        Thesaurus Linguae Latinae

Basel: E. & J.R. Thurnis, 1740. Folios, 4 volumes. Bound in contemporary vellum. In very good condition. Presents nicely.Robert Estienne was a classical scholar and translator known for his typographical elegance. He published the remarkable Thesaurus Linguae Latinae in 1532 and twice the entire Hebrew Bible, one including the Commentary of Kimchi. In 1539, he received the distinguished titles "Printer in Greek to the king" and "royal typographer" (M'Clintock, 1880). Estienne made the Parisian establishment famous through his enhanced editions of classic grammatical works and textbooks, such as the reformer Philipp Melanchthon's. Estienne can be seen therefore as not merely a prolific religious and classic scholar but an advocate in the case for humanism.

To which is prefixed, a Short Account of her Life, Character, and other Prophesies, with their Proper Explanations

London: Printed for F. Noble, 1740. First Edition, [22],[2]pp., with the final advert leaf, engraved frontispiece, lightly soiled, disbound. "Mother Shipton was Ursula Southill (or Sowthiel, or Southiel), the incredibly ugly daughter of Agatha Southill, known locally herself as a powerful witch. She is supposed to have been born in a cave at Dropping Well, Knaresborough, Yorkshire, in 1488, and because of her unfortunate appearance and reputed powers, was widely rumoured to be the child of Satan. Sometime about 1512, she married a wealthy builder from York named Tobias Shipton. She soon attained considerable notoriety throughout England as "The Northern Prophetess," and her prognostications received great public attention, were printed in pamphlets, and were widely distributed."-James Randi, An Encyclopedia of Claims, Frauds, and Hoaxes of the Occult and Supernatural, 1995.

Catalogue des Livres de la Bibliotheque de feu Monseigneur le Marechal Duc d'Estrées

2 p.l., x, 239; 279; 146 pp.; 2 p.l., xii, 252; 187 pp. Five parts in two vols. 8vo, cont. calf (well-rebacked with the orig. spines laid-down, some browning), spines gilt, red morocco lettering pieces on spines. Paris: J. Guerin, 1740. The library of the Duc d'Estrées (1660-1737), was probably the largest private library in France of its time, comprising 52,000 volumes. The prices realized were low, no doubt depressed by the huge quantity of material offered. Although the Duc de Saint-Simon, perhaps somewhat maliciously, stated that his fellow-duke's vast library had been packed up in bales throughout his life, the library was a serious and scholarly one. Many of the books were purchased by La Vallière. This set has been priced throughout in a contemporary hand with running totals at the head and foot of each page. An author index was published twenty years later and is not present for obvious reasons. ❧ Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, cols. 455-57-"Le catalogue est d'ailleurs très-considerable; il offre près de 20,000 articles...on ne trouve guère dans cette vaste collection que des livres sérieux et de travail"-(& see the rest of his long note). Grolier Club, Printed Catalogues of French Books Auctions...1643-1830, 55. Guigard, II, p. 208. Peignot, p. 94. Taylor, Book Catalogues, p. 240. .

The History of His Own Time

London - Printed For The Editor, 1740 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Two leather bound volumes with gilt titles to the spine. Matthew Prior (July 21, 1664 September 18, 1721) was an English poet and diplomat. When Queen Anne died and the Whigs regained power, Prior was impeached by Robert Walpole and kept in close custody for two years (17151717). In 1709, he had already published a collection of verse. During this imprisonment, maintaining his cheerful philosophy, he wrote his longest humorous poem, Alma; or, The Progress of the Mind. This, along with his most ambitious work, Solomon, and other Poems on several Occasions, was published by subscription in 1718. Prior's poems show considerable variety, a pleasant scholarship and great executive skill. The most ambitious, i. e. Solomon, and the paraphrase of The Nut-Brown Maid, are the least successful. But Alma, an admitted imitation of Samuel Butler, is a delightful piece of wayward easy humour, full of witty turns and well-remembered allusions, and Prior's mastery of the octo-syllabic couplet is greater than that of Jonathan Swift or Pope. His tales in rhyme, though often objectionable in their themes, are excellent specimens of narrative skill; and as an epigrammatist he is unrivalled in English. Condition: The bindings are tight and firm with all pages securely attached although the outer hinges are cracked on both volumes. There is some wear to the extremities including minor bumping to the corners, creasing to the spine and some slight rubbing to the leather. Internally the pages are clean and bright with the occasional handling mark and isolated spot. There are some water stains toseveral pages in Volume II. There are bookplates to the front pastedowns. Overall the volumes are in very good condition..

        Miscellaneous Poems and Translations.

York: Printed for C Ward and R Chandler: Second edition substantially enlarged 1740 - 8vo., xxxiv, 366pp., half-title present, wanting a blank flyleaf, bound in contemporary full panelled speckled calf, slightly rubbed on some extremities. A VG clean copy of this scarce work. (Foxon, p.820). Second edition (though not so designated); substantially enlarged, so as to be virtually a new book of 42 of the author's poems. Most of the poems from the author's collection published in 1731 are here reprinted. The most notable additions include "The Miller of Trompington, or the Reeve's Tale from Chaucer," and a translation of Books I-II of the Iliad, to accompany the version of Book III already published. The work displays a fairly wide range of interests. Included are a number of occasional poems and Biblical paraphrases, as well as "The Pleasures of Angling," translated from a Neo-Latin poem in the popular anthology Musae Anglicanae and accounts of the Fens. The 23-page list of subscribers includes many Oxford and Cambridge names, but the preponderance are from the Yorkshire area, including Laurence Sterne's uncle, Rev. Jaques Sterne, Archdeacon of Cleaveland and Precentor of York. Travers' old friend Thomas Hayter, by now Archdeacon and Prebendary of York, subscribed for six copies. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Dictionnaire Historique et Critique par Mr. Pierre Bayle. Cinquime dition

Amsterdam, Leiden, The Hague, Utrecht, 1740. Four folio volumes. The editors of "Printing and the Mind of Man" say, of Bayle and his Dictionnaire (no. 155): "Bayle, a Protestant philosopher, wrote his ?Historical and Critical Encyclopedia? in his voluntary exile in Rotterdam as an anti-clerical counterblast to Morri?s work, in order, as he put it, ?to rectify Morri?s mistakes and fill the gaps.? Bayle championed reason against belief, philosophy against religion, tolerance against superstition. In a seemingly detached way he posed arguments and counter-arguments side by side, restricting his most daring insinuations to the renvois (references) which supplemented the actual entries. For over half a century, until publication of the Encyclopdie, Bayle?s Dictionnaire dominated enlightened thinking in every part of Europe." With its four-volume Supplment: Chauffepr, Jacques George de, 1702-1740. Nouveau Dictionnaire Historique et Critique pour Servir de Supplment ou de Continuation au Dictionnaire Historique et Critique de Mr. Pierre Bayle... Amsterdam & La Haye, 1750-1756. Four folio volumes; first edition. Chauffepr, a Protestant philosopher and French exile in Holland much like Bayle, extended the Dictionnaire by adding material, some translated from English, some composed by himself. There are many more entries on scientists-- Leipniz, Mersenne, Galileo, Gallois. While not of the revolutionary importance of Bayle, Chauffepr reflects awareness of the importance of science, particularly English science, during the early eighteenth century. For Chauffepr see Cioranescu 18845. NUC 104: 658. These eight volumes, former property of the Providence Public Library, are handsomely rebound with red leather spines; condition of the interior is superb. stock#OB450 extra-oversize.

London, Printed for James Hodges..., 1740. Large 8vo, 205 x 123 mms., pp. viii, 513 [514 notice about entry on Quakers, 515 - 530 Index, 531 - 534 adverts], including half-title, contemporary calf, red leather label; corners worn, joints slightly cracked, top and base of spine chipped, but a reasonably good copy, with the contemporary autograph "G. Anderton" on the recto of the front free end-paper. Martin (1705 - 1782) was one of the 18th century's many polymaths, as skilled at explaining logarithms as he was in discussing history. His first published work, The Philosophical Grammar (1735) was a compendium of current knowledge about scientific matters, while this work, first published in 1737, gives the self-educating reader a useful overview of numerous topics in the arts. Despite his numerous skills and his wide-ranging activities and retailer of scientific apparatuses, he was made bankrupt in 1782.

        The Ruins of Rome

London - Lawton Gilliver, 1740 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A very scarce copy of this poem by JohnDyer. Dyer (1699 - 1757) was a painter and Welsh poet turned clergyman who maintained an interest in his Welsh ancestry. He was most recognised for Wordsworths sonnet, To The Poet, John Dyer, addressed to him, and for Grongar Hill, one of Dyers six early poems. Published in 1740, The Ruins of Rome was a philosophicmoralistic and descriptive poem of 545 lines based on a narrative of his ascent of the Palatine hill. Written inMiltonic blank-verse itchronicles the disappointing natural scenery of the naked Italian mountains and muddy rivers, as written in the opening lines. Featuring an engraved illustration to title page and some lovely decorative head and tail pieces and illuminated capitals elsewhere. First edition. Condition: Disbound. Pages remain attached though binding is a little tender in places. Otherwise in very good, bright condition for its age with a faint tidemark to lower margin of some pages and just the occasional mark or spot elsewhere. The author's name has been added in contemporary ink to the title page. Overall: GOOD.

        Peg Woffington - Original Miniature

original miniatuire portrait of the famous Irish actress painted directly onto porcelain and in its original wood and brass embellishment surround. Lovely item in very good condition. As a child of ten, she was recruited by an Italian rope dancer called Violante and played Polly Peachum in a Lilliputian production of The Beggar's Opera. She danced and acted at various Dublin theatres until 1740, when her success as Sir Harry Wildair in The Constant Couple led to her being given her London debut at Covent Garden; she became well known as an actress thereafter.Woffington enjoyed success in the role of Sylvia in The Recruiting Officer. She performed at Drury Lane for several years and later returned to Dublin, appearing in a variety of plays. Her most well-received performances were in comic roles, such as elegant women of fashion like Lady Betty Modish and Lady Townley, and breeches roles. She was impeded in the performance of tragedy by a harsh tone in her voice that she strove to eliminate. She lived openly with David Garrick, the foremost actor of the day, and her other love affairs (including liaisons with Edward Bligh, 2nd Earl of Darnley and MP Charles Hanbury Williams) were numerous and notorious. She became friend and mentor to the socialite/actress sisters, Elizabeth and Maria Gunning, and also shared the stage with the likes of Charles Macklin, Kitty Clive, and the tragedienne Susannah Maria Arne (then known as Cibber, following her marriage to Theophilus Cibber). Margaret Woffington in bed after her paralysis, circa 1758.She was made president (and the only female member) of Thomas Sheridan's Beefsteak Club in Dublin. She also educated and supported her sister Mary (usually known as Polly), and cared for and pensioned her mother. For whatever reason, Woffington left Garrick in about 1744 and moved to Teddington, into a house called Teddington Place. In 1754 she became the beneficiary of the will of the Irish impresario Owen Swiny. On 3 May 1757, she was playing the part of Rosalind in As You Like It when she collapsed on stage. She rallied, but would never act again, lingering with a wasting illness until 1760. She built and endowed by will some almshouses at Teddington, and was buried in St. Mary's Church, the parish church.
