Enstaka frontespiser skurna i yttermarginal. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

A Second Tale of a Tub: or, The History of Robert Powel the Puppet-Show-Man

London: Printed for J. Roberts near the Oxford Arms in Warwick-Lane,, 1715. First Edition. 8vo: [2],219,[5]pp, with frontispiece and imprimatur leaf. Variant with price 3s/6d on title page. Period calf ruled in blind, rebacked to style, red morocco lettering piece gilt, end papers renewed. From the library of bibliophile Hugh Selbourne, M.D. (1906-1973), with his discreet ownership stamp on two pages. (In an appreciation of Shelbourne's diaries, Hilary Mantle noted in The Guardian: "His passion is for antiquarian books, and he owns them by the yard; we are not talking about first editions of Dickens, but first editions of Erasmus, 'printed Basle, 1517'. His regular beat takes him to his private consulting rooms at St John Street in the centre of Manchester, then to Shaw's, the book dealer . . .".) A handsome copy, clean and sound, with several abrasions to boards, marginal toning to some leaves, occasional spots and soiling, inoffensive ink blot to p. 195 obscuring four or five letters but not affecting sense. ESTC Citation N22063. McBurney 79. Lowndes 325 (calling it a satire on Sir Robert Walpole, ascribed to Thomas Duffet). Wicked satire on statesman Robert Harley, Earl of Oxford (political power-broker and patron of Jonathan Swift, Alexander Pope, and Daniel Defoe), taking its title from Swift's celebrated Tale of a Tub (but not recorded by Teerink-Scouten in the list of spurious sequels to Swift's work). Probably written with the collaboration of George Duckett, it casts an account of Harley's life as an allegory of a Machiavellian scoundrel who betrays family and friends in his rise to power and practice of ruthless state craft. The vehicle for this allegory is Martin Powell (fl. 1709-29), the physically deformed showman who ran a celebrated puppet-show in Covent Garden (as shown in the frontispiece). The Tale portrays Harley as a puppet-master manipulating Swift and other hack writers in the service of the Tory faction. Though not a novel, per se, Second Tale of a Tub is seen by some as an important link between Swift's antecedent and Laurence Sterne's Tristram Shandy (Eugene Korkowskia, Studies in the Novel, Vol. 6, No. 4, pp. 470-474). N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

London, Paris, Charles-Antoine Jombert, 1765. 12mo (18 x 11 cm). With floor plans, interior elevations, sections and a plan of the ceiling decoration of a theatre on 6 folding engraved plates, and decorations built up from rococo fleurons. Late 19th-century red half cloth.

Cioranesco 19932; not in BAL; Cohen-De Ricci. First edition of a charming treatise with beautiful engraved plates with plans, cross-sections, an elevation of the stage and a plan of the decorated ceiling for a proposed design for a new comedy theatre to be built in Paris, by the famous graphic artist, draughtsman and engraver Charles Nicholas Cochin the younger (1715-1790). Like his father, the son worked mainly as a book illustrator, producing print series for Lafontaine's tales and the works of Rousseau, Boccaccio, Tasso, etc. He also collaborated with the architect Bellicard to produce a work on Roman antiquities. His designs for the festivals and splendid ceremonies at the court of Louis XV became especially famous. All six plates are signed by the engraver Maroye, who collaborated with Cochin on several projects. The book was printed in Paris. The title-page is a cancel and the watermarks confirm that the cancel title-page was printed with the second quire as the last leaf B12, so the book is not a reissue and the title-page may therefore have been cancelled to correct an error discovered during the printing.Lacking the initial blank leaf, A1. With the engraved bookplate (signed "Stern graveur") of Ludovic Halévy (1834 -1908), literary author and poet of Offenbach librettos. Very good copy, with only occasional very minor foxing, and nearly untrimmed (retaining some deckles and point holes).

[Official contemporary copies of incoming diplomatic correspondence to the Dutch government in The Hague from Dutch ambassadors, envoys, diplomatic residents and others in Vienna, Graz, Schaffhausen, Turin, Madrid, Paris, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Moscow, Cologne, Frankfurt, Dresden, Regensburg, Warsaw, Grodno, Maastricht, The Hague, Brussels and Ostend].[The Hague], letters dated 26 January-17 December 1715 and 7 November 1725-22 November 1729. Folio (32.5 x 20.5 cm). 96 letters clearly written in dark brown ink on paper, 84 in Dutch and 12 in French, mostly in a Latin hand (the Dutch ones from 1715 in a semi-gothic hand). Loose leaves in a modern portfolio.

A set of 96 letters from 20 Dutch diplomats throughout Europe, 52 in the year 1715 and 44 in the years 1725 to 1729, in copies made by the Dutch government as the letters came in. They give a remarkably detailed view of day to day activities in international diplomacy and local current events, forming a valuable primary source for any study of the period. A 1715 report from Turin gives information on troops in Malta, an 1728 report from Moscow ranges from the future Empress of Russia's pilgrimage on foot to a General setting off for Siberia to oversee the copper and iron mines, a 1729 report from Warsaw notes that they are warily keeping an eye on the Ottoman Porte in Constantinople. More than half the letters date from the year 1715, giving an extraordinary view of Europe in the aftermath of the War of the Spanish Succession, in the year of Louis XIV's death and during the Ottoman-Venetian War.Formerly folded. Two leaves show a small hole burned in the foot margin, a half dozen have an even smaller burn on the edge of the paper, and a few show very minor foxing, but still in very good condition. A wealth of material for political-historical, biographical and cultural-historical studies.

The first edition of 1703 is quite rare, but this 1715 edition may be even rarer. It is possible that this actually is a 1703 edition "updated" by the (new) publisher with only a new title page, as was often done in the 18th century. A slightly different paper for the title page supports this theory. A few marginal paper restorations. Original spine preserved, some expert repairs to boards. The plates on folding leaves according to the publisher's instructions on page 86. Contains an unsigned gathering between pp. 64 and 67 that is often missing. ADDED in the same volume is J. Schreber, Plantarum verticillatarum unilabiatarum genera et species. Lipsiae, S. Crusius, 1774. 5 ll., LXXV pp., and one large folded engraving. Identical to the 1773 edition. A very good copy. Both publications are rare. For the latter see Pritzel, 8399, 8400; Stafleu and Cowan, 11.131A, for the Commelin see Nissen BBI, 388; Pritzel, 1837; Stafleu and Cowan, 1185.

      - Amsterdam, J. Desbordes, 1715. Two parts in two. 8vo (16.1 x 10.2 cm). 1,087 [(xxviii), 512; (xii), 492, (34)] pp., two engraved frontispieces, three engraved plates (one larger, folded), one large folded map. Uniform vellum with script title on the spines.l Very rare French translation of a work first published in Spanish in 1609-1616, this being the second Amsterdam edition. Widely regarded as the most accurate description of the Inca kingdom. With a fine large map of northwestern South America, including Peru and most of Colombia, and eastern Brazil. Garcilaso "El Inca" de la Vega (1539-1616), born in Cuzco, was the first scholar of mixed European and Inca descent. Old private book owner's stamp on the front flyleaf rectos, some text sections rather toned, otherwise a nice clean set. We could only trace two copies in the auction records, one in 1914 and one in 1972, so this edition is very rare indeed. Brunet II, 1483; Sabin, 98752.

Joints and extremities skilfully refurbished, contents variably browned, occasional spotting, small hole to title not affecting text, First gathering dampstained. A good copy. First and only edition. "The book is a translation of a work in Spanish published in 1610 by Pedro Teixeira (erroneously identified by Stevens as Antony), a Portuguese traveler and writer about whom little is known. Some time after 1586 Teixeira traveled to Portuguese Goa in present-day India. From there he went to Persia, where he became proficient in Persian and acquired books and manuscripts on the history of the country. Teixeira's book consisted of a summary and translation of the Tarikh-i rawzat al-safa ("History of the kings of Persia") by Mir Khvand, Muhammad ibn Khavandshah (1433–98), a summarized translation of a Persian chronicle of the kings of H[o]rmuz, and an account of his own voyage from India to Italy in 1600–01. Stevens's work contained numerous errors and inaccuracies, but it played an important part in making Persia better known to 18th-century European and especially British readers" (Library of Congress, online.) This copy comes from from the library of British Arabist and colonial agent Col. S. B. Miles (1838–1914), with his ownership inscription to the initial blank, a printed bookplate to front pastedown noting his widow's bequest of the collection to Bath Public Library in 1920, and associated manuscript shelf-marks and blind-stamps as usual: an excellent association.

Elevation of the Rt Hon the Earl of Chesterfield's House

A wonderfully detailed architectural engraving by Colin Campbell  from his breathtaking book Vitruvius Britannicus, or the British Architect, Containing the Plans, Elevations, and Sections of the Regular  Buildings Both Publick and Private in Great Britain... , which was published in London in 1715-1767. Overall this print measures 21.5"x18", and is in good condition with some foxing/staining and creasing.Colin Campbell was a Scottish-born architect who published the single most influential work of architecture published in the Georgian era. As the title suggests, the work focuses upon the writings of the Roman architectural author, Vitruvius, and testifies to Campbell's outright rejection of the French influence upon British architecture, so prevalent during the reign of the late Stuart monarchs.  The book champions the classical purity of line which pervaded the work of the seventeenth-century English court architect, Inigo Jones and the sixteenth-century Italian architect, Andrea Palladio, both considered exemplars of the style by Campbell. However, the book also represents the rise of the nobility and professional designer as arbiters of fashion, a facet of British culture previously dominated by royalty.  The British countryside, as we know it today, was the creation of the Georgian period, and the result of the  pursuit of profit and pleasure.  The nobility now enjoyed new found wealth largely due to the Seven Years’ War when the Crown had given land to loyal supporters.  This land was mainly concentrated in large estates and its owners either sat in the House of Commons or knew people who did.  Thus, the land enclosure acts, which allowed for the most modern methods of farming, were easily passed and as a result agriculture became a profitable enterprise.  For the first time the elite could afford to build grand homes for themselves and to receive members of the royal family.  While ‘Capability’ Brown supplied the design for magnificently landscaped gardens, Campbell’s Vitruvius Britannicus provided a marvelous template for the design of the house. The first part of this ambitious work was completed in 1725.  The latter parts were completed after Campbell's death by John Woolfe and James Gandon, noted architects who felt the importance of continuing Campbell's project."Arader Galleries intends to have the lowest prices on ABE, Alibris, Biblio, AE, and Artnet while maintaining the highest levels of quality in the business for every offering.
