LINNAEUS, C.
Amsterdam 1737. Folio (445 x 260mm). pp. (xxxii), x, 231, (1); 301-501, (17), with engraved frontispiece, engraved vignette on title and 36 engraved plates. Contemporary boards (spine a bit worn). First edition, large uncut copy of this attractive and important work. "Hortus Cliffortianus, with Genera plantarum and Species plantarum, is the central volume in botanical literature. In it Linnaeus had his first full opportunity to present a detailed catalogue of cultivated plants, in worthy format; and at the time he was feeling his way toward that distinguishing of species and varieties, even that abridgment of botanical names, which culminated in Species plantarum. As the volume was produced at the expense of George Clifford, merchant prince and owner of the gardens at Hartecamp, it stands alone among the many publications of Linnaeus as a really beautiful book. The sensitive and lively drawings of George Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770) and the good engraving of Jan Wandelaar (1690-1759) make the book a treasure ... W.T. Stearn notes that the book 'marks the beginning of a new era in botanical illustration and foreshadows the golden century of great flower-book production which extended from 1760 to 1860'. ... George Clifford (1685-1760) was an Anglo-Dutch banker, interested in the Dutch East India Company and the proprietor of magnificent gardens and a menagerie at Hartecamp in Holland. He had the good sense to employ both the fine flower-painting artist Ehret and the brilliant young botanist Linnaeus in the production of an illustrated catalogue of the plants growing on his es … [Click Below for Full Description]

Otzakoff (Ochakov).
NP: c.1737. A group of four manuscript maps on laid paper, expertly executed in ink & watercolour. The maps bear captions and text in German; two bear the legend: "Project der Linie welche unversaumt vor der Stadt Otzakoff in der weite eines Canonenschusses gemacht werden soll worhinter beij Somers Zeit die Regimenter Campiren könen". They are basically two versions each of two different maps, one a larger overview and one a close-in view. They are variously captioned and bear different cartouches with Explications and text in German. Two versions of the overview map have similar, but not identical Explications, within different cartouches at different locations on the sheet; they also differ in several respects from a copy held in the Military Archives of Sweden. This overview map is notably similar in layout to that produced by Matthaus Seutter in c.1737. The close-in map is titled: Plan der Vestung Otzakoff (One uses "Testung" in the title). This map likewise has different cartouches, and slightly different text within them. The smaller of the two here has not had the capital letters added within the map to relate it to the Key in the cartouche, and is evidently an earlier version. Though oriented differently, these are very similar to the map "Plan der Vestung Otzakoff" from the military map collection of George III [attributed to O.C. de Marin] although George III's map has a more complex lettering/key system. It also closely resembles the map of Otzakoff in Frederik den Femtes Atlas (Volume 44, Plate 54). These four maps all have some short tears in margins, a few sma … [Click Below for Full Description]

HESIOD.
HESIOD. Works. Oxford, Sheldonian Theatre, 1737.4to. Brown calf, upper and lower covers bordered in gilt, spine with 5 raised bands, profusely decorated with star and circle motifs, red spine label reading "Robinson's Hesiod", board edges decorated in gilt, in zig zag; pp. frontispiece, [8], lviii, 496, 1 plate; some minor rubbing and wear, mainly to head and tail of spine, bookplate of Thomas De Gray to front paste down endpaper, library shelf stamp to rear of front free endpaper, some minor foxing and toning as usual, but overall a very good copy in an attractive binding.Hesiod was a Greek poet generally thought to have been active between 650-750 BC. Both ancient and modern critics disagree as to precisely which works, and which parts of those works, are actually by Hesiod, and not just attributed to him. This edition (comprising solely of parallel Greek and Latin) includes:Theogony (Deorum Generatio), considered his earliest work, concerning the gods. It begins with Chaos, Gaia, Tartarus and Eros, and shows a special interest in genealogy. Herodotus considered Hesiod's version of the myths the common thread that bound together Hellene culture.Works and Days (Opera et Dies), an 800-line poem which focuses on two salient truths: labour is the universal lot of Man, but he who is willing to work will get by.The Shield of Hercules (Scutum Herculis) covers one of the exploits of Heracles, though many critics (including some in antiquity) believe it to have been written in the 6th century BC, after Hesiod. It also contains the Contest of Homer and Hesiod (Homeri & Hesiodi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Godolphin, Francis. 2nd Earl of Godolphin.
1737. London: October 19, 1737. Single folio leaf (14.5 x 9.5"), recto, 20 lines in neat, legible secretarial hand, witnessing signatures and statements in various hands in the margins, vertical official strike through the main text, not affecting legibility; verso with signed statement by Godophin "Rec'd the full contents within mentioned, Nov 3d, 1737," witnessed by John Mace. Expected folds and light soiling, several small chips on left edge and two short closed tears, none near the text. § By this document King George II awarded Francis, the 2nd Earl of Goldolphin, £657/15/0 "for the better support of the Honour and Dignity" in his office of Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal. The government officials who signed the document were Sir Robert Walpole, Great Britain's first prime minister; George Montagu, Earl of Halifax; Sir Charles Turner, Walpole's brother-in-law and then Father of the House; Thomas Winnington; and G. Earle (probably Giles Earle). Francis Godolphin (1678-1766) was a courtier and politician who served under three English monarchs. His mother had been close to the diarist John Evelyn and appointed him her "spiritual father." When she died six days after Francis' birth Evelyn took on the role of mentor and supervised the boy's education. In later life Godolphin became one of the founders of the Foundling Hospital in London, an orphanage and hospital for abandoned children. This document is a record from the zenith of his career when he was close the heart of Walpole's government as the Lord Keeper of the Privy Seal, the fifth of the Great Officers of State. Pierre Pomet
London: J and J Bonwicke, R Wilkin, S Birt, T Ward and E Wicksteed, 1737. London : J and J Bonwicke, R Wilkin, S Birt, T Ward and E Wicksteed, 1737 A very good copy of the third English edition in new half calf binding with marbled boards. When Pierre Pomet first published the work in France in 1684, a wealth of discoveries were being made through voyages to tropical regions. This book was the first to look at the new products - whether plant, animal or mineral being made available for european use. It was translated into English in 1712 and became a handbook for apothecaries. Pierre Pomet (1658-1699) had a practice in Paris as well his position as Chief Druggist to Louis XIV. The binding has raised bands with gilt lines to spine and a red title label. It is in fine condition. The pastedown endpapers have been replaced and there is the signature of Sarah Mainwaring to the fep. The title page also has her signature, crossed out, at the top. Contents: title page in red and black; dedication 3pp; Preface 7pp; sources named in the work 7pp; catalogue of seeds 5pp; text 419 pp with 86 plates (2 folding) - the text is divided into 2 books with a heading indicating Book II at p 225; index 9pp; finis. The plates are particularly interesting because some cover scenes showing the manufacture of products from raw materials, and the plates of animals mix myth and reality. c.1737]. Small 4to. Recently bound in quarter calf over marbled paper covered boards, red label and titles to spine. Title-page a little soiled, else a very good clean copy. 95, [1] pp. Lisbon, Por Pedro Craesbeck Impressor del Rey [but actual publisher unknown], 1625 [but actually This 18th century pirate edition of the great Portuguese shipwreck narrative was printed c.1737, and is often found in the third volume of the História Trágico-Marítima, an important compendium reprinting scarce 17th and 18th century Portuguese maritime literature. The first two volumes were attributed to the publisher Gomez de Brito, however the parts comprising the third volume were unattributed, with individual title pages and pagination (in this case repeating the publisher and license of the 17th century edition). C.R. Boxer describes the third volume of the compendium as much rarer than the other two, and states that ?no two copies which I have examined are exactly alike? The texts therefore are often found bound separately. In July 1622 the Portuguese Indiaman São João Baptista was returning on from Goa on the Carreira da India trade route, when she was separated from her flagship and beset by two Dutch galleons, taking her down to latitude 42*S. After an epic 14 day sea battle, the inferior Portuguese carrack, already in a poor state of repair from her outward journey, was forced to land off the coast of Kaffraria (the Eastern Cape of South Africa), and all surviving crew disembarked. Following a period of preparation at their camp, somewhere between the Fish and the Kei rivers, which inc … [Click Below for Full Description]

FEUDAL CASTLES
1737. Numerous fine brush-and-wash drawings in rich colors of about 149 castles, their fortifications, floor plans, & approaches. 64; 50; 49; 62; 67 folding leaves. Ten parts in five vols. 8vo (277 x 200 mm.), orig. patterned wrappers, new stitching. [Japan]: on the final leaf of the final vol. (in trans.): "9 April 1737 copied by Tadataka Sakai [and] Minamoto." The third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu (reigned 1623-51), the first born to the rule, spent much of his reign centralizing power in Edo, with the bakufu growing in importance as administrators and setters of policy. In 1645, the bakufu ordered all fiefdom lords who owned castles to make a shiro ezu, a detailed account of the structure of each castle; a gocho, which is akin to a census of their daimyo; and kuni ezu, maps of each area. These reports were compiled again in 1697. This is an invaluable and beautiful record of that famous survey of all the major feudal castles of Japan. This work was never printed but was frequently copied. The volumes depict, in rich color, overhead views of about 149 feudal castles that existed in 1697 (many still stand today) along with several idealized castles. The preliminary text of the first volume provides a color guide to the drawings: red for stone walls; yellow for roads or empty areas; blue for filled moats, rivers, oceans, etc.; purple for empty moats; black for watchtowers; green for ditches, mounds, fields, and mountains; etc. Shrines, stables, and other buildings within the castle grounds are also labeled. Each castle is labeled with its name, region, and … [Click Below for Full Description]

J. J. Bonwick, S. Birt, W. Parker, C. Hitch, E Wickfleed, London, 1737. Third edition. 8vo. xxiv, 419pp, [9]. Complete with 86 copper plates. Original brown leather, blind stamped boards w/rebacked spine. Six compartments, five raised bands on spine w/ gilt detailing. Black leather label w/ gilt letters. Some chipping to the leather of the boards' edges. "Selbourne Library" stamp on inverse of title page, no more than a cm in diameter. Mild foxing throughout, though nothing out of the ordinary for a book of this age. Plate 37 has a 2cm chip, though it in no way obscures the image [please see pictures for context]. All in all a book in very good condition. The first volume is entirely on trees, shrubs and other smaller plants. The species are presented under headings that indicate their use in the maintainance of health: Of Seeds; Of Roots; Of Woods; Of Barks; Of Leaves; Of Flowers; Of Fruits; Of Gums; and Of Juices. The second volume is on animals and minerals. A great landmark in pharmacology. The most complete materia medica of the time; it was the guide and manual of the herborists and the apothecaries of the 17th Century. Well written, it shows what a great knowledge the author had of the drugs he described. Pomet (1658-1699) was an apothecary of Paris who had collected the drugs of many different countries and published the results of his findings in this book. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
