London, 1738.relating chiefly to their antiquities and history. Collected upon the spot in several tours since the year 1723; and illustrated by upwards of forty copper plates, from original drawings; among which are the ruins of several temples, theatres, amphitheatres, triumphal arches, and other unpublish'd monuments of the Greek and Roman times, in Sicily, and the south of France. The author's Preface makes it clear that this work of 1738 is a continuation in which he confines himself to describing the antiquities and monuments of Sicily, Italy and France. Several reference works erroneously describe this as a second edition of the 1726 publication. London, H. Lintot. 1738. Text block tight and firm. A good working copy of a scarce set in a poor binding. John Durant Breval (1680 / 81?1738), was the son of a French immigrant Catholic priest who settled in England around 1660, converted to Protestantism and in 1674 was appointed a prebendary of Westminster Abbey. John Breval was educated at Westminster School and at Trinity College Cambridge achieving his M.A. in 1704. After a brief spell in the army, he became a professional writer of verse and stage entertainments, finally embarking in about 1720 on a career as travelling tutor to the sons of the nobility visiting France, Italy, Spain, Germany and Switzerland. (ODNB). In the first of our two volumes he describes Sicily and the whole of Italy north and south concentrating on the antiquities and ancient monuments in the major towns and cities, including Rome, Genoa, Florence, Venice, Turin and the Lakes. In the second volume he deals with the whole country of France, not just the south as announced in his title, again describing the antiquities of Paris, Versailles, Lyons, Marseille, Dijon, Strasbourg, Avignon, Orange and many smaller places. He also makes brief excursions to places in Switzerland and Germany just over the border that he had not covered in his earlier work of 1726. Paul Fourdrinier (1698?1758), engraver and printseller born in the Netherlands the son of French Huguenot refugees, studied architectural engraving in Amsterdam under Bernard Picart and later engraved the designs for many architectural books. He settled in London in 1719` and established premises there by 1727 trading in prints, maps and stationery. (ODNB). MORE IMAGES ATTACHED TO THIS LISTING. POSTAGE AT COST.

A Description of the Empire of China and Chinese-Tartary , Together with the Kingdoms of Korea, and Tibet

London: printed by T. Gardner for Edward Cave, 1738-, 1741. Two volumes, large folio, with 51 maps and plans (most folding) and 13 plates; some scattered foxing but a very good copy in original blind stamped calf, spines expertly restored in contemporary style, panelled in gilt between raised bands. The second, revised and best English edition of Du Halde on China. First English folio edition of du Halde's magnum opus on China, carefully translated with a new suite of finely engraved maps designed to improve upon those of the French original. This splendid folio edition took the place of the small four volume octavo translation which was hurried to the press following the magnificent French folio edition of 1735. In his lengthy preface, the publisher Cave claims to have improved upon du Halde's work in a number of respects, boasting better organisation and structure, clear and literal translation from the French, improved maps and a new standardised orthography of Chinese for European use. Löwendahl attributes the translation to William Guthrie and an Irish assistant who worked under Cave's scrutiny 'to give a faithful version of the Author's Sense in the fewest words, and to avoid a disagreeable style.' This edition did improve the standardisation of place names and proper nouns that marked du Halde's original (a result of its compilation from diverse missionary authors). By doing so it 'established the orthographic conventions by which Chinese has been represented in English until very recently' (DNB). Furthermore, Cave lavished great expense on having the maps reproduced in their entirety, checking and cross referencing place names and adding engraved notes from the relevant texts to illuminate the understanding of his readers. This task was accomplished by the prolific London engraver Emanuel Bowen who later in his career printed several North American surveys by James Cook. This is an extremely good copy of this handsome book, with the contemporary ownership inscription of Archibald Kennedy, a customs agent.

Anatomical lectures by William Shippen Junior M.D. . . . Manuscript notebook by Daniel De Benneville

      Philadelphia, 1781or after.
[Shippen, William, junior (1738-1808).] De Benneville, Daniel (1753-1827). Anatomical lectures by William Shippen Junior M.D. anat: & chirurg: profess: in the University of Pennsylvania. Manuscript medical commonplace book. 93 leaves. Philadelphia, n.d. [1781 or after]. 144 x 190 mm. Original boards, leather backstrip, worn, missing two-thirds of front cover restored. Upper half of first leaf extensively repaired replacing missing upper half, dampstain in lower portion of first leaf, first few leaves frayed, evenly toned throughout, but a good example of an 18th-century American medical manuscript, written in a neat and legible hand. Boxed.

Rare contemporary manuscript record of anatomical lectures given by William Shippen junior, the first systematic teacher of anatomy, surgery and obstetrics in the United States. Shippen never published his anatomical lectures (or any other medical works apart from his 1761 doctoral thesis), so that the only record we have of his teachings is contained in student notebooks like the one we are offering. Notebooks containing Shippen lectures are rare—OCLC records seven examples written between 1766 and the early nineteenth century, three at the University of Pennsylvania, two at the College of Physicians of Philadelphia (which Shippen helped to found), one at the National Library of Medicine and one at McGill University’s Osler Library (see Bibliotheca Osleriana 7635). Most of these examples have probably been in institutional collections since the 19th century.

Shippen, the son of physician and statesman William Shippen senior (1712-1801), obtained his medical degree at the University of Edinburgh. Shippen’s career as a professor of medicine began in 1762, when he started giving anatomical lectures in Philadelphia for medical students. In 1765, when John Morgan established the first medical school in the United States at the College of Philadelphia, Shippen joined the faculty as professor of anatomy and surgery. When the Pennsylvania state legislature created the University of the State of Pennsylvania in 1779, Shippen taught there as well, and in 1791, when the University merged with the College of Philadelphia to form the University of Pennsylvania, Shippen was appointed to the University’s chair of anatomy, surgery and midwifery. Shippen also served as a physician in the Pennsylvania Hospital and held important medical posts, including Physician-in-Chief of the American Army, during the American Revolutionary War.

Our notebook, which records the first two lectures in Shippen’s anatomy course, was written by Dr. Daniel de Benneville, the eldest son of physician and Universalist preacher George de Benneville (1703-93). De Benneville received his first medical training from his father; when the Revolutionary War broke out he served as a surgeon in the 12th (some sources say 13th) Virginia regiment of the Continental Army. It is entirely possible that De Benneville and Shippen encountered each other during their military service. De Benneville retired from Army service in 1781, and it is likely that he began attending Shippen’s lectures at the University of Pennsylvania sometime after this date. Shippen virtually ceased lecturing at the University after the death of his son in 1798; this date makes a likely end point to the period during which De Benneville would have studied anatomy under Shippen.

Apart from the Shippen lectures De Benneville’s notebook contains several detailed case histories, the first of which was “under Dr. Morgan’s care”; this may be a reference to John Morgan. Also in the notebook are numerous recipes for medical compounds, accounts of cures performed by other physicians, a long essay on puerperal fever, a multi-page outline of Cullen’s Nosology (1769), notes on the treatment of pregnant and laboring women, and a “Table of Attraction” recording the actions of various medicines. Altogether, De Benneville’s notebook represents a complex and extensive record of an American doctor’s experience in the late 18th century. Jus ecclesiasticum universum brevi methodo ad discentium utilitatem explicatum seu lucubrationes canonicae in quinque libros Decretalium Gregorii IX. Pontificis maximi, in quibus praecipuae, quae tum in theoria, tum in praxi occurrunt, difficultates solvuntur. Tomus Primus (...quintus).

Neapel, Prostant Venetiis apud Josephum Bortoli, 1738.. Fol. (I:)T.primus: Ttlbl., (8), 284 S.; secundus: Ttlbl., 327 S. (II:) tertius: Ttlbl., 623 S. (III:) quartus: Ttlbl., 327 S.; quintus: Ttlbl., 469 S. Fünf Teile in drei Lederbänden der Zeit. Insgesamt schöner, klarer Druck. 1. Bd. im Falz unten etwas Wurmfraß. Titelblatt bestempelt und handschriftliche Vermerke. Teils ausgebessert.. Liber II. Decretalium: 30 Titel, inhaltlich Prozeßrecht (Gerichtsaufbau und Prozeßverfahren). Liber III.Decretalium: 50 Titel, inhaltlich überwiegend materiellrechtlich: Kauf, Miete, Testament, kirchliches Pfründewesen. Liber IV. Decretalium: 21 Titel, inhaltlich Ehe- und Familienrecht. Liber V. Decretalium: 41 Titel, inhaltlich vorwiegend Strafrecht.

Institutiones astronomiæ, in usum juventutis patriæ

Uppsala: widow of B. Joh. Höjer, 1738. Uppsala: widow of B. Joh. Höjer, 1738. First Thus. Speckled sheep. Good. First Thus. Speckled sheep. 8vo (170 × 112 mm), pp. [8], 150, [2, contents]; woodcut astrolabe vignette to title-page, with 30 additional woodcut diagrams from 25 woodblocks; clean, crisp text, very light browning, speckled edges; ink inscription of Andr. Henr. Hamberg to front free endpaper; good in contemporary speckled sheep and speckled boards, rubbed with some wear to sides, small hole in leather near top of spine. Rare edition of a university student';s introduction to Newtonian physics and cosmology. The work seems to have been intended for the students of the university of Uppsala, the oldest university in Scandinavia, founded in 1477. It contains the fourth book of Wilhelm Jacob ';s Gravesande';s Philosophiæ Newtonionæ institutiones (1723). Of particular interest is the preface by Anders Celsius (1701-1744), who in 1736 set out on an expedition to Lapland with Pierre Louis Maupertuis for the purpose of measuring the arc of the meridian in part of a planned series of expeditions between the pole and the equator. His work won him great respect in Sweden, and he convinced the Swedish authorities to provide him with the resources to set up the Uppsala Astronomical Observatory in 1741. Celsius is most famous for his work in establishing a scientific basis for the international temperature scale which now bears his name. Also of note is the Latin panegyric quoted by Celsius in his preface, and written by Edmond Halley (1656-1742), Intima panduntur victi penetralia cœli.Houzeau & Lancaster 8856; not in Collijn; OCLC shows copies at Linkoping and National Library of Sweden.

, 1738. 1738. Paris, Gabriel & Claude Martin, 1738. (6), xx, 528, (58)pp. 4to. Contemporary mottled calf. Spine with 5 raised bands, goldtooled. Red titleshield. Edges stained red. Priced throughout and with some notes in a contemporary hand. 4785 items described including manuscripts, maps, prints and fine bindings and significant holdings of Elzevirs. The last 58 pages contain an alphabetical author index. (As usual the 6 pages with the books omitted from the sale not present. They are very rare and only to be found in a few copies) According to Bléchet, the collections was originally to be sold en block but in fact it was sold at auction between 12 May and 2 August 1738. The collection belonged to the celebrated book collector Count Karl Heinrich Hoym (1794-1738) who was the former Polish ambassador in France. He committed suicide in 1738; the present catalogue was edited by Gabriel Martin, (1679-1761), the famous French bookseller and bibliographer. It was he who introduced a new system of classification for (auction) catalogues, no longer by size but by themes. He has edited no less than 150 catalogues and the Hoym collection was one of the most elaborate ones. Martin knew Hoym and had played a role in forming the collection. He for instance bought several important books for Hoym at the du Fay sale in 1725. The Hoym collection contained no less than five Grolier bindings. A very good copy of this important auction catalogue. [cf Pollard & Ehrmann 276, Taylor p. 246; Grolier Club # 46, Bléchet p. 97, Blogie II 3. Catalogue of the distinguished library of the former Polish ambassador to France, Count Hoym, d. 1736, who amassed a splendid collection of current and early books significant for Italian literary history, vernacular literature, Aldines, Frobens, Estiennes, etc. Count Hoym's library was catalogued by the Paris bibliographer-bookseller Martin, 1679-1761. The library was sold at auction at the Hotel de Longueville in 1738 when many volumes went to Horace Walpole.

A posthumously published collection of the works of Samuel Clarke, including various sermons, essays on various religious and philosophical matters, etc. Also included are his correspondences with Gottfried Leibniz, as well as his essay concerning the controversy relating to 'the Proportion of Force to Velocity in Bodies in Motion.' Both of these see Clarke elaborate on and defend the views of Sir Isaac Newton, asserting the truth of his principles within a religious framework. Samuel Clarke was an important English philosopher and clergyman of the late 17th and early 18th centuries. He translated some of Newton's work into Latin and in general held to various Newtonian beliefs, often defending them in various essays. While his views sometimes subjected him to controversy, he was able to hold his position in the English church (see Wikipedia, the Dictionary of National Biography and other sources). FAIR condition. Ex-theological library. Small bookplates and minor stamping/markings to each book in the interior. Minor to moderate scuffing, uneven darkening and some staining to each of the volumes.
