"[Bickham] was principally famous in music circles for his two illustrated folio volumes The Musical Entertainer, first issued in fortnightly parts, each containing four plates, from January 1737 to December 1739. The 200 plates are songs, headed and surrounded with pictorial embellishments illustrative of the song., and engraved in the style of and even copied directly from Gravelot and Watteau. This work was the first of its kind to be published in England and quickly produced imitators such as Lampe’s British Melody, engraved by Benjamin Cole."A second edition, corrected by Lampe, was also issued in parts (1740–41), and a third, printed from the original plates, appeared in 1765, issued by John Ryall. Other musical works engraved by Bickham include Songs in the Opera of Flora (1737), An Easy Introduction to Dancing (1738) and the frontispiece for Simpson’s The Delightful Pocket Companion for the German Flute (c1745)." Frank Kidson et al in Grove onlineThe Musical Entertainer is considered one of the finest 18th century illustrated books. Complete copies of this monumental work are very rare. Tall folio. Contemporary dark brown calf. 1f. (illustrated title) + 100ff., each printed on one side only, with large, elaborate vignettes to upper portions of each illustrating the song, signed in the plate by J.         The Twelve Months in allegory. Beautiful fashionably-dressed young women representing the months of the year, set within an appropriate interior or landscape and accompanied by the relevant signs of the Zodiac]

Jeremias Wolff, Augsburg 1740 - A rare and very beautiful complete series with spectacular contemporary hand-colouring. Individual prints from this series are sometimes encountered, generally uncoloured, but to find a complete set, in excellent condition with stylish contemporary hand-colouring, is extraordinary: this is the first such set we have encountered in over 35 years. Each image features a beautiful and fashionable young woman engaged in a pursuit that is appropriate for the month represented: March finds her in the orangery pruning fruit trees ready for the spring; in April she is outside broadcasting seed; the heat of August finds her resting in the shade, her clothes loosened, taking a cooling drink; in September, she enjoys the fruits of the early harvest; October and she toasts the wine harvest, in November, she pauses during a day spent hunting. In addition to personifying each month, each image includes a reference to the applicable sign of the zodiac: sometimes these are straight-forward as, for instance, in December where the image includes a discarded piece of paper with a sea-goat (for Capricorn) on it. At other times the symbolism is less overt: Sagittarius, the archer centaur is implied by the entire hunting scene; the twin figures holding aloft a basket of flowers represent Gemini (the twins) in the image for May. Overall this series offers the unusual combination of real rarity, excellent condition and a strong series of images that can be enjoyed on many levels and are suitable for many different locations. Cf. OCLC 13788184 (a 'sammelband' in the Boston Athenaeum, probably including this series). Copper-engraving by Engelbrecht after Decker, contemporary hand-colouring. Excellent condition with some expert restoration to margins. Sheet size: 14 x 9 inches approx. Framed.

OPTICE: SIVE DE REFLEXIONIBUS, REFRACTIONIBUS, INFLEXIONIBUS ET COLORIBUS LUCAS, LIBRI TRES. LATINE REDDIDIT SAMUEL CLARKE, EDITION NOVISSIMA.

Marci-Michaelis Bousquet & Sociorum, Lausanne & Geneve. 1740 - All edges stained red. Spine labelled near top. Half-title page present. Portrait frontispiece. Title-page with vignette printed in red and black. Errata page at end of text. Engraved head and tail pieces. Illuminated first letters of sections. Old water-staining to bottom of first 30 pages (See photo). Twelve fold-out plates, all intact and clean. This treatise on optics was first published in English in 1704, the first Latin edition published in 1706. Sir Isaac Newton (1643-1727) was an English physicist, mathematician, astronomer, alchemist, philosopher, and theologian. He is most well-known for his "Philosophiae Naturalis Principia Mathematica" published in 1687, laying the ground work for most classical mechanics. He built the first practical reflecting telescope, and he developed a theory of color based on the observation that a prism decomposes white light into many colors that form the visible light spectrum. He expanded on these theories in "Opticks". We find 20 libraries worldwide holding the book. ABPC shows a total of 7 copies sold at auction in the past 32 years. [ii, half-title, blank, frontispiece and title-page, xxxii, 1-363, errata, 12 folding plates, ii]. Collated complete 10 May 2011. See "Printing And The Mind Of Man", 172.

Jean-Baptiste Nolin was one of the most accomplished and certainly the most ambitious French cartographer of his era. He founded what ultimately became a family empire in Paris in the 1680s. Exceptionally, he managed to marry superlative decorative ornamentation with the serious objective of producing maps that reflected the most advanced rendering of geographical detail. The artistic élan of his compositions evinced a style that preserved the rhetorical ambitions of the Baroque ethic, while anticipating the playful elegance of the Rococo period. His masterpieces, many like the present wall map, were monumental in scale and represented Nolin's desire to overwhelm his competition in what was a very challenging market. Highly controversial, Nolin occasionally described himself as "the Engraver to the King," an appointment of which the royal court was curiously never apprised. In his endeavour to include the very latest geographical details on his maps, he seldom hesitated to acquire information from his eminent contemporaries, most notably Guillaume De L'Isle and Vincenzo Maria Coronelli, Jean-Dominique Cassini and the Sieur de Tillemon. At times these rivals were not appreciative of Nolin's adoption of their intellectual property, and De L'Isle successfully sued Nolin for plagiarism in 1705. However, the larger-than-life Nolin always seemed to transcend these challenges, leaving a thriving enterprise to be taken up by his son. The present map was created in 1740 by Jean-Baptiste Nolin II, largely based on an earlier maps produced by his father. While the geographical depiction of most of the continent is quite assured for the time, this map is one of the eighteenth-century's most fascinating experiments in cartographic speculation. Published on the very eve of Vitus Bering's voyage to Alaska and eastern Siberia, this map shows that contemporary Europeans had no real concept of what lands might have occupied these regions. North America is thus shown as reaching down to a point just north of Japan. On the other side of the continent, an absurdly large Greenland looms closely over the northern coast of Siberia to a point past Nova Zemlya. On the main map the Mariana Islands, or Nouvelle Phillipines, adorn the Pacific in a configuration consistent with the account of the Jesuit explorer Paul Clain. Curiously, the inset in the upper right corner depicts a different rendering of the same islands as suggested in a Jesuit report of 1697. Nolin's work is an artistically virtuous composition on a monumental scale, the image being surrounded by thirty vignettes that depict various events from Greek, Roman, Jewish, Christian, and Islamic history. In turn, each vignette is set within an elaborate baroque frame of a unique design, accompanied by textual narratives. The extensive text along the lower margin is entitled "Description Géographique de l'Asie." The upper left of the main image is adorned with an especially resplendent cartouche, featuring Jesuit priests evangelizing to the diverse peoples of the continent. This wall map is one of the greatest subjects of the Nolins' legacy, not only being a masterful work of art and a fascinating image that tests the very limits of European geographical knowledge, but a vivid record of a dramatic transitional period in the history of cartography, and of society in general. Copper-engraved wall map, with original outline colour, of four joined sheets, surrounded by text and vignettes printed on separate sheets, backed onto old linen, with contemporary wooden rollers, overall in very good condition.

        Alfred: A Masque

London: Printed for A. Millar, 1740 First edition, first printing, with the original text for "Rule Britannia." Finely bound in modern quarter brown calf over light brown cloth by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, boards ruled in blind, spine lettered in gilt, printed on laid paper, half-title present. With a hint of light wear to the extremities, a few faint spots to the last few leaves of text, else fine. A near fine copy in a beautiful modern binding. Alfred is a masque, or a dramatic courtly entertainment, about Alfred the Great, King of Wessex from 871-899. Alfred, the only English king or queen known as "the Great," is best remembered as a young king who successfully defended Wessex from the invading Danish Vikings and began the unification process of Anglo-Saxon England by consolidating territorial gains. Alfred was first performed for Prince Frederick of Wales, son of King George II and the heir apparent of the British throne until his death in 1751, and his wife Princess Augusta at their country home in Cliveden on August 1, 1740. Thomson, a Scottish playwright, was a supporter of Frederick and the Hanoverian family, and intended Alfred to garner support for the prince by drawing on England and Scotland's common Anglo-Saxon heritage. Notably, this first edition contains the original text for "Rule Britannia" as the masque's finale. For the second edition published in 1751, the text for this song was significantly revised by Mallet (who claimed to be primary author of the 1740 text instead of Thomson), with three of the stanzas replaced with new lyrics.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine.

The Theodosian Code is an official compilation of all laws enacted since the reign of Constantine that was commissioned by Emperor Theodosius II in 429 CE. Completed in 438 CE, and ratified that year by the senate, it was the standard legal text of the empire, one that superseded all earlier codes. It would later exert enormous influence on the barbarians who assumed control of the Western Empire. The Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Franks, Lombards and Burgundians used it as the basis for their legal codes. First published in 1665, Godefroy's edition, which includes extensive commentary, was the first modern edition of the Codex. It remains a masterpiece of scholarship and erudition.       1740. Tomus I-(II). Gottingen, Vandenhoeck et Cunonis, 1740. 8vo. 2 volumes bound together in contemporary vellum. (xii),476; (viii),454 pp. First title printed in red and black. A fine copy. A detailed annotated bibliography on the history of philosophy by the noted Professor Burkhard Gotthelf Struve (1671-1738), who was appointed librarian at Jena in 1687. But, as Petzholdt writes, more of a literary history than a real bibliography and especially valuable for the study of the German school of philosophy. Jasenas, in 'a history of the bibliography of philosophy' says: "Several editions of Struve's bibliography were published during his lifetime; the one (fifth), which appeared after his death in 1740 and was edited by Ludwig Martin Kahle, is still extremely useful to the historians of philosophy" [Petzholdt p. 459, Jasenas, p. 55]

Wänskap och trohet i döden, eller den indianske printzessan Zaletta, tragoedia; i fem öpningar. I swänske rim författad, från engelskan. Af Andreas Hesselius americanus.

1740 - Stockholm, L. L. Grefing, 1740. 4:o. (4),80 pp. Sewn in later blue wrappers with a handwritten title on spine and some smaller stains on the rear wrapper. Uncut and partly unopened. A small but irksome stain on the title page. Some dampstains in the lower corners of a few pages and a tear in the lower margin on p. 11. From the library of Ericsberg. Klemming Sveriges dramatiska litteratur p. 81. A very free translation of Killigrew's "Ormasdes or Love and Friendship", from 1664. The translator Andreas Hesselius (1714-62), called himself "Americanus" as he was born in North America, the son of the priest of the Swedish congregation in Delaware. To this work he has added a few notes of his own, among other things about the American indian custom of tatooing their bodies and painting their faces. Hesselius came to Sweden in 1724 and for a while worked as a teacher of the English language at Uppsala university. He also unsuccessfully published a couple of satirical magazines. His main source of income however, was as a professional author of occasional poetry. By the mid 1750s, he had published more than 500 poems for weddings and funerals. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Lettre autographe signee.

Fortoiseau, 15. VIII. 1740.. 8 pages in-4..

Nader Shah Sacks Delhi, Capturing the Peacock Throne - and with It the Koh-i-Noor. 1740. Lisbon. Officina de Antonio Correa Lemos. In 4to (195 mm x 135 mm). 19 pp. Recent calf. Excellent good condition overall.First Portuguese edition; interesting eyewitness account of the shah of Persia?s campaign against the Mughal Empire, with a reference to the diamond-studded Peacock Throne. A Spanish translation was also published in 1740, but it lacks the list of booty and the letters at the end that appear in this version. This is one of the earliest references to one of the world´s most famous diamonds.Nader Shah (Tahmasp Qoli Khan), ruler of Persia from 1736 to 1747, was known as the second Alexander due to his military genius. This account describes his greatest campaign, against the Mughal Empire. Picking up after the Battle of Karnal in February 1739, Voulton describes how Nader Shah starved the Mughal army into submission, then gives a lively account (with much indirect discourse) of the treaty negotiations, polite exchanges of gifts, the failure of negotiations, and the peaceful occupation of Delhi by Nader Shah, with Mohammad Shah as his prisoner. Soon thereafter a rumor spread that Mohammad Shah had killed Nader Shah, and in a popular uprising some Persian soldiers were killed. Nader Shah, enraged, loosed his troops to sack the city. (Some sources reported that 200,000 residents were killed in a single day.) The account continues with the devastating effects of the massacre and Mohammad Shah?s capitulation to Nader Shah?s terms. The work also relates the banquet given by the King of Persia for the Mughal emperor [it was the other way about] with famous Persian dancers, and the negotiations for a peace treaty.A list of the spoils gathered in India by Nader Shah (pp. 16-17) includes "O Trono Imperial todo guarnecido de diamantes avaliado em 9 [courons]." This is the famous Peacock Throne of the Mughal rulers, which now became the famous Peacock Throne of the shahs of Persia. One of its diamonds was the Koh-i-Noor, which according to legend was named by Nader Shah, who exclaimed "koh-i-noor!" ("Mountain of light") when he saw it. The earliest known reference to the jewel by that name dates to 1739. An estimate of the total of Nader Shah?s booty is given on p. 17. Lockhart, writing ca. 1926, estimated the total value at £87,500,000. The volume ends with letters by Voulton of late 1739 that relay information from a Russian diplomat in Isfahan, reporting on Nader Shah?s failed siege of Babylonia (Baghdad), his embassy to Russia, his attempts to establish trade with Europe, and his promises to the pope that Christians in Isfahan and Yerevan (Armenia) will not be persecuted. As a military leader under Sultan Husayn, last of the Safavid rulers of Persia, Nader Shah (1688 or 1698-1747) drove out invading Russians and Turks; and then he deposed Husayn and reigned as shah himself. Having conquered enormous territories in the Middle East, he was briefly the most powerful ruler in the region, but notorious for his despotism, cruelty, and paranoia. Persian nobles assassinated him in 1747, and his empire disintegrated.Voulton, a deserter from the French army at Pondicherry, fled to the court of the Mughal Emperor, where he became court physician and a member of the privy council. He was apparently with the army after the Battle of Karnal and then in Delhi. The @Verdadeira e exacta noticia includes some details that do not appear in other contemporary accounts, such as the description of Nader Shah eating sweetmeats while he watched the massacre at Delhi.Lockhart points out that the errors of the Portuguese edition are reproduced and magnified in the Spanish, suggesting that the Portuguese edition is earlier. He speculated that the Portuguese was translated from Latin or Italian, but was unable to find a version in any other language; nor does OCLC list any.Provenance: Dukes of Palmela library, with their monogram beneath the ducal coronet stamped in purple ink on title page.         Wien die Weltberühmte Kayserl. Resid.
