251 a 296. "It has been suggested that there were two Bouvards, one of them a count of St. John Lateran, composer of the violin sonatas, and the other an ordinary maître de musique, responsible for the other [mostly dramatic] works, but inferences to be drawn from the publications themselves contradict this. In 1723 Bouvard published in Paris his Premier livre de sonates à violon seule et la basse continue, and after that date he seems to have concentrated on his activities as a teacher and freelance composer, with considerable success to judge from the number of editions and some of their dedications... Bouvard?'s large body of work is notable for its diversity and the sudden breaks in his composing activity. His career at the Opéra, beginning brilliantly with Médus in 1702, came to an end in 1706 with the failure of Cassandre, and his first book of violin sonatas was never followed by a second."

Clay,, 1723. in a collection of ten principal authors who have written upon the five orders, viz. Palladio and Scamozzi, Serlio and Vignola, D. Barbaro and Cataneo, L. B. Alberti and Viola, Bullant and De Lorme, compared with one another. ... Written in French ... Made English for the Benefit of Builders. To which is added, An account of architects and architecture, ... With Leon Baptista Alberti's treatise of statues. By John Evelyn, Esq; Fellow of the Royal Society. The third edition, with the addition of The elements of architecture; collected by Sir Henry Wotton ... and also other large additions. Folio (347 × 225 mm). Contemporary English panelled calf, unlettered, skilfully rebacked with original spine laid down, corners repaired. Engraved portrait frontispiece, title vignette, 40 engraved plates in the text, title printed in red and black. Bettesworth ownership inscription at head. An excellent copy, a few trivial marks but generally clean and fresh throughout. Third edition of Evelyn's translation, the first with the addition of Wotton's Elements, the first English book of architecture. Evelyn had first encountered Fréart's book on its publication in 1650, when he was living in Paris, and he brought a copy back on his return to England in 1652. His desire for an English renaissance in the arts and sciences led him to participate in the founding of the Royal Society in 1661. The Parallel, concerned with the improvement of building, was of a piece with his Sylva (the improvement of timber), Fumifugium (a remedy for pollution by laying out squares and gardens), Sculptura (the first book in English on sculpture), and The Idea of Perfection in Painting, in serving Evelyn's aim to "be of service not only to Architects and Sculptors but to Our Painters also". His edition was first published in 1664.

Commentaries on the laws of England.

With the engraved "Table of Consanguinity" and folding "Table of Descents" in Volume II. Modern half - morocco and cloth boards, spine gilt in 6 compartments, a.e.g. With the bookplate of Louis E. Goodman on the paste - downs. An excellent copy. PMM, 212. FIRST EDITION of the author's great history of English law. Blackstone (1723 - 70) was the first to make the law accessible to the common person. "Blackstone's great achievement was to popularize the law and the traditions which had influenced its formation. If the English constitution survived the troubles of the next century, it was because the law had gained a new popular respect, and this was due in part to the enormous success of Blackstone's work" (PMM). "The Commentaries are not only a statement of the law of Blackstone's day, but the best history of English law as a whole which had yet appeared . . . the skillful manner in which Blackstone uses his authorities new and old, and the analogy of other systems of law, to illustrate the evolution of the law of his day, had a vast influence both in England and America, in implanting in the profession a sound tradition of the historical development of the law. . . ."

Dreiviertelfigur nach links an der Staffelei sitzend.

      - Schabkunstblatt von W. Baillie (1723-1792), nach einem Selbstbildnis, auf Bütten. 35,8:25,5 cm.
