Lexicon graeco-latinum in Novum Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Testamentum : nominum tam propriorum quam appellativorum significatus atque analysin complexum. Editio correctior

Jo. Fried. Gleditschi, Lipsiae (Leipzig) 1702 - 12mo (7 1/4 x 5"). [28], 1752 columns (876pp), [400]pp. Contemporary full vellum with handwritten title to spine. Title page in red and black lettering. Decorative head-, tailpieces and initials. Originally published in Herborn in 1619, Georg Pasor's koine Greek* and Latin dictionary of the New Testament is, according to Adolf Deissmann in his "Light from the Ancient East" (1927), "the first lexicon to the New Testament."However, Deissman's claim has recently come under some criticism by John Lee, who shows (in his "History of New Testament Lexicography" (2003) that Pasor's work relies heavily on the work of his predecessors (especially Stephanus). Pasor does, however, seem to be the first NT lexicographer to divide his entries into senses, and his work dominated the field of NT lexicography throughout the 17th century. (For more information, see: J. William Johnston's "The Use of PAS in the New Testament" (2004)).Binding age-toned, partly darkened and soiled. Ex-library bookplate on inside of front cover. Title page detached but present. Contemporary previous owner's inscription dated 1713 at lower margin of title page (not affecting lettering). Minor and sporadic foxing throughout. Text in Latin and Greek. Binding in overall good-, interior in good to very good condition. About the author: Georg Pasor (1570-1637) was a philologist and private teacher, who later became professor of Greek and Hebrew at the university of Herborn, and in 1626, professor of Greek at the university of Franeker. * Before Alexander the Great, the Greek language was an assortment of localized dialects. Alexander wanted a Greek language common to all peoples. It was called 'koine' or common. By the time the New Testament was written (mid to late 1st century A.D.) koine Greek had become the common language in Israel. Koine Greek became more popular in Rome than Latin. One reason was Rome's acceptance of all cult religions as long as the Emperor was worshipped as well. One of the titles of the Emperor was the koine word, "kurios," which means "Lord." It was a divine title of the emperor! It was the main word used by the LXX (Septuagint) translators of the Old Testament when they translated the Hebrew word YHVH. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Brunet II, 699. Tagli a spruzzo. Testatine, capilettera elegantemente decorati a racemi e fregi tipografici n.t. ornati in xilografia. Testo in latino in carattere tondo e in francese in carattere corsivo. Lozzi, II, 4914, note. Fondo Olschki, 733.

Paris: Guillaume DeLisle, Quai de l'Horloge a l'Aigle d'Or . 1702 - Copper engraving. Original outline colour. Size: 61.5 x 47 cm. (24 x 18½ inches) Very good condition; both bottom margins have marks slightly affecting the image. Guilliame Delisle (1675-1726) is important as the first "scientific" cartographer who incorporated the most current information on exploration and topography into his maps. He adopted entirely new principles in cartography and set about making a thorough reform in that subject. Delisle recognized that the new methods of measuring by scale and of marking the places were very valuable for cartography; with this help he therefore produced a new and more accurate picture of the world. This beautiful map of the British Isles is extending west to east from Kerry to Oldenbourg and north to south from The Shetland Islands to Normandy, coloured by region. Fantastic title cartouche at top left, decorated with fish, birds, horses, fishing nets, with Neptune above and water below, secondary cartouche with five scales at lower right.

Some memorandums of matters of fact, relating to the original and preliminaries of a suit in Doctors-Commons, between Sir Hugh Everard baronet, promoter, and John Oswald, vicar of Much-Waltham in Essex, which are prov'd either from the depositions of witnesses, or from authentical papers exhibited in this cause, the copies whereof are here produc'd . With some reflections upon them, wherein are some things of publick and general concern to the clergy of England, which are with all humility submitted to the consideration of the Convocation now assembled. By J.O.

London printed in the year MDCCII 1702 - 4to., (2) + 55 + (1)pp., lower margin of title rather soiled, contemporary ink signature of 'Dr Jane'> in upper margin, bound in 19th century quarter calf over marbled card covers. A good copy. First edition: rare. ESTC & OCLC together find copies outside Great Britain only at Yale Law + UCLA (William Andrews Clark). Lambeth Palace has, uniquely, a 2nd ed. of 1709. A fascinating case of an evident serious breakdown in relations between a country clergyman and both his patron and his parishioners. Sir Hugh Everard (ca. 1654-1706), 3rd Baronet of Much Waltham in the County of Essex seems - according to the Rev. John Oswald's perhaps partial account - to have wanted to get rid of Oswald from the living. Everard charges Oswald with a menu of serious malpractices which he considers provided sufficient evidence for the Vicar to be ejected from the parish. Among the allegations reference is made to the refusal of administering the Holy Sacrament to about 80 parishioners, and financial bullying (demanding unpaid tithes including those owed by Sir Hugh Everard himself). Oswald notes that on one occasion the vicarage itself was attacked at night by 'confederates' of those who wanted the vicar driven out. When all this failed, Oswald alleges that he was then subjected to a blizzard of unsubstantiated accusations, all untrue. 'That the said petition proving ineffectual to get their ends of J. Oswald, and turn him out of his living, they proceeded farther to draw up articles against him, charging him with the crimes of adultery, fornication, (tho' neither of these is deposed by any of the witnesses), incontinency, drunkenness, and several neglects of his ministerial office, as vicar of the parish of Much-Waltham'. The case eventually went to the Court of Arches, the costs of £40 being paid by a general meeting of parishioners. Oswald's defence rested in part on the legal rights of the clergy - which he argued he had properly relied on - and the improper levying of legal costs on to parishioners. But he also adds the human plea that it was grossly unfair for him to be the subject of a 'narrow and diligent search into the privacies of his life for the space of fourteen or fifteen years past'. It was, Oswald declared, 'contrary to the common interest of humane society, that such rigid enquiries should be made into men's lives, especially into clergymen's whereby their reputation is expos'd to all the slanderous reports of ill-minded and indigent persons'.

1702 - The most famous Romancero and chivalry tale of Medieval Spain. 1702. Cadiz. Pedro Ortiz. 12mo (138 mm x 65 mm). 1 ff. +142 ff. + 2 ff. Early 20th century red jansenist-style red morocco, faux head bands, spine lettered in gilt. Very good condition overall. 2,600 $ A very handsome example, and a rare survival of this popular printing, narrating in Romance the deeds of Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar (c.1040 – 1099), better known as El Cid, a military leader during the Reconquista –the Spanish effort to push the Moors out of occupied Spain- in medieval Spain, whose efforts gained him the title “Cid” by the Moors, and “Campeador” by the Spaniards. He became immortalized by history as the undisputed hero of Castille, and in literature by the poem Cantar del Mio Cid and the Romancero. This Romancero, not to be confused with the historical chronic, was first issued in 1612 by Gracian, a previous edition (1610) is thought to exist, however no copy is known. All 17th century editions are tremendously rare, early 18th century are very rare as well. Palau 81035. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

An Act to Oblige the Jews to Maintain and Provide for Their Protestant Children [1 Anne, st. I, c. 30]

Charles Bill, Executrix of Thomas Newcomb, London 1702 - 453-454 pp. 4to. "To the end that sufficient maintenance be provided and allowed for the children of Jewish parents, who shall turn Protestants ?" The law was enacted in response to the case of Jacob de Mendez Berta, who refused to support his 18-year-old daughter Mary after her conversion. The testimony of Mary and her Protestant supporters is recorded in the Journals of the House of Commons, after which it was resolved that a bill (i.e. the present Act) be written to address her case. The law remained in effect until the middle of the 19th century, though it was enacted expressly for Mary de Mendez Berta's benefit and does not seem to have been enforced thereafter. In bound collection of Acts from the reigns of William III (years 13 & 14) and Queen Anne (years 1-5). Contemporary blind-stamped paneled calf, manuscript spine label

First edition. Marban's is a very rare and singularly important vocabulary of the Moxos language, the first of its kind and the only one for almost two centuries. The catechism, present herein, is usually lacking. The Arte is notable both as an important linguistic piece and an early South American imprint. "The language of the nation of the province of 'los Moxos,' in Bolivia, South America. Their language is related to the Maipure. This is the only work on the subject" (Sabin). "Hasta hace poco este era el unico libro impreso referente a la lengua de los Moxos" (Medina). The book is undated, Sabin records the date as 1701, while Medina believes it to be 1702; quite possibly, Medina is more accurate. A manuscript note on the front free endpaper of the present copy indicates it was purchased by the noted London firm, Bernard Quaritch, Ltd., in 1918, while a stamp on the front pastedown gives evidence it was later sold by the American Antiquarian Society. "Como hermano en la Compañía llego a Sevilla en 1671 desde el Colegio de esa ciudad, a fin de embarcarse para Indias en la misión que conducía a Chile el P. Lorenzo Arizabalo. Destinosele luego de su llegada al Colegio de S. Pablo de Lima, mas tarde a las misiones de Juli, y últimamente a la de los Mojos" (Medina). Palau, 150837 & 150838 (giving them as separate works). (Dutch Luther Bible containing the Old and New Testament and the Apocrypha. This edition is translated from the German by Nicolaes Biestkens and is revised by Adolf Visscher. Adolf Visscher revised the Mennonite translation of Biestkens and his translation became the standard Bible for the Dutch Lutherans. The Bible is interleaved with the work of Romeyn de Hooghe which contains a frontispiece with explanation, a titlepage, 5 maps and 69 folia, each with 2 engravings and marginal notes. This set of Bible illustrations was bound in a number of different translations and editions of the Bible during this period. The total work contains 3 frontispieces, a portrait, 5 maps and 138 engravings with ca. 800 illustrations on them. All of the frontispieces, maps, engravings, vignettes and capital letters are beautifully handcoloured and heightened with gold by the uncrowned master of the late 17th century Dutch colourists, Dirk Jansz. van Santen. Van Santen was an unsurpassed artist and made beautiful pieces of art out of numerous book illustrations. Typical for his colouring is the abundant use of gold and the use of vivid colours for both the borders and the engravings and maps itself. On the 11th of February 1982, prof. H. de la Fontaine Verwey, who thoroughly explored Van Santen’s oeuvre, inspected this Bible, and certified that the colouring is undoubtedly by the hand of Van Santen. The work has not been for sale before. For generations it has been the property of a private family in Haarlem and the last 30 years it has been in the hands of a private collector. An exceptionally beautiful copy. What makes it even more exclusive is the fact that the engravings by De Hooghe, although very appreciated, were almost never coloured. This was due to the numerous details and the almost impressionistic design of his engravings which made it almost impossible for the colourists to colour the prints without creating chaos. However, Van Santen was able to give even the prints by De Hooghe extra quality and the splendid colouring proves his unmistakable expertise.) 2 werken in 1 band, Bijbel: (titelprent, 2, portret, 15) 278, 112, 70, (titelprent met verklaring) 132 folia.         A Short View of the Chronology of the Old Testement, and of the Harmony of the Four Evangelists

Cambridge: University Press, 1702. Book. Very Good. Leather. 1st Edition. William Whiston was an English theologian, historian, and mathematician, a leading figure in the popularisation of the ideas of Isaac Newton. He is now probably best known for helping to instigate the Longitude Act in 1714 (and his attempts to win the rewards that it promised) and his important translations of the Antiquities of the Jews and other works by Josephus (which are still in print). He was a prominent exponent of Arianism and wrote A New Theory of the Earth. Whiston succeeded his mentor Newton as Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the University of Cambridge, and after having lost the position over his "Primitive Christian" theological views, he spent the rest of his life as a lecturer and writer. .

Leviathan, or, The Matter, Form, and Power of a Common-Wealth Ecclesiastical and Civil.

London: for Andrew Crooke, 1651 [but actually c.1695-1702?] - Folio in fours (325 x 199 mm). Contemporary mottled calf at some time neatly rebacked with the original decorative gilt spine laid down, early 19th century green morocco label, red speckled edges. Armorial bookplate (on verso of letterpress title) of Sir Simon Harcourt, first Viscount Harcourt (1661?-1727), lawyer and politician, solicitor-general under Queen Anne; early 19th century armorial bookplate of Harcourt on front pastedown, possibly that of Field Marshal William Harcourt, 3rd Earl Harcourt (1743-1830). Front joint partially split but sound, head of spine chipped, small wormhole through blank lower margin of first two gatherings, scattered foxing, one or two gatherings browned, a good wide-margined copy. Engraved allegorical title page, folding letterpress table. First edition, third state, of one of the most famous books of the 17th century: "This book produced 'a fermentation in English thought not surpassed until the advent of Darwinism'" (Pforzheimer quoting DNB). This is the so-called "Ornaments" issue. "The true first edition of the English Leviathan is the so-called 'Head' edition (the name of this and the other early editions is taken from the printer's devices which appear on the title page), published in April or May 1651. Although three editions bear the date 1651, it seems that only one edition was actually published in that year. [Noel Malcolm] argues that the 'Ornaments' [edition] dates from 1695-1702 on the basis of publishing data" (Glen Newey, The Routledge Guidebook to Hobbes' Leviathan, 2014, p. 41). In fact, Noel Malcolm, in his expansive and authoritative Oxford edition of Leviathan (2014) states that "it must be emphasised that O [the 'Ornaments' edition] is not an inferior edition, and neither is it even an edition of the same sort and rank as other editions. Rather, it constitutes Hobbes's Ausgabe letzer Hand [definitive edition] and is as such undoubtedly superior to both H ['Head' ornament issue] and B ['Bear' ornament issue]. In other words, O deserves the most serious attention and consideration in all respects". Kress 381; Pforzheimer 492; Printing and the Mind of Man 138; Wing H2248. [Attributes: First Edition]
