        Petit Butor

      - A very detailed hand colored ornithological engraving by Johann Michael Seligmann (1720-1762) from his book "Sammlung Verschiedener Auslandischer und Selener Vogel" which was printed in Nuremberg in1749-76. These engravings were after George Edwards and Mark Catesby's earlier prints. Overall this print measures 15 ½” x 10”. Mark Catesby (1682-1749) was born and educated in England, and was originally sent to Carolina by the Royal Society in 1722 as a botanist. From there he traveled to Florida and the Bahamas, returning to England in 1726 with a vast store of information on the wildlife he had observed. By the spring of 1729, he had completed the first part of The Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands (1734-1746), but it was not until 1746 that the work was finally finished. It became the earliest colored book on American birds. George Edwards (1694-1773) was a contemporary of Mark Catesby. He was an ornithologist and bird illustrator who was heavily influenced by Catesby. Edwards is best known as the author of A Natural History, composed of two books: A Natural History of Uncommon Birds (1743-51) and Gleanings of Natural History (1758-1764). The plates that were contained within these works were valued for their landscape backgrounds, which were unusual at the time. To satisfy the tremendous demand for both these landmark works, Johann Michael Seligmann, a German publisher, issued a nine-volume compilation of the works of Mark Catesby and George Edwards. Seligmann’s Sammlung Verschiedener Auslandischer und Selener Vogel (1749-1776) contained plates based on the images of Catesby and Edwards, adding German and French titles. In bringing these masterworks to a larger audience, Seligmann has earned himself a rightful place in natural history circles, and his charming prints, reflecting well on their sources, stand on their own as another respected source for 18th century natural history documentation. Overall this print is in very good condition with some foxing and staining. Also a stain on bottom margin.

Veduta Degli Avanzi di Antiche Fabbriche alle falde. . .

Rome - John Wilton-Ely 322The watermark that is present is a fleur-de-lis but precisely which one is unknown due to the heavy ink. This print is from the series "Antichita di Albano e di Castel Gandolfo"Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. As architect, archaeologist, artist, designer, collector, and antiquities dealer, he produced a series of etchings and engravings depicting the glories of ancient Rome. These fine prints served as source material for other architects and designers. He was born in Venice on the 4th October 1720. The son of a stone-mason, he was educated as an architect under his maternal uncle Matto Lucchesi and under Carlo Zucchi. In 1740 Piranesi left Venice for Rome, there he studied etching under Giuseppe Vasi. He appears to have had little success in these early years in Rome and as his father was unable to continue his allowance returned to Venice in 1744. He was soon, however, encouraged to return to Rome by Giuseppe Wagner, a successful engraver and publisher of Venice. This time he achieved success, and a constant series of works, illustrating architecture and antiquities, issued from his studio until his death in 1778. His output in etched plates is enormous (about 1000 numbers in all). While he achieved a work of magnitude in pictorial records of Roman monuments of antiquity and of the Renaissance, and gave immense archæological, antiquarian, and topographical value to this work, the artistic quality always predominates. He was fond of peopling his ruins with Callot-like figures, and "like Callot makes great use of the swelling line" (Hind). He had two sons and a daughter, all of whom helped him in his work and after his death carried on his publications in Rome and Paris. They were Francesco (born 1748 or 1756; died 1810), Pietro (who lived till after 1807) and Laura (born 1750). His position in Rome and in Europe after 1760 was a prominent one. He was well-known figure to the wealthy English visitors in Rome and was elected a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in 1757. Most of his life was passed in Rome, etching, writing, publishing, and directing a workshop in which the restoration and sale of antiques played a considerable part.He was famous for his poetic views of Rome and also his fantastic imaginary interiors. His skills, allied to his deep knowledge of archaeology, provided the substance for his Vedute (Views), a series of 135 etchings of ancient and contemporary Rome, published from 1745 onwards, which established the popular mental image of the city. Vasi.et Ornamenti Antichi was a collection of 110 etchings documenting large sculptural vases, together with other antiquities excavated (and in some cases created) in Italy in the 18th century. The prints were initially separately issued and sold by Piranesi over a period of several years and subsequently collected in two folio volumes, each with its own title page, in 1778. They illustrate a wide range of genuine antiquities, as well as Piranesi's own collections, from utilitarian objects such as cinerary urns, lamps, and sarcophagi to monumental vases. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colleagues, visitors and influential people. He believed absolutely in the supremacy of Roman over Greek architecture, an argument he expounded most forcefully in his Della magnificenza ed architettura dei Romani (On the Magnificence of Roman Architecture, 1761). his romanticized views and imaginary interiors had a profound effect on stage designers, painters of capricci such as Hubert Robert, and even writers: William Beckford, the author of the Gothic novel and Vathek . In the 20th century his imaginary interiors have been admired by the Surrealists . Reference: John Wilton-Ely. Giovanni Battista Piranesi: The Complete

The Land Purchaser's Companion: and the Laws relating to Tenants and Tenures...To which are added, the Laws and Statutes relating to Tithes

Title within double-ruled border. xi, 283, [15] pp., one leaf of ads. Small 8vo, later sheep (neatly rebacked, some faint browning), red morocco lettering piece on spine. "In the Savoy" [London]: printed by Eliz. Nutt and R. Gosling, 1720. First edition and very scarce on the market. Jacob (1686-1744), legal and literary author (including much pornography), is best known for The Country Gentleman's Vade Mecum (1717). After serving an apprenticeship to the law, he became Secretary to the Hon. W. Blathwayt, a celebrated courtier in the reign of William and Mary. Jacob, a land-owner with a keen interest in farming, was prompted to write the present work "as a companion to the purchaser...to render every thing plain and intelligible, that persons of all capacities may be enabled to judge when they are secure, and faithfully dealt with by the practisers of the law, in everything that shall commonly occur" (pp. viii-ix). He cautions, topically, "on the late flourishing business in Exchange Alley, occasion'd by the great rise of the South-Sea Stock, such extraordinary fortunes have been acquir'd by merchants and others, that the immediate value of lands...is considerably advanc'd, even to thirty five and forty years purchase, near the city of London; but this cannot be expected to be a standard rule for the future, or to times in general" (p. xi). Jacob also experimented with satire in The Rape of the Smock, published in 1717, a scatological parody of Alexander Pope's The Rape of the Lock. Pope later retaliated in the 1728 edition of The Dunciad (see ODNB). Early signature of "RA Ward" on title. .

. Halae, Literis Et Impensis Orphanotrophei, 1720, 4°, (8), 224 (1-216, 216-223) pp., feiner Halbpergamentband.. First Edition! - "The existence of this tension between chemical and physical theories, and between practice and theory, is the reason why the controversy that arose between Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) and Georg Ernst Stahl (1660-1734) is so interesting. The crucial questions of the status and role of theories were at stake there, as well as that of the relations that chemistry should or should not keep with other disciplines, and notably with mechanics and medicine. In 1709, Leibniz had read Stahl's major medical work, published the year before, the True Medical Theory. He showed himself interested in the insights of Stahl, who was a famous chemist and an equally famous professor of medicine at the University of Halle, but at the same time disagreed with numerous theoretical statements contained in Stahl's work. In order to explain his disagreements, he sent a fifteen-page text to Stahl. Stahl answered with a hundred-page text, to which Leibniz replied with approximately thirteen pages. Stahl composed a last answer that was, however, never sent to Leibniz. In 1720, four years after Leibniz's death, Stahl published the whole controversy under the title Negotium otiosum (Idle occupation)."         Elevazione de' Teatri di Balbo, e di Marcello con gli Altri edifizi ch'eran loro vicini.

Rome - John Wilton-Ely 610There is a watermark present in the form of a fleur-de-lis but presicely which one is unknown due to the heavy ink. This print is from the series "Il Campo Marzio dell' Antica Roma"The Campo Marzio occupies a special place in Piranesi's artistic development, in terms of both his ideas and his imaginative use of visual techniques in support of them. Like the other treaties of the 1760s, this work is a sophisticated blend of archaeology and polemic in which historical evidence is employed to defend the creative genius of Rome. There are also sugns of the artist's growing concern with the problem of modern design, and the publication is, significantly dedicated to the British architect Robert Adam, who shared Piranesi's belief in the imaginative use of antiquity." (John Wilton Ely II pg 613)Giovanni Battista Piranesi was one of the leading figures in the development of the neoclassical style in the late 18th Century. The plates in Vasi often included text by Piranesi with information about where the objects were discovered and their contemporary location, and the prints bore dedications to his patrons, colle
