Tsarskogo Velichestva ukaz, o vyshnikh i nizhikh sudakh i chelobitchikakh (His Royal Highness the Tsar's ukase, on high and low courts and petitioners)

St. Petersburg, May 4, 1720. Single folio leaf of laid paper with watermark and woodcut printer's device at the bottom (unresized, ca. 49 x 36 cm). Old crease marks; nicks and small tears along folds and edges; old moisture stains. This imperial decree (or ukase) was issued as an installment in Peter the Great’s long-running campaign to create efficiency in Russia’s bureaucratic governance. In particular, this decree directly recalls Peter’s attempts to streamline the unwieldly legal system of early modern Russia by putting into place systematic protocols for dealing with dissenting opinions in the judiciary. Such instances were apparently often referred to the body of one of Peter’s other great innovations, the Imperial Senate (a body which, as scholars like LeDonne and Vernandsky would later point out, suffered from a cardinal lack of direction from the Tsar, and was thus less than wholly effective). The great reformations of the Russian bureaucratic (and literary) idiom were still decades in the future and the language of this document reflects the florid chancery idiom of the late Tsardom of Muscovy, which was on the verge of growing into the Russian Empire (1721). A superb example of the reform spirit of Peter the Great’s administration and a substantial, and sometimes quite humorous, exemplar of the multi-faceted administrative reformations that made Peter the Great the wonder of his age. Ukases of the Petrine period were printed in small number and meant for distribution throughout Muscovy, and are thus scarce. This particular one is not found in Bitovt.

A Complete History of the Most Remarkable Transactions at Sea , from the Earliest Accounts of Time To the Conclusion of the Last War with France. Wherein Is given an Account of the most considerable Naval-Expeditions, Sea-Fights, Stratagems, Discoveries, and Other Maritime Occurrences that have happen'd among all Nations which have flourished at Sea: And in a more particular manner of Great Britain, from the time of the revolution, in the Year 1688, to the aforesaid Period

London: J. Walthoe, 1720. Small folio, engraved allegorical frontispiece, engraved portrait and nine engraved maps (some double-page and some folding) by Herman Moll, some of the maps lightly browned on account of different paper stock; title in red and black; a fine, clean and crisp copy in contemporary panelled calf, a little rubbed, spine almost invisibly repaired. First general naval history. A very handsome copy of the first general naval history published in the English language, with maps by the famous cartographer Hermann Moll, the engraver and cartographer who moved to England in 1678. Josiah Burchett (1666?-1746) worked for Samuel Pepys, until the two men fell out, after which he came under the patronage of Lord Admiral Edward Russell, serving on his flagship the 100-gun HMS Britannia at the battle of Barfleur in 1692. Burchett returned to a career in Parliament, and became Secretary to the Admiralty, a position he held for almost fifty years until he retired at the age of 76. By virtue of his position Burchett had access to the official reports of the Admiralty, which led him to first publish his Memoirs of Transactions at Sea during the War with France in 1703. It was not until 1720 that he published this greatly expanded work, a key source for naval historians and one of the classics of its age. Burchett surveys the history of shipping from its origins of navigation and the developments of the Egyptians, Phoenicians and Syrians, and continues right through to the most recent battles and engagements.

The History of New-England Containing an Impartial Account of the Civil and Ecclesiastical Affairs Of the Country To the Year of our Lord, 1700 . . . In 2 Volumes with Map

London: Printed for J. Clark, R. Ford, and R. Cruttenden, 1720. First Edition. Leather. Very Good. First Edition. Leather. 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall. Title continued: To which is added The Present State of New-England with a New and Accurate Map of the Country, And An Appendix Containing their Present Charter, their Ecclesiastical Discipline, and their Municipal Laws. See Howes N26, Sabin 52140, and Larned 991. 2 Volumes. Complete: Vol I contains 2 blank pages, 6-page dedication, 9-page preface, 2-page tabble of contents, map, and text pages to 330; Vol 2 contains 2 blank pages, text pages to 712, 15-page index, 1advertising page, and 1 blank page. Leather covers with five-raised bands and bordered with debossed decorations. Clean pages with no markings or stains; one short, marginal bookworm hole in each text block. The hand-colored map has been professionally backed with Japanese tissue mending several minor fold splits. In addition to using the works of the Mathers and other New England writers, Neal incorporated much information from pamphlets, letters, and personal inquiries into this work. "His work was, therefore, superior to anything of the kind that preceded it. . . . Though he deals chiefly with political, military, and religious questions, he has an interesting chapter, largely condensed from Josselyn, describing the state of New England; and he has paid some attention to legislative history, as an abridgment of the laws and ordinances of New England, which is printed in his appendix, attests. His style is often sprightly and he displays a sense of humor. For some aspects of the revolution of 1688-9 his work is still useful." See Larned, Literature of American History, 991. Very light wear to cover. A very attractive set.
