Valentyn-- François (1666-1727)
?Kaart van het Eyland Mauritius? [map of the island Mauritius], from Fran?ois Valentijn?s ?Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien?, after a drawing by Johan van Leenen, engraved by Jan van Braam and published in Dordrecht by Gerard onder de Linden in 1724-1726. Coloured by a later hand. Size.: 43 x 54 cm.Wybrant van Warwijck was the first Dutchman to arrive on Mauritius on September 18, 1598. Van Warwijck had strayed with five ships from the rest of the fleet of the so-called Tweede Schipvaart [second Dutch expedition], trying to reach Madagascar. He is said to have named the green island after Stadtholder Prince Maurice. The Dutch East India Company (VOC) initially only used the island as a refreshment station and did not permanently inhabit it. Mauritius had two good natural harbours suitable for larger ships, in the Northwest "Port de Warwick" (nowadays Port-Louis) and the Southeast. The Northwestern harbour was a sheltered bay and the Southeastern was protected by a series of islands and reefs. Valentijn reports that it was very stormy around February.Mauritius was a fertile island, rich with birds, the most important of which was the dodo for food, turtles and manatees. Pigs, deer and goats were left on the island for meat supply. In the course of the 1630s, the VOC found a permanent settlement necessary to prevent the French or the English from settling there. There were forests of ebony. Cornelis Matelief had planted lemon and orange trees. With the ships rats came to the island, against which in turn cats were released.Dutch colonization started in 1638 and ended in 1710, with a br … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

RARE 18th CENTURY VIEW OF MANILACopper engraving of Manila ?De Stad Manilha?, from Fran?ois Valentijn?s ?Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien?, made by Jan van Braam and published in Dordrecht by Gerard onder de Linden in 1724-1726. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 27,5 x 36,3 cm.Manila was one of the most important ports in all of the Pacific. It enjoyed this status for centuries before Europeans came to Southeast and Maritime Asia. The Spanish arrived in the islands, first in 1521 and more permanently in 1565. They took over Manila in 1571, naming it the capital city of their colony, which technically fell under the jurisdiction of the territory of New Spain. It was associated with New Spain and Spanish America because it was the western terminus of the circular Manila-Acapulco trading route. From 1565 to 1815, galleons would leave Acapulco filled with silver. In Manila, this silver would be piped into Asian, particularly Chinese, markets. The galleons were then filled with Asian trade goods and returned to Acapulco. These galleons were the largest wooden ships ever built, and many were made in Cavite, shown on the foreground of the view. The propagation of Roman Catholicism began with the Augustinian friar Andr?s de Urdaneta, who accompanied the expedition of 1571. He was followed by Franciscan, Dominican, Jesuit, and other Augustinian priests, who founded churches, convents, and schools. In 1574 Manila was baptized under the authorization of Spain and the Vatican as the ?Distinguished and Ever Loyal City? and became the centre of Catholicism as well as of the Philippines. In 1646 a ser … [Click Below for Full Description]

EARLIEST OBTAINABLE CHART TO SHOW MANILA BAY IN DETAIL?Manilhas Bay?, copper engraving from Fran?ois Valentijn?s ?Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien?, made by Jan van Braam and published in Dordrecht by Gerard onder de Linden in 1724-1726. Coloured by a later hand. Size: 30 x 38,5 cm.The chart is oriented northeast, so as to give the bay a vertical orientation. It shows Manila, Cavite (?Cabitta?), the monasteries of St. Lucas and St. Domingo, and a further unnamed monastery around the edges of the circular bay. Manila and Cavite are shown with many buildings in relief.Stippling reveals the ?droogtes?, or dry areas close to the shore. A compass rose sits dramatically in the middle of the bay. Numerous ships are sailing or idling on the water, underlining the importance of Manila as a port.Manila was one of the most important ports in all of the Pacific. [Click Below for Full Description]

[MAP - NETHERLANDS - ZEELAND]. VISSCHER, Nicolaus.
Zelandiae Comitatus novissima tabula.Amsterdam, widow of Joachim Ottens and sons [or Reinier and Josua Ottens], [ca. 1724 or 1747]. Imperial folio (57 x 36.5 cm). Comprising 9 untrimmed engraved sheets (each 56.5 x 66 cm; plate size 46.5 x 53.5 cm) that, if assembled, would give a map image of about 139 x 159 cm. Modern half calf. Magnificent large wall-map of Zeeland at a scale of about 1:42,000, known as the "Visscher-Roman" wall map, here as revised ca. 1724 by Reinier Ottens and published by the Ottens family. The map was originally produced in or shortly before 1655 by the Amsterdam engraver and map and atlas publisher Nicolaus Visscher I (1618-1679) and then or soon after published together with the Middelburg bookseller and publisher Zacharias Roman (1595-ca. 1675). Andries de Leth managed the firm for Visscher's widow and took it over in 1720. Around that time many of Visscher's plates were dispersed and the widow Ottens and sons must have acquired the Zeeland plates. They traded under that name from the death of Joachim Ottens, buried 28 June 1719, to the death of his widow, buried 6 February 1725. Reinier Ottens (1698-1750) revised the Zeeland map for publication with the plates in the present states, with new title-cartouches in three of the plates, each with the imprint of the widow Ottens and sons, so shortly before February 1725. Although no states are known with the imprint of Reinier and Josua Ottens, they advertised both the 9-sheet map and the 3 separately issued parts in 1747 and 1748, so they probably reprinted the maps without revising the plates in 174 … [Click Below for Full Description]

Also included is Rimpler's journal during the siege of Candia (Heraklion, Crete), which surrendered to the Ottoman forces in 1669 after 21 years of resistance. "What made Rimpler so valuable was that he brought together a formidable book knowledge with a long experience of fortress warfare with Swedish, Venetian, French, and Imperial armies. He had taken part in the last stage of the defence of Candia in 1669, and from this episode he derived a strategic doctrine of warfare against the Turks. ... According to Rimpler, everything came down to a proper balance between fortifications and the mobile elements, and he maintained that the static defences must be 'arranged in such a way that they will be effectively co-ordinated with the forces on land and sea'" (Duffy). With bookplates and with an English translation of the title-page in manuscript on flyleaf. Lafitau, Joseph François (1681-1746)
Saugrain l'aîné & Charles Estienne Hocherea, Paris, 1724. 2 volumes. [8]+610 pages with frontispiece, map and 18 plates; [12]+[14]+490+[42] pages with 23 plates and index. Quarto (10 1/2" x 8") recased in original leather with five raised bands with red labels to spine in gilt lettering. (Alden & Landis 724/97; Field 850; Howes L-22; Lande 494; Sabin 38596; Staton & Tremaine/TPL 158; Streeter sale I:121) First edition. Joseph-François Lafitau was a French Jesuit missionary, ethnologist, and naturalist. He is best known for his use of the comparative method in the field of scientific anthropology, the discovery of ginseng, and his writings on the Iroquois. Lafitau was the first of the Jesuit missionaries in Canada to have a scientific point of view. Lafitau is best known for his important discoveries on the Iroquois society. He arrived in Quebec in 1711 amidst a period of hostility between the Five Nations prior to the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht. The woods were deemed unsafe for travelers and therefore he was ordered to join the Iroquois on the south shore of the St. Lawrence valley in Sault St. Louis, also known as Kahnawake. Sault St. Louis already shared a great tradition with both the members of his order and the Iroquois by the time Lafitau arrived. He noticed the importance of women in Iroquois society, the universality of marriage as an institution, age grading, the classificatory system of relationship, and the pulse of Indian politics in the town council. Lafitau also contributed to existing scholarship on the Iroquois Long-house; he details the rules of resid … [Click Below for Full Description]

HERODIAN & ZOSIMUS
(I) [Geneva]: Excudebat Henricus Stephanus 1581; (II) Lutetiae [Paris]: Ex officina Roberti Stephani 1551 & (III) Romae [Rome]: Ex Typographia Chracas 1724. Three works bound in one volume, 8vo, (viii), 182, (2), 79, (1); 357, (3); xxviii, 186 pp. Printers' woodcut to each title page, second work cut close to the top margin with some loss of page numbers and headline, brief old inked inscriptions to the first two title pages. Bound in 20th century half vellum over marbled boards, black morocco spine labels detailing only the first work. Herodian's history, first printed 1502, was edited by Henri Estienne using the Latin of Angelo Poliziano. It was dedicated to the English poet and courtier Sir Philip Sidney, whom Estienne had befriended some years earlier. The second publication Estienne had dedicated to Sidney, ".he was concerned lest Sidney should be dissipating his intellectual gifts in the futile life of the court, and begins his dedication with three lines adapted from an epistle of Horace warning him against throwing away the gifts Apollo gave." (Buxton). The second part is the editio princeps of Zosimus' history, albeit only the first two books. Described by Gibbon as "a very questionable judge of merit", Zosimus wrote in Constantinople around 500 A.D. The second work is also an editio princeps, of Xiphilanus' abridgement of books 61-80 of Cassius Dio's history, originally produced in the 12th century and the only source for this part of the work. It is beautifully printed by Robert Estienne (Henri's father) almost entirely in the Grec du Roi type designed for him by … [Click Below for Full Description]

HIPPOCRATES (BOQRAT).
Aphorismi, ad mentem ipsius, artis usus, & corpis mechanismi rationem expositi.Paris, Guillelmum Cavelier, 1724. 2 volumes. 12mo. With a woodcut device on title-page and a tailpiece on the last page. Contemporary calf, gold-tooled spine, red edges, marbled pastedowns and endpapers. [2], xl, [4], 316; [4], 317-"601" [=591], [33] pp. 18th-century edition of Hippocrates Aphorisms in Greek and Latin, printed in 1724 in Paris. Hippocrates, in the Islamic tradition known as Boqrat, where he is often referred to as "the first codifier of medicine", is often named together with Galen, and their works mainly survived because of the Arabic translations. His aphorisms are a series of observations from which the patients affliction could be deduced and treatment prescribed. Their broad application made them exceptionally valuable to medical practitioners of the time. These aphorisms were very popular in the Islamic world and they can show us that Arabic-speaking authors critically engaged with Greek heritage in Arab translation. Today, some of these Arabic commentaries on the Aphorisms have survived and these sources show us how medicine developed in Europe and Arabia through the ages. Although this edition is a combination of Greek and Latin, the work was very influential for Arabic medical literature, because the Aphorisms led to new writings in this genre. The Aphorisms are an influential benchmark in the Arabic medical literature. With an ink inscription of Ludovici Dubois, doctor of medicine. Slightly damaged at lower hinge of the first volume, small wormhole in lower margin of the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bibliografia: Le Blanc, 4
