Flavius Joseph
France: Jonathan Cape. Rare Book Office de la Semaine Sante 1701 Royal Binding Duke of Orleans About the Book Rare book, Office de la Semaine Sante published by in 1701 by Antoine Dezallier with excellent provenance. The book bears the coat of arms of Phillipe I Duke of Orleans (1661 to 9th June 1701), the younger brother of Louis the IV of France, the "Sun King", and founder of the house of Orleans. As you would expect for a book used by royalty the binding is exceptional. The front and back covers have the gilded coat of arms of the Duke of Orleans surrounded by delicate gilding imitating lace work. The spine has six sections one with abridged title and the rest which appears to be the monogram of Phillipe I Duke of Orleans. Interestingly the book was published and bound a few months before his death with holy week being in March of 1701 and he died on the 9th of June 1701. The book is written in French and Latin and is a prayer book that outlines the services of the catholic holy week. The title page has the following text: "Office de la Semaine Sainte Latin et Francois a l'usage de Rome et de Paris avec lexplication des Ceremonies de l'Eglise & la quelques Prieres tirees de l'Ecriture, pour la Confession & la Communion & sur les mysteres que l'on celebre durrant ce faint temps. Nouvelle Edition A Paris Chez Antoine Dezallier, rue saint Jacques a la Conronne d'or. MDCCI.
"The map represents a part of northern Italy: precisely, the territories of the states of Milan, Venice, Genoa, Parma, Mantua, Modena and Ferrara. The mountains are rendered pictorially and the borders between the states are underlined by the use of different colors. This map was probably engraved around 1701. From the numerous inscriptions on paper it is possible to suppose that it constituted part of the work ""Atlas minor sive geographia compendia qua orbis terrarum for paucas attamen novissimas tabulas ostenditur … [Click Below for Full Description]

Johann Hoffmann (1629 - 1698)

Daniel Tauvry
Printed for D. Midwinter, and Tho. Leigh, at the Rose and Crown, 1701. Full Leather. First English Edition. First English Edition of Daniel Tauvry's New Rational Anatomy, translated from the third French edition. Tauvry was a Member of the College of Physicians at Paris, until his death in 1701. Complete with frontispiece and 21 additional numbered plates. [8], 144, 161-301, [9] pp. Leaves K7 and K8 appear to be stubbed in cancels, with rather incorrect pagination. Despite the jump in pagination between pp. 144 and 161 (K8v and L1r), the beginning of Part 2, the text appears complete. Dampstaining and rippling to the text. Plate 18 has a 7 cm closed tear extending from the bottom edge. Japanese tissue repair to the joints, near the head of the spine. Hinges cracked but holding well. Beginning of separation at the bottom of the joints. Front board bowed at the edges. Full calf, overly mottled in the center panels of the boards, with blindstamped decorations reminiscent of a Cambridge binding. Titling in ink on the spine, now faded. (ESTC T153620). Good binding. John Pearson, Bishop of Chester - Sir Isaac Newton
London: B Sam. Keble, 1701 Book. Very Good. Full-Leather. [12] pp 398 Sir Isaac Newton's copy of 'Pearson On the Creed' with the Musgrave bookplate and a single Newtonian dog-ear pointing to the word 'eternity'. Small folio in a Cambridge binding of panelled calf, blind edge-roll; six spine compartments, lacking the morocco spine label but with 'Pearson on the Creed' written where the label would have been. The binding is sound but starting at the top and tail of the upper hinge, there is rubbing to the edges and extremities of the book. The text block has faded red speckled edges. James Musgrave's engraved 'Philosophemur' bookplate (9.5x10.5cm) appears on the front paste-down with Musgrave's shelf-mark 'B2-19' written at the top left-hand corner and the second Musgrave shelf-mark from Barnsley Park written at the bottom of the bookplate: 'Case R. B.9 Barnsley'. Opposite the paste-down the front free end-paper has been neatly and quite deliberately scissored out a considerable time ago, in all likelihood to sell a Newtonian ownership signature or annotation which was written on that leaf. There is a single large Newtonian dog-ear close to the end of the text which folds up the corner at the tail of the leaf, pointing to 'eternity' in the sentence: 'But as the fire is termed eternal, so that eternity is described as absolute, excluding all limits, prescinding from all determinations' - a passage dealing with the 'eternity of that fire prepared for the Devil and his Angels...' The text is otherwise unmarked barring a pencil annotation to the title page 'Best edition published … [Click Below for Full Description]
