(Samuel CROXALL, trans.). AESOP
Printed for J. Tonson and J. Watts, 1722. 8vo., First Edition thus, with engraved frontispiece, title in red and black, and 196 fine woodcuts in the text, neat contemporary inscription on blank preliminary; attractively bound in eighteenth century full speckled calf, boards with gilt frame border, back with raised bands, second compartment with red leather label lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments ruled in gilt, red sprinkled edges, expertly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, a remarkably bright, crisp copy. FIRST EDITION OF THIS SELECTION AND TRANSLATION BY SAMUEL CROXALL. Croxall compiled his translation to rival the well-known version of Roger L'Estrange (first published 1692, many times reprinted and prior to this edition the well-nigh 'standard' text). Croxall accuses his predecessor of Jacobite tendencies, but has himself not resisted the temptation to incorporate political overtones into what is primarily a children's book. The present selection includes no fewer than 196 fables, each illustrated by a charming and well-executed woodcut, several of which were later used as models by Bewick. The frontispiece of Aesop orating is after Vandergucht. An immediate and popular success, Croxall's edition was itself many times reissued, remaining in print until well into the latter half of the nineteenth century and today probably his best-remembered work. AN EXCELLENT COPY OF AN IMPORTANT EDITION AND EXTREMELY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY IN THIS CONDITION.

STAMPIOEN, Jan Jansz the Younger - M. CALMAM
Jochem Hasebroek, 1722. Large engraved celestial chart with a rotating printed paper ring (volvelle or rete) on an off-centre axis to indicate the part of the sky visible at any date and time and to make a variety of celestial calculations, all for the Netherlands' latitude of 52 degrees. With letterpress instructions by Calman on a separate printed slip at the right. The sky image 32.5 cm in diameter; the whole chart with the letterpress slip as mounted 56 x 66.5 cm. A string serves as a pointer for aligning the scales in the stationary and rotating parts. Coloured by a contemporary hand. The chart is here in its third state, but we have located no complete example of any earlier version. The Boerhaave Museum in Leiden has the chart without volvelle or instructional text, published by Doncker, but the 1664 edition described in Doncker's advertisement clearly included the volvelle and instructional text. Perhaps the surviving chart is the 1684 version mentioned but not seen by Bierens de Haan, who provides neither a detailed description nor a source for his information. They and the present version (printed from Doncker's plate c. 1722) seem to have appeared only as separate publications, hence their great rarity. The circular border around the sky image and the outer part of the volvelle include scales with several kinds of data so that the chart can be used for various purposes. one can use the string to align the time in the volvelle with the date in the border of the chart, so that the part of the sky visible at that moment appears inside the volvelle. The chart with it … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

The first edition of this work, which was presented by his son George following Smith's death. This analysis of Bede's work is regarded as a pioneer in English medieval scholarship. In Latin. This work was undertaken under the influence of Thomas Gale and was encouraged by Ralph Thoresby with the assistance of Humfrey Wanley when regarding the Old English. Smith died before he finished the preparation of this work. twentieth century scholar David Charles Douglas regarded this edition as 'an enormous advance' compared to previous ones. Written criticism of Bede did not change after this work until the late nineteenth century when Christopher Plummer's edition was published. Smith was a Canon of Durham Cathedral, where Bede is buried. His undertaking is regarded as the first critical edition of Bede's 'Ecclesiastical History' and as extremely thorough. Smith spent fourteen years preparing this publication. At this point only a quarter of the text was ready. His son George completed the work. FOURMONT (Etienne) ].
A Paris, chez C. L. Thiboust, 1722. in-12. XXVIII. 2ff. 205pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Printed for J. Tonson and J. Watts, 1722. Printed for J. Tonson and J. Watts,, 1722. 8vo., First Edition thus, with engraved frontispiece, title in red and black, and 196 fine woodcuts in the text, neat contemporary inscription on blank preliminary; attractively bound in eighteenth century full speckled calf, boards with gilt frame border, back with raised bands, second compartment with red leather label lettered and ruled in gilt, all other compartments ruled in gilt, red sprinkled edges, expertly rebacked with old backstrip laid down, a remarkably bright, crisp copy.
