        Anabaptisticum et Enthusiasticum

Kothen [] - No Publisher Given 1702 - A scarce copy of this controversial pro-Lutheran work from the early eighteenth-century in fourteen pamphlets. In German and Latin, written inGothic script. Illustrated throughout with fifty-three engraved plates. From the antiquarian library of Emeritus Professor David A. Palin of the University of Manchester (signature to front pastedown), collected over a period of almost forty years. The work is a collection of items, each with its own title-page and pagination. Although the attribution to Johann Friedrich Corvinus as the compiler is according to a note on the front pastedown citing R. Foth writing in The Mennonite Encyclopaedia and is followed by the Oxford catalogue, on the blank opposite the title page there is a note in German from about the end of the 18th century saying that the catalogue of the library of Abbot Molanus ascribes the work to Henry George Neuss (who was the author of the final item in the compilation. ) [From the catalogue of David Palin's private library]. Tipped-in ink description reads, 'A strange pamphleteering volume, large folio in size, with over 1,000 pages, was compiled in 1702 by a certain Johann Friedrich Corvinus (Rabe), a Lutheran minister of Hornburg (died 1724). The volume contains 14 different pamphlets attacking practically everyone who was not of the strict Lutheran orthodoxy of about 1700. It attacks above all the Quakers, but also Mystics, Pansophists (Rosicrucians), all kinds of Pietists (e. g. , Labadie), philosophers such as Descartes, Spinoza and Hobbes, Jews, Cromwell and his Puritans, and, last but not least, the old and new fanatics of Anabaptist spirit (pamphlet II). Yet, in the text proper, only Thomas Mntzer is discussed. Condition: In a vellum binding. Externally, a little worn, with marks and slight wear to the extremities. Hinges are slightly strained. Internally, generally firmly bound although strained in places, with one plate detached. Institutional ink stamps to front pastedown and endpapers, with ink inscription and tipped-in synopsis of the work, along with a second tipped-in synopsis attributing the work to a different author to the front free-endpaper. Evidence of past worming to first few pages. Pages are quite bright considering the age, though with some light background foxing and some offsetting. Overall: GOOD. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Woodcut diagrams in the text. 3 p.l., 5-55, [9], 95, [1] pp. Small 4to, 18th-cent. calf (rebacked & recornered), red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: Typis TB. for A. & I. Churchill et al., 1702. Third edition; the first edition appeared in 1690 and the second in 1697. Raphson (d. 1715 or 1716), also wrote the important History of Fluxions (1715) and translated Newton's Arithmetica Universalis into English (1720). He was a fellow of the Royal Society. "In 1690, Joseph Raphson...published a tract, Analysis aequationum universalis. His method closely resembles that of Newton. The only difference is this, that Newton derives each successive step, p, q, r, of approach to the root, from a new equation, while Raphson finds it each time by substitution in the original equation...Raphson does not mention Newton; he evidently considered the difference sufficient for his method to be classed independently. To be emphasized is the fact that the process which in modern texts goes by the name of 'Newton's method of approximation,' is really not Newton's method, but Raphson's modification of it...It is doubtful, whether this method should be named after Newton alone...Raphson's version of the process represents what J. Lagrange recognized as an advance on the scheme of Newton...Perhaps the name 'Newton-Raphson method' would be a designation more nearly representing the facts of history."-Cajori, A History of Mathematics, p. 203. The first edition is very rare. The Appendix appears for the first time in the second edition of 1697 along with the separately paginated second part De Spatio reali. Fine fresh copy. 19th-century bookplate of P. Duncan. .

        Aleppo.

1702 - Delft, c.1698. Two sheets conjoined, total 295 x 1030mm. A fine panoramic print of the city of Aleppo in Syria engraved by Henrik van Krooneveld. In 1675 the Dutch painter Cornelis de Bruyn (1652-1727) set out from Livorno on a journey through the Levant, publishing an richly illustrated account on his return which was called 'Reizen. door Klein Asia.van Aegypten, Syrien en Palestina.' De Bruyn actually lived in Aleppo with merchants employed in the caravan trade, from May 1682 to April 1683, which explains why these traders are so prominent in the foreground of this print.

        Pièces de théâtre.

La Haye, Adrian Moetjens 1702 - LA FONTAINE, Jean de. PIECES DE THEATRE. La Haye, Adrian Moetjens, M. DCC.II. (1702). In-12 de (5) ff., 296 pp., (2)ff., (2) ff., X pp., 84 pp., (1) p., (6) ff., 82 pp., (1) p. Vélin ivoire de l?époque, traces d?attache, titre calligraphié au dos, tranches jaspées, infimes rousseurs. Reliure de l?époque. 150 x 86 mm.

The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in Englandis a work begun in exile during the late 1640s and was revised and completed in renewed exile after Clarendon?s fall from royal favour in 1667. Clarendon was a close adviser to two kings, and his intimacy with many of the key events is unrivaled. Though his narrative is inevitably partisan, the ambitious range of his analysis and his mastery of character portraiture make the History an extraordinary accomplishment. Almost fifty years later, Clarendon's great-grandson presented his papers and manuscripts to Oxford University on the understanding that all profits from the copyright of the History were to be used to finance buildings for the University press. This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside of Canada and the US. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

All items are in a good to very good condition, loosely gathered in a folder of vellum-covered boards, probably removed from a 19th century book. The older documents are slightly edge-nicked and tanned as with age, but still legible. The later documents are quite clean and bright, with just some dulling around the edges. Overall, this unique and rare collection of documents remains particularly well-preserved overall. Further scans, images etc. and additional bibliographical material available on request.. A small archive of original documents relating to the Quilter family. There appears to be a connection between a number of the families mentioned in these documents and 'The Kings Candlesticks' that relate to George IV and the Julius family. Three handwritten sheets of family trees (late 16th century to 1931) that feature the names of Quilter of Staple in Kent (16th century), Rumball (18th-19th century), Julius, Quilter, Palmes [or Palmer], Rowland and others. The original documents range from 1702 to 1848 and include ordination certificates, landlord-tenant agreements, articles of clerkship and wills, some with their original seals. Contents include: Deacon ordination certificate awarded to George Quilter, signed by the Bishop of Ely, 27th September, 1816. The collection also includes a 19th century handwritten personal booklet/diary of religious verse and French poetry, transcribed from various works. Placenames mentioned, and repeated, in the listed documents include: Ely, Canterbury, Walbrook in the City of London and Lincoln. Also included is a typed letter from C. Cary Gilson addressed to the Quilters, West Chiltington Common, Sussex regarding the Quilter family connections to Lord Horatio Nelson's wife. Gilson quotes Aunt Nona: "my great grandfather owned St. Kitts... The widow Mrs. Nesbitt was a relation of his and married Lord Nelson." Nelson and Nisbet were married at Montpelier Estate on the island of Nevis on 11 March 1787, shortly before the end of his tour of duty in the Caribbean. The work reflects both the greater destructive power of eighteenth century armaments and the Enlightenment-inspired movement to civilize the rules of military engagement. "Von der Section und Inspection des Coerpers," its eleventh chapter, is especially interesting. An early example of medical jurisprudence
