The History of the Rebellion and Civil Wars in Englandis a work begun in exile during the late 1640s and was revised and completed in renewed exile after Clarendon?s fall from royal favour in 1667. Clarendon was a close adviser to two kings, and his intimacy with many of the key events is unrivaled. Though his narrative is inevitably partisan, the ambitious range of his analysis and his mastery of character portraiture make the History an extraordinary accomplishment. Almost fifty years later, Clarendon's great-grandson presented his papers and manuscripts to Oxford University on the understanding that all profits from the copyright of the History were to be used to finance buildings for the University press. This is an oversized or heavy book that requires additional postage for international delivery outside of Canada and the US. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Overall, this unique and rare collection of documents remains particularly well-preserved overall. Further scans, images etc. and additional bibliographical material available on request.. Three handwritten sheets of family trees (late 16th century to 1931) that feature the names of Quilter of Staple in Kent (16th century), Rumball (18th-19th century), Julius, Quilter, Palmes [or Palmer], Rowland and others. The original documents range from 1702 to 1848 and include ordination certificates, landlord-tenant agreements, articles of clerkship and wills, some with their original seals. Contents include: Deacon ordination certificate awarded to George Quilter, signed by the Bishop of Ely, 27th September, 1816. With original seal. -- Chaplain certificate: "George Quilter to be licensed to perform the office of Chaplain of the workhouse of the Lincoln Union in the county of Lincoln", May 29th, 1837. -- Canon certificate awarded to George Quilter, signed by the Bishop of Lincoln, 16th Dec. 1870. -- "Inventory of furniture and effects in the house in Malbrook belonging to Mr. Quilter, 1st Jan. 1702." -- "Inventory and appraisemet of furniture and effects in Walbrook from Mr. Quilter to Mr. Keating, 24 January, 1702." -- "Schedule of fixtures to be appraised to Mr. Quilter from Mr. Keating 23 June 1703." -- "Valuation of fixtures taken in the house of Mr. Dyson by Mr. Quilter, Dec. 6th, 1777." -- "Schedule of fixtures to be appraised from Mr. Quilter to Mr. Cameron, 1st October 1783." -- Articles of clerkship between William Lee and John Rumball. 1770. With original seals. -- Articles of clerkship between James Rumball Quilter and Robert Gatty. 1st May 1779. With original seals. This document states: "James Rumball Quilter of Walbrook in the City of London." -- Copy of the last will and testament of Francis Russell Nixon (1803-1879), the first Bishop of Tasmania. -- Last will and testament of Julius Quilter, 2nd Sept, 1848. The collection also includes a 19th century handwritten personal booklet/diary of religious verse and French poetry, transcribed from various works. Placenames mentioned, and repeated, in the listed documents include: Ely, Canterbury, Walbrook in the City of London and Lincoln. Also included is a typed letter from C. Cary Gilson addressed to the Quilters, West Chiltington Common, Sussex regarding the Quilter family connections to Lord Horatio Nelson's wife. Gilson quotes Aunt Nona: "my great grandfather owned St. Kitts... The widow Mrs. Nesbitt was a relation of his and married Lord Nelson." Nelson and Nisbet were married at Montpelier Estate on the island of Nevis on 11 March 1787, shortly before the end of his tour of duty in the Caribbean. The marriage was registered at Fig Tree Church, St John's Parish, Nevis. Nelson returned to England in July, with Fanny following later (Sugden, John (2004). Nelson: A Dream of Glory).

First editions of the first and second works, third edition of the Praxis Metallica.& & David Kellner, court physician at Nordhausen, of whose life little is known, was a significant figure in the transition from alchemy to modern chemistry. In his works and compilations of others’ works on assaying and metallurgical chemistry he attempted to “free this literature, and indeed all scientific publication, from the fantasies of alchemists. To this end he wrote for a lay audience and for future scientists, rather than for an exclusive circle of initiates” (DSB). Author of a number of serious “contributions to the science of assaying [in which he] sought to state, as clearly as possible, prescriptions and methods for experimentation,” he also wrote a rare comedy on alchemy which is “nowhere mentioned by historians of German literature” (op. cit.). Kellner has been equally neglected by historians of science and his works would deserve further study: “there is no secondary literature of any value that deals with his importance as a physician or ? and here the omission is more surprising ? with his contribution to the development of specialized literature in the field of metallurgy” (ibid.) & & I: A compilation treating saltworks and the chemistry of salpetre, bringing together material from Wilhem von Schroder’s Fürstliche Schatz- und Rentkammer, and from works by Johannes Mathesius, Peter Eichholtz, Johann Friedrich Suchland, Johann Ludwig Glaser, and Jan Baptiste van Helmont. The last section, by Kellner, is aN ANNOTATED GEOGRAPHICAL LIST OF MINES AND MINERAL DEPOSITS THROUGHOUT GERMANY. The engraved title shows four scenes of miners, assayers, and smelting works. NUC lists 4 copies in the US (OCLC listing only German libraries). Hoover Collection 474; Rosenthal, Bibliotheca magica, 924.& & II: As promised by its title, the Aerarium chymicum is as promised by its title a “treasure trove” of chemical and alchemical recipes, in part translated from Martin Schmuck’s “little treasure chest” of secrets (Secretorum naturalium, chymicorum et medicorum Thesauriolus oder Schatzkästlein), first published in 163 .Kellner doubled the 100 assaying recipes that had appeared in the 1686 edition of Schmuck’s Schatzkästlein, adding recipes from several manuscript sources. This appears to be the FIRST COMPLETE BOOK PRINTED IN DELITZSCH, preceded only by a funeral sermon (cf. Benzing p. 81). A variant issue of this edition has& the appendix in 22 instead of 15 leaves. (The imprint date “1701” occasionally cited by bibliographers is an error due to the blurred impression of the red-printed date on the title-page.) NUC & OCLC locate 5 US copies. Ferguson I:456 (part 2 in 15 ff. as here); Blake, p. 241; Wellcome III:383; Rosenthal, Bibliotheca magica, 473 (the last two with the appendix in 22 ff.).& & III: Third edition (1st 1693), an original work containing dozens of recipes for assaying, smelting, and purifying metals. A search of OCLC & NUC reveals one US copy of the 1693 edition (Penn) only.& & On Kellner, cf. DSB 7:283-4; Partington II:731; Schmieder, Geschichte der Alchemie, p. 513; Poggendorf I:1240.& &

The Scottish Historical Library...Records, Registers, Law-Books...

1702. Nicolson, W[illiam] [1655-1727]. The Scottish Historical Library: Containing a Short View and Character of Most of the Writers, Records, Registers, Law-Books, &c. Which May be Serviceable to the Undertakers of a General History of Scotland, Down to the Union of the Two Kingdoms in K. James VI. London: Printed for T. Childe, 1702. [ii], 4, xxxix, [1], 376 (i.e. 392) pp. Octavo (4-3/4" x 7-1/2"). Contemporary paneled calf, raised bands to spine, crudely rebacked, endpapers renewed. Light rubbing, moderate wear to board edges and corners. Later bookplate (of Robert Maxtone Graham) to front free endpaper. Lower corner lacking from a leaf with no loss to text. Light toning, light foxing to sections of text, interior otherwise clean. * First edition. Nicolson was the Bishop of Carlisle and a keen antiquarian. First published between 1696 and 1724, his Library, which comprises volumes on England, Ireland and Scotland is an important work of antiquarian scholarship that was not superseded for many years. The Dictionary of National Biography notes that although "[Nicolson's] haste in speech and in print led him into many mistakes, ...[the Library] was of immense utility." (XIV:501). It is still a useful source, especially for legal historians. Though reissued as a set in 1736, these volumes, despite their similar titles and format, were originally issued as independent works. Robert Maxtone Graham was a notable Scottish book collector. Sweet & Maxwell, A Legal Bibliography of the British Commonwealth 1:4 (38)..

The history of King Lear, acted at the Queens Theatre

London: Printed for Rich. Wellington, and E. Rumbold; and Tho. Osborne,, [1702?]. London: Printed for Rich. Wellington, and E. Rumbold; and Tho. Osborne,, [1702?]. Revived with alterations. By N. Tate. Small quarto (218 × 167 mm). Lately rebound in full calf, sides decorated in blind and gilt, red morocco spine label. In a custom brown morocco-backed folding case. Pp. 6, 7 misnumbered 56, 57. Small tear at foot of last leaf not affecting text, a little close at head just shaving the running headline on sig. I1-2 but preserving several deckle edges at foot, a good copy. Fourth edition thus, Tate's version having first been published in 1681. Tate's adaptation met with immediate acceptance and held the stage until the middle of the 19th century. Famous tragedians such as Thomas Betterton, David Garrick, and John Philip Kemble, all acclaimed in the role of Lear, were portraying Tate's Lear, not Shakespeare's. Tate's version shortens the play by some 800 lines, removes the character of the Fool, and gives the play a happy ending, with Cordelia marrying Edgar, and Lear (like Charles II) being restored to his throne. Although Tate's version was condemned by many later critics for sentimentality, the modern consensus regards it as "arguably an intelligent response to features of Shakespeare's original which distinguished critics such as Dr Johnson have found equally perplexing and problematic" (ODNB). With his libretto for Henry Purcell's Dido and Aeneas, it remains Tate's most famous dramatic work. Formerly thought to date from the 1690s, the publication date of this edition is suggested by ESTC.
