KANDA, Ryoko
Yoshiemon Tsujii: Kanbei Takai, 1721. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. An interesting Edo and Meiji woodblock-print of 'New Blade Maker's List.' This collection is the stamping of amateur warriors' blades and polishers throughout the Edo period and is equivalent to the sword of the Meiji era and later called "modern sword.". It follows up on the older collections of blade writings which summarized the accumulated knowledge of amateur warriors' blades and polishers throughout the Muromachi period. After the battle of Sekigahara in Keicho 4 (AD 1599), the Tokugawa shogunate opened and war ended, demand and production methods for swords changed, and later works came to be called "new swords." This rare 1721 edition is written in a column handwritten format with furigana usage for easier reading. This edition contains excellent illustrations of different blades throughout!

AUBREY (John)
London: Printed for A. Bettesworth and J. Battley. J. Pemberton. and E. Curll, 1721. 8vo, 196 x 114 mms., pp. [ii], x [xi - xiv dedication, xv blank, xvi engraving], 236. with various annotations and emendations in a contemporay hand on several pages, contemporary panelled calf, rebacked with old spine laid down. Given that this was the only book that John Aubrey (1626 - 1697) published in his lifetime, in 1696, it is not surprising that his reputation began to be firmly establish in the scholarly canon in the last century. As Adam Fox remarks, in ODNB, " The reasons for the overlooking or undervaluing of his importance are varied. As with so many people of genuine originality, much of what he achieved went unrecognized by contemporaries because unorthodox. Moreover his reputation long suffered as a consequence of the bitter and unfair remarks made about him by Anthony Wood following Wood's prosecution for libelling the first earl of Clarendon in his Athenae Oxonienses on the basis of information supplied to him by Aubrey. In addition the range and breadth of Aubrey's work was insufficiently known. Of all his writings only the Miscellanies appeared in print during his lifetime and this gave later generations with no taste for 'hermetick philosophy' the occasion to brand him as credulous and superstitious." This second edition made its way into print after a copy of the first edition, with emendations and corrections in Aubrey's hand was sold at auction on 261 July 1720 and it was "Corrected for the Press by Mr Aubrey, wherein were many very considerable Alterations, Correct … [Click Below for Full Description]

N’hésitez pas à nous contacter directement pour plus d’information, nous parlons français. DOS HOJAS. TWO SHEETS. París, 1721 49.5 x 64.7 cm. (hoja superior), 49.5 x 66.7 cm. [Click Below for Full Description]

BASTON,THOMAS
Carington Bowles, 1721. A rare and beautiful series of prints of the ships that built an empire. “During the first quarter of the eighteenth century there flourished Thomas Baston, who deserves our attention because he has left us some very spirited illustrations of English men-of-war. Himself a seascape painter, he also did a few etchings from his own designs, but some of his pictures were engraved by Harris, Kirkall, and others. This desirable Baston series is entitled Twenty-two Prints of several of the Capital ships of his Majesties Royal Navy, which will be found in the Print Room of the British Museum.” Thomas Baston’s view of The Greenland Fishery (1721) is a wonderful piece of engraving after his drawing of an Arctic Scene. Baston had been a Clerk of the Admiralty during the late 1690s, when his brother Samuel became a significant whistle blower over corruption within the Navy. Soon afterwards, Thomas Baston began producing remarkable drawings of Royal Navy vessels complete with grandiloquent dedications to royalty and numerous Admiralty Dignitaries. He would continue to do so over the next decade and more as his brother pressed repeatedly in print for virtuous wartime government demands for which he was imprisoned and ultimately identified as the king’s potential assassin! Given Thomas Baston’s beautifully calligraphed petitions to the Crown for financial assistance, his repeated involvement in extraordinarily ambitious commercial print projects (such as the whaling scene). He had a long spell in a debtor’s prison during the 1710-14, and would seem to have lost his … [Click Below for Full Description]

Care, Henry
Boston: Printed by J. Franklin, for N. Buttolph, B. Eliot, and D. Henchman, 1721. FIRST AMERICAN EDITION. This volume, one of the very first law books printed in colonial America, contains the first American printing of Magna Carta and other fundamental documents of individual liberty in Anglo-American law. Magna Carta has become a sacred text, the nearest approach to an irrepealable fundamental statute that England has ever had (Pollock & Maitland). Care intended his English Liberties to provide uneducated and inexperienced English persons with documents and information about the law and their rights praising England s fundamental laws [as] coeval with government and describing the Magna Charta as Declaratory of the principal grounds of the Fundamental Laws and Liberties of England. Celebrating law in another piece as second only to the gospel, he described it in English Liberties as the Best Birthright the Subject hath Care regarded the essence of this birthright as the privilege not to be exempt from the law of the land, but to be freed in Person and Estate from Arbitrary Violence and Oppression (Morrison & Zook, Revolutionary Currents). In America, English Liberties played an important role in spreading concepts about English law, history, government, liberties and especially juries Colonists found in Care s English Liberties support of their views about the Saxons, Magna Charta as a reaffirmation of old laws guaranteeing the rights of all freemen, and ways to protect themselves against oppression (Schwoerer, Ingenious Mr. Henry Care). English Liberties had more to do w … [Click Below for Full Description]
