two Essays to his French readers Du Resnel felt himself compelled to make many changes. Passages too harsh for the aesthetic French ear were entirely omitted, others were rearranged or expanded, and he occasionally found himself obliged to supply the necessary transitions which he felt were lacking in the original, so that the number of alexandrines in his version is more than half as large again as the number of pentameter lines in Pope. The German translator follows his French model very closely... Like his model, he uses the rhymed alexandrine and limits himself exactly to the number of lines in the French" (Heinzelmann p. 321). The present translation moreover appeared a year after the first German translation of the Essay on Man made directly from Pope's English, that of Barthold Heinrich Brockes, published in Hamburg. Our anonymous translator, who had already translated The Rape of the Lock from the French in 1739 (Der merkwürdige Haar-Locken-Raub des Herrn Pope...Dresden 1739), apologizes in his introduction for his lack of skill and ignorance of English, adding that had he known of Brockes' project earlier, he would not have undertaken his own poor translation.

First and only edition, in Latin, of the first official Swiss pharmacopoeia, with a preface by the Swiss anatomist and physiologist Albrecht von Haller in Bern, and an elaborate armorial frontispiece by Johann Georg Sturm. It takes its title almost word for word from the Wittenberg pharmacopoeia, first published in 1741. Although much of the information no doubt comes from that work, it is here presented very differently. The main text is divided into three parts: "Materiam medicam" gives an alphabetical list of medicinal plants and other ingredients, "Medicamenta simplicia et composita" gives instructions for preparing simple and compound medicines, arranged alphabetically by the names of the medicines, and "Syllabus medicamentorum" gives a classified list of the simple and compound medicines. With bookplate on pastedown. Some slight browning or foxing, a few leaves with small dark-brown spots, but otherwise in good condition and with generous margins. The binding is somewhat scuffed, with a small tear in the spine, and the tapes are broken at the inside of the front hinge. An extensive and important pharmacopoeia.

Landwehr, VOC 701.

Versuch an dem Menschen, In Vier Sitten-Briefen an Henrich St. Jean, Grafen von Bolingbroke, über Die Natur und den Zustand des Menschen.
