With a hatched roman capital used as an initial. Set in roman types with extensive italic. Modern boards covered with chemical-marbled paper, black morocco spine label. 8 pp. Extremely rare contemporary account of the audiences of the first Ottoman ambassador to the Holy Roman Empire before the Emperor himself and before Prince Eugene of Savoy, both in the year 1719. This signalled the beginning of the attempted transition from war to negotiation in the ever difficult relations between the great Islamic and Christian powers. The Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI (1685-1740) conducted the successful Austro-Turkish War against the Ottoman Empire in the years 1716 to 1718, lead by Prince Eugene of Savoy (1663-1736). After the Treaty of Passarowitz ended the war on 21 July 1718 the Ottoman Sultan Ahmed III sent Ibrahim Pasha to Vienna to serve as Ambassador and Charles VI sent Count Hugo von Virmont to Constantinople as Ambassador to the Sultan. This exchange of ambassadors was celebrated with a grand ceremony near the border where the two ambassadors met o … [Click Below for Full Description]

[PLAN - AMSTERDAM CITY HALL]. [CAMPEN, Jacob van].
Le pavé de la grand' sale des bourgeois. [Amsterdam, Gerard Valk, 1719]. Very large engraved folding plan comprising 1 1/2 sheets (measuring 46 x 83 cm as assembled), engraved by Danckert Danckertsz. and his father after drawings by Jacob Vennekool, including the two hemispheres of the world map and a celestial map of the constellations of the northern hemisphere (each 10 cm in diameter). Very large engraved plan showing the extraordinary cartographic mosaic floor of the Burgerzaal of the Amsterdam City Hall, designed by Jacob van Campen, with a celestial map in the centre and the magnificent map of the world in 2 hemispheres on either side. The engraving was first published in 1661, and the map shows Tasman's recent discoveries in Australia and Tasmania, and depicts California as an island. Many discoveries from his second voyage remained otherwise unpublished until the end of the 17th-century. This engraved representation is all that is left of this cartographical work of art. Wear caused by people walking on the mosaic meant it had to be restored about a hundred years later. When in turn this restoration was damaged the two hemispheres were filled in with plain marble slabs without pictorial representation. The drawing of the floor was made by Jacob Vennekool who worked closely with Van Campen, and since his drawings were first published even before the building was completed, they may reflect Van Campen's plan more closely than the finished building itself. They also, of course, show it before the alterations made at various times in later years.Slightly wrinkled in the … [Click Below for Full Description]

Merian, Maria Sybille
1719/40, Amsterdam. Copper engraving, finely hand colored, published in the famous series ‘Over de Voortteeling en Wonderbaerlyke veranderingen der Surinaemsche Insecten’ by Maria Sybilla Merian. A fine engraving from Maria Sybilla Merian’s classic work. Maria Sybilla Merian, daughter of the German engraver and publisher Matthäus Merian, devoted herself to the study of European insects and their metamorphoses. As a result of the wealth of tropical varieties being brought back by the Dutch West Indies Company, she decided to visit the Dutch colony of Surinam herself to study and paint the insect life there. She sailed with her daughter Dorothea in June 1699 from Amsterdam and remained in Surinam until 1701. Also Maria Sybilla Merian’s elder daughter Johanna went to Surinam to complete her mothers work. Most of the plates were engraved by P. Sluyter and J. Mulder, some by P. Stoopendal. In very good to excellent condition. A tiny rust spot and minor spots outside the image of the print. 390 by 290mm (15¼ by 11½ inches).

Assemanus, Joseph Simonius
Typis Scarae Congregationis de Propaganda Fide, Rome, 1719. Three large volumes, bound in vellum (with some dust-soiling on covers), Discreet library stamps of a Dublin religious institution partially faded so I cannot make it out, folded frontispiece illustration in volume 1. There is some dustiness and some occasional foxing, throughout, apparently from the volumes being too loosely stacked on the library shelf. The text is otherwise clean and sound, with no markings I would guess that they were rarely, if ever, consulted.Volume 1 is titled De Scriptoribus Syris Orthodoxis, with preface and other introductory material not paginated, then 648 pages in Latin and Syriac text, and an errata leaf. Volume 2, De Scriptorinus Syris Monophysitis, is dated 1721, has a lengthy introduction (unpaginated) on the Monophysites, and 546 paginated pages on the documents, plus 2-page errata slip. Volume 3, dated 1725, it titled Tomus Tertii Pars Prima, De Scriptoribus Syris Nestorianus, has unpaginated introductory material, then 709 pages in Latin, Syriac and Arabic scripts. The fourth volume, completing the Nestorian section, which was published in 1728, is lacking. Size: Folio [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

PETTY, Sir William.
London: printed for D. Browne, W. Mears, F. Clay, and J. Hooke, , 1719. This, perhaps, is the best of Petty's works" Octavo (198 x 121 mm). Contemporary panelled calf, sympathetically rebacked to style, red morocco label to spine, new endpapers using old laid paper. Contents browned and a little creased, a couple of signatures standing slightly proud, title page tipped in, short gutter with text very close to hinge. A good copy. Second edition, corrected and enlarged, following initial publication in 1691 under the title The Political Anatomy of Ireland. "Petty wrote his Political Anatomy of Ireland about 1671 after his second long stay in the country. It provides a wide survey of Irish institutions and government with much statistical evidence... the volume concludes with Verbum Sapienti, a short treatise in ten chapters called by Petty 'A Discourse about Taxes and the value of People', being an assessment of the wealth of the nation and its capacity to pay taxes" (Keynes, p. 34). "This, perhaps, is the best of Petty's works; and is valuable alike for the authentic information it affords respecting the state of Ireland in the latter part of the 17th century, and for the judicious suggestions of the author with a view to its improvement" (McCulloch, The Literature of Political Economy, p. 211). The second edition included an additional "The Present State of Ireland" listing the principal political officers in 1719. Goldsmiths', 5514; ESTC T149613; Keynes 35.

TRIVETI, Nicolai. [TRIVET or TREVET, Nicholas]
Oxonii [Oxford]: e Theatro Sheldoniano, 1719. 8vo. (26), 347, (1, 32 index followed by postscript) pp. Late 18th century dark green straight grain morocco, spine with raised bands, gilt lettered to two panels with ornate decoration to the other compartments, gilt tooled rosettes with flower and leaf stems to the corners of each board, the ciphered initials "P.S." to the upper cover and the motto "Vincit et Patitur" to the lower board in gilt, gilt inner dentelles, mustard coloured endpapers, all edges gilt. Frontispiece portrait. Binding slightly rubbed, some very light spotting to the front and rear leaves, else a most handsome copy. The binding has sometime been attributed to the noted binder Roger Payne, his name is pencilled on one of the front endpapers though nowhere is the binding signed. Certainly the binding has the appearance of his work and, specifically, the cornerpieces are very reminiscent of devices that he used. Nicholas Trivet (c.1257 - c.1334) was a Dominican friar and scholar. Manuscripts exist of various works by him, though this is one of the few that subsequently ever made it into print. The work chronicles the history of the early Plantagenet dynasty, from King Stephen to Edward I. This edition is edited by Anthony Hall, an Oxford scholar who had previously edited a 1709 edition of the work of the English antiquarian John Leland "Commentarii de Scriptoribus Britannicis". His postscript at the rear of the volume indicates his intention to publish the continuation of the manuscript from which he was working, the "Annalium Continuatio" appeared 3 years l … [Click Below for Full Description]

Tardieu after Charles Coypel, engraved vignette on title-page by C. Simeneau after N. XLII, [4], 358, [2] pp. First edition of a famous French fable book, beautifully illustrated by the most famous artists of the day. The book contains 100 fables by Antoine Houdar de La Motte (1672-1731), modelled after the fables by Jean de La Fontaine, the most important French fable author ever. He intends to rival both Aesop and La Fontaine. The book at the same time represents a milestone in French book illustration, introducing Rococo miniatures or vignettes, including 62 by the interior and costume designer Claude Gillon, one of his few works as a book-illustrator. The "Actor's fable" is dedicated to him.Binding rubbed with a few small defects; some slight staining and thumbing. Very good copy. The FIRST & ONLY EDITION of this hilarious work, written within the context of a pamphlet war between physician Richard Mead (1673-1754) and the naturalist and physician John Woodward (1665-1728) over how to treat smallpox. Earlier in the same year, the two doctors had come to blows outside of Gresham College, London. The story begins by the anonymous author (ESTC attributes the work to Mead) comparing Woodward to Cervantes. "The Beginning of this ingenious Performance put me in Mind of Don Quixote's good Squire Sancho, whose favourite Maxim was, that the Belly kept up the Heart, and not the Heart the Belly. I won't say the Doctor stole this Notion from that merry Gentleman, because I believe I shall prove presently that the Author of Don Quixote was also the Author of the State of Physick [Woodword's work]." ORWELL, George.
1719. 20 November 1940-17 Jul 1967. Orwell and his publisher 10 carbon copies of letters, 1 internal note, 4 typed letters signed, 1 photograph. Housed in a green flat-back cloth box by the Chelsea Bindery. Minor creasing and old staple marks, photograph torn. In very good condition. A collection of documents from the archive of Victor Gollancz, the first publisher of George Orwell, regarding the publication of his books. The archive of Victor Gollancz was sold by the firm's parent company in recent years, from whom the material was directly acquired. The contents include carbon copies of letters sent from Gollancz to Orwell and his literary executor Leonard Moore in November 1940 asking if future novels will be forthcoming, and company records regarding the print status of the books. Of note is that in a preserved carbon copy of a letter to Moore, regarding the possibilities of publishing new editions after the war, Gollancz states that he has the "highest admiration for Orwell's work"; however, in a 1956 reply to a college student asking for anecdotes of Orwell, Gollancz says that "Incidentally, I think Orwell is enormously over-rated" - an astonishing admission by the man who brought Orwell to print, established his reputation, and brought his works to a wide left-wing audience. Also included is a copy of a document dated 12 June 1950, recording that the literary executors of Orwell's estate after his death was now A. C. Heath & Company, and letters from Orwell's widow Sonia Orwell requesting copies of any Orwell correspondence that Gollancz has. Finally, there is a to … [Click Below for Full Description]

Chiquet (Jacques) [Antoine Menard]
Paris: chez Chereanau, [1719]. Oblong small 4to. Full vellum with ties. Wear at edges, chip from fore-edge of lower front cover, blank end leaves are heavily annotated and written-upon in 18th & 19th century hands. Old stains to margins and a few maps, old paper-tape repairs to the verso of the Asia map, but generally very good. Engraved allegorical title page, 3 plates (two of globes), and 24 maps opposite explanatory text in French. 23 maps have contemporary hand-colouring in outline; a couple have attractively coloured cartouches. The Globe Terrestre map, of two hemispheres, is holed, slightly affecting the title. The map of North America shows California as an island. This is the second or third edition of this atlas, originally by Antoine Menard, first published by Chiquet in [1711 & 1713], with most of the maps dated 1709-1711. In this 1719 edition Chiquet has removed Menard's name entirely; on many of the maps (such as L'Amerique Septentrionale) he has changed it to his own name and altered the date to 1719.

DE GOLS, Gerard (c. 1676-1737)
[Circa 1719]. Slim octavo (172 mm x 114 mm). Title to front cover, dedication leaf, 21 leaves with text to rectos only. Sheets stitched together with green ribbon, turned and frayed with some loss to page edges. Gerard de Gols was a first-generation Dutch immigrant. He was educated at St. Paul's School, London and matriculated at Trinity College, Cambridge in 1693. He became Rector of St Peter's, Sandwich, Kent, (1713-37) and minister to the local Dutch congregation. One of the persons appointed by the Corporation to support the canopies at the coronation of George II. ESTC records nine titles by Gerard de Gols: the earliest was a book of poetry Samson, or The unhappy lover (1696). This was later followed by sermons, a theological treatise A vindication of the worship of the Lord Jesus Christ (1726), and in the following year, A theologico-philosophical dissertation concerning worms in all parts of human bodies, (influenced by Andry's famous book on the subject). This manuscript, entitled "The Spiritual Watch", was never published and its very personal, intimate feel suggest De Gols never intended it for print publication. It is dedicated to "Mrs Ayme Courthope" (1652-1742/3). She was the mother of five children and having reached the age of 90, she appears to have outlived them all. She was buried at Stodmarsh, Kent. De Gols' text takes the passage from Mark 13:37, "And what I say unto you I say unto all, Watch", he commences, "Our Blessed Saviour in this Chapter tells his disciples of that dreadful Judgement which would come upon the Jews for their unbelief". But his targ … [Click Below for Full Description]

Assemanus, Joseph Simonius
Rome: Typis Scarae Congregationis de Propaganda Fide, 1719. The fourth volume, completing the Nestorian section, which was published in 1728, is lacking.. First Edition. Full-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Folio.

[Photo album]. Zelia, Martha (compiler).
Various: Unpublished, 1917 -1922, 1719. Compiled in various locations apparently by Martha Zelia, unpublished. Oblong quarto (7.75" 12") containing 52 pages using the front pastedown & 38 pages to present a series of photographs, real photo postcards (18), photomechanical postcards, watercolors (5 full page), & related ephemera, each with inscription mostly in German (at least one in Cyrillic) from circus performers, many specifically directed to Ms. Zelia. The entries are dated between 1917 to 1922 & include performers from Circus Orlando, Cirque de Paris, & Cirkus Miehe. The album is quite worn: spine perished, all but one tissue guard lacking, rubbed, scraped, a few leaves detached or detaching, toned, foxed, & stained.Although not certain, we believe the compiler was herself a performer, perhaps a trapeze artist. Contributors include:Kathi Gultini (juggler); Alfred Uferini (magician); Louise Fleuron (singer); The Crastonians (Vic, Joe, & Lulu); Albert A. Van de Velde (composer); Milly Capell (horse & dog act); La Ferrand ("Jongleuse"); Stanley Bros.; Ben Omar; and others.
