Dal punto di vista letterario, si tratta di una raccolta di novelle un po' maliziose e licenziose scritte da diversi autori francesi e destinata ad allietare la corte di Philippe Le Bon. His publishing career began with an appendix to the third edition of the Pharmacopoeia Bateana (1700) of which he later published his own edition (1718). Based on his own collections of recipes were the very popular Pharmacopoeia extemporanea (1701) and Pharmacopoeia domestica (1723) which went through multiple editions both in England and abroad. LAIRESSE, Gerard de and Crispijn de PASSE.
[2], 24 pp.Second French edition of Lairesse's Grondlegginge ter teekenkonst, first published in Dutch at Amsterdam in 1701 (with further Dutch editions in 1713 and 1766). It uses the plates of the first French edition, published by David Mortier in Amsterdam in 1719. The text is divided into 12 lessons, all but one with an engraved instructional illustration in the text. The 120 plates follow at the end with model drawings progressing from body parts to full figures of men, women, children and skeletons, the nine muses by Hendrick Goltzius (the first dated 1592), religious scenes by Abraham Bloemaert, Crispijn van de Passe I and his sons and Willem Swanenburg, and finally a wide variety of animals. The first and present second French editions and the 1745 German edition add the important series of plates from Crispijn van de Passe's 1643 drawing book, 't Light der teken en schilder konst, the most ambitiously conceived and most complete of the Dutch and Flemish drawing books. From the library of the Genootschap Mathesis scientiarum genitrix, a scientific society established at Leiden in 1785. With a marginal tear in the last plate, not reaching the plate mark, but still in very good condition and untrimmed, with the deckles intact. The binding is worn and scuffed, with the front hinge cracked and the corners damaged. An important instructional work on the art of drawing.l Timmers, G. Lairesse, pp. 35-49, p. 81, no. 5; Bolten, introd. to the facsimile ed. (1973).

WENING, Michael.
Mumich: Johann Lucas Straub, 1701. Three sheets conjoined, total 265 x 1055mm. Resoration to folds, laid on archival paper. A magnificent prospect of Munich, drawn and engraved by Michael Wening (1645-1718), for the first volume his 'Landesbeschreibung', a four-volume description of Bavaria published 1701-26. The city is shown from the west, with an extensive key of important buildings. This plate was published the year that the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-14) started. The defensive walls shown here initially deterred the Duke of Marlborough from attacking the city, but his victory at the Battle of Blenheim (1704) broke the Bavarian army. The resulting Treaty of Ilbersheim allowed the Austrians to occupy Munich without a siege. Wening was Court Engraver to the Electorate of Bavaria, suffered during the Austrian occupation. He continued with the 'Landesbeschreibung', but the cost drove him into poverty. The last volumes was published by his heirs.

[ARNAULT DE NOBLEVILLE, Louis Daniel].
LVI, "473" [=471] pp.True fifth edition (or fourth edition of the revised edition) of a highly popular outline of medicine for laymen administering charitable medical assistance. Although designed so that anyone could quickly acquire the necessary medical knowledge, the author emphasized that the reader should always consult physicians: "It would be tempting God, violating the [natural] order, not to consult them, because it is ordinarily through them that diseases are cured" (pp. xiii-xiv). Unfortunately, a physician would probably prescribe the remedies listed in the book, which include "fried sow's genitals as a remedy against incontinence"; amulets or roots of certain dried plants "suspended between the shoulders and allowed to dry" against haemorrhoids; "the shirt of a menstruating woman worn as an emmenagogue; oil of earthworms for contusions; ... ivy gathered during a waning moon against atrophy; and pounded cockchafers against rabies". Against pleurisy, horse dung is recommended, or otherwise "a live pigeon split in half and applied to the patient for eighteen to twenty hours 'until the bad smell makes it necessary to remove it'" (Ramsey). The latter method was apparently much in vogue by Montpellier physicians (Weston).Louis Daniel Arnault de Nobleville (1701-1778) was a French physician and naturalist who devoted most of his career to the medical caring of the poor. Among his works are a multivolume study of the natural history of animals relating to the materia medica and a treatise on the singing of nightingales. With a 1777 owner's inscription on the fly-leaf. London: Jacob Tonson, 1701. Very Good. London: Jacob Tonson, 1701 and 1700, respectively. Combined Edition. Folio; Poems [xx] + 232pp; Fables [xxxx] + 566pp. Cambridge-style calf binding: raised spine bands, originally with gilt ornaments in each compartment; upper and lower panels are tooled with central concentric decorative rectangular frames and ornaments in blind at the four frame corners, per Cambridge-style convention. Panel edges tooled. Binding has undergone substantial, professional, cosmetically discreet recent repairs, and is now robust. Pastedowns show signs of previous, less discreet repairs having been removed. Nearly all gilding has been lost from spine ornaments and panel edges; micro-vestiges still detectable. Title page is now well preserved but shows its 300+ years. Textblock is moderately foxed throughout; pages robust. Twelve pages of laudatory poems solicited by politick Mr. Dryden-from the likes of William Congreve, Nathaniel Lee, and Joseph Addison, among others-precede his famous Preface to Absalom and Achitophel: "The true end of Satyr is the amendment of Vices by correction. [AMSTERDAM - PHARMACOPOEIA].
Pharmacopoea Amstelredamensis, in qua medicamenta, quae Amstelodami in usu sunt, artificiose praeparantur ut et eorum vires et doses.Leiden, Cornelis Boutesteyn, 1701. 12mo. With engraved frontispiece (repeated on the verso) by Hendrik Elandt after Coenraed Decker.Contemporary calf, ribbed, each board with a frame of gold double fillets, brown morocco spine label, red sprinkled edges. [8], 189, [19] pp. Rare ninth(?) edition in the original Latin of the Amsterdam pharmacopoeia, the official pharmacological recipe book issued by the Collegium Medicum of Amsterdam. Daems & Vandewiele notes only one copy, privately owned by D.A. Wittop Koning, and we have located only 3 copies beside the present one. Blaeu, who published the first edition in 1636, published what he called the fifth (1650) and sixth (1660), but in fact Janssonius copied Blaeus 1650 edition in 1651. The later Latin editions are unnumbered. Daems & Vandewiele tentatively date a Hendrik Wetstein edition between 1693 and 1701, but its frontispiece, by Coenraed Decker (1650-1685), a pupil of Romeyn de Hooghe, appears to have been engraved for that edition, suggesting a date between 1676 (Wetsteins earliest imprints) and ca. 1685. The present frontispiece, by Hendrik Elandt (who died in 1705) is clearly based on Deckers. Continuing Blaeus numbering, the present edition would therefore be the eighth, but in fact it is at least the ninth. With owner's inscription of T. West on the title-page. Front hinge weak, but still in good condition. Daems & Vandewiele, p. 48 (1 copy, in private hands); STCN (1 copy).

London: Printed and are to be Sold by J. Nutt, 1701. Octavo (190 x 119 mm). Disbound pamphlet, earlier sew-holes in margin. Initial and final leaves soiled, printer's error affecting text to p. 18. A very good copy. First edition of this anonymous response (signed L.L.D.J at end) to Charles Davenant's book of the same year, which had criticized the government and leading ecclesiastics. In a highly hostile tone, the author declares that Davenant's book "arraigns the ministry in a most outrageous manner; transgresses all the rules of modesty, abandons truth, and casts his blasphemous aspersions on that which all good men hold most sacred, the church" (p. 6). The author defends the ministry at a tumultuous time (with two elections in 1701, alternating Tory and Whig governments, and the ongoing war), especially its foreign policy, against Davenant's attacks. Small 4to (20 x 16 cm). With engraved frontispiece drawn and engraved by Joannes Lamsvelt and 16 plates engraved for this edition, at least mostly by Lamsvelt, after those of the first Dutch edition. Recased in contemporary(?) vellum, new endpapers. [16], "349" [= 345], [7] pp. incl. integral frontispiece. Rare second Dutch edition of an extensively illustrated account of an imaginary voyage based on the story of the VOC ship Vergulde Draeck that wrecked on the coast of western Australia on 28 April 1656. It was anonymously published by the French writer Denis Vairasse (ca. 1635-1700). Europeans still knew almost nothing about Australia when Vairasse first published his account and his wild stories caught the imagination of the public and went through many editions. They give a good picture of what was then known and/or surmised about these little-explored regions and may have generated more enthusiasm for voyages of exploration than the more sober factual accounts."In Vairasse's story, one of the boats sent out to seek help, returns with news of the discovery of a civilized country where its crew were imprisoned and then released by an armed force from Sporunde, a vassal state of the great kingdom called Sevarambia in the interior. The sporundeans, who speak Dutch and Spanish as a result of prior European encounter, take the crew to their city where they are welcomed in f … [Click Below for Full Description]

The shifts of Reynardine the son of Reynard the Fox, ...London, Thomas James for Edward Brewster and Thomas Passenger, 1684. 3 parts in 1 volume. 4to.With woodcut of King Lion's court on title-page, 61 woodcuts in text of part 1 (including 23 repeats), 15 woodcuts in part 2, all repeated from part 1. Late 18th-century calf. [160]; [112]; [4], 160 pp. One of the rare sets of all 3 parts of the English Reynard the Fox, the third part here in its first edition. The Reynard stories were already established as a coherent collection in the 12th century and were first printed in 1479, in a Dutch prose edition. They became especially well known when translated into English (and adapted) for Caxton's 1481 edition (in 43 chapters). The publisher Edward Alde in London began work on an extensive revision of Caxton's text, with many new additions, but he published only the first part, probably in 1620 (the first edition of the present part 1), containing 25 chapters, some corresponding with chapters in Caxton's edition and some not. Although the second part would have to wait 52 years, the first part quickly became the standard English version of the Reynard the Fox stories, with 8 editions from 1620 to 1671. Its language was modernized, giving both a view of the stories as they were known thro … [Click Below for Full Description]

Etched double-page title-page by Romeyn de Hooghe, dated "1701", and 32 engraved double-page maps (numbered I- VI, A-F and 1-9) engraved by Jan Stemmers and etched by Jan and Caspar Luyken after drawings by A. Steyaart, all in beautiful contemporary colouring. Contemporary red half sheepskin. First and only edition of a splendid atlas in full contemporary colour. In 1695, the "Land van Voorne" commissioned the surveyor Heyman van Dijck to map the territory of Voorne (South Holland). Romeyn de Hooghe was requested to decorate the maps, but would eventually only execute the title-page, a typical example of his rich allegorical imagery, decorated with the coats of arms of the administrators of Voorne, with the arms of the "Opperdijkgraaf", Jacob Frederik baron van Beyeren van Schagen, prominently placed in the centre. Jan and Caspar Luyken adorned the highly detailed maps with the coat of arms of the region depicted, often against the background of a rustic scene. The Land van Voorne was a historical region (in South Holland, today part of the islands Voorne-Putten and Goeree-Overfklakkee. It was divided into Oost- and West-Voorne and (part of) "Over Flacquee". The atlas follows this division and includes three sections, each preceded by a general map followed by detail maps of the several administrative units, including Rockanje, Nieuwenhoorn, Hellevoetsluis, Goedereede, Dirksland and Melissant.A fe … [Click Below for Full Description]
