BRITISH THEATRE. Great Britain. Parliament.
London: various printers, 1737. Collection of 22 Legislative Documents (19 Acts + 3 Bills) from the reigns of George II, George III, William IV, and Victoria. First edition folio printings. Woodcut and engraved Royal coats of arms, headbands, and ornamental initial letters. Printed in Old English Black Letter font up to 1793 and in Roman Letter font thereafter, on watermarked laid or wove paper. All documents have been neatly extracted from bound volumes and expertly mended. Archivally housed in a 4-ring binder. Theatrical performances in Great Britain during the early part of the eighteenth century were only loosely monitored by authorities. Performers used the stage to express personal opinions on current affairs, present satirical political commentaries, and openly criticize the government, with little or no concern for disciplinary action. Unchecked free speech in theatres was soon considered as a threat to the authority of the king and government, and a hazard to national security. Further, certain theatrical productions were believed to encourage social unrest and revolutionary behavior. In this light, parliament passed laws to regulate the content of public performances and control the licensing of theatres and playhouses. This extraordinary collection brings together all the laws passed during the Hanoverian Period on the regulation and licensing of theatrical performances in Great Britain, and traces the advancement of regulatory control over British theatre which lasted well into the twentieth century. The collection consists of the following Acts and Bills: Inter … [Click Below for Full Description]

[DALRYMPLE, ALEXANDER]. TAYLOR, ROBERT.
12 pp.Rare second edition, second issue, of a journal of a voyage from Sumatra to Bengal, kept by Captain Robert Taylor on the ship Ceres, followed by additional comments from "a manuscript, which may be depended upon". Locations sighted include: Hog Island, the Cocos islands, Aceh, the Straits of Malacca, Barren Island and the Andaman Islands. The journal was prepared for publication by the eccentric Scottish geographer Alexander Dalrymple (1737-1808), Captain Cook's leading rival. For years Dalrymple, as hydrographer for the East India Company, produced a series of memoirs and detailed ships' logs that he obtained in that function. He compared historical sources gathered from extensive archival research with newly obtained data straight from the ships and his own careful observations. With these publications Dalrymple became the originator of official British hydrography and as such they give a unique impression of the scientific background that laid behind the trade of the British Empire in the East and its development over the years.A very good copy.l A.S. Cook, Alexander Dalrymple (1737-1808), (PhD diss., 1992), A120; ESTC T75520 (6 copies); for Dalrymple: A.S. Cook, "Dalrymple, Alexander (1737-1808)", in: ODNB online (2008); Howgego, to 1800, D4.

TOMPSON, John, editor].
Gottingen by Abram. Vandenhoeck, Bookseller to the University, 1737. Rare first edition of one of the earliest pieces of English printing in Germany, and the first anthology of English literature for German students. ‘The University of Goettingen, founded in 1737 [by George II], right from its start had a Professor of French, and after 1747, a second official French lecturer. English was represented by John Tompson, the former lecturer of English at Helmstedt, who taught in Goettingen until his death in 1768. An outstanding cultural herald in an increasingly anglophile city, Tompson was for his contemporaries the incarnation of the true English gentleman. He was appointed as Professor of English (Extraordinarius) by George II in 1751, and promoted to the rank of full professor (Ordinarius) by George III in 1762. His personality and his teaching triggered a wave of anglophilia throughout Protestant Germany’ (Konrad Schröder, ‘Eight hundred years of modern language learning and teaching in the German-speaking countries of central Europe: a social history’, The Language Learning Journal, special issue, Feb. 2018: ‘Histories of Language Learning and Teaching in Europe’, pp. 28–39). In Bernhard Fabian’s words, Tompson’s anthology is ‘a highly competent piece of bookmaking. It appeared in Göttingen in 1737, shortly after the opening of the university. In its production two newcomers had joined forces. The publisher was Abraham Vandenhoeck, a Dutchman, who had moved his printing and bookselling business from London to Hamburg and soon after accepted an invitation to become Götting … [Click Below for Full Description]

Les Caracteres de Thalie is an experiment composed of a prologue followed by three short plays each of a different genre in order to present the different types of comedy then popular on the Parisian stage. It consists of a comedy of characters l'Inquiet; of Intrigue l'Etourderie*; and of Episode Les Originaux.** According to notes in the BnF's record of Fagan's plays, Les Caracteres de Thalie reflects an ingenious and innovative idea to assemble the different kinds of comedy into a unified whole, introduced by a Prologue. In the Savoy: Printed by E and R. Nutt, and R. Gosling, (Assigns of Edward Sayer, Esq;) for D. Browne, at the Black Swan without Temple-Bar; and J. Schuckburgh, at the Sun next the Inner Temple Gate in Fleetstreet., London, 1737. 8 x 12 1/2 inches. 132 pages. With ads for law books facing title page. Quarter calf with marbled boards. On the top of title page is written 'By Daniel Call', with the 'By' crossed-out with 2 lines. This signature matches perfectly Call's ownership signature on title page of a copy of Wythe's 'Decisions of Cases in Virginia.' which is in the Wolf Law Library. Daniel Call (1765-1840) studied law with George Wythe and was the author of a 6 volume 'Reports of cases Argued and Adjudged in the Court of Appeals of Virginia' 1801. On front pastedown is ownership signature of Wm. F. Watson - he apparently wrote on ffep 'A treatise of Equity by Lord Gilbert', in a long passage in writing seeming to be Call's, he argues that this book is certainly not by Gilbert but Ballow, he cites a copy in his possession of the Dublin 1769 3rd ed. which has Lord Gilbert as author even though text is very similar to this 1737. Condition is Good+; Boards have water stains, corners worn, hinges repaired with brown paper tape, rear is holding, front cover detached retaining ffep, other than the noted writing, the text pages are unmarked with the exception of 2 marginal notes, some pages are lightly toned, some with marginal stains. A good copy. Donkersloot-de Vrij, De Vechtstreek 30 (3 copies).
