1701 Dutch Hazart Church History JESUIT Missions Illustrated TORTURE Martyrs

Wienn [Vienna]: Gedruckt und verlegt durch L. Voigt, 1701. - 1701 Dutch Hazart Church History JESUIT Missions Illustrated TORTURE Martyrs Cornelius Hazart was a 17th-century Dutch Jesuit priest and controversialist writer. His “Ecclesiastical History of the Whole World” delivered on the ‘controversial’ side of church history, as Hazart explored some of the most detestable acts of the church including tortures, imprisonments, wars on religion, and brutal executions, such as drowning, hangings, beheadings, and burnings. This 1701 printing is translated and enlarged from the first Antwerp edition from 1667. This book covers church history throughout Europe, including Germany, France, Netherlands, and England, with parts dedicated to the Americas and Africa. This universal church history is unquestionably Hazart’s greatest work, and is ideal for historical perspective on Jesuit missions and missionaries around the world, as well as martyrs throughout church history. It is filled with 55 engravings depicting important church figures such as Saint Ambrose, Charles I of the Holy Roman Empire, Leonard Vechelius, Alexander Earnesius, Thomas More, Saint John Fisher, Mary Stuart, and more.          Considerations Upon the East-India Trade.

London: A. and J. Churchill, 1701 - Octavo (191 x 116 mm). Recent full calf, double-rule blindstamped border to boards, spine ruled in blind, red morocco label. Extremities very lightly rubbed, upper margin of title with ragged edge, title and lower margin lightly soiled, leaf edges a little browned in places; a very good copy. First edition, republished in 1720 under the title of The Advantages of the East India Trade to England considered, described by McCulloch as "a profound, able, and most ingenious tract." He goes on to state that "the author is probably the first who has conclusively shown the advantage of employing machinery, and cheaper methods of production, in the manufacture of commodities; and who has shown that such employment is not injurious, but advantageous to the labourers as well as to the other classes of the community. He has, also, set the powerful influence of the division of labour in the most striking point of view, and has illustrated it with a skill and felicity which even Smith has not surpassed, but by which he most probably profited."       La Hague & Rotterdam:: Arnoud et Reinier Leers, 1701., 1701. 3 vols. 4to. [xx] pp., A-LLLlll3, [LLLlll3-LLLlll4] ff.; [vi] pp., A-RRRrrr, [RRRrrr-RRRrrr2] ff.; [iv] pp., A-XXXxxx3, [XXXxxx3-XXXxxx4] ff. Vol. I frontispiece portrait of Furetiere engraved by "G.E." "CPR" (Cum Privilegio Regis), engraved title-page device and tail-piece all vols. Contemporary gilt-stamped calf, 6 raised bands; hinges cracked, extremities rubbed, binding still firm and attractive. Theological Institute of Connecticut blind-stamps to first and last few pages. SCARCE. Very good. Second edition, revised by Henri Basnage de Beauval, of Furetiere's controversial complete scientific and technological dictionary, that rewarded him with an unprecedented expulsion from the Academie Française. Volume I includes the preface to the first edition by philosopher Pierre Bayle. "It is, however, for his work as a lexicographer that Furetiere is known today, and his Dictionnaire universel des arts et des sciences (1690) remains an indispensable tool for scholars of seventeenth-century French literature and culture. Furetiere conceived of his work as a dictionary of things, rather than of words, and so presented a variety of technical, medical, and scientific terms within its pages. As such, the Dictionnaire universel served as a precursor to the encyclopedic dictionaries of the eighteenth century. "At the same time that Furetiere was preparing his dictionary, members of the Academie Française were compiling material for their own dictionary, a project begun in 1635. Sensing competition for its own project and judging him to be disloyal, the Académie accused Furetiere of using materials compiled by academiciens for their dictionary and, in 1685, revoked the royal privilege granting him permission to publish his Dictionnaire universel and expelled him from its ranks. In response, Furetiere wrote three factum in which he defended himself against the accusations of his former peers and claimed his dictionary to be more comprehensive in scope and more precise than the Dictionnaire de l'Academie Francaise, which appeared in 1694. The Dictionnaire universel was published posthumously in Rotterdam in 1690, with a preface by Pierre Bayle." - Baker, pp. 123-145. "When Furetiere planned his Dictionnaire Universel, he knew of both Moreri's work [Grand Dictionnaire Historique, Lyon: 1674] and the ongoing Dictionnaire undertaken by the Academie Francaise, which finally appeared in 1694. Furetiere rejected the arrangement of words by their etymological roots, omitted proper names, historical and geographical material, but included the arts and sciences, now in alphabetical format for the first time. In this sense...it was Furetiere, not Moreri, who did the most radical thing: namely, to establish alphabetical order as an acceptable way of conveying summaries of the arts and sciences, rather than just biographical and historical information" (Yeo, p. 18). "Bayle had another chance to comment on the dictionaries--in fact, the first dictionary of arts and sciences--when he wrote the anonymous preface to Furetiere's Dictionnaire Universel, which appeared in 1690, after the author's death in 1688. Bayle welcomed this as a work that went beyond a dictionary of language that merely gave equivalent words in two languages. Instead, Furetiere had set out to provide descriptions of things, principles, and theories concerning the arts and sciences. Here Bayle recognised the importance of agreed definitions of terms as a basis for communication.... Secondly, Bayle hinted that the established academies were not likely to perform this function. This was a reference to the dispute between Furetiere and the Academie Francaise, whose own dictionary had still not appeared. When Furetiere's plans surfaced, his work was regarded as a rival and he was expelled from the Academie. Bayle wrote the preface as a vindication of Furetiere's reputation as a lexicographer. In the absence of appropriate works from the Academie, it therefore fell to individuals such as himself and Furetiere to compile the kind of useful work that would act as 'the touchstone for all other books,' a guarantee of exchanges within the Republic of Letters." (Yeo, p. 45). "Basnage de Beauval is also known for his major revision of what has recently been called 'the first encyclopedic dictionary of the Age of Classicism,' the Dictionnaire universel.... By rewriting and also adding new material to each entry, Basnage de Beauval doubled the contents of the abbé Furetiere's Dictionnaire universel. His revised and enlarged edition included the preface written by Pierre Bayle for the original 1691 Hague-Rotterdam edition published by Arnout and Reinier Leers. Late in his life, Basnage de Beauval began a second revision of Furetiere's dictionary; but illness and death prevented him from going beyond the letter 'D.' Jacques Basnage chose Brutel de la Rivière to complete his brother's work, which was published as the 2nd rev. ed. [9th ed.], 4 vols. (The Hague, 1727)" (Cerny, p. 19).          El nuevo mundo poemma heroyco .con las alegorias de Don Pedro de Castro.Barcelona,Juan Pablo Marti for Francisco Barnola,

1701 - 4to (200 x 145mm.) [32], 476p. Contemporary vellum, slightly damp-stained at beginning, last leaf slightly discoloured and with a small marginal tear. First edition. This important epic (originally written in prose) is divided into ten books of well over 100 8-line stanzas called by the author 'mis octavas' with riming scheme abababcc, each book preceded by a short prose allegory. In some places there are breaks in the numeration and stanzas are left blank, as the author mentions in his preface. The work is dedicated to Philip V (1683-1746), the Bourbon King of Spain 1700-1746, and son of the grand Dauphin. Its hero is, of course, Columbus or Colón, as he is termed in Spanish.Botello in his account of conquest seems to have been influenced by the works of Francis Bacon and also by Gassendi (see Hillop.cit.) and he views Columbus as a type of 'experimenter' who puts his theories to the test. But he is not without religion as both Christ and the Virgin appear in his poem, and indeed in the preface to this work, Antonio Serra, who is licensing the book, writes of the contrast between the old world of vice and the new world which is 'una perfectissima republica llena de aciertos, y felicidades, dirigida con las leyes del màs soberano Licurgo', this last phrase being an allusion to the Spartan law-giver, and stresses Borello's commitment to catholicism. The author (1670-1747) was Portuguese in birth and of noble ancestry, but he spent long periods in Spain, particularly when younger in the circle of the Count of Melgar. He was the author of several works on Portuguese history and an important figure in the literature of the time. *** /// *** Copyright: Matthaeus Truppe - Stubenberggasse 7 - A-8010 Graz - +43 316 829552 *** /// *** Sprache: Deutsch Gewicht in Gramm: 800 Kl.-4°.
