MANUSCRIPT.
1703. Folio Ledger [39.1 x 15.8 cms.], 18 pages of fine manuscript on 13 leaves, plus 78 blank leaves. Contemporary vellum with ties, a little torn at the head of the spine, else in excellent condition. *A wonderful, evocative listing of the household material of this noble household from over three hundred years ago. There are 26 entries for blankets and 48 entries for pewter; by contrast, 9 for silver plait and 11 for trunks and chists. Niddry [Niddrie] Castle is in Linlithgow, West Lothian. It was owned by a branch of the Hope family, descendants from Sir Charles Hope, grandson of Sir James Hope, sixth son of Sir Thomas Hope, 1st Baronet, of Craighall (see Hope baronets). In 1703 he was created Lord Hope, Viscount Aithrie and Earl of Hopetoun in the Peerage of Scotland, with remainder to the heirs male and female of his body. He later served as Lord Lieutenant of Linlithgowshire and as Governor of the Bank of Scotland. Lord Hopetoun married Lady Henrietta, only surviving daughter of William Johnstone, 1st Marquess of Annandale (died 1721). He was succeeded by his eldest son, the second Earl. In 1763 he succeeded his kinsman as fourth Baronet, of Kirkliston (see Hope baronets for earlier history of this title). Perhaps this inventory was written for the newly created Lord Hope in anticipation of the family removal to Hopetoun House.

BOUCHER, François.
7, 7 engraved ll.Two rare print series (part 2 especially rare) showing beautiful, rich and decorative designs for fountains by François Boucher (1703-1770), famous French painter and decorative draughtsman, professor and later director of the Paris Academy, inspector of the Gobelin manufacture at Paris, and "premier peintre du Roi". The present two series show some of his best work, richly decorative forms in an early rococo style, incorporating (mostly wingless) putti, naked water nymphs (naiads), merfolk, a satyr, Neptune in his seahorse-drawn chariot, other water gods and godesses, shells, dolphins, sea monsters, a swan and other animals. Some were actually built: the Neptune print may have inspired Barthélemy Guibal's 1750 Fontaine de Neptune at the Place Royale in Nancy. Extra inserted: 18th century engraved copy of plate 6 of the first series, showing a rich design with two Tritons blowing shell trumpets, unsigned. From the Library of Jean Fürstenberg (1890-1982), co-founder of the Association Internationale de Bibliophilie, with his book-label. The last print is slightly worn at a former fold and about half show small marginal holes or marginal restorations, none approaching the plate edge and otherwise in very good condition and with large margins.l Berlin Kat. 3581; J. CRESPEL, Emmanuel.
[8], 135, [1 blank] pp.Second edition of Crespel's account, edited by his brother Louis. Emmanuelle Crespel (1703-1775) sailed for Quebec in the Chameau in 1724. Two years later he was ordained priest and subsequently served at Fort Richelieu. While in Canada he accompanied a punitive expedition to raid the Fox Indians (in present-day Wisonsin), who were disrupting French trade around Lake Michigan. "Crespel's account provides the only account of that expedition" (Howgego). Crespel was called back to France in 1736 and left Quebec in the Renommée, which was wrecked on the southern tip of Anticosti Island after 11 days. He wintered in Anticosti, surviving famine, illness and the harrowing cold, finally reaching France in 1737.Crespel relates these adventures in the form of letters written from Paderborn (Germany) in 1742 to his brother Louis, who inscribed the present copy. With modern bookplate. In very good condition with only some minor browning and staining. The binding slightly chafed and the foot of the spine chipped. Crespel's "relation is an important supplement to those of Sagard and Le Clerq on the same region" (Streeter).l Howes C-880; Howgego, to 1800, C218; Huntress 49C; Sabin 17476; cf. In 8 ° (cm. 16 x 10, 5), Seiten (8), 515, (3), 1 Leerzeichen. 1703. (COSTANTINO GRIMALDI): "ANSWER TO THE THIRD APOLOGETIC LETTER AGAINST THE CARTESIUM BELIEVED BY MORE D'ARISTOTELE BY BENEDETTO ALETINO. OPERA, IN WHICH IT SHOWS HOW MUCH BALANCE IT IS, WHEN IS THE PHILOSOPHY OF RENATO DELLE CARTE AND WHY THIS MUST BE ESTIMATED MORE THAN ARISTOTELE ". Cologne (but Naples), Sebastiano Hecht, 1703. In 8 ° (cm. 16 x 10, 5), pages (8), 515, (3), 1 blank. Coeval parchment binding (some defects in the upper cuff without leaks). Very rare FIRST EDITION, very well preserved, of this philosophical work but ESPECIALLY SCIENTIFIC (see photo and subsequent description). '' This answer, even more than the first two (appeared respectively in 1699 and 1702) represents one of the most important documents in the diffusion of Descartes' thought and works in the Neapolitan environment '' (DBIt., Vol. 59, p. 491). The work is part of the interminable controversy with the Jesuit Giovan Battista de Benedictis, who in 1694, under the pseudonym of Benedetto Aleatino, published in Naples the `` Apologetic letters in defense of school theology and peripatetic philosophy '', containing among other things, harsh attacks on Cartesian thought. Although Grimaldi's work enjoyed considerable success and the favor of many illustrious personalities of the time, including Gravina, Muratori, Magliabechi and Mabillon, in 1726, following the publication in the previous year in Lucca of a new edition, with new added and with the specific intent to affirm the "libertas philosophandi", the condemnation of the congregation of the Index came inexorably to hit both the first and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Seller's financial troubles, however, precluded any further editions, and it was not until four years after his death, in 1701, that another fragmentary 'Third Book' was reissued by Thomas Mount and William Page, whom had probably acquired the plates and text from Seller's one time business partner William Fisher. It would not be until 1703, when John Thornton published a rival edition, that a complete seaman's guide and set of printed charts for navigation to and in Southeast Asia was bought to market. Thornton was part of the consortium that had overseen the publication of the first edition of 1675, and his position as hydrographer to the East India Company (E.I.C.) meant he had a ready supply of charts of the area. In fact we know that Thornton had access to some of the most up-to-date charts of the region, due to a collection of 17 manuscript charts signed by him, now housed in the BnF. The charts are most likely those taken from the East Indiaman, the Canterbury, by two French s … [Click Below for Full Description]

SOMNER, William
London: for R. Knaplock, 1703. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. William Somner was a 17th-century English scholar who was known for his Anglo-Saxon language dictionary and his studies on the antiquities of Canterbury. Somner's first work in 1640 was 'The Antiquities of Canterbury' in which he surveys the history of the city and environs of Canterbury. It covers the earliest times of Canterbury focusing on castles, cathedrals, monks and ecclesiastical history, as well as geographical history - rivers, streets, and hospitals. This 1703 first folio edition was edited and enlarged by Nicolas Battely who included impressive full-page maps and illustrations. Lowndes even notes that his book is "an excellent work"! [AUTOGRAPH]. VERJUS, Antoine de.
[Letter to M[adam]e la Duchelle d'Avegry[?]]. [Paris, December? 1703]. Small 4to (19 x 14 cm). Autograph letter in French, signed, written in dark brown ink in a Latin hand on paper. [3], [1 blank] pp. Signed autograph letter written by Antoine Verjus (1632-1706), Parisian Jesuit procurator for the Indian and Chinese missions from 1678 to 1702 and, on the evidence of the present letter still in 1703. He reports on various Jesuits who have left for China, notes the importance of the work and the honour it has brought to others (explicitly noting the Duchess of Alba), and appears to be seeking patronage. In the 1690s Verjus had corresponded with Leibniz and helped him establish contacts in China. He spent much of his career attempting to establish a safer and more reliable connection between Europe and China. He distrusted the motives of his colleagues in other European countries, even fellow Jesuits, and succeeded in diverting funding for missions from Lisbon to Paris. He found much support in Germany, however, especially the Prince-Bishop of Münster, Ferdinand von Fürstenberg. "Verjus' correspondence ... illustrates his pivotal role in reshaping Jesuit transport and communication networks." (Vermote p. 32). The letter was formerly folded horizontally and vertically, probably for sending, and one corner is slightly damaged with no loss of text. In very good condition. An important primary source on French Jesuit missionary work in China and it financing. Cf. F. Vermote, The role of urban real estate in Jesuit finances and networks between Europe and China, 1612-1778 (2013).

Brevis relatio eorum, quae spectant ad declarationem Sinarum Imperatoris KamHi circa caeli, Cumfucii, et avorum cultum, datam anno 1700. ...Augsburg and Dillingen, Johann Kaspar Bencard, 1703. Small 8vo (15.5 x 9 cm). Contemporary sheepskin parchment. [1], [1 blank], 85, [1 blank] pp. Rare first European edition, in the original Latin, of a Jesuit work on the religious and cultural circumstances in China under the Kangxi (here KamHi) Emperor (1654-1722), including the Emperor's edict of tolerance toward Christians and the controversial Jesuit arguement that Confucian rites and veneration of ancestors were non-religious and therefore compatible with Christianity. Although the title-page gives no author's name, the text is signed at the end by the principal author Antoine Thomas (1644-1709), Jesuit advisor to the Emperor, together with nine other Jesuits. With owner's stamp and a bookplate of Baron Horace de Landau (1824-1903). With the title-page very slightly slurred during printing and its lower outside corner torn off, but otherwise in very good condition, with only an occasional spot. Mice have nibbled away some of the parchment, but they fortunately decided not to sample the paperboards or paper, and the binding is otherwise good. FIRST EDITION, second issue, of this book of English secrets. The first edition was published under the title of Apopiroscopy in 1702. The current issue is the original sheets with the title page as a cancel (this is clear when you compare the paper of the title page with the rest of the book). Neve was a popular English conjurer, remembered for his Merry companion, a book of magic tricks published 18 years later (the work was reissued as Hocus pocus: or the cabinet of legerdemain). The Arts improvement covers a wide range of subjects including the preservation of meats and fish; fruit; vegetables; on liquors and juices; as well as how to make wine. Other sections discuss the staining and dying of woods; carving; gilding; varnishing; construction and the choice of building materials; agricultural and horticultural issues; grafting; pruning; and how to control plant disease. A final part is devoted to magic tricks, or "Experiments and observations ludicrous." In this chapter he gives directions for thirty-seven parlor games and illusions, from "cutting a drinking glass like a screw" to "charming serpents" to "putting a lighted candle, &c. under water." There is even a culinary trick where one is "roasting three capons...on one spit, and one shall be roasted, the other boiled, and the third raw."
