*** Hunting for begging under the Regency This spectacular primary source has remained unknown to historians of renfermement. The biographical records of poor people and beggars are numbered from 1 to 470, each with the repressive forces responsible for their arrest. The year 1724 corresponds to the increase in the penalties incurred by beggars: first arrest: two months' imprisonm … [Click Below for Full Description]

Pierre MORTIER (1661 - 1711)
Cremonini pp. 83-90

Both volumes have the bookplate of George Herbert Palmer, volume 1 has an additional bookplate of C. A. and V. Baldwin. § First edition. The verso of the title-page in Volume II bears an ink notation: "The Original Manuscript of both Volumes of this History will be deposited in the Cotton Library by T. Bishop Burnet (1643-1715) was a Scottish historian, theologian, and member of the Whig party. Burnet kept a detailed account or "secret history" of events in England during the reign of James II while he lived in exile, after the revolution of 1688 he returned and worked on the history intermittently up until 1713, he spent the last two years of his life revising the work. Fiddes, Richard. The Life of Cardinal Wolsey.London: Printed for John Barber, 1724. [4], lv, [1], 534, 260 pp. Illus. with seven copper plate engravings and one in-text engraving. Folio. Cloth. First edition. A very good or better copy, modern rebinding, leaves very bright, small chip to lower margin of frontis else plates sharp and clean, overall contents near fine. ESTC T76228. Illustrations include portrait frontispieces of Fiddes, portrait of Wolsey, the Magdalen College Tower; two further portraits: of Bishop Tunstall and Bishop Fox, the House Of Lords; Christ Church College, Oxford (dbl. page); two views of Christ Church interiors; plus in-text engraving of coins. In this work, Fiddes ... "it attempted to vindicate Wolsey's memory from the obloquy which had persistently pursued it, and also that it took a view of the Reformation less unfavourable to the mediaeval church than that of most Protestant writers. Fiddes was immediately attacked both by the press and in the pulpit. He had been faithful to the Earl of Oxford after his fall, and had frequently visited him in prison; further, in the preface to the ' Life of Wolsey,' he said that Atterbury had offered him the opportunity of writing it in his house, and he paid a warm tribute to Atterbury's abilities. It therefore suited Atterbury's assailants to accuse Fiddes of popery, and represent him as employed by Atterbury to write his work," DNB XIX, 398. [Mexico] Moro, Gerardo
1724. Mexico. Juan Francisco de Ortega Bonilla. 4to. 1 ff., 127 ff. Unbound and preserved in a modern cloth box. Minor foxing to title page, else fine.- First edition. According the treaty of Utrecht of 1713, the Spanish monarchy granted a thirty-yearassientoor license to the British allowing them to supply 4800 slaves to the Indies colonies and 500 tons of goods per year; this license was transferred directly to the South Sea Company (in those days South Seas referred to South America). The Company was founded in England as a joint-stock company in 1711, with the aim of trading with America, for which it was granted a monopoly. The Company became defunct in 1720, in an event known as the South Sea Bubble. In this work, which starts with a detailed history of the Assiento and its trading record mostly confined to Mexico, Moro appears to be highly informed of the Company’s activities, he defends the right of the English to introduce black slaves into Spanish America, and to do so without paying taxes, as the Consulate of Mexico looked at the British traders as encroaching on their interests. To support his case, Moro argued that there was no difference between the trade in black slaves or general goods, and that therefore like the latter, the slave trade should be exempt from taxation. It has been calculated that in 25 years, 34,000 slaves were purchased by the South Sea Company, and brought to America, of which only a portion survived the perilous voyage. “A very rare and curious work” (Sabin). 1724. The Art of Being Easy At All Times is a guide for social conduct, specifically aimed at women. Some of the topics it explores include whether or not studious persons are more subject to "uneasiness" than others, conversing tactfully with women, women being less subject to uneasiness than men, the exile of Ovid (that is, prizing moments that are spent alone), how to enlighten conversation ("sweetness," "light jesting" and a good sense of humor are more important than wit, especially in polite company), the importance of reading in betwee … [Click Below for Full Description]

(Alden & Landis 724/97; Field 850; Howes L-22; Lande 494; Sabin 38596; Staton & Tremaine/TPL 158; Streeter sale I:121) First edition. Joseph-François Lafitau was a French Jesuit missionary, ethnologist, and naturalist. He is best known for his use of the comparative method in the field of scientific anthropology, the discovery of ginseng, and his writings on the Iroquois. Lafitau was the first of the Jesuit missionaries in Canada to have a scientific point of view. Lafitau is best known for his important discoveries on the Iroquois society. He arrived in Quebec in 1711 amidst a period of hostility between the Five Nations prior to the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht. The woods were deemed unsafe for travelers and therefore he was ordered to join the Iroquois on the south shore of the St. Lawrence valley in Sault St. Louis, also known as Kahnawake. Sault St. Louis already shared a great tradition with both the members of his order and the Iroquois by the time Lafitau arrived. He noticed the importance of women in Iroquois society, the universality of marriage as an institution, age grading, the classificatory system of relationship, and the pulse of Indian politics in the town council. Lafitau also contributed to existing scholarship on the Iroquois Long-house; he details the rules of residenc … [Click Below for Full Description]

Cowper, William
Robert Knaplock [etc.], London, 1724. Cowper, William (1666-1709). Myotomia reformata. . . . Folio. [12], lxxvii, 194pp. Fronts. & 66 magnificent plates (plus 1 outline plate), double-page engraved table, numerous fine head- & tailpieces, fascinating historiated initials with myological motifs, diagrams in text. London: Printed for Robert Knaplock, William & John Innys & Jacob Tonson, 1724. 510 x 332 mm. Modern full calf preserving 18th-century spine. Minor wear and browning, but very good. First Folio Edition. One of the most beautiful atlases of the 18th century, Cowper's Myotomia made a modest first appearance in 1694 as an octavo with 10 plates. Cowper worked until his death on a new edition, which was finally published posthumously under the supervision and at the expense of Richard Mead (1673-1754). This new sumptuous folio with 66 plates, some after Rubens and Raphael, and others after nature, ranks as one of the most artistic anatomical publicatons of the period, not only for the quality of the plates, but for the overall printing, especially the ingenious historiated initials with myotomical motifs. The text of this edition also contains a long introduction on muscular mechanics by Dr. Henry Pemberton, editor of the 1726 edition of Newton's Principia. The Myotomia was the most complete atlas of the muscles published up to that time in any language, and should be considered on a par with the very greatest atlases of the period by Albinus and Cheselden. ERASMUS, Desiderius
Printed for J. Wilford at the Three Flower De Luces in Little Britain. 1724 Praise of Folly Erasmus of Rotterdam Protestant Reform Holbein Illustrated When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes. Erasmus In 1509, Erasmus composed his famous essay In Praise of Folly which was a satirical attack on superstitions and other unconventional traditions in European society. Since its inception in the early 16th-century, it is considered one of the most important works of the Renaissance and helped develop early stages of the Protestant Reformation. Erasmus uses satire to examine doctrine and corruption within the Catholic Church, even though Erasmus was devoted deeply to Catholicism. He concludes In Praise of Folly with statements of supporting Christian Protestantism. He frequently references Greek mythological creatures and figures. This 18th-century printing is desirable because of the inclusion of the drawings of Hans Holbein, which were originally included in the 1515 Basel edition. These illustrations are considered the most famous illustrations of In Praise of Folly . This 1724 fourth edition was translated into English by W. Kennet. Item number: #7424 Price: $599 ERASMUS, Desiderius Moriae encomium: or, the praise of folly. Made English from the Latin of Erasmus. By W. Kennet.
