[HERALDRY - MANUSCRIPT - KOEKELBERG]. VOS, Joannes de, and Jan Paulus van HAMME.
[4 blank], [41], [4 blank], [15], [4 blank], [16], [306 blank] pp.A heraldic manuscript and register, in Dutch, of the Catholic Broederschap van het Allerheiligste Sacrament des Authaers (Brotherhood of the Most Holy Sacrament of the Altar) at the Chapel of Saint Anne in Koekelberg (in the parish of Berghem St. Agatha), from its establishment in 1721 to 1825 and from its revival in 1841 to 1868, with additions in 1905 and from 1928 to 1944. The 5 spectacular armorial pages (each drawing 35.5 x 22 cm to 30 x 20 cm) show the arms of “erfproosten” (hereditary provosts) of the Brotherhood, Lords of Koekelberg and the Archbishop of Mechelen, all executed in coloured gouaches with extensive gold and some silver. The 8 preliminary leaves and one additional armorial leaf are written and drawn on vellum (including the five armorial pages), while the rest of the manuscript is on laid paper. The title-page notes the establishment of the brotherhood in 1721 but suggests the manuscript was begun in 1734, though its list of the “proosten” (provosts) begins with 1721 and one of the coats of arms also notes the year 1721.The Archbishop of Mechelen's letter reëstablishing the Brotherhood in 1841 begins a new section of the manuscript covering the years 1842 to 1868 that records not only the provosts but also in most years the members. The manuscript includes new articles drawn up in 1905, along with numbered lists of the various ways to earn full (17) or partial (9) indulgence. But there are no further records of the Brotherhood until what appear to be lists of the members from 1928 to 1944. … [Click Below for Full Description]

TORELLI, Guiseppe.
117, [3 blank]; XIV, [2], 139, [2], [1 blank]; XVI, 208 pp.Three important 18th-century mathematical first editions, together in one volume.Ad 1: First (and only?) edition of a text book on infinitesimal geometry by Guiseppe Torelli (1721-1781), a wide-ranging Veronese scholar best known for his works on geometry. His De nihilo geometrico presents a new basis for infinitesimal analysis, which had been started but not exhaustively treated by Newton and Leibniz. His rejection of the concept of limits and his support of the ideas of Bernard Nieuwentijt against Leibniz caused his work to be largely ignored in modern times. Ad 2: First and only edition of another work on infinitesimal geometry, the first major work of the Italian mathematician Girolamo Saladini (1731-1813), with full references to Newton and Leibniz. Saladini's work is divided into three parts, the first giving axioms and theorems, and the other two with 16 and 18 propositions respectively, the last part closing with three "scholia". Though little known today, Saladini together with Vicenzo Riccati published the first extensive treatise on integral calculus in their Institutiones analyticae (1765-1767), pre-dating Euler.Ad 3: First edition of the mathematical works of Lazare Carnot (1753-1823), much better known than the treatises of Torelli and Saladini above. The book begins with his "Essai sur les machines en général", which contains his famous theorem on the loss of kinetic energy during inelastic collisions. Divided into two parts, the book contains all the elements of engineering mechanics: the first truly … [Click Below for Full Description]

[KERSTEMAN, Franciscus Lievens].
[8], 207, [1 blank] pp.First and only edition of Kersteman's extremely rare "histoire scandaleuse", describing the flagrant life of Madame de Pompadour (1721-1764), mistress of Louis XV. The book is described on the title-page and in the preface as a defence against the slanderous biographies published by the French and English. This apparently couldn't convince the French ambassador Louis Augustin d'Affry, who had, immediately after publication, destroyed the full run after buying all available copies for their full price, to defend Madame de Pompadour her good name. With modern bookplate on pastedown. The engraved frontispiece is possibly transferred from another work and has a small restored tear in the margins. Faint dampstain in the last quire and a few spots throughout. Good untrimmed copy. The original wrappers soiled, but the vellum very good.l Buisman 1029; STCN (2 copies); Ter Horst no. X; Waller 745.

[PRINTS - RUSSO-SWEDISH WAR]. MARTIN le jeune, Pierre-Denis.
[Battle scenes from the Russo-Swedish or Great Northern War].[Saint Petersburg], [Saint Petersburg], [Imperial Printing Office?], [engraved in Paris ca. 1721-1724, printed in Saint Petersburg, 19th century]. Oblong Imperial 1mo (full-sheet leaves) (ca. 55 x 76 cm). A complete series of 4 very large prints (pictorial image ca. 52 x 72 cm) on wove paper, engraved by Nicolas Martin Larmessin, Maurice Baquoy and Charles-Louis Simonneau after paintings and drawings by Pierre-Denis Martin le jeune, each with a 3-line Russian caption in large grazhdanskii (civil) cyrillic lettering by the map engraver Claude-Auguste Berey. [4] engraved prints. Complete series of four spectacular engraved views of Peter the Greats most important victorious battles in the Russo-Swedish War, also known as the Great Northern War (1700-1721). They celebrate the Russian defeat of Sweden and present Russia to the world as a great European power. Peter the Great (1672-1725) commissioned paintings of these battles from the Paris painter Pierre-Denis Martin le jeune (1663?-1742) as well as the series of four enormous prints based on Martins paintings by the Paris engravers Nicolas Martin Larmessin (1640-1725), Charles-Louis Simonneau (1645-1728) and Maurice Baquoy (1675-1747) in Paris. For this Saint Petersburg printing, about a centimetre was cut off the foot of each plate, removing the French imprint with the names of the artist and engravers. The plates were never further revised, so the present set, like nearly all sets show the plates in this second state. The present set, however, is printed on thick … [Click Below for Full Description]

HAKURYUSHI, Kanda
[Japan]: 1721. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An interesting Edo and Meiji woodblock-print of 'New Blades.' This collection is the stamping of amateur warriors' blades and polishers throughout the Edo period and is equivalent to the sword of the Meiji era and later called "modern sword.". It follows up on the older collections of blade writings which summarized the accumulated knowledge of amateur warriors' blades and polishers throughout the Muromachi period. After the battle of Sekigahara in Keicho 4 (AD 1599), the Tokugawa shogunate opened and war ended, demand and production methods for swords changed, and later works came to be called "new swords." This 'New Blades' book includes information on large and small swords, knives, tools for forgings, polishing, and repairing, as well as stamps of sword makers and the illustrious line patterns between the edge and spine called the Hamon. This rare 1721 edition is written in a column handwritten format with furigana usage for easier reading. This edition contains excellent illustrations of different blades throughout!

BOBIN, Isaac (George Clark)
1721. A contemporary, probably retained copy of a three-page holographic letter dated October 1721 written by Isaac Bobin, private secretary to the Honorable George Clarke, who was the Secretary for the Province of New York from 1718 to 1730. The two 8.25" x 12.75" leaves were formerly horizontally folded in quarters and are fragile at the folds, with some general toning, minor splitting at a few of the folds, and a bit of chipping to the extremities, not affecting the content of the letter. The letter roughly delineates the boundary between Orange and Ulster Counties in the province of New York by an Act of the Assembly of the Province. In the top right corner of the document is written "duplicate" and on the bottom of the page is written "Justice of Ulster County," presumably making this copy of the letter the one delivered to the officials in Ulster. In the letter, Bobin reports that the division line between the two counties will run from the mouth of Murderers Creek westward and into the woods as far as the Delaware River. Owing to the continuing ambiguity of the division and the increasing number of settlers to the region, Bobin reports that Secretary Clarke asks that five or more leaders from Ulster meet on November 20 at the Court House of the County of Ulster to decide who will meet with their counterpart from Orange County and other interested parties at the city of New York on the last Tuesday in March to finalize the boundaries of the two counties. This letter is not included in *Letters of Isaac Bobin, Esq.* published by J. Munsell, Albany, New York, 1872.
