MACHIAVELLI, NICOLAI. - [FIRST EDITION OF "THE PRINCE" IN GERMAN]
Cölln, Peter Marteau, (Recte: Jena, Bielcke), 1714. 8vo. Contemporary marbled boards, worn.Paper missing at foot of spine, corners bumped, and general wear. A damp stain to bottom of frontispiece and to title-page, otherwise internally very nice. Engraved frontispiece + (39), 272 pp. ¶ The exceedingly scarce first edition of the first printed translation into German of Machiavelli's masterpiece, "The Prince". <br><br>Machivelli's "Prince" constitutes the beginning of modern political philosophy and one of the most influential works in the history of modern thought. It founded the science of modern politics on the study of mankind, and even today no political thinker can disregard the importance of this masterpiece of political theory. Although the German translation of the work only saw the light of day in 1714, ab. 200 years after it was written, it came to have an anormous impact upon 18th and 19th century German thought and politics. Many even go so far as to say the history of German politics also in the 20th century, with Hitler and the outbreak of WWII, was partly caused by Hitler's fascination with Machivelli's masterpiece. <br><br>"In the first decade of the nineteenth century, a renaissance of interest in Machiavelli occurred in Germany. His works, especially The Prince, seemed startlingly relevant to the fragmented and enfeebled condition of the German-speaking lands. Hegel and Fichte noted the striking parallel between Machiavelli's Italy and present-day Germany: both were divided into petty states which were unable to co-operate even against the overwhelming thr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vieussens, Raymond
A Toulouse, Cehz Jean Guillemette, 1714, 4°, (12), 102, (6) pp., 6 Kupferstichtafeln mit 17 Figuren, feiner Halbledereinband. First Edition! "In 1715, the Montpellier surgeon Raymond Vieussens published his Traité nouveau de la structure de l'oreille.61 Significantly, it appeared alongside a groundbreaking work by the same author on the heart, Traité nouveaux de la structure de la Cour. Though these were completely separate treatises, Vieussens explained that he followed the same model of investigation in each work. This involved exploring physical-mechanical processes of "natural movement" surrounding both the heart and ear. Of all the senses, the ear most resembled the heart because it was a solid mechanism whose movement depended on the "esprit animal," the life force of the body entering inside the mechanism via an external anatomical part (the external ear). In his support of the "esprit animal," Vieussens followed the work of Thomas Willis. However, Vieussens' emphasis on bodily fluids and solids (arteries, air from breathing and received through the skin), rather than the nervous system of the brain, anticipated the later work by Théophile de Bordeu, another famous Montpellier doctor, on the pulse.63 For Bordeu, the pulse constructed its own rational trajectory throughout the human body according to bodily illness. In his treatise on the ear, Vieussens explained that since he found Duverney's treatise too difficult to understand, he aimed in his own work to give a clearer idea of the different parts, how they were constructed, and also to recognize the particular tis … [Click Below for Full Description]

Great Britain: 1714. A rare and fascinating book containing over 200 original hand-tinted British coats of arms dating from the reign of king George 1 (1714-1727) Many of the most prominent family names in British history are represented such as Byron, Cholmondley, Cornwallis, Windsor, Walpole, Hamilton and Somerset among others. The book has no date but begins with King George's coat of arms followed by that of his son HRH George Augustus, Prince of Wales, which would place it at the early 18th century. There are 186 full page hand- tinted coats of arms, (Page size is 19cm by 12cm) Two pages are missing-187 and 188. Two pages at the end contain smaller depictions and aren't tinted. Title and any pre-title pages are missing, front leather board is detached but present, rear board partly detached and has been reinforced with tape. Corners of the boards are rubbed and have the expected wear of a 300 year old book. .Backstrip has five raised bands and an impressed number 2, which suggests this is part of a set. Edges and pastedowns/feps are tanned. Owners ex-libris sticker with own coat of arms is on front cover pastedown. Sporadic foxing throughout, but most of the pages and illustrations are fairly clean, some pages have a small pencil tick to top right hand corner. A wonderful and rare volume.

TYSSOT DE PATOT, Simon.
Bourdeaux [i.e. The Hague]: Jaques L'Aveugle, 1710 [i.e. around 1714]. Duodecimo (158 x 92 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, red morocco label. Ownership label, neat ink note of author, and early catalogue description to front pastedown. Small chip at base of spine, front joint cracked but firm, some light browning, front free endpaper and frontispiece expertly reinserted. A very good copy. First edition of this early utopian novel, "the best-known of all the radical philosophical novels of the Early Enlightenment" and which "surpassed practically every other work of philosophical fiction of the age for notoriety" (Israel, pp. liii and lvi). The novel details a Frenchman shipwrecked off South Africa - the co-ordinates are given as 60°E/44°S, roughly around the Kerguelen Islands - where he finds a terrestrial paradise. Learning the language of the natives, the protagonist seeks to explain Christianity to them, who greet its central tenets as absurd, and its God as unjust. The hero continues his travels, and there hears a parable on Christianity that shocked the author's contemporaries - an absolute monarch, who owns bees, damns them for sucking nectar which had been prohibited merely to test his authority, send his son in bee form to redeem them, whereupon the different worshippers of the bee messiah kill each other, whilst bee priests live indolent lives on pious bees' labour. Rapidly banned in Holland and France, it nonetheless went through further Dutch editions, a French edition, three English editions, and two German editions by 1760. Tyssot's publicly denied writing the … [Click Below for Full Description]
