Fascinating map of the North Pole by Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) for his Atlas Novus exhibens orbem terraguem per naturae opera, historiae navae acveterus monumenta, artistique geographicae leges et praecepta...published in eight volumes from 1702-1710 in Munich. Scherer, a devout Jesuit, produced this geographical compendium to depict the Catholic hierarchy and the spread of Jesuit missions throughout the world. The map itself presents typical cartography for the period, leaving open the possibility of both a Northeast and Northwest Passage to the Far East. The map is literally filled with images of sea monsters, whaling, hunting and exploration. The title cartouche is engraved onto the hide of a polar bear with two hunters, and at right is a vignette of the people of Lapland. Copper etching, some light stains, otherwise in good condition.

Sinclair, Archibald, Sir, 1664-1719
[Edinburgh]: 1703. First Edition. Softcover. Together two volumes, small quarto. 12 pp., COMPLETE. Stitched in old blue paper wrappers at a recent date. Contemporary (or near-contemporary) author attributions in ink on title-pages, faint blind-stamps on first and final leaves of both pamphlets. Very good. BOTH editions of Sinclair's pamphlet recommending Scottish parliamentary reform, such as a triennial act, as well as toleration for dissent. The pamphlet demonstrates a royalist thread in Country discourse that can be linked to Episcopalian interests. ¶ Two editions appeared in 1703, both sina loca (but Edinburgh). The first edition is ESTC T57077. The second edition is distinguished by the title: 'Some thoughts *upon* the present state of affairs' (ESTC T155643). Priority is here established for the first time, afforded by careful examination of both editions side-by-side; it seems probable that ESTC T155643 was printed from ESTC T57077: compare the catchword on p. 2: in ESTC T155643 this catchword is typographically defective and seems to tumble outside the margin, whereas in ESTC T57077 the catchword, all all associated justification, is quite perfect. ¶ Sir Archibald, knight, (Baronet of Longformacus) was M.P. for Kirkwall, Orkney, and served in the Scottish Parliament for Wick from 1690-1702. He was admitted to Advocate in 1695, and was invested as a Knight ca. 1697 (cf. Burke's Peerage, 1847, p. 905, and Cokayne's Baronetage, reprinted 1983, vol. III, p. 351). Hanson, 261. Kress, S-2273. Index. The English edition has an added map of Newfoundland, not in the first French edition published the same year. His work is considered one of the first comprehensive descripions of the western part of the continent. HOWES L25. "Lahontan's narrative, of considerable value when confined to his actual sojournyings in the Lake region, was unfortunately disfigured by his inserting an account of a pretended trip west of the Mississippi, about as convincing as the legends of the sea-serpents." With all HOWES' first issue points -- on pages 280 (Vol.I) and 302 (Vol.II) respectively. LARNED 3642. "It will not serve as a text book nor a historic guide, but is of much value as a clear and fearless picture of Canada, and the Canadians of his day....For spirit and brightness there is nothing in Canadian literature which approaches it, save some othe earlier letters of Lamothe Cadillac." Sebastiano Izquierdo was also the author of Pharus scientiarum, a treatise on a methodology to access knowledge, conceived as a single science. In this work, he assimilated Aristotelian and Baconian logic, and he expressed some original ideas on mathematics and logic that have earned their author a reputation as an outstanding mathematician. Not just like his Spanish contemporaries John Caramuel or Tomás Vicente Tosca , but also significant foreign mathematicians as Athanasius Kircher , Gaspar Knittel or Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz , the latter, in particular, cited with, his Disputatio of Combinatione, in Combinatorial Art (1666). NESTENUS, John Michael. - Son of George and Elizabeth of Piero Bandini, was born in Florence in the second half of the seventeenth century. SAUVEUR, Joseph
A manuscript treatise in two parts, on astronomy, and on cosmography and longitude. The first and larger part is on the movement of the earth, the sun, stars and planets, the positions and orbits of which are shown in the exquisitely finished coloured plates, where the systems of Ptolemy, Copernicus and Tycho Brahe are also compared. The second part, Book II, is on latitude and longitude, the geography of the earth and its zones and climates. This part is illustrated with the last three plates. It includes the problems of finding the latitude, longitude, and exact time of a particular place. While navigators had been able to find their latitude with some accuracy, this is a very early study of longitude. As in England, it was perhaps prompted by the loss of part of a squadron of British naval ships on the Scilly Isles in 1707. Joseph Sauveur (1653-1716) was educated at the famous Jesuit school at La Flèche, where he was born, and later went to Paris to study medicine and, his real interest, mathematics. Despite a congenital speech defect he was a good teacher and became a tutor to nobility at the court of Louis XIV. He worked on hydraulic experiments with Mariotte and undertook research for a treatise on fortification, but his greatest work was on harmonics. He obtained the chair of mathematics at the Collège Royal in 1686, and became a member of the Académie Royale des Sciences in 1696. This manuscript, which is unpublished, can be dated to between 1703 and 1716 as Sauveur is described on the title-page as Examinateur des Ingenieurs de France, a position he obtained in 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

NOLIN (Jean-Baptiste).
Paris, J.B. Nolin, 1703. 425 x 489 mm.
