(Caillet n°2506. Dorbon n°825. Duveen, p.455. Ferguson, I, 439. Wellcome, II, p. 375). [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Asia secundum legitimas Projectionis Steriographicae regulas et juxta recentissimas observationes et relationes.

Artist: Homann Erben ( - 1780) Nuremberg; issued in: Nuremberg; date: ca 1744 1724 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: colored; - condition: Upper left corner replaced; - size (in cm): 48 x 51,5; - description: Map shows total Asia and partly Europe; -vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria. Although educated at a Jesuit school, and preparing for an ecclesiastical career, he eventually converted to Protestantism and from 1687 worked as a civil law notary in Nuremberg. He soon turned to engraving and cartography; in 1702 he founded his own publishing house.Homann acquired renown as a leading German cartographer, and in 1715 was appointed Imperial Geographer by Emperor Charles VI. Giving such privileges to individuals was an added right that the Holy Roman Emperor enjoyed. In the same year he was also named a member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences in Berlin. Of particular significance to cartography were the imperial printing privileges (Latin: privilegia impressoria). These protected for a time the authors in all scientific fields such as printers, copper engravers, map makers and publishers. They were also very important as a recommendation for potential customers. In 1716 Homann published his masterpiece Grosser Atlas ueber die ganze Welt (Grand Atlas of all the World). Numerous maps were drawn up in cooperation with the engraver Christoph Weigel the Elder, who also published Siebmachers Wappenbuch.Homann died in Nuremberg. He was succeeded by the Homann heirs company, which was in business until 1848. The company was known as Homann Erben, Homanniani Heredes, or Heritiers de Homann abroad.

Sviatii Strastoterpets Khristov Feodor Stratiliat.

Contemporary colored-paper over boards; 142 pp. Folded engraving, measuring 50 × 42 cm, tipped in. Two private book plates; earlier signature to p. 133. Lower spine worn; binding lightly shaken, but still intact and internally very good. The first Western monograph on a Russian artwork, the hagiographic icon of Theodor Stratilates, housed at the church in Kalbensteinberg, Germany. Long attributed to Novgorod-era masters, the icon is now generally thought to be from the Pskov region, though its exact origin remains unclear: "Die Theodorus-Ikone aus dem Pskower Kunstkreis wurde zu Beginn des 16. Jahrhunderts geschaffen. The large engraving of the icon shows the saint at the center, surrounded by twelve scenes from his life, which are explained by Döderlein, who interprets not only its iconography, but transcribes and translates the Slavonic inscriptions. Praising Peter the Great and Russia's new-found fame abroad, he notes that the Empire's earlier obscurity made him doubt that a Russian icon could be located in a German church at all. Ultimately, Döderlein achieves a remarkable feat of inter-cultural mediation: his work not only educates German readers about Russian art and religion, but makes the foreign icon useful for spiritual contemplation by local paritioners. The historian, philologist, and pedagogue Döderlein (1675-1745) was a German polymath of the Baroque era and a member of Prussian Academy of Sciences. Cat. Russica D683. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Hermol-Albrizziana. In 12° (170x93 mm); pp. 24, 12, 20, 72, 68, 12, 20.

Stated in a Dialogue betwixt a Prude and a Coquet, last Masquerade Night, the 12th of May

London: Printed for J. Roberts 1724. - Folio, pp. [2], 8; a good copy, disbound.First edition, rare, of an amusing verse dialogue between two women preparing to attend one of the popular masquerade balls staged by the Swiss impresario John James Heidegger. Hilaria, a coquette, is effusive about the pleasures of the imminent party and she offers a tempting vision of the delights of the masquerade: 'so vast the crowds, so num'rous are the lights / I Chat, – I Laugh, – I Dance, – with Coquet's Art, / Play over all my Tricks; – yet keep my heart.' Her friend Lucretia, a prude, is sceptical, though her warnings are somewhat undermined by the crude sexual puns in which she frames her advice:The Fort of Chastity does shew some Strength, Its Fossè too of goodly Depth and Length; But then if Man produces one Great Gun,The Fort's demolish'd, and our Sex undone. The conversation ends with a comic twist: the prudish Lucretia, now converted by Hilaria, departs for the Ball to meet Philander (who, inconstant wretch, is sworn to Hilaria). John James Heidegger played a notable role in the introduction of Italian opera to London. His masked balls were hugely popular among the upper classes at the beginning of the eighteenth century, in part because of their notoreity for licentious behavour, and tickets were sold for as much as a guinea and a half each. Success brought less welcome attention too, and Heidegger, who was also famed for his ugliness, was satirised in prints by Hogarth, in verse by Pope, and as 'Count Ugly' by Swift. [with] DIO CASSIUS. Rerum Romanum a Pompeio Magno ad Alexandrum Mamaeæ, Epitome authore Ioanne Xiphilino. [with] DIO CASSIUS. Romanae Historiae Ultimi Libri Tres.

      (I) [Geneva]: Excudebat Henricus Stephanus 1581; (II) Lutetiae [Paris]: Ex officina Roberti Stephani 1551 & (III) Romae [Rome]: Ex Typographia Chracas 1724 - Three works bound in one volume, 8vo, (viii), 182, (2), 79, (1); 357, (3); xxviii, 186 pp. Printers' woodcut to each title page, second work cut close to the top margin with some loss of page numbers and headline, brief old inked inscriptions to the first two title pages. Bound in 20th century half vellum over marbled boards, black morocco spine labels detailing only the first work. Herodian's history, first printed 1502, was edited by Henri Estienne using the Latin of Angelo Poliziano. It was dedicated to the English poet and courtier Sir Philip Sidney, whom Estienne had befriended some years earlier. The second publication Estienne had dedicated to Sidney, ".he was concerned lest Sidney should be dissipating his intellectual gifts in the futile life of the court, and begins his dedication with three lines adapted from an epistle of Horace warning him against throwing away the gifts Apollo gave." (Buxton). The second part is the editio princeps of Zosimus' history, albeit only the first two books. Described by Gibbon as "a very questionable judge of merit", Zosimus wrote in Constantinople around 500 AD. The second work is also an editio princeps, of Xiphilanus' abridgement of books 61-80 of Dio Cassius' history, originally produced in the 12th century and the only source for this part of the work. It is beautifully printed by Robert Estienne (Henri's father) almost entirely in the Grec du Roi type designed for him by Garamond. Three years earlier Estienne had first published the surviving text of the rest of the work. The third work, a later printing of Cassius Dio's history, is, like the Herodian and Zosimus, printed in double column, Greek and Latin parallel. A splendid collection of three early historians. First Edition. ?To instruct any one then, in the Art of being Easy at all Times, will I hope be allowed to be an useful Attempt, and is of more use, without doubt, than all other things, which have been hitherto admired. We may easily be without Eloquence, and History. Man would live perhaps more happy if he was less learned, and less cultivated, but we are weary and uneasy everywhere; at Court, as well as in the Country, in great Posts, as well as in Obscurity. And is not advantageous, to be delivered from an enemy, so much the more cruel,a s he is less open and known? Conduct, and Skill, above all things, are necessary in this new kind of hidden War; and these are no less the work of a plain Study, than of a florid imagination. I appeal to the Judgement of the greatest; I would say, to the Judgement of those, who shine amongst the most polite, of the best Breeding, and the most taste.? [Attributes: First Edition]

Artist: Homann Erben ( - 1780) Nuremberg; issued in: Nuremberg; date: ca 1795 1724 - - technic: Copper print; - colorit: original colored; - condition: Some restorations; - size (in cm): 45,5 x 57,5; - description: Map of the Pacific Ocean with Australia, New Zealand, and Poynesia; -vita of the artist: Johann Babtiste Homann (1664-1724) was born in Oberkammlach, the Electorate of Bavaria.
