(Kyd does not seem to have been aware of these earlier books.) The anonymous author mentions Sheppard's book but dismisses it, claiming that it "extends not to the fortieth part of the matters relating to Corporations (v). He is correct; his book is much more extensive than Sheppard's and is more an analytical treatise than a handbook. This was clearly the author's ambition: "I have not only shewed the nature of Corporations, and by what words ere

        Lycophronis Chalcidensis Alexandra, obscurum poema. .

      Oxford: E Theatro Shedoniano , 1702. Second edition. Buckram. Very Good/The Greek poets of the Hellenistic period (following the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BCE and lasting three hundred years until the establishment of the Roman Empire) have a reputation for indulging in an ornate and sometimes opaque style that we would later associate with Mannerist poets like Gongora or Marino. Lycophron's Alexandra (or Cassandra) may be the epitome of that style. Even Alexandrian scholars of the time referred to it as "the obscure poem." Wikipedia quotes a modern critic who says the Alexandra "may be the most illegible piece of classical literature, one which nobody can read without a proper commentary and which even then makes very difficult reading." That must be why in the opening line the poet says, "I will spell out everything clearly, whatever you ask, from the very beginning."The Wiki article continues, "The poem is evidently intended to display the writer's knowledge of obscure names and uncommon myths; it is full of unusual words of doubtful meaning gathered from the older poets, and long-winded compounds coined by the author. ... It was very popular, and was read and commented on very frequently. Two explanatory paraphrases of the poem survive, and the collection of scholia by Isaac and John Tzetzes is very valuable." The Oxford edition by John Potter (later Archbishop of Canterbury) offered here includes the Tzetzes scholia, as well as an exuberant Latin version of the poem by Joseph Scaliger (first published in 1566, when Scaliger was 25 years old) and notes by Scaliger's friend Willem Canter.Potter first published the text in 1697, but only this second edition bears his dedicatory epistle to the German classical scholar (who taught at Utrecht) Johann Georg Graevius.. Folio (32 cm); [16], 183, [1], [28], [6], 174, [18] pages, and full-page engraved frontispiece by Michael Burghers of a laurel-crowned Cassandra, standing before the walls of Troy in flames. Greek and Latin in parallel columns. Collation includes title page in Greek (with engraved vignette of the Sheldonian Theatre) and a second title page in Latin (with vignette of Oxford University's crest). Advertisement leaf at end.Bound in modern library buckram. Pages somewhat toned at edges, but text block is sturdy and without significant blemish. References: ESTC T107442;

        Broadside. Begins: "Petition for the Laird of Kilravock and others the vassals of Lovat....

      [Edinburgh Folio. [1] p.. ca. 1702] The tenants of the Lovat estate petition for a delay in producing the writs and securities of their holdings, as the protracted dispute between the Lovat family and the infamous Capt. Simon Fraser of Beaufort (who attempted a forced marriage to the family's heiress, young Amelia Fraser, before successfully kidnapping and wedding her mother, the dowager Lady Amelia Murray) has left them in a sorry state regarding the payment of creditors. Not only does this broadside touch on the common perspective of a great contemporary scandal, but it is of interest for its scarcity as well. => No holdings are listed by WorldCat, ESTC, or NUC Pre-1956. Excellent clean condition, with two small sewing holes at inner margin, one very small spot of foxing, and ink traces from printing process to outer edge. Tipped onto a leaf of 19th-century paper.

        El sol increado dios trino y uno, y la grande excelencia de su culto y devocion.

      Originally published in 1702 and here in its first Mexican edition, this work on God and the Trinity is from the pen of a Capuchin from Seville -- hence his religious name. He served as a missionary in Andalucia and, despite assertions by one university cataloguer that are copied by several others, he never was a missionary in Mexico.The volume ends with a "Corona Florida a la Santisima Trinidad," being a small literary collection of coplas, canciones, and a romance "en Metafora del Sol, que discurre por los doce signos del Zodiaco." Binding: Publisher's mottled sheep, gilt spine extra. Marbled endpapers; all edges red.

De Hooghe: (frontispiece with explanation, 1) 69 folia. Contemporary blind-stamped Leather with 6 raised bands, 8 corner-pieces and 2 clasps, Folio H. 47,5 x L. 32 x W. 12 cm. (Dutch Luther Bible containing the Old and New Testament and the Apocrypha. This edition is translated from the German by Nicolaes Biestkens and is revised by Adolf Visscher. Adolf Visscher revised the Mennonite translation of Biestkens and his translation became the standard Bible for the Dutch Lutherans. The Bible is interleaved with the work of Romeyn de Hooghe which contains a frontispiece with explanation, a titlepage, 5 maps and 69 folia, each with 2 engravings and marginal notes. This set of Bible illustrations was bound in a number of different translations and editions of the Bible during this period. The total work contains 3 frontispieces, a portrait, 5 maps and 138 engravings with ca. 800 illustrations on them. All of the frontispieces, maps, engravings, vignettes and capital letters are beautifully handcoloured and heightened with gold by the uncrowned master of the late 17th century Dutch colourists, Dirk Jansz. van Santen. Van Santen was an unsurpassed artist and made beautiful pieces of art out of numerous book illustrations. Typical for his colouring is the abundant use of gold and the use of vivid colours for both the borders and the engravings and maps itself. On the 11th of February 1982, prof. H. de la Fontaine Verwey, who thoroughly explored Van Santen’s oeuvre, inspected this Bible, and certified that the colouring is undoubtedly by the hand of Van Santen. The work has not been for sale before. For generations it has been the property of a private family in Haarlem and the last 30 years it has been in the hands of a private collector. An exceptionally beautiful copy. What makes it even more exclusive is the fact that the engravings by De Hooghe, although very appreciated, were almost never coloured. This was due to the numerous details and the almost impressionistic design of his engravings which made it almost impossible for the colourists to colour the prints without creating chaos. However, Van Santen was able to give even the prints by De Hooghe extra quality and the splendid colouring proves his unmistakable expertise.) 2 werken in 1 band, Bijbel: (titelprent, 2, portret, 15) 278, 112, 70, (titelprent met verklaring) 132 folia.

[8] ff., 664, 142, [22], 163–202 pp., 1 f.. [1702] The first printed grammar, dictionary, and catechism in the language of the Moxo Indians of the lowlands of south-central Beni, a region of Bolivia. The language is a member of the Arawakan family. Marbán (1647–1713), a native of Spain, was admitted to Society of Jesus in 1663 and sent to Peru in 1675, there to spend rest of his life among the Moxo Indians of Upper Peru (now Bolivia). 1701 is often given as the date of publication of this work, but since the last license to print is dated the middle of December, 1701, and the caption title of the "Cartilla, y doctrina cristina" is 1702, a publication date of 1701 is impossible. The notably variable and uneven printing here, sometimes very light and sometimes very dark, is typical of Peruvian printing's low-grade state in this era. Representing perhaps a particularly bad day, a compositor who had missed a phrase on p. 83 => inserted it in tiny type along the outer margin! 19th- or early 20th-century high quality Spanish acid-stained sheep, round spine with gilt tooling and a red leather spine label, a little rubbed. Private ownership stamp on verso of title, this showing through on recto; two instances of old light marginal waterstaining to a few leaves each and one leaf with a short marginal tear without loss. A copy completely unfoxed, clean and even crisp.

        Insularum Danicarum ut Zee-Landiae, Fioniae Langelandiae, Lalandiae Falstriae, Fembriae, Monae aliarumque in Mari Balthico Sitar

      Paris: Pierre Mortier. unbound. Map. Copper plate engraving with original hand color. Image measures 19 1/4" x 23". c.1702 This highly decorative map notes Denmark's main islands include Zealand, Funen or Fyn and Lolland as well as the eastern coast of Jutland. Beautifully detailed, it notes cities, towns, villages, fortresses, and incredibly rendered topography. Coastal features including shoals and banks are also noted. A charming title cartouche features merfolk holding up the royal coat of arms and frolicking in the water. This map, originally created by De Wit, was issued by Pierre Mortier in circa 1702. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the centerfold. Lower margin near centerfold shows minor water stains, not affecting printed image. Minor foxing at places.<br><br>Frederick de Wit (1629/30--1706) was one of the foremost cartographers and map sellers of the Dutch Golden Age. Based in Amsterdam, he began with a small printing shop in 1654 and soon became internationally known for his city plans and wall maps of the world. By 1671, he was producing large folio atlases for both his shop and individual patrons that could contain anywhere between 15 and 150 maps. Today, these atlases grace the collections of many museums and institutions as evidence of the vibrant cartographic trade in Amsterdam in the middle- and late-17th century.<br><br>Pierre Mortier (1661-1711) was a Dutch cartographer, engraver, and printseller who worked in Amsterdam. He used advanced Dutch printing methods to produce high quality editions of contemporary French maps by cartographers such as De L'Isle, Sanson, Jaillot, de Fer and De Wit. His greatest feat was the nautical atlas "Le Neptune Francois." This map is a resplendent example of his work.

        Het Beloofde Landt Canaan door wandelt van onsen Salichmaecker Iesu Christo nessens syne Apostelen.

      Dordrecht, Netherlands: Pieter en Jacob Keur, 1702. unbound. Map. Hand colored engraving. Image measures 12" x 18". This stunning map of Canaan or Israel and Palestine depicts the Holy Land during the time of Jesus Christ. The map is oriented with north to the northeast and extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River. Tiny ships mark marks the route of Apostle Paul ending in Rome, where he was beheaded. The ruins of the cities of Sodom, Gammora, Seboim and Adama are featured in the Dead Sea. Perhaps the most exceptional part of this map are the illustrations along the bottom margin, each telling a biblical story and depicting scenes from the life of Jesus. The illustrations on the left depict the scenes of Christ's birth while the scenes on the right are from the crucifixion. The illustration in the center features the rising of Christ.<br><br>This map is based on an earlier map by Nicolaes Visscher. Published by the Keur family in the circa 1702 edition of the Keur Bible. Dutch text on verso. Map is in good condition with some wear along the folds. Some spotting at places. Some chipping and edge wear. Daniel Stoopendaal was a Dutch mapmaker and engraver in the early 17th century. He is famous for re-engraving the Holy Land maps of Nicolaes Visscher and for his landscape prints. This is a beautiful example of this work.

        Magnalia Christi Americana: or, the Ecclesiastical History of New-England, from its first planting in the year 1620. unto the year of our lord, 1698. In seven books...

      London: printed for Thomas Parkhurst, 1702. Folio. (12 1/4 x 7 7/8 inches). Double-page engraved map of New England and New York. Without errata leaves as usual. Expertly bound to style in 18th-century speckled calf, spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands, maroon morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, the others with overall repeat decoration in gilt A first edition of the greatest history of New England: a landmark in colonial New England history, The first edition of what Howes calls the "most famous 18th century American book" and one which Streeter describes as, who describes as "the most famous American book of colonial times." Mather's opus is rightly considered an indispensable source for the history of New England in the 17th century, both for its biographies and its history of civil, religious, and military affairs. The seven books include 1) the history and settlement of New England; 2) the lives of its governors and magistrates; 3) biographies of "Sixty Famous Divines"; 4) a history and roll of Harvard College; 5) a history of the Congregational Church in New England; 6) a record of the remarkable providences revealing God's direct influence in particular events in the colonies; and 7) the "War of the Lord" dealing with the devil, the Separatists, Familists, Antinomians, Quakers, clerical imposters and the Indians. Much of the book's value rests in its incomparable wealth of detail regarding daily life in early colonial New England. David Hall has referred to it as "a mirror of the 1690's," the decade in which most of it was written. Far from being a dull chronicle of events, the Magnalia is full of lively biographical pieces, vivid descriptions of the times, and many surprising sidelights. It has been mined by all modern scholars of social history for its unsurpassed view of New England at the end of the 17th century. The map, known as the "Mather map" is actually titled An Exact Mapp of New England and New York . The first eighteenth-century general map of New England, it depicts an area from Casco Bay, west to the Hudson then south to Manhattan and north west past Long Island to Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod, before heading north again past Boston to Casco Bay. The information concerning the early roads is particularly valuable, and the early versions of the spelling of the towns and rivers cast a fascinating light on the early topographic nomenclature of colonial America. Marbán (1647?-1713), a native of Spain, was admitted to Society of Jesus in 1663 and sent to Peru in 1675, there to spend rest of his life among the Moxo Indians of Upper Peru (now Bolivia).

        General Ecclesiastical History

      1702 - ECHARD, Laurence. A General Ecclesiastical History from the Nativity of Our Blessed Saviour to the First Establishment of Christianity by Humane Laws, under the Emperour Constantine the Great. London: by W. Bowyer, for Jacob Tonson, 1702. Tall folio (10 by 16 inches), contemporary full red morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine and covers in the Cottage style, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $2850.First edition of Echardâ&#128;&#153;s history of the early days of the Christian church, with finely engraved frontispiece by Van der Gucht and double-page engraved map of the Holy Land. This copy splendidly bound in an elaborately gilt-decorated Restoration binding.â&#128;&#156;A work valuable in many respectsâ&#128;¦ the best of its kindâ&#128;&#157; (Lowndes, 711). â&#128;&#156;Having been ordained by Moore, bishop of Norwich, Echard was presented to the livings of Welton and Elkington, Lincolnshire, and was appointed chaplain to the Bishop of Lincoln. For more than twenty years he resided in Lincolnshire, chiefly at Louth, where during that time he wrote a number of worksâ&#128;&#157; (DNB). This later Restoration-era binding was skillfully accomplished in the style of Roger Bartlett, a renowned London bookbinder active until 1695 or so, using several tulip, flower, leaf and roll tools likely from his workshop. Faint marginal dampstain to lower corner of text, otherwise interior very clean, with wide margins. Expert restoration to spine ends and corners only; binding remarkably well preserved, gilt very bright. A splendid volume. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
