Atlas of the Modern World Titled:] Atlas Manualis Scholasticus et Itinerarius Complectens Novae Geographiae Tabulas LI.

Nürnberg 1723 - Nürnberg: Johann Christoph Weigel, [1723]. Revised edition with an updated index and title. Folio (37x25 cm). With a copper engraved title (index verso), double-page copper engraved frontispiece by J. G. Covers mildly rubbed, titled page with a couple marginal tears (with old repairs), Frontispiece slightly shaved at top at, a few maps with marginal tears and old repairs. However the atlas overall in very good and very original condition, the maps are strong impressions and generally clean with attractive unfaded original hand colouring. The fifty-one very decorative maps include: A World map, Europe, Portugal, Spain, France, Lorraine, Great Britain, England, Scotland, Ireland, Netherlands(3), Germany and fifteen maps of German states, Switzerland, Italy and five maps of Italian states, Scandinavia, Denmark, Sweden, Poland, Muscovy, Danube course, Hungary (two maps together), Greece (2), Asia, Ottoman Empire, Holy Land, Africa & America. Johann Christoph Weigel (1654-1725), was a German engraver, illustrator and publisher (Tooley Q-Z p. 367); Phillips 569. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Acts of Assembly, Passed in the Province of Maryland, from 1692, to 1715

Printed by John Baskett, London 1723 - xi,[8],183pp. Early 20th-century three-quarter morocco and cloth, gilt. Titlepage neatly detached, with a small embossed library blind-stamp and two small holes in upper margin, not affecting text, faint dampstain through most of text. A rare early collection of Maryland colonial laws Like the rare Virginia laws printed by the Royal Printer, Baskett, a few years later, this collection of Maryland laws seems to have been largely unknown to the colonists for whom it was written. Perhaps the laws were not meant for the colonists at all. The Brinley catalogue states: "[Thomas] Bacon, in his preface to his Body of Maryland Laws , 1765, says: 'I have seen (some time before I left England in the Year 1745) an Edition printed at London, at Lord Baltimore's Expense, as I have been informed, for the Use of the Board of Trade, with the Latin Charter prefixed: But I could never meet with a Copy of it in this Province, nor can I recollect the date it bears.'" The Brinley copy realized $42 in 1880; the last copy in auction records is 1948. Brinley Sale 3657, Sabin 45045. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Ebrietatis Encomium: Or, The Praise Of Drunkenness; Wherein Is authentically, and most evidently proved, the Necessity of frequently Getting Drunk; and, that the Practice of getting Drunk is most Antient... By Boniface Oinophilus de Monte Fiascone

      E. Curl, 1723, HARDCOVER, Book Condition: USED, VERY GOOD. First edition. An English translation of the "Eloge de l'yvresse" by A. H. de Sallengre, attributed to Robert Samber. A good tight library binding. 12mo. 17.6cm x 11.5cm x 1.7cm. [12pp.]/pp.151. Grey-green buckram, with paper title label to both front board and spine:"Ebrietatis Encomium." Later endpapers. Printed library label to verso of the front board: "District Punjab, Grand Lodge, Library. * Browned and soiled endpapers. Engraved frontis with title: "Vivimus dum Bibimus." (While we live, let us live). Printe title-page with purple library stamp: "District Grand Lodge Library. Punjab. 1890". Title and frontis lightly soiled. Otherwise, clean English text throughout, just the odd small blemish. The last leaf has a black ink-stain which covers 20% of the text, and touches a few words on the last few leaves. Still a well preserved copy of a scarce book. Referenced by: ESTC T72868 ** "...In the treatise, Ebrietatis Encomium or the Praise of Drunkenness (1723), chapter fifteen is dedicated to "Free masons and other Learned Men that used to get Drunk". Opponents of the craft suggested that the Masons had derived their epiphet "free" from their cult of imbibing. One comic couplet traces the semantics of "free" to a Bacchanalian source: 'Tis Wine, ye Masons, makes you free, Bacchus the father is of Liberty." - See Robert Burns, The Freemasons' Poet Laureate by Marie Roberts, 1986 - Full title reads: "Ebrietatis Encomium: Or, The Praise Of Drunkenness; Wherein Is authentically, and most evidently proved, the Necessity of frequently Getting Drunk; and, that the Practice of getting Drunk is most Antient, Primitive, and catholic. Confirmed By the Example of heathens, Turks, Infidels, Primitive Christians, Saints, Popes, Bishops, Doctors, Philosophers, Poets, Free Masons, and other Men of Learning in all ages. Die Familie de Coucy aus der Picardie wurde einigermaßen populär durch das Buch von Barbara Tuchman \"Der ferne Spiegel\", in dem sie die Geschichte des 14.         ACTS AND LAWS, OF HER MAJESTIES PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHUSETTS-BAY IN NEW-ENGLAND

Boston, 1723. [bound with:] THE CHARTER GRANTED BY THEIR MAJESTIES KING WILLIAM AND QUEEN MARY, TO THE INHABITANTS OF THE PROVINCE OF THE MASSACHUSETTS-BAY IN NEW-ENGLAND; THE TABLE [i.e. the index to ACTS...]; and twenty-four consecutive printings of session laws through 1723. Quarto. Contemporary tooled calf. Calf moderately worn; covers bowed. Early ink scribblings and numerical notations on the endpapers. Minor dampstaining toward the rear. Printed ownership label affixed to front pastedown. Overall very good. In a half morocco and cloth box. The earliest obtainable version of the Massachusetts-Bay colony laws, since the 17th-century versions are virtually unobtainable today. Second issue, with the reprinting notice on the verso of the titlepage, with the CHARTER... preceding the ACTS... and the second edition of THE TABLE containing pagination through 1721 (also bound in prior to the ACTS... titlepage). All of the session laws which followed through 1723 are present (they are continuously paginated, although issued periodically). This version of the laws would have been made obsolete by the 1726 version of the laws, when the session law numbering would have begun all over again. A nice early colonial legal volume, in contemporary condition.

[MANUSCRIPT AGREEMENT BETWEEN HANNAH PENN AND LORD BALTIMORE, SIGNED BY BOTH PARTIES, REGARDING THE BOUNDARY DISPUTE BETWEEN PENNSYLVANIA AND MARYLAND]

London, 1723. Folio. Old fold lines. Minor soiling. Very good plus. In a half morocco box. A highly important original manuscript agreement between Hannah Penn and Lord Baltimore, according a brief peace in the dispute over the boundary line between the colonies of Pennsylvania and Maryland. The document is signed by Mrs. Penn; Charles Calvert, Fifth Lord Baltimore; Penn's agent, James Logan; and various witnesses and counsel for both sides. This document records one of the attempts to settle the long-standing dispute, and was intended to provide stability in the area for a period of eighteen months, pending a permanent solution between the Penns and the Lords Baltimore. "Hannah Penn had inherited the Pennsylvania proprietorship upon her husband's death in 1718, and proceeded to mortgage it to Joshua Gee, 'Merchant,' and Henry Gouldney, 'Linnendraper' (whose name is mis-spelled 'Goldney' in the text). Despite the increasing population in the disputed colonial territories, little profit was forthcoming, either to Hannah and her mortgages or to Charles Lord Baltimore, who had taken over the Maryland proprietorship upon the death of the Fourth Lord Baltimore: 'while settlers agreed to purchase lands in the disputed areas, they would not pay the proprietors for them until the boundaries were determined' (Wainwright [T], pp.254-255)" - Chew. As with any contract, several original manuscript copies of this document were produced; the copy sold in the Chew sale at Christie's in 1982 is identical to the copy offered here. The document reads: "Whereas there are disputes depending between the respective proprietors of the provinces of Maryland and Pensilvania touching the limits or boundarys of the sd. provinces where they are contiguous to each other. And whereas both parties are at this time sincerely inclined to enter into a treaty in order to take such methods as may be advisable for the final determining ye sd. controversy by agreeing upon such lines or other marks of direction to be settled as may remain for a perpetual boundary between ye two provinces. "It is therefore mutually agreed between the Right Honble. Charles Lord Baltemore proprietor and governour of Maryland & Hannah Penn widow and executrix of Wm. Penn Esq. late proprietor & governour of Pensilvania. And Joshua Gee of London, Merchant, and Henry Goldney of London, Linnendraper, in behalf of themselves & the mortgagees of the province of Pensilvania that for avoiding of all manner of contention or differences between the inhabitants of the sd. provinces, no person or persons shall be disturbed or molested in their possessions on either side, nor any lands be surveyed, taken up, or granted in either of the sd. provinces near the boundary, which have been claimed or pretended to on either side. "This agreement to continue for ye space of eightteen [sic] months from the date hereof. In which time tis hoped the boundarys will be determined and settled. And it is mutually agreed on by the said partys, that proclamations be issued out in the said provinces signifying this agreement for the better, quieting the people. And the Lieutenant Governours and other proper officers of the respective provinces for the time being are directed and enjoyned to conform themselves agreeable hereunto; and to issue out proclamations accordingly upon the receipt hereof. In witness whereof the partyes above named have hereunto set their hands this 17th day of February 1723." It is signed by "Baltemore," J. Clement, Charles Lowe, James Logan, Hannah Penn, Joshua Gee, and Henry Gouldney. Though this agreement may have provided a temporary respite for the issue, it did not, in the end, move the two parties any further toward a permanent accord. From the time of William Penn's original grant of Pennsylvania in 1682, he was at loggerheads with the Lords Baltimore over the boundary lines between the colonies. The present document was one of the sporadic efforts to resolve the problem before 1732, when both sides put forward maps of their own as guides. Baltimore insisted on the use of his map, and the Penns, who were under great money pressure and eager for an agreement, acceded, as they did to a number of Baltimore's demands. The settlement was unpopular in Maryland, when it finally reached America in 1733, and Lord Baltimore soon discovered another problem: his map was inaccurate, and the mislocation of Cape Henelopen gave the Penns more land than he had thought. As a result, he tried to nullify the agreement, which led to a lawsuit in Chancery Court in London, charging fraud. The Penns, naturally, replied that it was based on Baltimore's map, not theirs. From this lawsuit, which was wrangled over for the next sixteen years, came a string of printed documents, all now very rare, in which the parties set out their arguments. Finally, in 1750 the Penns won the case, with costs, and the surveying could again proceed. A number of abortive attempts were made to survey the boundary, before the two sides finally employed Mason and Dixon to make the final survey in 1763-68. The present manuscript is thus one of the first documents in the protracted negotiations over the boundary which were only finally resolved forty-five years later. A wonderful and important piece of this long-running dispute, vital to the history of both Maryland and Pennsylvania.

London: Printed for E. Curl, Against Catherine Street, In The Strand, 1723. [Price Five Shillings.] 0. First edition. An English translation of the ?"Eloge de l'yvresse?" by A. H. de Sallengre, attributed to Robert Samber. An inquiry into the nature and causes of the wealth of nations. 3 vols. 7th edition. London, A. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1793.

"Full leather. Spine of vol. 2 broken, other spines weak, cover edges and corners worn. 8°: [vol 1] A6 B-2I8 2K2, pag.: [10] 1-499; [vol 2] A4 B-2K8 2L6 , pag.: [6] 1-518 [6]; [vol 3] A4 B-2K8 2L2, pag.: [6] 1-465 [50]. Bookblock of all volumes in good condition. Except for the traces of use a good copy. The Scottish economist Adam Smith (1723-1790) was the most influential thinker in the history of capitalist economics. The publication of his book 'An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations' in 1776 established him as the single most influential figure in the development of modern economic theory. He describes the workings of a market economy, the division of labor in production, the nature of wealth in relation to money, the inability of governments to manage economies, and the difference between productive and nonproductive labor. Smith's standardwork was reprinted many times in the eightteenth and nineteenth centuries and also in more recent times his work is being published (even a full text electronic edition is available on the internet). The present set is a rare, early edition, printed in London in 1793, only few years after Smith's death. B0062. Economy; Philosophy.".

Tafeln 3 & 4. - Cox I, 77-78; Paulitschke 686 (nur Bd. 1-2); Schiötz 567 a&d; Estreicher XXII, 600 f. und Lipperheide Cl 6-7 (beide nur Band 3 wie vorliegend und franz. Ausg. für Bd. 1-2); vgl. Blackmer 946 und Griep-Luber 764 (beide nur Band 1-2 in franz. Ausg.). - Scarce first edition of La Motrayes main work in 2 vols, translated from French manuscript and published 4 years earlier than the common French edition. Collating against Schiötz (who is ignorant of pl. 36B) we have 4 folding maps and 43 (of 45, lacking 26B and 30) engr. plates, mostly folding or double-leaf. "The plates are of particular insterest and include many signed by Hogarth, which form part of his early work." (Blackmer). Lacking also 4 leaves subscribers' list. Added is the quite rare supplement (1732) in English and French with an account of La Motraye's travels in Eastern and Northern Europe with 7 (of 9) engr. plates amd maps (lacking an engraved and a half-title and 2 plates). Vol. 1 and 2 of important provenience: The family De Coucy became quite popular through "A Distant Mirror" by Barbara Tuchman. Tuchman tells the story of the 14th century along the biography of Enguerrand de Coucy VII. - A few tears to folding plates. 2 corners of main work restored, else a clean and broad-margined copy in contemp. calf, worn, rebacked. The supplementary vol. somewhat narrow-margined, slightly browned, inobtrusive water-staining to few quires, inscription cut out from title. This volume bound in contemp. calf, slighty rubbed. Together 3 vols. 5000 Gramm. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Mahometism fully explained: ... Written in Spanish and Arabick, in the year M.DC.III for the instruction of the Moriscoes in Spain ... Translated from the original manuscript, and illustrated with large explanatory notes by Mr. Morgan.

London, W. Mears (vol. 1); the author (vol. 2), 1723-1725.. 2 volumes. 8vo. XXVI, (6), 390; XVI, LXXXIV, 366, (2) pp. With 2 folding plates (including frontispiece) and a folding letterpress genealogical table. Further with woodcut head- and tailpieces and factotums (woodcut and built up from cast fleurons). Contemporary blind-tooled calf, each board in a panel design made with 2 rolls, with a cornerpiece at each corner, with the central and outer parts sprinkled and the area between not. Rebacked.. A thorough account of Islam and the life of the prophet Muhammad, based on a 1603 manuscript by the Morisco poet Muhammad Rabadan, translated and annotated by Joseph Morgan. The manuscript, written in a combination of Spanish and Aljamiado, was meant for the instruction of Moriscos, Muslims in parts of Al-Andalus (Spain) who were forced to convert to Christianity. They were expelled from Spain in the early 17th century. The text of the manuscript is followed by an account of the Moriscos by Joseph Morgan, which makes it particularly valuable. He quotes several contemporary sources, including a 1615 letter by al-Karim ibn Ali Perez, an expelled Morisco, who castigates the Spanish for their barbarous treatment of Muslims. The plates show Muslims in prayer and the Kaaba in Mecca. - Each title-page with owner's name, "S.M. Harrison". Slightly browned, some stains, bindings slightly worn and neatly rebacked. An important source for the history of the Moriscos. - ESTC T92870. Cf. Matar, Europe through Arab eyes, p. 14. For Morgan: Goodwin, "Morgan, Joseph (fl. 1707-1739)", in: ODNB (online ed.).

"Having observed in the Course of our English History many Attempts made (by the Ministers of some artful and designing Princes) to weaken and undermine the ancient, legal, and fundamental Rights, Liberties, and Privileges of the City and Citizens of London: I thought myself obliged to Endeavor to collect and ascertain such Laws, Customs, and Usages of the said City, Wherein the Original Constitution and Foundation of its Government seem to have been laid; and whereby its Happiness, Opulency, and Glory do (under God and his present Majesty) evidently subsist" (Preface). Though little is known about him personally, Bohun was an attorney and prolific author who published well-received treatises on legal education, pleading, ecclesiastical law and other subjects. Einband leicht berieben, vorderes Gelenk leicht gelockert, feines Ex. April 1728. Diese Erstausgabe von allergrößter Seltenheit. Einband leicht berieben, vorderes Gelenk leicht gelockert, feines Ex. [Attributes: First Edition]
