DAMPIER GUILLAUME
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Kettilby, Mary]; by Several Hands (anon.)
London: For Richard Wilkin, 1714. Octavo (19 x 12.5 cm.), [16], 218, [13] pages. FIRST EDITION. "Mary Kettilby's collection of cookery recipes and medicinal and home remedies, from a tasty "green-pease soop, without meat" to gooseberry wine. Households that could not afford French cooks or French cooking came to form a growing audience for books by women that contained unpretentious recipes cut to suit a less costly cloth, for pickling and collaring rather than ragouts. Where Hannah Woolley had led, plenty of female cooks with their eye on the profitable middle market followed, with books like Mary Kettilby's collection of recipes (1714) and Eliza Smith's Compleat Housewife (1734)" Colquhoun, Taste: The Story of Britain through its Cookery (2015)). Kettilby's book purported to be a collective effort: the preface stating that 'a Number of very Curious and Delicate House-wives Clubb'd to furnish out this Collection'. Maclean however (pages 79-82) doubts this, and notes that evidence from later editions indicate Kettilby to be the main author. Apart from the Preface, there is no introduction of any sort: the recipes follow immediately after the chapter headings. The book is clearly divided into chapters of recipes for food and for remedies, but within the chapters there is no definite structure. For example, the first chapter begins with six recipes for soups, followed by recipes for collared beef, 'French-Cutlets', collared mutton, stewed pigeons, broiled pigeons, dressed turbot, and then patties 'for a Dish of Fish'. The recipes are given either as goals, as 'To make Hogs-P … [Click Below for Full Description]

GRECO, Giocchino.
Le jeu des eschets. Traduit de l'Italien.Paris, Denis Mouchet, 1714. 12mo. With a woodcut decoration on title-page and a woodcut headpiece in text. Contemporary mottled calf, richly gold-tooled spine. [22], 343, [1 blank] pp. Late edition of the French translation of one of the most famous early chess books, originally written in Italian and first presented in manuscript by the author, the famous Calabrian chess player Giocchino Greco (ca. 1600-1635) to the King of Naples in 1619. At first only manuscript transcriptions were made. The first French edition appeared in 1669, after the first English edition of 1656. After a short explanation of the general principles of the game of chess, it teaches chess players by presenting chess games and problems only, often with a possible defense added as well. The book is divided into two parts, the first with 39 games, extensively recorded, and the second part with 55 more advanced chess problems. With a partly removed owner's inscription on the title-page, repeated and partly removed at the first page of the main text.

Slightly browned, but otherwise in very good condition. Binding slightly rubbed and with slightly soiled paste-downs, otherwise very good. Bibl. Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana 404; Cat. Schaakboekerij Niemeijer 989; Coll. Rimington-Wilson 566.

DAMPIER GUILLAUME
[Click Below for Full Description]

See Below. 1714, Johann Hübner, Hamburg Germany. First Edition, First Printing. The first ever printing of this seminal classic. The first time that Bible stories were printed specifically for children. Thus it was somewhat "cleansed" before publication. One source I found says that the incest and murder committed by David were altered, among other things. It is four inches by seven inches, and includes 104 plates from engravings, 52 in the Old Testament, and 52 in the New Testament. There are 400 pages of text, plus the eight page introduction. Also, all the plates are on unnumbered pages, for a total of 512 printed pages. The book is in its original calves leather boards and spine, which are still attached but fragile. All pages, including all front and rear endpapers, are present. The last two plates have been repaired at the edges, and several pages inside have edge tears or stains, but they are minimal. There is the expected foxing throughout, and a former owner name and inscription in pencil at the front and a name alone in pencil at the rear. The leather of the boards and spine are rubbed and worn, and partially chipped off at the spine ends. The original black leather spine label with gilt titles is still present. A rare gem, the only copy I have ever seen of the original first printing from 1714. Johann Hübner (1668-1731) was a German geographer born in Türchau bei Zittau on May 15, 1668. He studied Theology, History and Geography in Leipzig from 1689 onwards. From 1691 he was Master, and then from 1694 Rector, of the Gymansium at Merseburg (Martisberg); then from … [Click Below for Full Description]

To these was added the disquisition on the marriage of a learned man by Mellemann who believes that there is no reason for learned man to fly from marriage. And indeed there is annexed the letter of Daniel Heinsius about wether and what sort of wife a learned man should marry. This argument weakens the case since it establishes such r … [Click Below for Full Description]
