The history of the heavens, considered according to the notions of the poets and philosophers, compared with the doctrines of Moses

London: J. Osborn, etc., 1740 Frontispiece to each volume plus 23 full-page plates in Volume I depicting inscriptions and carvings on ancient monuments. Contemporary polished calf, spine gilt in compartments with labels; a fine copy printed on thick paper, front board of Volume I a bit loose, fly-leaf detached. First edition in English of Histoire du ciel consideré selon les idées des poëts, des philosophes, et de Moïse (Paris, 1739), a rare and interesting treatise on the perception, both ancient and modern, of the universe, the creation, and the superiority of Moses’ cosmogony. In attempting to make modern science conform to Genesis, Pluche basically refutes the entire range of speculation on the origin of the world which conflicts with Mosaic cosmogony. In displaying the excellence of the physics of Moses, which supposedly conforms to the teachings of both history and experimental physics, he carefully explains his opposition theories proposed by those physicists which he termed “romans philosophiques.” He even includes an in-depth discussion of Newton’s work. The plates illustrate numerous Egyptian, Roman, and Greek mythological symbols. Many are signed by the popular Paris engraver, Jacques Phillippe Le Bas (1707-1783).& & Pluche (1688-1761), a teacher of humanities and rhetoric, was the leading French popularizer of natural theology. A controversial professor of rhetoric at Rheims, he became tutor in physics to, among others, the Earl of Stafford’s son. His most famous work, Spectacle de la nature (1732), was immensely popular as a text on both the Continent and in England, but brought him ridicule in Voltaire’s Candide for its philosophical optimism.&

Bewaldete Landschaft mit Haus und Spaziergänger.

The Hague: Vaillant & Nicolas Prevôt,, 1740. 2 volumes, octavo (157 × 91 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, brown morocco labels, spines lettered in gilt and gilt-tooled in compartments, red edges, marbled endpapers, armorial bookplates. Hinges lightly rubbed, otherwise an excellent, fresh, set. First edition. Pâris-Duverney and Deschamps refute Dutot's Réflexions politiques sur les finances et le commerce (1738) - a favourable consideration of John Law's paper currency system. Pâris-Duverney (the third of the four brothers Pâris, whose financial plans had been accepted under the Regency in 1716) had fallen into disgrace with the rise of Law, then risen again with Law's fall in 1720. In the Examen, he and Deschamps made a clear and tersely-argued refutation of Dutot and Law, warmly praising the Visa, and providing a detailed history of the Mississippi scheme and its collapse. "The different operations of this scheme are explained so fully, so clearly, and with so much order and distinctness, by Mr. Du Verney in his Examination of the Political Reflections upon Commerce and Finances of Mr. Du Tot, that I shall not give any account of them" (Adam Smith, Wealth of Nations, 1776, I, 385).

TWO DISCOURSES: A DEAD FAITH ANATOMIZED and THE SELF-JUSTICIARY CONVICTED AND CONDEMNED

Boston:: Reprinted by J. Draper, for D. Henchman in Cornhill,. 1740. First combined edition of these two scarce works which were first published in 1697 and 1707, respectively. [Evans 4560-61, but with linking title page; Sabin 46788-89]. The complete titles are DEAD FAITH ANATOMIZED: A Discourse on the Nature, and the Danger, with the Deadly Symptoms of a Dead Faith, and THE SELF-JUSTICIARY CONVICTED AND CONDEMNED: Or, A Discourse Concerning the Difficulty and Necessity of Renouncing Our Own Righteousness. Pastor Samuel Mather (1651-1728), a cousin of Cotton Mather, is credited with healing a 10-year break in the Congregationalist First Church of Windsor (the oldest Congregational church in Connecticut) which had resulted in the formation of a separate Presbyterian Party of Windsor. This was surely no mean feat. Text pages are darkened, stained, occasionally torn and often edgeworn but intact and wholly readable. Freshly rebound in quarter leather with marbled boards. Only one copy of this combined edition has appeared at auction and that was in 1977.

        Schat-Kamer van Verscheyde Geschriften .

      - Amsterdam, without date and printer (about 1740). 18 leaves (including title). Oblong 4to. Bound in marbled paper. Despite a clumsy attempt of calligraphy on the verso of the second leaf a fine copy. Third issue of the third book of Ambrosius Perling. This master calligrapher was born in Utrecht in 1657 or 1658 and became a citizen of Amsterdam in 1683. He kept a boarding school where calligraphy was taught and died in 1718. The first issues of the books written by Perling were published at his own expenses, the later ones were published (as in this case) by members of the family De Broen, engravers and publishers in Amsterdam. Ambrosius Perling reached a high fame during his lifetime as the last writing master who could hold in honor the calligraphic tradition of the Dutch republic. De Broen advertised his scripts as produced by "the jewel of the writing masters" and in fact the fame of Perling as unsurpassed calligrapher lasted well into the XIX century, both in Holland and abroad. Especially in England the influence of Perling was great. S. Morison in his introduction to the book of Heal on the history of calligraphy in England stresses the important rà le played by Perling alongside the Frenchmen Barbedor and Matherot. "While XVIth and early XVIIth century Italian handwriting had still been formed in a rather compressed and angular manner, the Dutch masters developed a broader and more rounded variant which, so far as writing line is concerned, was written at a wider sloping angle. This hand, which could be written more quickly, was imitated and developed further by a number of English masters ." (Croiset van Uchelen). Specimens of Perling's writing were reproduced by English masters as Snell, Champion and Bickham. Also in Spain Perling's influence was felt, as demonstrated by the insertion of a letter by him in the manual of Servidori (1787). This suite corresponds to the issue IIIb of this book in the Perling bibliography attempted by Croiset van Uchelen. The names of the engravers are G. and J. De Broen and the plates are disposed mostly according to Croiset's description, with two inversions. The first edition of the Schat-Kamer was published in 1685 and comprised only 17 leaves. [T. Croiset van Uchelen (The writing master Ambrosius Perling in: Quaerendo, 26(3)) pages 167-197; compare Bonacini 1401-1403, quoting respectively an edition without date which he did not personally see, the first edition and a later edition (dated by him as about 1724, but containing only 17 leaves) and Kat. Berlin 5031 for the first edition]

[Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

De' Crostacei e degli altri Marini Corpi che si truovano su' Monti. Libri Due

Engraved vignette on title, engraved head-piece & initial, & eight folding engraved plates (two frayed at fore-edge slightly affecting images). 7 p.l., 452 pp. Large 4to, cont. vellum over boards. Venice: S. Monti, 1740. First edition of the author's best-known and most controversial work. Moro (1687-1764), "was interested in how fossil-bearing rock came to be made into mountains, and he stressed the importance of fire and heat...Moro believed that most mountains and islands were raised by volcanoes, and he even thought that many stratified rocks had igneous origins. His most original insight consisted of a realization that there are two kinds of mountains, Primitive and Secondary, of different age and composition. This distinction, suitably elaborated, later became the cornerstone of historical geology."-Ashworth & Bradley, Theories of the Earth 1644-1830 (Linda Hall Library: 1984), 20. Very good copy. ❧ D.S.B., IX, pp. 531-34. Zittel, p. 32. .

Neraïr et Melhoé, conte ou histoire. Ouvrage orné de disgressions

Paris: Chez rue a l'enseigne, 1740. Two volumes, small octavo; contemporary French mottled calf, spines gilt n compartments with double labels, some wear to extremities. Very scarce: the probable first edition of this utopian romance, which is missed by most of the standard bibliographers. This strange mix of the utopian and the fairy-tale is set on the Island of Zinzinard three thousand years ago. Showing a very strong awareness of precedents in the imaginary voyage, Zinzinard is set mid way between Utopia and the land of the Sevarambes. Recent research by Ray Howgego has deepened our understanding of the history of this work: the author is thought to have been Henri Barthélemy de Blanes (c.1707-1754) was born in the Auvergne and was mestre de camp of a cavalry regiment; nothing more is known of him, our only source of information being a passing mention in volume 47 of Charles-Joseph Mayer's, Le Cabinet des Fées (1786). However, authorship of Neraïr et Melhoë remains uncertain, and more than twenty-five years were to pass before any name would be associated with the book, beginning with Catalogue des Livres provenans de la Bibliothèque de M.L.D.D.L.V., vol. 2 (Paris, 1767). The recently published Correspondance de Madame de Graffigny: 23 octobre 1744 - 10 septembre 1745 contains several references to the book, but Françoise de Gaffigny, novelist and playwright, laments her ignorance of the author, stating only that he is 'a friend of Ponteval' [Antoine de Fériol, comte de Pont-de-Veyle]. An alternative attribution frequently made to the theatre historian Claude Parfaict (1701?-1777) seems unlikely. Parfaict wrote nothing of a similar nature, and it appears that the sole source of this perpetuated mis-attribution is a librarian's note in the Catalogue des Livres de la Bibliothèque de Feu M. de Lamoignon, published in 1791. The unusual imprint of the work, together with the relatively incomplete listings available, has led to some confusion over both dates and authorship. The original date of publication is unknown, the publisher's imprint telling us only that it was in 'l'an de l'âge de l'auteur, LX' which itself throws suspicion on De Blanes who died at forty-seven. Le Cabinet des Fées dates the book to 1759, but the Graffigny correspondence clearly indicates that the book was in widespread circulation around 1744, which is probably closer to the date of publication. The journal Die Neue Europäische Fama first lists it in 1746. A now very rare German translation appeared at Bremen and Leipzig in 1747 as Der Stutzer nach der Mode [the follower of fashion?], and a second French edition of two volumes in one can be dated precisely to 1748. Another edition of two volumes in one was printed under the title Le Miroir, ou histoire griguenodine with the false imprint 'Venise' [Venice]. It is known that in 1749 all copies of this "Venise" edition were seized by the state and the bookseller Vente imprisoned in the Bastille. Any remaining copies, only two of which could be found, are overstamped with a government 'health warning'. It is also significant that the 1748 edition was printed in duodevicesimo (18o), which is usually a fair indication that the book had by then gone 'underground'. With the bookplate of Robert Garrisson.

Relation du Voyage Mysterieux de l'Isle de la Vertu, a Oronte

Mons: chez Gaspard Migeot, 1740. Duodecimo, contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine chipped at base but a very good copy. Mexican Bishop and the Land of Virtue. Attractive copy of a rare work, with a Belgian imprint, relating the "mysterious voyage" to a "Land of Virtue". First published in Rouen in 1684, this rare spiritual romance is an educational novel written as an allegorical voyage to the imaginary island of 'Virtue' on the River Orontes, the chief Syrian river, and the standard route to Egypt since antiquity. The island proves to be a peaceful religious utopia, presented as a model for the reader. The work is attributed to Palafox y Mendoza (1600-1659), a Spanish bishop and writer, who was a Viceroy in New Spain (in Mexico) in 1642. His attempts to improve conditions for Native Americans led to clashes with the Jesuits and his ultimate excommunication. Attempts to have Palafox y Mendoza beatified were routinely blocked; in fact it was only in March 2010 that Pope Benedict XVI finally approved a miracle, and Palafox y Mendoza's beatification is now expected. This was a popular work over the next century. This has been considered the third edition, but may in fact be the sixth or seventh; whatever the case, this provincial edition is very rare. With an old note "très rare" and the contemporary ownership inscription of a jeweller: "ce present livre appartient à moy Bouchard, orfevre…
