Commentaries on the laws of England NEW RESPECT FOR THE LAW

With the engraved "Table of Consanguinity" and folding "Table of Descents" in Volume II. Modern half-morocco and cloth boards, spine gilt in 6 compartments, a.e.g. With the bookplate of Louis E. Goodman on the paste-downs. An excellent copy. PMM, 212. FIRST EDITION of the author's great history of English law. Blackstone (1723-70) was the first to make the law accessible to the common person. "Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation. If the English constitution survived the troubles of the next century, it was because the law had gained a new popular respect, and this was due in part to the enormous success of Blackstone's work" (PMM). "The Commentaries are not only a statement of the law of Blackstone's day, but the best history of English law as a whole which had yet appeared . . . the skillful manner in which Blackstone uses his authorities new and old, and the analogy of other systems of law, to illustrate the evolution of the law of his day, had a vast influence both in England and America, in implanting in the profession a sound tradition of the historical development of the law. . . ."&

Benedicti Carpzovii, JC. Consiliarii Electoralis Saxonici, Practiae Novae Imperialis Saxonicae Rerum Criminalium

Lpz., Fridrich Gleditschius 1723.. Editio Undecima, A Multis Mendis, Quibus Priores Editiones Scatebant, Vindicata ..., 3 Bde in 1 geb. 2°. 5 Bll., 298; (8) 371; (8) 356 S., 46 Bll. Pgmt. d. Zt.

[xxx]+268+[12] pages with red and black title. Small folio (12" x 8 1/4") bound in original leather with gilt lettering and decoration to spine. Third edition. The first edition of the La Florida was published by Pedro Crasbeeck at Lisbon. A reprint of this edition with emendations was made at Madrid in 1723 under the editorship of Andres Gonzalez Baria Carballido y Zuniga, which was quickly sold out and a third edition was published that same year with out the fold out map.Garcilaso, from time to time both in Peru and in Spain, encountered me who had participated in De Soto's expedition, but on several occasions declares that the material for the La Florida was derived solely from three sources. The account of Alonso de Carmona was received from the author himself, and that of Juan Coles he found in a somewhat battered condition at the establishment of a printer in Cordova. But the bulk of his facts came to him orally from noble Spaniard, who he eventually cornered in Las Posadas. The identity of this man he for some reason leaves shrouded in mystery; nevertheless, there is sufficient evidence for speculation, and historians in general have concluded that he was non other than Gonzalo Silvestre, a native of Herrera de Alcantara, whose fine horsemanship and exceptional boldness displayed as he gallops through the pages of La Florida.Condition:Spine head chipped away, edge wear with rubbing, leather scuffed, some margins professionally repaired else a good copy.

Novum testamentum graecum ... Collectionem Millianam recensuit, meliori ordine disposuit, novisque accessionibus locupletavit Ludolphus Kusterus. Editio secunda

Lipsiae: Sumptibus filii J. Friderici Gleditschii, 1723. Folio (40 cm, 15.75"). [20], 168, [2] pp.; 632 pp.; illus. Based on John Mill's much-lauded 1707 edition of the Greek New Testament, this is the second issue of Ludolph Kuster's revised version, originally published in 1710. A scholar from the Westphalia region of Germany, Kuster (1670–1716) specialized in paleography and Greek; this printing includes his preface and Prolegomena, and extensive commentary in Latin below the main text. Using twelve new manuscripts in his research, Kuster significantly added to Mill's (1645–1707) collation. The title-page, printed in red and black, features a => hand-colored engraved vignette of the Virgin Mary enthroned above the Earth, flanked by an eagle, a lion, a bull, and an angel, representing the Four Evangelists, and there are => five additional, large, illustrative hand-colored engraved vignettes functioning as headpieces in the text. Printed double-column and divided in the middle of each page by a paragraph of citations, the text is dotted by a variety of woodcut floriated and historiated initials, and factotum Greek capitals. Provenance: J. Provost largely written in light blue ink on title-page. Darlow & Moule 4735. Recent period-style quarter calf over marbled boards, raised bands accented with gilt ruling; gilt center devices in spine compartments, gilt red and green morocco author/title labels, place and date (misprinted 1721) gilt-stamped collector-style at base; red speckled edges. Ex-library: stamp on bottom edge, faded red stamp on half-title and title-page (almost invisible), number lightly inked to first page of preface. Occasional inkstains, with one large spill across an opening affecting four leaves on either side; all can yet be read, but the accident was a sad one. Otherwise minor to moderate foxing throughout and light marginal staining in lower outer corners, starting from back; chip to edge of title-page, tear to one top margin not reaching text, and a small natural hole in one lower outer corner. Marginal notes in pencil on two leaves (one, just a few words), and a longer note in older ink on another. Solid, impressive and usable, and its illustrations => LOVELY.

        PHILOSPHIÆ NATURALIS PRINCIPIA MATHEMATICA.

Sociatatus, Amsterdam 1723 - Text in Latin. Early reprint of the second edition (Wallis, Newton and Newtonia 1672-1975, 12; See Dibner, Heralds of Science, 11, Horblit 78, and Printing & the Mind of Man 161 for the first edition). Sir Isaac Newton's Principia, Another 'ultima' with additions, according to the Wallis's bibliography. Prefaces to 1713 edition (Cambridge: C. Crownfield) by the author, and by Roger Cotes of Cambridge. Table of contents. Also includes Analysis per Quantitatum Series, Flux, ac Differentias; cum Enumeratione Linearum Tertii Ordinis, with preface by W. Jones. Numerous diagrams in text. The book constitutes the greatest work in the history of science (Printing and the Mind of Man). The Principia is the foundation work on dynamics and gravitation and the first successful scientific model of the mechanisms of the universe. Copernicus, Galileo and Kepler had certainly shown the way; but where they described the phenomena they observed, Newton explained the underlying universal laws (ibid), these being the laws of gravitation and planetary motion, which established a concept of the universe unchallenged until Einstein. In a very sympathetic reproduction of an 18th century Oxford binding by Sean Richards of BYZANTIUM STUDIOS in Norman, Oklahoma. 4to., full calf reporoduction of an oxford binding, gilt on spine. (xviii), 484, (8), (xii), 107+(1) pages. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Primera [-tercera] parte de los viente I un libros rituales

Madrid,: Franco,, 1723.. Three volumes, folio, with engraved titles and a folding map with original handcolouring; neat old library stamps in several places; a handsome set in eighteenth-century Spanish polished marbled calf, double crimson morocco spine labels. This is the second and best edition of Torquemada's book, with the important map in rare and handsome original colour. This map (which did not appear in the 1615 Seville edition) centres on the Pacific, and shows the Chinese coast, the Philippines, Solomons, New Guinea and "Tierra Austral" to the west and Mexico and South America to the east. It is more often seen uncoloured. The preface mentions the extreme rarity of the first edition - only three copies were known in Madrid in 1723 - and explains that most copies had apparently been lost in a shipwreck, presumably en route to Mexico. The book is especially important in the literature of Pacific exploration because of Torquemada's account of Quiros' voyage of 1605, in which he sailed from Callao to locate the fabled Southern Continent. The earliest extensive description of the expedition to be printed, this remained the only reliable source available to navigators, geographers and historians until the nineteenth century. Celsus Kelly ("The narrative of Pedro Fernandez de QuirÛs" in Historical Studies, Australia and New Zealand IX/34, May 1960) has shown that Torquemada had access to Quiros' own account of the voyage as well as to the journal of Munilla, the commissary of the Franciscans who was also on the voyage. In fact Torquemada probably met Quiros in Mexico City in 1607, and again in Madrid in 1613. Kelly shows too that Torquemada probably also interviewed two other members of the expedition, the ensign Pedro LÛpez de Sojo and the sergeant Pedro GarcÌa de Lumbreras.Torquemada's book is important for many other reasons, not least for its account of Legazpi's expedition to the Philippines (see Retana, 226). Hill describes the book as the 'key work on the early history of Spanish North America, particularly Mexico, the Southwest and California... the primary source of VizcaÌno's 1596 and 1602 expeditions and voyage of discovery to California. It contains Father Antonio de la AscensiÛn's letter which relates to VizcaÌno's voyage during which most of the bays, headlands and rivers, including San Diego, were renamed. Torquemada also deals at length with Juan de Oçate's conquest of New Mexico, and briefly with the expeditions of Coronado, AlarcÛn, Espizo and Niza... The Mexican historian and statesman Lucas Alam·n called Torquemada the Livy of New Spain... '(Hill). The section of Torquemada's book dealing with the VizcaÌno expedition was published as a separate volume by the Book Club of California in 1933.Hill, 1707; JCB, 339; Medina, BHA IV, 2491; Palau, 335033.

Text is in Latin. The second and best Delphin edition (the first Delphin edition was a quarto edition published in 1685). Dibdin notes that the second edition, "is by far the more copious, splendid and critical performance". Jean Hardouin was a Jesuit classical scholar, "his first published work was an edition of Themistius (1684), which included no fewer than thirteen new orations. On the advice of Jean Garnier (1612-1681) he undertook to edit the Natural History of Pliny for the Dauphin series, a task which he completed in five years" (Wikipedia).         A draught of the pasage to Stockholm from Landsort to Suderarmen.

Numbered "15" in the lower right corner. S. Parker sculp. [1723, 1728 or 1756] Visible sheet area 48 x 54,5 cm. Frame 64 x 70 cm. Brown frame. White passe partout. Not examined out of the frame. A few minor creases. Slight darkening along the the fold. Nice condition.. An extremely rare sea chart of the Stockholm archipelago. Norris charts are almost never on the market and especially not such an important one as the Stockholm archipelago. Sir John Norris made several tours for the english navy in the Baltic. One result of this frequent service in the area was his atlas of the Baltic and the North Sea. It was first published in1723, with further editions in 1728 and 1756. This copy is probably from the 1728 or 1756 edition. Swedish names transformed into swedish are quite amusing to read, such as "Nymdy Fuer", "Lydingen" and "Uthoon"

Elias Ashmole (1617-1692) was an antiquary and astrologer whose life straddles the upheavals of 17th century England. Although a committed royalist he met and developed a lifelong friendship with the astrologer William Lily, who, at the time of their meeting, was making predictions favourable to the parliaments cause. Ashmole's career as an antiquary seems to start in the 1650s, when he catalogued the Tradescant collection, the ealiest known catalogue of an English 'Cabinet of Curiosities'. His interests as an antiquary were given further impetus when he met and became friends with William Dugdale in the mid 1650s. Although not published until after his death, Ashmole had begun collecting material for this book in 1667. Ashmole's extensive collections would eventually be given to Oxford University on the condition that they built a suitable building to house them. That building opened in 1683 as the Ashmolean Museum, the first public museum in modern Europe., 8vo .

Jacobum Certe Lugduni (Lyons) Jacobum Certe 1723 Editio Novissima (New edition) vg Quarto. [20], 422, [62]pp (Tables and Index). Original marbled calf with gold lettering and tooling on spine. All edges red. Marbled endpapers. Printer's device on title page. Decorative head-, and tailpieces. In this work, Bernard Lamy, the renowned French Oratorian mathematician and theologian, calls in question the historical character of the book of Tobias and book of Judith, and maintains that even after the Council of Trent a difference of authority should be recognized between the proto-canonical and deutero-canonical books of the Bible. This study examines also such subjects as the history of the Hebrews and the Holy Land, a description of the Tabernacle and Temple, a history of the scriptures, and a great many tangential matters like the plants, animals, minerals, diseases, and customs mentioned in the Bible. This book is exquisitely illustrated with 1 in text engraving, and 22 fine copper plate engravings bound at rear (including 11 folding). One folding plate shows the Greek & Hebrew alphabets. Others include 11 plates depicting animals and plants, two maps, a plan of Jerusalem, a detailed temple plan, a priest with garments, a rabbi with tefillin, and 3 charts of coinage and measurements. Some age wear along edges of covers. Gold tooling partly faded on spine. Text in Latin. Binding in overall good, interior in very good condition.
