A full & particular description & account of all the Cities, Borough-Towns, Towns-Corporate & their Arms, Antiquity, Charte

Printed and Sold by Tho Bowles, London 1720 - 4to; [6], 273, [1]pp. Bound in contemporary full English paneled calf, sympathetically rebacked, the spine with five raised bands ruled in gilt and a new red morocco lettering piece gilt; all edges speckled red. First edition, first issue, of this fully and finely engraved road atlas of England and Wales, with 273 maps patterned after the 17th-century versions of John Ogilby. Scarce first issue, with "next ye King of Spain in S: Katherines" in the imprint statement (later issues read "near ye Stairs in St. Katherine’s"). First Edition points as follows: p. 8, Sussex 'rapes' [administrative boundaries] not numbered; p.128 misnumbered '121' (a later owner has added lines to the numeral '1' making it look like an '8'; p.141 showing a coat of arms in the text at bottom right showing three trefoils in a bend or diagonal bar. Shirley I, 278-80. Hodson 149. Tooley, 83. Lister, 62. A smaller, popular version of John Ogilby's famous road atlases of England, originally published in 1675 in a folio edition entitled: Britannia: or an Illustration of the Kingdom of England and Dominion of Wales. Ogilby's survey was perhaps the most accurate to date; he used the new distance of 1760 yards to a mile instead of the old standard of 2428 yards and calculated measurements methodically by foot. Due to public demand for these accurate strip road maps in a format conducive to travel, several smaller versions were published, with the present edition being one of the most successful. Emanuel Bowen was official map engraver to both George II and Louis XV of France, producing some of the finest and most intricately engraved English county maps of his time. His popular, conveniently sized Britannia Depicta went through three printings the first year. It contains 54 county maps and associated suites of strip road maps spread over 273 plates. An all-together elaborate production, in Fine, clean, bright condition, each map fully and elaborately engraved by Emanuel Bowen and enhanced with little-known historical facts (supplied by the antiquarian John Owen), elaborate heraldic images, rococo cartouches and decorative borders.       Printed for & sold by Tho. Bowles. 1720 - FIRST EDITION, engraved throughout, with engraved title-page (a trifle browned), 2 preliminary leaves of tables, 200 strip road maps, 54 county or part county maps, the majority in clean crisp condition, 2 plates of College arms, numerous coats of arms, numeral to p. 10 shaved, short tear in fore-margin of pp. 245-6 just entering plate but not affecting any printing, pp. [vi], 273, small 4to, contemporary panelled calf, a patch of insect damage with loss of surface on upper cover, a few small abrasions to lower cover, corners slightly worn, crack at head of upper joint, headcap worn, lacking label, very good An excellent copy of the rare first edition: in particular, this is a tall copy; at 8 1/16 inches it is almost an inch taller than the dimension given by Chubb. It has the following first issue points: no notice of Stony Stratford on p. 53, the numbering is in the left-hand corner of p. 121, p. 128 is misnumbered 121 (here corrected in ink).Owen and Bowen appear to have been in great demand since four editions were published between 1720 and 1724. It was a smaller, popular version of John Ogilby's famous road maps of England, which were originally published in folio in 1675 as ‘Britannia: or an Illustration of the Kingdom of England and Dominion of Wales’. Ogilby's survey was perhaps the most accurate to date. He used the new distance of 1760 yards to a mile instead of the old standard of 2428 yards and calculated distances methodically by foot. Several smaller versions where published, although Ogilby’s own was the most successful, going through a number of editions and reprints well past the middle of the century. Each page is engraved, and provided with printed annotations and coats of arms. (Chubb CXLVII; Fordham pp.18-19; ESTC N15579)

One plate loosely inserted, 2 with sections of blank margins torn away, some other clean tears occasionally affecting the image area. Else very good. A very rare economics work in which are reprinted a collection of the contemporary satirical texts and prints relating to the financial exploits of John Law and his infamous Mississippi scheme of 1717-20, events connected with the founding of a viable colony in Louisiana. "John Law (bap. 21 April 1671 - 21 March 1729) was a Scottish economist who believed that money was only a means of exchange that did not constitute wealth in itself, and that national wealth depended on trade. He is said to be the father of finance, responsible for the adoption or use of paper money or bills in the world today. Law was a gambler and a brilliant mental calculator, and was known to win card games by mentally calculating the odds. An expert in statistics, he was the originator of economic theories, including two major ideas: 'The Scarcity Theory of Value' and the 'Real bills doctrine'" (Wikipedia). The present work records the economic crisis precipitated by Law. The crisis had its origins in the decision of the French regent, Philippe d'Orléans, to appoint John Law the Controller General of Finances for France. In "May 1716 the Banque Générale Privée ('General Private Bank'), which developed the use of paper money was set up by Law. It was a private bank, but three quarters of the capital consisted of government bills and government accepted notes. In August 1717, he bought the Mississippi Company, to help the French colony in Louisiana. In 1717 he also brokered the sale of Thomas Pitt's diamond to the regent, Philippe d'Orléans. In the same year Law floated the Mississippi Company as a joint stock trading company called the Compagnie d'Occident which was granted a trade monopoly of the West Indies and North America. The bank became the Banque 1718, meaning the notes were guaranteed by the king. The Company absorbed the Compagnie des Indes Orientales, Compagnie de Chine, and other rival trading companies and became the Compagnie Perpetuelle des Indes on 23 May 1719 with a monopoly of commerce on all the seas. The system however encouraged speculation in shares in 'The Company of the Indies' (the shares becoming a sort of paper currency). In 1720 the bank and company were united and Law was appointed Controller General of Finances to attract capital. Law's pioneering note- issuing bank was extremely successful until it collapsed and caused an economic crisis in France and across Europe. "Law exaggerated the wealth of Louisiana with an effective marketing scheme, which led to wild speculation on the shares of the company in 1719. In February 1720 it was valued for a very high future cash flow at 10,000 livres. Shares rose from 500 livres in 1719 to as much as 15,000 livres in the first half of 1720, but by the summer of 1720, there was a sudden decline in confidence, leading to a 97 per cent decline in market capitalization by 1721. Predictably, the 'bubble' burst at the end of 1720, when opponents of the financier attempted en masse to convert their notes into specie. By the end of 1720 Philippe II dismissed Law, who then fled from France." GOLDSMITHS 5829. KRESS 3217. MULLER 3535. SABIN 28932. A.H.       Leipzig. . 1720 - [6],84pp. plus folding map. Modern antique paneled calf, gilt. Faint stain in upper margin of text, moderate age- toning. A very good copy. The rare first edition of HISTORISCHE UND GEOGRAPHISCHE BESCHREIBUNG, designed to further the schemes of John Law and the Mississippi Company, riding the crest of the South Sea Bubble before the crash of that scheme the following year. This is the first of three editions published in 1720, with the later two entitled AUFSFURLICHE BESCHREIBUNG. The present copy does not contain the portrait called for by Sabin and Howes which is present in the copies at Yale, UCLA, and the University of Wisconsin- Madison, but which is not mentioned in EUROPEAN AMERICANA, and the copies at Trinity College and the William Clements Library appear to be complete without it. The map, "Louissana am Fluss Missisippi," provides a slightly fore- shortened cartographic view of the watershed of the Mississippi from around the Canadian border to the Gulf of Mexico. Natchez and other French outposts up the Mississippi are shown, as well as New Orleans and other settlements on the lower river. The Illinois River and the French fort on it in what is now central Illinois are also shown. It is an interesting and significant map. The book is a general collection of material about Louisiana, drawn from Hennepin and from the promotional claims of the Mississippi Company. It paints a rosy picture of the prospects for and future of Louisiana and the venture there. The text concludes with a poem concerning the Mississippi Company. All editions are rare. SABIN 32104. In a half morocco and cloth slipcase. This volume is rich in interest, being drawn from material which originally appeared in the fifth volume of Jean Bernard's RECUEIL DE VOYAGES AU NORD. It consists of Henri Tonti's DERNIERES DECOUVERTES., here in the second French edition, one of the most important 17th-century French narratives of the Mississippi Valley; Hennepin's VOYAGE.ENTRE LA MER GLACIALE, a later edition of his second book; RELATION DE LA LOUISIANE OU MISSISSIPPI., published here for the first time, an anonymous officer's account of a visit of several months in 1717, "an interesting narrative of the Indians, French settlers, natural history and products, and trade, especially with the Indians" (Clark); and a short summary of the voyages of Gosnold and Pringe. These narratives are accompanied by fourteen plates of Indians, based on John White's illustrations in De Bry, which do not appear in the regular set. First Editions in Dutch (also published with French text). Profusely illustrated relation of the 1735 jubilee commemorating the (antisemitic) legend about sacrilegious attacks by Jews on the sacred Hosts in 1369, with remarkable architecture plates (some signed by Harrewijn and Krafft). Illustrated with 26 (20, 6) etched plates in armorial rococo woodcut borders and 24 (18, 6) etched pl. Representing triumphal arches (1 with "Manneken-Pis"), 4 folding (2 torn). Woodcut front. & 2 folding plates. Issued to commemorate the three hundred and fiftieth anniversary celebrations of the 'Holy Sacrament of Miracles' in the city of Brussels; the second volume contains details regarding the jubilee of 1735. According to the legend, in 1370 on Good Friday, a number of consecrated hosts were stolen from the tabernacle of the church of St. Catherine by several Jews, who took them to their synagogue. There the Hosts were desecrated, and miraculously began to bleed. The thieves were found out and punished by being burned alive at the stake. Each year, on the Sunday after July 15, a procession is held in the city to perpetuate the memory of the miracle, and the identical Hosts are exhibited in the church of St. Michel and St. Gudule for the veneration of the faithful. Cafmeyer's text contains a total of three woodcut and fifty engraved plates. Twenty-six of these portray religious subjects and scenes from the miracle and the commemorative celebrations within woodcut borders incorporating symbols and armorial bearings of catholic bishops and abbots of the Brabant. Most of the other plates depict triumphal arches, surmounted with similar pictorial representations. There is also a folding double-page plate of the altar in the church of St. Michel and St. Gudule, with border-scenes from the miracle. Whereas several Countries beyond the Seas have been for some time past, and still are grievously afflicted with the Plague; out of Our deep Sense of the Miseries Our People would suffer if Our Dominions should be visited with so dreadful a Calamity; and putting Our Trust in Almighty God (Who through his infinite Mercy has often preserved these Nations from imminent Destruction) that upon Our humiliation and Repentance, He will not cease to be Gracious to Us and Our Kingdoms, but will vouchsafe his special Blessing to Us and Our Subjects, by averting so severe a Judgement; We have Resolved, by the Advice of Our Privy-Council, That a General and Publick Fast be Observed, that both We and Our People may humble Our selves before Almighty God, and may, in a most Devout and Solemn Manner, send up Our Prayers and Supplications to the Divine Majesty, to implore his Protection, Blessing and Favour, to avert all those Judgements which Our manifold Sins have deserved, and to continue his Mercies, and to perpetuate the Enjoyment of the Protestant Religion among Us, and Safety and Prosperity to Our Kingdoms and Dominions: We have therefore thought fit, by the Advice of Our Privy-Council, to issue this Our Royal Proclamation, hereby Appointing and Commanding, that such General and Publick Fast be Observed throughout that Part of Our Kingdom of Great Britain called England, the Dominion of Wales, and the Town of Berwick upon Tweed, on Friday the Sixteenth Day of December next ensuing. And for the better and more orderly Solemnizing the same, We have given Directions to the Archbishops, and the Bishops of England, to compose a Form of Prayer suitable to this Occasion, to be used in all Churches and Chapels, and other Places of Publick Worship, and to take Care the same be timely dispersed throughout their respective Dioceses. And We do strictly Charge and command, that the said Publick Fast be religiously Observed by all Our Loving Subjects, as they tender the Favour of Almighty God, and upon Pain of Suffering such Punishments We may justly inflict upon all such as shall contemn or neglect the Performance of so Religious and Necessary a Duty. Given at Our Court at St. James's, the Fifteenth Day of November, 1720. In the seventh Year of Our Reign. God save the King.       printed for A. Churchill, J. Knapton, R. Knaplock, J. Walthoe, E. Horne, B. Tooke, D. Midwinter, B. Cowse, R. Robinson, and T. Ward, London 1720 - Best and most desirable edition of Stow's magisterial study—the "starting point of all inquiry into the subject of Elizabethean London." Complete in two folio volumes; each of the six 'books,' introduced by a drop-head title, with its own pagination: [4], xii, xlii, [2], 308, 208, 285, [1]; [2], 120, 459, [1], 93, [3], 143, [1], 26, [2]pp, with 70 plates, plans and maps (31 double-page or folding), including those of London, Westminster and Southwark. Title pages in red and black. Superbly bound in handsome contemporary paneled calf sewn on six raised bands, very skillfully rebacked with the original lettering pieces laid down. A crisp, clean, fresh copy, with only occasional minor soiling, the copper-engraved plates in deep, rich impressions. Provenance: On the verso of the title pages, the engraved armorial bookplate of Jacob Bouverie, 1st Viscount Folkestone (bapt. 14 October 1694 - 17 February 1761), English Politician and first elected president of the Royal Society for the encouragement of Arts, Manufactures & Commerce, whose members included Benjamin Franklin, Karl Marx, Adam Smith, William Hogarth and Charles Dickens. References: Maslen & Lancaster. Bowyer ledgers, 584. Lowndes V, 2526. Gibson's Library, p. 258. ESTC Citation No. T48975. First Issue with "1698" for 1598 on the title page (?) John Stow's Survey of London, first published in 1598, brims with amusing descriptions and anecdotes as well as highly detailed accounts of the buildings, social conditions and customs of the time, based on a wide range of classical and medieval historical literature, public and civic records, and Stow's own intimate knowledge of the city where he spent his life. "The reader of A Survey travels with Stow through each of the city's wards and the adjoining city of Westminster, learns about the wall, bridges, gates, and parish churches . . . [Stow] also records the negative aspects of urban growth, in the shape of unsightly sprawl, filth, the destruction of ancient monuments, and above all poverty. His book approaches the thoroughness of an encyclopaedia . . . It is noteworthy that while Camden's Britannia was written in Latin for the educated élite, Stow's Survey was composed in the language of his fellow countrymen." This edition, of 1720, greatly expanded with interpolated amendments by John Strype, is considered the best and most desirable. "Throughout his life at Low Leyton, Strype crossed the River Lea into London each week to meet and converse with his antiquarian friends and to call on his contacts in the book trade. . . . The Survey had been repeatedly revised and enlarged in order to keep up with the changing aspect of the post-fire city, now much expanded and altered in its religion and other ways. . . . Although Strype had arranged most of the work by 1707, and the engravings had been prepared, it was set aside after the publication of Edward Hatton's New View of London in 1708, which seemed to cover much the same ground and was considerably smaller and cheaper. . . . Finally, once the defects of Hatton's book were acknowledged another agreement in November 1716 led to the Survey's publication at the end of 1720. . . . The print run was probably more than 500 copies . . . To quote Merritt, ‘By this stage the Survey has a multiple personality, switching with little warning from nostalgic Elizabethan antiquary [Stow] . . . to diligent post-Restoration recorder of events [Strype] and back again’ (Merritt, 87)."
