Litterae Patentes Imperatoris Sinarum Kang-Hi. Sinice et Latine. Cum interpretatione R.P. Ignatii Koegleri, S.J.…Ex Archetypo Sinensi edidit additis notitiis Sinicis Christophorus Theophilus de Murr

Three text leaves with Chinese characters, final conjugate leaf a full-page woodcut with about 65 Chinese characters, & a large folding engraved plate printing in Chinese characters the Kangxi Emperor's edict of 1716. 58, [1] pp. Large 4to, orig. decorative wrappers, uncut. Nuremberg & Altdorf: Monath & Kussler, 1802. First and only edition of an extremely uncommon book. Murr (1733-1811), a resident of Nuremberg, was a scholar with polymathic interests. He edited several intellectual journals, published on libraries and art museums, etc. This work is, in large part, concerned with the Chinese Rites Controversy and the famous "Red Decree." The Jesuit missionaries who came to China in the late 16th century tried to accommodate their message as much as possible to the customs of the literati classes which they had identified as the most susceptible for conversion. This included the toleration of certain practices, such as ritual sacrifices to ancestors, which might be construed as incompatible with Catholic teaching. The urbane manners, linguistic skills and scientific accomplishments of the Jesuits won them the confidence and admiration of the highest circles of society, including the Emperor himself, but also the enmity and jealousy of rival Catholic orders, giving rise to the so-called "Rites Controversy." In 1704 Pope Clement XI forbade a number of practices permitted by the Jesuits, including "ancestor worship" and sent a Papal Legate to explain the matter to the Kangxi Emperor in person. The Emperor was confused and annoyed by what he perceived as attempts to interfere with the internal affairs of China. In 1706 he sent Fathers Barros and Beauvollier, Jesuits resident at his court, back to Europe in order to obtain clarification. They perished at sea. Two years later he sent two more Jesuits, Fathers Provana and Arxo on a similar mission. They both died before they could return to China. In 1716, since nothing more had been heard of his envoys, the Emperor decided to send an open letter, the so-called "Red Decree," to be given to foreign merchants returning to Europe, enquiring about their fate. In the letter, the Emperor stated that he will not give credence to any documents regarding the Rites Controversy until his envoys return. The letter was composed by the Emperor himself and was in Manchu (the official dynastic language), Chinese and Latin. The style of the Chinese text is colloquial, unusual in an official document, perhaps so it would be more intelligible to foreigners. Murr found the papers of Ignaz Kögler (1680-1746), the German Jesuit who had worked in the Imperial Observatory in Beijing from 1717, in the Jesuit college of Bamberg and decided to publish his Latin translation of the "Red Decree" together with other material relating to the Jesuits in China. The "Red Decree" is reproduced in Chinese on the large folding engraved plate ("Indicium Mandarinorum de quatuor Missionariis e Soc. Jesu. Iussu Imperatoris Kanz-Hi, 31 Oct. 1716"). For every character he gives a translation and explanation based on the texts left by Kögler (pp. 11-21). There follows the Latin text of the edict (pp. 21-22) with explanations, followed in turn by various miscellanea about the state of affairs in the Jesuit mission 1766-1800 (pp. 26-28) and about Kögler and his astronomical observations and publications (pp. 28-32). There follows eight pages which contain a list of Jesuit publications of a mathematical, astronomical, scientific, and philosophical nature printed in China. Pages 41-55 contain "Notitiae Sinicae." On pp. 56-58 there is a transcription of the list of Chinese quadrupeds arranged according to the Linnaean method with a letter from Linnaeus to Murr dated 22 March 1776. The list in Chinese characters numbered 1 to 42 is found on p. 59. Fine fresh copy. ❧ Cordier, Sinica, col. 638.

Lalande, 365. Houzeau et Lancaster, 11591. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

The State of Russia Under the Present Czar.

London: Benjamin Tooke, 1716. sep 22 2017. (5), 280 pp. b/w folding map. Hardly seems a maritime work but, according to the DNB, "Perry arrived in Russia in the early summer of 1698. He was first employed to report on the possibility of establishing a canal between the rivers Volga and Don... the work was begun in 1700... early in 1702 [he was] ordered to Voronej, on the right bank of the river of that name, to establish a dock. This was completed in 1703, after which Perry was employed in making the Voronej river navigable for ships of war from the city of Voronej to the Don. To 1710 Perry made surveys and engineering work about the river Don." According to this account, the Czar stiffed him, paying him only one year's salary for fourteen years of work. Perry takes his revenge in the introduction to this account. Cox, I, p. 192. The large folding map by Herman Moll is in excellent condition, as is the rest of the book. Bound in old mottled calf, rebacked to match, with spine label.

Phoronomia, sive de viribus et motibus corporum solidorum et fluidorum libri duo.

Amsterdam: Apud Rod. & Gerh. Wetstenios, 1716. First edition of the first textbook on theoretical mechanics based on the Leibnizian calculus, important for containing the first published discussion of the kinetic theory of gases. "This textbook concerned advanced mechanics in the modern sense and was considered an important work, very favorably reviewed by Leibniz himself in the Acta Eruditorum" (Fellmann in DSB). "The beginning of the kinetic theory of gases is usually assigned to the year 1738, when Daniel Bernoulli's 'Hydrodynamica' appeared at Strasbourg. The famous tenth section of this book pursued some of the consequences of the assumption that 'elastic fluids' consist of innumerable tiny particles in rapid motion. [However an] earlier attempt dates from 1716, and is to be found in the 'Phoronomia' of Bernoulli's compatriot Jacob Hermann ... For us the importance of Hermann's chapter XXIV is that it is, as far as I know, the first attempt to deal mathematically with the relations between heat and motion. The intuition that the speed of the particles must be squared is especially noteworthy, but perhaps not more so than the assumption that their speeds will not all be the same, so that an average must be taken" (Knowles Middleton). "In 1716, the Swiss mathematician Jakob Hermann (1678-1733) published his book on theoretical mechanics, Phoronomia, in which he proposed the first definite measure of the heat of molecular motion. In Proposition LXXXV he wrote: Calor, caeteris paribus, est in composite ratione ex densitate corporis calidi, & duplicata ratione agitationis particularum ejusdem (Heat, in bodies of similar composition, is in the composed ratio of the density of the hot body and the square of the agitation of its particles), in other words, for the first time it was being suggested that the pressure is proportional to the density and the mean square velocity of the molecules" (Wisniak). Jakob Hermann (1678-1733) received his initial training from Jacob Bernoulli, and graduated with a degree in 1695. He became a member of the Berlin Academy in 1701. He was appointed to a chair in mathematics in Padua in 1707 (on the recommendation of Leibniz), but moved to Frankfurt an der Oder in 1713, and thence to St. Petersburg in 1724. Finally, he returned to Basel in 1731 to take up a chair in ethics and natural law. "While in Padua, Hermann lectured on the standard topics of the day, namely classical geometry, mechanics, optics, hydraulics, and gnomonics. However, his work with other scientists was almost entirely devoted to understanding, developing and applying methods in the infinitesimal calculus. It was while he was in Padua that Hermann did most of the work on his most famous book, the Phoronomia, which is a text on mechanics. Although he began writing the book in 1709, it was not published until 1716, three years after he left Italy ... "Hermann held his post in Padua until his contract expired on 28 April 1713. While in Padua he had asked Leibniz's advice about moving to a university in another country and Leibniz had suggested a position in Frankfurt-an-der-Oder, but advised Hermann to see out the six year contract he had signed with Padua. Although he had a very successful career in Italy, Hermann seems to have found the fact that he was a Protestant in a Roman Catholic country somewhat difficult and, of course, Germany presented a religious environment much more to his liking. After leaving Padua in April, he went to Vicenza where he lived at the home of Giovanni Checozzi (1691-1756) and Sebastiano Checozzi (1693-1719) until June, after which he went first to Basel and subsequently to Frankfurt-an-der-Oder to take up his new appointment. He spent eleven years in Frankfurt-an-der-Oder, again a position which, as we have explained, was largely due to Leibniz's recommendation. But in 1724 Peter the Great called him to Russia to found, together with a number of others, the St. Petersburg Scientific Academy. He went to Russia in 1725, meeting Christian Goldbach in Königsberg while on the journey, and held a chair of higher mathematics in the St. Petersburg Academy until 1731 ... "In 1726, the St. Petersburg Academy began to publish a journal under the title Commentarii Academiae Petropolitanae. The journal was launched with an article by Hermann taking pride of place. Leonhard Euler arrived at the Academy in 1727. This was a difficult time since, following the death of Catherine, Peter II had become tsar at the age of twelve. There was political turmoil which had a serious affect on the work of the Academy which was close to collapse. Hermann worked at the Academy through these difficult years until, with the death of Peter II in 1730, the political situation stabilised. He had wanted to return to Basel, however, and had been appointed to the chair of ethic and natural law there in 1727. He had a substitute carry out the duties involved until his contract in St Petersburg came to an end in 1731 at which time he returned to Basel to take up the chair he had formally held for four years. He had hoped that a chair of mathematics would become vacant in Basel before his contract at the St. Petersburg Academy came to an end but this did not happen. "Hermann worked in mechanics and studied the 'inverse problem' where one has to determine the orbit from a knowledge of the law of force. He proposed the term 'phoronomia' in 1716 for the topic which was sometimes called 'rational mechanics' and is now called 'theoretical mechanics'. This appears in the title of his important book Phoronomia, sive de viribus et motibus corporum solidorum et fluidorum libri duo (1716) ... "An example of Hermann's approach is illustrated by looking at how he proved Kepler's area law. This had been proved by Newton in the Principia by using an intuitive limiting geometrical process. Hermann, however, gave a proof in the Phoronomia in terms of differentials. Although his notation was rather different from modern notation, and not particularly easy to understand, Hermann reworked the same ideas into a notation which is essentially that used today and sent his new version of the proof to John Keill who published it in Journal litéraire in 1717" (MacTutor). "The complexity of the process of mathematization of dynamics is particularly evident in transitional figures, such as Jakob Hermann (1678-1733). He belonged to the Basel school headed by the Bernoullis and, sharing their methodology, made important contributions to the analytical treatment of dynamics. However, he also leaned towards Newton and, on many occasions, preferred to deal with dynamical problems in terms of geometry. His methodology is thus quite eclectic ... Hermann's main work is Phoronomia, which, written during his Italian period, was published in Amsterdam in 1716. This work is devoted to the dynamics of solid and fluid bodies and covers many problems dealt with by Newton in the first two books of the Principia. In the preface, Hermann declares his intention of adhering to geometrical methods, since these seem to him more suitable for beginners [pp. vii-viii]. However, his knowledge of calculus is evident in the way in which he deals with infinitesimals. Hermann's Phoronomia is indeed representative of the process of transition that transformed dynamics in the first decades of the 18th century" (Guicciardini). Not in Norman, Roberts & Trent or Tomash. N Guicciardini. 'An episode in the history of dynamics. Jakob Hermann's proof (1716-1717) of Proposition 1, Book 1, of Newton's Principia,' Historia Mathematica 23 (1996), pp. 167-181. W. E. Relaçam dos progressos das armas portuguezas no Estado da India, no anno de 1713. Sendo Vice-Rey, e Capitam General do mesmo Estado Vasco Fernandes Cesar de Menezes. Parte I.

Lisbon, Na Officina de Pascoal da Sylva, 1716. - Parts I-III only (of 4). 4°, disbound. Woodcut monogram on title page. Woodcut headpieces, tailpiece, and initials. Good to very good condition. 22 pp., (1 l.). *** Second edition of this first part, reprinted (according to Innocêncio) without acknowledgment from Relação dos successos e gloriosas acções militares obradas no Estado da India, ordenadas e dirigidas pelo Vice-rei e Capitão general d'aquelle Estado Vasco Fernandes Cesar de Menezes, Lisbon, 1715, by Antonio Rodrigues da Costa. Freire de Monterroyo Mascarenhas anonymously published 3 sequels to it. Parts 2 and 3 are included with in this set; the fourth, Lisbon: Paschoal da Silva, 1716, is not present. A promised fifth part never appeared.Part 1 includes a lengthy, detailed account of the viceroy's reponse to a rebellion by the rajah of Canará, south of Goa. A fleet under José Pereyra de Brito sailed to Cumutá (Canará's best port) and several other fortresses and harbors, leaving a swath of destruction behind. Only 12 Portuguese died in battle, but Pereyra de Brito fell ill and died back in Goa. Included here is a poem in his memory, as well as 3 poems to the viceroy (one of them an anacrostic). Also in this part is an account of the expedition against the fleet of Angria, a powerful pirate operating out of Culabo (near Chaul, pp. 19-20). Angrià was defeated with heavy losses and the Portuguese blockaded his ships into the harbor at Culabo for at least 3 months. The Angria dynasty, established in the 1690s by Kanhoji Angre (d. 1729), is variously regarded as a family of pirates who grew wealthy by plundering British, Dutch, and Portuguese merchant ships, or as naval commanders of the Maratha Confederacy who were precursors of India?s effort to drive out the British. They usually plied their trade off the west coast of India. (One of the Angria family makes a guest appearance on the Brethren Court in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World?s End.)Also in this part, in lesser detail, are accounts of the Portuguese expeditions against the Sunda (near Goa) and an offensive against Arab ships in the neighborhood of Goa (pp. 20-22).Vasco Fernandes César de Meneses, 1º Conde de Sabugosa, was viceroy of India from 1712 to 1717, when he returned to Portugal. Portuguese India was in decline when he arrived. His rapid counterattack to the rebellions by the rajahs of Canará and Sunda led to the quick surrender of both rajahs. He also sent a fleet of 15 ships to attack the Indian pirate Angriá, defeating him at the port of Culabo. The Grand Moghul ceded to Portugal the territory of Pondá. In 1720 he was named viceroy of Brazil, holding the position for 15 years and establishing the Academia dos Esquecidos, among whose members was ths historian Sebastião da Rocha Pita. The author (1670-1760?), a native of Lisbon, began his studies in Portugal and extended them for 10 years, beginning in 1693, by traveling throughout Europe to study its politics and languages. Back in Portugal, he served from 1704 to 1710 as a cavalry captain in the War of the Spanish Succession. When the war ended he began to publish the Gazeta de Lisboa, of which he remained editor for more than 40 years. He also published numerous pamphlets such as this one, on current events.*** Innocêncio IV, 345; on the first edition of the first part see I, 258. JCB, Portuguese and Brazilian Books 716/2.

Per Jacopo Guiducci e Santi Franchi 1716 - FIRST ITALIAN EDITION, with 7 folding engraved plates and 1 smaller on different paper (not numbered), numerous bold woodcut decorations, plates a bit browned, pp. [xvi], 162, [2], large 8vo, contemporary green vellum, spine gilt in compartments, russet morocco lettering piece, shelf number on foot of spine, overlapping fore-edges, front joint cracking, good. The first translation of Hauksbee's 1709 'Physico-Mechanical Experiments' (which was 'Sold only at the Author's House'), and in fact the second edition of the text: Henry Guerlac in DSB points out that this edition was the one chiefly read in France, and the one used by the pioneer electrician C.F. de Cisternay Duffay. A French translation did not appear until 1754. In the main article Guerlac describes Hauksbee's experiments, and the 'unique collaboration between the venerable dean of English science [i.e. Newton] and the vigorous, gifted experimenter. From Newton, Hauksbee came to understand the theoretical import of some of his discoveries; and for his part the older man relied on Hauksbee's practiced hands to test some of his conjectures. What particularly interested Newton we learn from the changes he made during this period in new editions of his principal works, the Opticks and the Principia.' 'Hauksbee's important experiments on electroluminescence, static electricity, and capillarity, described in the present wok, mark the beginning of sustained experimentation in the field of electricity' (Norman 1020). The anonymous Proemio (by the translator) praises Boyle and Newton, and explains that the motive of the translation is the inspiration of further researches. A scarce book, and an attractive copy. (Mottelay, pp. 149--51; Taylor 590; Wheeler Gift 232, all referring to the English edition)
