Harderwijk, Jan Rampen, 1722. 4to. With 18 woodcut illustrations plus 1 repeat. Modern half vellum. 96 pp. Extremely rare fifth edition, the second illustrated with woodcuts, of a popular account of the story of the East Indiaman Ter Schelling, which was wrecked off the coast of Bengal. The author, a member of the crew, kept a journal of his experiences, and the 18 woodcuts illustrate the crew's adventures both at sea and on land. The ship left Batavia with 85 men and about 28 canons under captain Jacob Jansz. Stroom on 3 September 1661 and came within sight of Bengal on 8 October. They wrecked on a sandbank off shore, however, and had to make rafts to travel further, 32 of them managing to reach an uninhabited island. Van der Heyden describes the crew's desperate hunger, when they were tempted even to eat a worm-filled human corpse. They survived on turtles, snakes, iguana and occasionally rotten buffalo meat. By chance they reached mainland Bengal in the middle of the region's greatest war (1660-1662), so once ashore they were conscripted into the enormous Mogul army to fight against the kingdom of Assam, said to be cannibals. The gruesome massacre of captives by the Nabob is described and illustrated. Following the story of the voyage are descriptions of the kingdoms of Arrakan, Martaban, Tanassery, Bengala and Patan along the coast o … [Click Below for Full Description]

With engraved frontispiece showing a mining operation, and 9 engraved plates. 18th-century vellum. The illustrations include both living and fossil plants, as well as a shell.Johann Friedrich Henckel (1678-1744) worked as a physician in the mining town of Freiberg in Saxony. In 1730 he was appointed councillor of the mines and was able to establish a large laboratory, where he resumed his course in metallurgical chemistry, which became renowned throughout Europe. With early manuscript annotations on endpapers and title-page. 1722. Title printed in red and black, engraved device on title, woodcut initials and headpieces. Folio (347 x 235mm.) [12], 557, [1]p. Contemporary Italian vellum, red morocco label, green silk marker, yellow edges. Ferrara: B. Pomatelli, 1722. A handsome copy of this biographical dictionary by the Ferrarese Jesuit Giulio Negri (1648-1720) published after his death; as the address to the reader explains, ?la morte dell?Autore accaduta, mentre cominciava ad imprimersi? The introduction acknowledges that there have been many other attempts at such a work, but urges the reader to stick with this one, citing over two thousand writers listed (in fact, 1593) alphabetically by first name, and described in great detail. Replete with information, it was a popular reference work though should be used with caution; Pomatelli warns of numerous errors left uncorrected by the author before his death. Little is known of Negri; born to a family of modest nobility in Ferrara, he entered into the local Compagnia di Gesù in 1665, aged 16 and was ordained in 1685. Surviving correspondence suggests that he transferred a year later to the collegio di S. Giovannino in Florence, from where he sought, and received the patronage of Grand Prince Ferdinando de? Medici; he was made official historian and commissioned to compose this work. Provenance: Armorial bookplate of A.R.A. Hobson, bibliographer and bookbinding historian. Trivet, Nicholas (1258-1328), Anthony Hall, ed., Edmund Bolton,
Theatro Sheldoniano, 1722. Hardcover. 2 volumes, 8vo, vellum backed marbled boards, good with heavy rubbing to boards and some loss to marbled paper, particularly to fore-edge of first volume, darkening and light wear and loss to vellum, contents VG, occasional marginal pen marks and short notes, with portrait frontispiece, vignettes on titles pages which are printed in red and black. "Hypercritica; or a Rule of Judgment for writing or reading our History's..." by Edmund Bolton is printed in English, whereas John Boston's "Speculum Coenobitarum" -- an account of the origin of monastic life -- is in Latin. Bolton's "Hypercritica" composed between 1618 and 1622, is an important contemporary prologue to a planned English history, significant for its early mentions of Francis Bacon and for its contemporary praise of Ben Jonson as the greatest English poet: this is the first time it was printed. Trivet was an important contemporary chronicler of the Angevin Kings of England. Good.

The questions asked in this book seem to be of curious roots - for example:· What is the custom to discover if a person is a murderer?· Is God perfect?· Does the King offend God by being cruel to his subjects?· Can astrologers and fortune-tellers see contingencies in their predictions?· How many religions are there in the world?· Which of the Latin poets was best? Each of these questions, and the hundreds of others, are answered in a thorough, detailed manner. A curious and interesting work.Item number: #10935Price: $750variousThe Delphick oracle: resolving the most curious questions in love and gallantry: as also in divinity, history, chronology, law, physick, anatomy, philology, poetry, mathematicks, and all other arts and sciences: for the advancement of divine and humane learningLondon: Printed, and sold by Sam.
