Large folio (43 x 29 cm). With engraved author's portrait and 136 engraved plates (some folding). Contemporary vellum. [20], 452, [2]; [12], XVI, 34, [9], [1 blank] pp. A very thoroughly illustrated, systematic account of human anatomy, with 136 large engraved plates, some with a single large figure and some with many small ones. Some of the figures show microscopic views of details. VOET, Johannes.
Commentarius ad Pandectas.Den Haag, Abraham de Hondt, 1716. 2 volumes. Folio. Contemporary calf, richly gold-tooled spines. [20], 974, [61], [1 blank]; 1180, [68] pp. Third edition of an exhaustive commentary on Justinian's Digest, the principal work of the Dutch professor of law Johannes Voet (1647-1713). This influential work was first published 1698-1704 and translated into Italian, Dutch and English. The second volume pays special attention to subjects relevant to the Netherlands, such as maritime law. "Voet ... differs from most of the other Dutch commentators on the Pandecta in his thorough an masterly exposition of the Roman-Dutch law as it obtained in his day. He was not satisfied with a mere academic treatise on the civil law, but he showed how that law should be applied to the affairs of everyday life, and how it was actually practiced in the courts of Holland and the adjoining provinces. Into his treatise on the Roman law he wove the legislation of the United Provinces which had altered or modified the civil law, the decisions of the courts which had interpreted the law, and the disputes on controverted points of law which had been ventilated in the courts or in the works of Dutch and other jurists. Voet's Commentary on the Pandects is therefore just as much a treatise on the law of Holland as the Introduction of Grotius or the Roman-Dutch Law of Van Leeuwen" (Wessels).Internally in very good condition, with only some occasional minor spots. Bindings a bit rubbed, but otherwise good. Dekkers, Bibliotheca Belgica juridica, p. 181, no. 9; STCN (7 copies); cf. Wesse … [Click Below for Full Description]

With 4 manuscript leaves of tables added by a contemporary owner. Contemporary vellum. [8], 447, [1 blank] pp. Practical guide to the calculation of the value of gold and silver of any purity, intended for merchants, mint masters and others who deal with precious metals. The author notes that there is "now" a great deal of low grade gold and silver on the market (below 20 carat and 10 penningen respectively, i.e. below 83 1/3 %), and that previously published guides did not cover these in a convenient manner. He therefore first explains how these metals are weighed in the Netherlands, presenting the units of weight and their relations, and gives instructions for using the tables, with examples. Once one has weighed the gold or silver and assayed it to give the purity in carats/mark or penningen/mark respectively, the tables on pp. 1-223 and 225-395 tell the weight of fine metal in a given weight of impure metal. Once one knows the weight of fine gold or silver, one can look up its value in guilders in the tables on pp. 224 a … [Click Below for Full Description]

Printed by John Baskett, Printer to [the] Kings most Excellent Majesty for Great-Britain and for [the] University, Oxford, 1716. Two volumes. Royal folios (measuring 55cm. in height, or 14.5" x 21.5"). The rarer of two known states (the other bearing a 1717 imprint): Volume 1 (Old Testament and Apocrypha) issued with the illustrated engraved title page engraved by John Sturt and dated 1716; and Volume 2 (New Testament) issued with an engraving of the Annunciation on the letterpress title page and dated 1716. A rare copy of the magnificent 'Vinegar Bible', in a presentation binding of black levant leather with the Royal Cypher of King George III (surmounted by a crown) stamped in gold in five compartments on the spines of each volume, and the Royal Arms (with "G.R. III" above the crown) embossed at the center of all four covers. Both volumes have early marbled endpapers and wove paper fly leaves, royal blue silk ribbons, all edges gilt. According to an early bookseller's description (tipped onto the front fly leaf): "this copy possesses even an additional interest beyond being the property of, and most likely often read by the Monarch, who expressed a hope 'That the time would come when every poor child in his dominions would be able to read the Bible.'" Whether such speculation is true might be subject to some skepticism, but we can only say that this is a presentation binding. Baskett's Bible is a landmark in English graphic art, celebrated both for the beauty of its typographical design and many Baroque engravings, and also for its many typographical errors, including the … [Click Below for Full Description]

MASCLEF, François
Parisiis: J. Collombat, 1716. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. François Masclef was a 17th-century French Hebrew priest who developed notable methods for teaching Hebrew grammar. He highly valued the use of the Masoretic text - the traditional Hebrew of the Jewish Bible. In his book 1716 'Grammatica Hebraica', Masclef proposed variations in Hebrew pronunciations, much of which was thought to be arbitrary and a unnecessary break in Jewish tradition. This book received tremendous criticism, so much so, that the controversy surrounding it made it popular in and out of Jewish circles until the end of the 18th-century. This rare first edition was published in Paris by Collombat and utilizes Latin and Hebrew texts throughout. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]
