The Nature and Laws of Chance.

London: 1740. - With the publication of this book, Thomas Simpson (1710-1761) took on one of the leading mathematicians of his day, Abraham de Moivre (1667-1754). The second, significantly expanded version of de Moivre's Doctrine of Chances had appeared in 1738. In The Nature and Laws of Chance Simpson wrote approvingly of De Moivre, but claimed to have investigated two problems in probability for which the latter had given only the results. This sparked a feud between the two mathematicians, which was intensified by Simpson's publication of Annuities and Reversions (1742), which suggested some improvements on De Moivre's Annuities on Lives (1728). De Moivre accused Simpson of borrowing from De Moivre's own mathematical work, a charge which was answered by De Moivre in an appendix to Annuities and Revisions. The controversy over Simpson's originality has remained an issue into modern times, with De Morgan quite admiring and Pearson (History of Statistics in the 17th and 18th Centuries) much less so, although acknowledging Simpson's contributions as a writer of mathematical texts and an eponymous originator of formulae in trigonometry and astronomy. Contemporary calf, sturdily rebacked, new endpapers. Some light browning, as usual. Faint ink signature on title. A good, clean copy of Simpson's very scarce second book. First edition.         Usages de l’analyse de Descartes, pour découvrir, sans le secours du calcul differentiel, les propriétés, ou affections principales des lignes géométriques de tous les ordres.

Paris: Briasson 1740 - FIRST EDITION, four folding plates, pp. xxvi, 457, [3], 8vo, contemporary French calf, spine gilt with red lettering-piece, marbled endpapers, red edges, spine ends and corners repaired, good De Gua’s first treatise (1740) ‘contributed to the rise of the theory of curves in the eighteenth century and partially inspired the subsequent works of Euler, Cramer, A.P. Dionis du Séjour and M.B. Goudin. The fame of this work led to de Gua's election to the Royal Academy of Sciences as adjoint geometer on 18 March 1741, replacing P.C. Le Monnier. The principal aim of this work, inspired by both Descartes’s Géométrie and Newton’s Enumeratio linearum tertii ordinis, was to develop a theory of algebraic plane curves of any degree based essentially on algebra. Nevertheless he drew on infinitesimal methods in order to simplify various calculations and recognized that their use is indispensable, particularly for everything involving the transcendental curves’ (René Taton in DSB).

[Manuscript Indenture Signed]: Bennet Bard and Anthony Woodward (October 6, 1740)

(New Jersey). (1740). Manuscript Indenture Signed by Bennet Bard, made for Anthony Woodward, "Cloath Dresser," on one sheet of laid paper measuring approximately 12.25" x 15" unfolded. Dated October 6, 1740. Signed by two witnesses: James Johnston and John Bunting. Sets forth the terms and conditions of Woodward's three-year indenture to Bennet Bard, Esq., of the City of Burlington, in the Western Division of the Province of New Jersey. A few tiny tears to the corner folds, short sections of the horizontal creases have been neatly reinforced with Japanese paper on the blank verso, about very good. A Colonial era document from the noted Bard family of New Jersey and New York. Bennet Bard, the eldest son of Huguenot immigrants, inherited and acquired extensive tracts of land in Burlington county. As detailed in this document, Anthony Woodward entered into a three year contract "in Consideration of the Rents, Covenants, Conditions & Agreements herein Ascertained" to live and work at a saw mill on one of these tracts. Little else is recorded about Woodward. Bennet Bard served as Sheriff of nearby Hunterdon county in 1736, but he was removed from office after being found guilty of "divers notorious Barratrys Extortions and other malversions in his Office, and of Cruelly and unjustly Using and Abusing the Prisoners in his Custody." In 1745 and 1750 respectively, Bennet published notices in the Pennsylvania Gazette and New York Gazette, offering rewards for a "run away Mulatto Spanish Slave, named George," and run away "Irish Servant Man named, Peter Garagan." Clearly not one of the more beloved Bards (his younger brother John and his son Samuel were both celebrated physicians), but a notable Colonial personage nonetheless. New Jersey Colonial Documents pp. 532-33. .

A Single Plate, Tabula III from Tabulae sceleti et musculorum corporis humani.

[Leiden Joannem & Hermannum Verbeek 1740] - From the first edition of one of the greatest of all Anatomical Atlases. Tabula V, which features a human skeleton in a three-quarter view and seen from the rear is portrayed in a walking motion with the left hand raised and extended. Elephant folio, ca. 620 by 475 mm, single folio sheet, now mounted with the use of non-evasive corner tabs and protected by mylar. Very well preserved, fully intact with only the most minor evidence of age. ONE OF THE MAGNIFICENT PLATES FROM "AMONG THE MOST ARTISTICALLY PERFECT OF ANATOMICAL ATLASES." Wandelaar placed his skeletons and musclemen against lush ornamental backgrounds to give them the illusion of vitality, using contrasts of mass and light to produce a three-dimensional effect. The most famous plate in the atlas depicts a skeletal figure standing in front of an enormous grazing rhinoceros, sketched by Wandelaar from the first living specimen in Europe, which had arrived at Amsterdam Zoo in 1741" (Norman). The plates in this large folio work, and in the four supplementary works in large folio with which it is bound, are unsurpassed for their cool, elegant aesthetic and scientific accuracy. They were drawn and engraved by Jan Wandelaer, a pupil of the engravers Jacob Fokema and Guillem van der Gouwen, and the painter Gerard de Lairesse, who prepared the drawings for Bidloo's atlas. Prior to working for Albinus Wandelaer worked for Friedrik Ruysch. Albinus, however, provided Wandelaar with the opportunity for the full expression of his talents as a draftsman and engraver. In an attempt to increase the scientific accuracy of anatomical illustration, Albinus and Wandelaar devised a new technique of placing nets with square webbing at specified intervals between the artist and the anatomical specimen and copying the images using the grid patterns. Wandelaer placed each figure in a carefully chosen landscape setting, and the artistic results are so pleasantly successful that the anatomical figures, although composed of many separate parts, appear to be actually stepping out of the picture.         Map / Chart Thames, Spanish Armada, Military History): Thamesis Descriptio Anno 1588. Roberto Adamo authore. Engraved from a copy drawn by Mr. Joseph Ames 8th April 1738 from the Original in Parchment.

      J. Pine 1740 - Very good condition, highly decorative chart with elaborate upper cartouche with armorial, lion and griffin. There is a lower cartouche, in the midline, with an English scale. This seems to be early color, on heavy laid paper, with nice margins, image measuring 15.75x26.5 inches. There are remnants of two small archival mounting stubs in the upper front corners, nowhere near the neatline and not constituting any serious visual distraction. This is a very uncommon chart from Pine's "The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords.", originally published in 1739 (this chart appeared a year later). The actual copyright date on this chart, in the right lower corner, is 1740. Pine's original publication had 10 sea coast chart, and this particular chart of the Thames was often missing, so this is a very uncommon and highly attractive item. Lord Effingham, commander of the British fleet that defeated the Armada, had commissioned Adams to produce this series of charts representing various battle phases. HC Vroom was commissioned to produce the original tapestry designs, which were woven by Francis Spiring of Harlem. Almost all the tapestries were burned in the Westminster Palace fire of 1834. London appears to the far right of the river chart, and there is a decorative 16 point compass rose just above the city location. The CD version of the DNB states: " In 1739 Pine published another work of great interest, entitled ‘The Tapestry Hangings of the House of Lords, representing the several engagements between the English and Spanish Fleets in the ever-memorable Year mdlxxxviii,’ with portraits, charts of the coasts of England, medals, &c. As these valuable tapestries, executed by H. C. Vroom to commemorate the defeat of the Spanish armada, were subsequently destroyed by fire, Pine's engravings, done from drawings by C. Lempriere, are of the greatest historical value."

A New Map of Great Britain

London: Thomas Bowles, J. Bowles &John King, 1740. Full contemporary colour example of Moll's fine map of the recently conjoined states of England, Scotland and Wales: Great Britain This great map of the recently united Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland) of 1707, exemplifies Moll's particular virtues as a mapmaker. It is drawn on a large scale and includes major roads with mileage between points. Never word shy, Moll includes a general outline of the method and mechanics of representation of the new Union, and in a separate place, a brief account of his reasons for making the map and of its unique features. There is an inset map of the Shetland Islands. The present map was part of Herman Moll's magnificent folio work, a New and Compleat Atlas. Moll was the most important cartographer working in London during his era, a career that spanned over fifty years. His origins have been a source of great scholarly debate; however, the prevailing opinion suggests that he hailed from the Hanseatic port city of Bremen, Germany. Joining a number of his countrymen, he fled the turmoil of the Scanian Wars for London, and in 1678 is first recorded as working there as an engraver for Moses Pitt on the production of the English Atlas. It was not long before Moll found himself as a charter member of London's most interesting social circle, which congregated at Jonathan's Coffee House at Number 20 Exchange Alley, Cornhill. It was at this establishment that speculators met to trade equities (most notoriously South Sea Company shares). Moll's coffeehouse circle included the scientist Robert Hooke, the archaeologist William Stuckley, the authors Jonathan Swift and Daniel Defoe, and the intellectually-gifted pirates William Dampier, Woodes Rogers and William Hacke. From these friends, Moll gained a great deal of privileged information that was later conveyed in his cartographic works, some appearing in the works of these same figures. Moll was highly astute, both politically and commercially, and he was consistently able to craft maps and atlases that appealed to the particular fancy of wealthy individual patrons, as well as the popular trends of the day. In many cases, his works are amongst the very finest maps of their subjects ever created with toponymy in the English language. Furthermore, Moll is one of the few mapmakers who merits the term "Innovative". English mapmakers prior to Moll tried to imitate Dutch maps as nearly as possible, whereas Moll seems to have largely disregarded Dutch precedents. Removing all the Baroque stylistic elements, Moll replaced decoration with things that interested him about the places depicted, either pictorially or verbally. And he was right to do so. His notes and illustrations are more interesting than the putti and mythical gods of the late Dutch maps. Dictionary of National Biography. Engraved with full, period colouring, two sheets joined, both sheets with creases center folds, Several long, not obtrusive creases toward bottom of map.

A New Map of the British Empire in America

Amsterdam 1740 - (four joined sheets)Original outline color; fine condition with strong impression. In fine, museum-quality frame. A superb example of the first large-scale map of the English colonies in North America. When originally issued on an enormous scale of 20 sheets in 1733, it was a semi-official work in behalf of the Lord Commissioners of Trade and Plantations to aid in the administration of the American colonies. This finely engraved and exact Dutch edition made the map available in a more manageable, four-sheet format. The Popple was also the first English map to name all the original thirteen colonies. Of particular importance in this regard, it was one of the first maps to show Georgia. Perhaps more than any other earlier map, the Popple map graphically brought home to English colonial administrators an appreciation of the vast territory at stake in the coming conflict with France. The map¿s unique graphic style, in which topography is expressed in very dense detail, further contributes to the sense of the unclaimed vastness of North America. Cartographically, the map was of considerable influence. For example, its distended shaping of the Florida peninsula is seen on numerous maps in the following decades.

Travelogues written by Europeans visiting Palestine after that period point to a shift in Europe's relationship to the region. Where medieval pilgrims had often wept or gone into trances upon their arrival in Jerusalem, modern European visitors observed with curiosity what was before their eyes. They were traveling for pleasure and for cultural experiences; tourism was gradually replacing pilgrimage as a motive for visiting Palestine. By the end of the seventeenth century quite a few European tourists had already been to Jerusalem. The most famous among them was Henry Maundrell, the author of the book A Journey from Aleppo to Jerusalem in 1697. The book would prove to be one of the most popular books about the East for centuries to come. By 1749 seven editions in different European languages had appeared, and sections of the book continued to appear in collections of travel writings published both in the eighteenth and the nineteenth centuries.[2] The lure of printed books in Europe and its American colonies might partially account for the initial popularity of A Journey, but it can not explain why the book remained popular for the more than two centuries after its original appearance. The latter could be explained by the fact that the book is the narrative of a tourist rather than that of a pilgrim, unlike the many other Palestine travel narratives that appeared before it. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Nova & Accuratissima Totius Terrarum Orbis Tabula Nautica . . . per Edm. Halley . . .

Amsterdam 1740 - Fine original color; few fold reinforcements, light stains, marginal mends, still excellent overall; archivally mounted with a silk mat in a white gold leaf frame. Scarce. A large, strikingly designed world map by the great English scientist, Edmund Halley, after whom the famous comet was named. It was the first map to delineate magnetic declination (i.e. compass variations resulting from the earth¿s magnetism) across most of the surface of the globe. Halley intended this chart to be used at sea by navigators, and as Whitfield points out, ¿a version of this chart was part of the navigator¿s essential equipment.¿ In fact, no previous world map contained as much navigation-related data as this one. It also depicts prevailing winds and ocean currents, in addition to the aforementioned compass variations. Cf. Whitfield, P. The Image of the World, p. 110.

L'Amerique Dressée sur les Relations les plus Recentes rectifiées sur les dernieres observations

Chez l'Auteur Rue St. Jacques au dessus de la Rue des Mathurins a lensgne. de la Place des Victoires, Paris 1740 - First state of a rare and monumental wall map of the Americas by a great French master of cartography. Jean-Baptiste Nolin was one of the most accomplished and certainly the most ambitious French cartographer of his era. He founded what ultimately became a family empire in Paris in the 1680s. Exceptionally, he managed to marry superlative decorative ornamentation with the serious objective of producing maps that reflected the most advanced rendering of geographical detail. The artistic élan of his compositions evinced a style that preserved the rhetorical ambitions of the Baroque ethic, while anticipating the playful elegance of the Rococo period. His masterpieces, many like the present wall map, were monumental in scale and represented Nolin's desire to overwhelm his competition in what was a very challenging market. Highly controversial, Nolin occasionally described himself as "the Engraver to the King," an appointment of which the royal court was curiously never apprised. In his endeavour to include the very latest geographical details on his maps, he seldom hesitated to acquire information from his eminent contemporaries, most notably Guillaume De L'Isle and Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, Jean-Dominique Cassini and the Sieur de Tillemon. At times these rivals were not appreciative of Nolin's adoption of their intellectual property, and De L'Isle successfully sued Nolin for plagiarism in 1705. However, the larger-than-life Nolin always seemed to transcend these challenges, leaving a thriving enterprise to be taken up by his son. The present map was created in 1740 by Jean-Baptiste Nolin II, largely based on earlier maps produced by his father. This work ambitiously endeavours to depict the Americas in the most up-to-date geographic form, generally borrowing from the most authoritative sources. Ironically, it was the senior Nolin's desire to acquire the most accurate information that caused him to propagate one of the eighteenth-century's greatest cartographic myths. By this time, South America had been quite thoroughly explored, however, the Pacific northwest and the adjacent interior areas of North America remained largely unseen by European eyes. The only prominent feature present in this terra incognita is the mythical Mer de l'Ouest, that sees the Pacific protrude dramatically into the continental landmass. The senior Nolin was the first cartographer to put this detail into print, his campaign of corporate espionage having uncovered a manuscript map by De L'Isle which depicted the sea. This incident was one of the key pieces of evidence that won De L'Isle's suit against Nolin. Although the Mer de l'Ouest is dramatically smaller here than in its original form (and is unlabelled in this map) it sustains a fascinating myth. The map is an artistically virtuous composition on a monumental scale, the image being surrounded by thirty vignettes that depict the dramatic historical events that shaped the founding of the French and Spanish empires in the Americas. Each vignette is set within an elaborate baroque frame of a unique design, accompanied by descriptive text. The extensive text along the lower margin entitled "Description Géographique de l'Amérique" places this important map into its greater social and historical context. The map is further enhanced by a large decorative title cartouche, magnificently framed by period rocaille motifs, that depicts French Jesuits ministering to the Indians. A small vignette below the cartouche shows beavers at work, a popular motif on eighteenth-century maps of America The map also features a decorative detail that represents a social commentary on contemporary European attitudes towards the indigenous peoples they encountered in the New World. The scene occupying the lower-left of the main image depicts Mars, the god of war, capriciously watching over two Europeans who are firing rifles onto a group of native Americans, who themselves are engaging in macabre acts of cannibalism.         Thesaurus Linguae Latinae.

      E. & J.R. Thurnis, Basel 1740 - Folios, 4 volumes. Bound in contemporary vellum. In very good condition. Presents nicely. Robert Estienne was a classical scholar and translator known for his typographical elegance. He published the remarkable Thesaurus Linguae Latinae in 1532 and twice the entire Hebrew Bible, one including the Commentary of Kimchi. In 1539, he received the distinguished titles "Printer in Greek to the king" and "royal typographer" (M'Clintock, 1880). Estienne made the Parisian establishment famous through his enhanced editions of classic grammatical works and textbooks, such as the reformer Philipp Melanchthon's. Estienne can be seen therefore as not merely a prolific religious and classic scholar but an advocate in the case for humanism.
