An appealing volume. * Processus: only edition; Constitutiones: sixth and final edition. The Processus is a comprehensive guide to the laws that apply to European soldiers. It is a digest of positive law and conventions established by treaty. Each point is illustrated with a case study. The work reflects both the greater destructive power of eighteenth century armaments and the Enlightenment-inspired movement to civilize the rules of military engagement. "Von der Section und Inspection des Coerpers," its eleventh chapter, is especially interesting. An early example of medical jurisprudence [Attributes: Hard Cover]

CITY OF NEW-YORK.[blank] ESQ; MAYOR OF THE CITY OF NEW-YORK. TO THE SHERIFF, CONSTABLES, AND OTHER HER MAJESTYS OFFICERS WITHIN THE SAID CITY, GREETING. KNOW YE, THAT I HAVE LICENSED.[blank] OF THE CITY AFORESAID, [blank] TO SELL WINE, BEER, BRANDY RUM, SYDER, OR ANY OTHER SORTS OF STRONG LIQUORS BY RETAIL.

[New York: Printed by William Bradford, -1714]. 1702 - Broadside, 7 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches. Light foxing. Very good. An unrecorded printed blank form for a retail alcohol sales license in New York city, produced for the Mayor's office during the first two decades of New York printing. The final lines of the form date the printing to the reign of Queen Anne (1702-14), during which time William Bradford was the only working printer in New York. William Bradford (1663-1752) was the "pioneering printer of the English middle colonies" (DAB) - the first in both Pennsylvania and New York. He originally settled in Pennsylvania, where he began operating a printing press in 1685 and a bookstore in 1688. Various controversies led to significant legal hassles there, including the temporary seizure of his types and paper in 1692, and in 1693 Bradford answered a call to come to New York and print the acts of assembly and other official papers for the colonial council. No records have been found locating an alcohol license form printed in New York earlier than the present document, making this the first known example of its kind. DAB II, pp.563-64.

[New York: Printed by William Bradford, -1714]. 1702 - Broadside, 7 1/4 x 11 1/2 inches. Edge toned, lightly foxed. Very good. A very rare early 18th-century printed blank form for sea vessels, likely from the press of William Bradford, New York's first printer. The completed form would certify that the holder had cleared customs for a journey, recording the name of his vessel and its tonnage, arms, crew, origin, and itinerary. The only recorded copies of this imprint were found as endpapers (one free, one pastedown) in a volume owned by Michael Zinman and now held by the Library Company of Philadelphia. Both the Zinman and present copies were discovered bound with volumes of early New York laws in Bradford bindings, making it clear that they were products of his press. Further, the final printed lines date the document to the reign of Queen Anne (1702-14), during which time Bradford was the only printer in New York. NAIP mzrecordcopy154.

Contents: I. The antiquities of the Jews, in twenty books. II. Their wars with the Romans, in seven books. III. The life of Josephus written by himself. IV. His book against Apion, in defence of the antiquities of the Jews, in two parts. V. The martyrdom of the Maccabees. VI. Philo's Embassy from the Jews of Alexandria to Caius Caligula. Subjects: Jewish studies -- History -- Sources -- Jews -- Antiquities -- Judaism. Notes: Lacking title page. Lacking pages 1109-1130 of index. Errata listed at bottom of p.18 of first register. Biographical note: Josephus was a soldier, translator and early historian of the Jewish culture and the First Roman-Jewish War. After leading the Jewish armies against Rome, Josephus was captured and detained as a translator for Vespasian and Titus, eventually earning his freedom and becoming a Roman citizen. He then negotiated against Jerusalem on behalf of the Roman army, the failure of which led to sacking the city. His historical works have been studied extensively for clues into Roman culture, Judaism, early Christianity and the Dead Sea Scrolls.

This beautiful map of the British Isles is extending west to east from Kerry to Oldenbourg and north to south from The Shetland Islands to Normandy, coloured by region.         Anabaptisticum et Enthusiasticum

Kothen [] - No Publisher Given 1702 - A scarce copy of this controversial pro-Lutheran work from the early eighteenth-century in fourteen pamphlets. In German and Latin, written inGothic script. Illustrated throughout with fifty-three engraved plates. From the antiquarian library of Emeritus Professor David A. Palin of the University of Manchester (signature to front pastedown), collected over a period of almost forty years. The work is a collection of items, each with its own title-page and pagination. Although the attribution to Johann Friedrich Corvinus as the compiler is according to a note on the front pastedown citing R. Foth writing in The Mennonite Encyclopaedia and is followed by the Oxford catalogue, on the blank opposite the title page there is a note in German from about the end of the 18th century saying that the catalogue of the library of Abbot Molanus ascribes the work to Henry George Neuss (who was the author of the final item in the compilation. ) [From the catalogue of David Palin's private library]. Tipped-in ink description reads, 'A strange pamphleteering volume, large folio in size, with over 1,000 pages, was compiled in 1702 by a certain Johann Friedrich Corvinus (Rabe), a Lutheran minister of Hornburg (died 1724). The volume contains 14 different pamphlets attacking practically everyone who was not of the strict Lutheran orthodoxy of about 1700. It attacks above all the Quakers, but also Mystics, Pansophists (Rosicrucians), all kinds of Pietists (e. g. , Labadie), philosophers such as Descartes, Spinoza and Hobbes, Jews, Cromwell and his Puritans, and, last but not least, the old and new fanatics of Anabaptist spirit (pamphlet II). Yet, in the text proper, only Thomas Mntzer is discussed. Condition: In a vellum binding. Externally, a little worn, with marks and slight wear to the extremities. Hinges are slightly strained. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places, with one plate detached. Institutional ink stamps to front pastedown and endpapers, with ink inscription and tipped-in synopsis of the work, along with a second tipped-in synopsis attributing the work to a different author to the front free-endpaper. Evidence of past worming to first few pages. Pages are quite bright considering the age, though with some light background foxing and some offsetting. Overall: GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
