Insularum Danicarum ut Zee-Landiae, Fioniae Langelandiae, Lalandiae Falstriae, Fembriae, Monae aliarumque in Mari Balthico Sitar

Paris: Pierre Mortier. unbound. Map. Copper plate engraving with original hand color. Image measures 19 1/4" x 23". c.1702 This highly decorative map notes Denmark's main islands include Zealand, Funen or Fyn and Lolland as well as the eastern coast of Jutland. Beautifully detailed, it notes cities, towns, villages, fortresses, and incredibly rendered topography. Coastal features including shoals and banks are also noted. A charming title cartouche features merfolk holding up the royal coat of arms and frolicking in the water. This map, originally created by De Wit, was issued by Pierre Mortier in circa 1702. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the centerfold. Lower margin near centerfold shows minor water stains, not affecting printed image. Minor foxing at places.<br><br>Frederick de Wit (1629/30--1706) was one of the foremost cartographers and map sellers of the Dutch Golden Age. Based in Amsterdam, he began with a small printing shop in 1654 and soon became internationally known for his city plans and wall maps of the world. By 1671, he was producing large folio atlases for both his shop and individual patrons that could contain anywhere between 15 and 150 maps. Today, these atlases grace the collections of many museums and institutions as evidence of the vibrant cartographic trade in Amsterdam in the middle- and late-17th century.<br><br>Pierre Mortier (1661-1711) was a Dutch cartographer, engraver, and printseller who worked in Amsterdam. He used advanced Dutch printing methods to produce high quality editions of contemporary French maps by cartographers such as De L'Isle, Sanson, Jaillot, de Fer and De Wit. His greatest feat was the nautical atlas "Le Neptune Francois." This map is a resplendent example of his work.

Het Beloofde Landt Canaan door wandelt van onsen Salichmaecker Iesu Christo nessens syne Apostelen.

Dordrecht, Netherlands: Pieter en Jacob Keur, 1702. unbound. Map. Hand colored engraving. Image measures 12" x 18". This stunning map of Canaan or Israel and Palestine depicts the Holy Land during the time of Jesus Christ. The map is oriented with north to the northeast and extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River. Tiny ships mark marks the route of Apostle Paul ending in Rome, where he was beheaded. The ruins of the cities of Sodom, Gammora, Seboim and Adama are featured in the Dead Sea. Perhaps the most exceptional part of this map are the illustrations along the bottom margin, each telling a biblical story and depicting scenes from the life of Jesus. The illustrations on the left depict the scenes of Christ's birth while the scenes on the right are from the crucifixion. The illustration in the center features the rising of Christ.<br><br>This map is based on an earlier map by Nicolaes Visscher. Published by the Keur family in the circa 1702 edition of the Keur Bible. Dutch text on verso. Map is in good condition with some wear along the folds. Some spotting at places. Some chipping and edge wear. Daniel Stoopendaal was a Dutch mapmaker and engraver in the early 17th century. He is famous for re-engraving the Holy Land maps of Nicolaes Visscher and for his landscape prints. This is a beautiful example of this work.

(Kyd does not seem to have been aware of these earlier books.) The anonymous author mentions Sheppard's book but dismisses it, claiming that it "extends not to the fortieth part of the matters relating to Corporations (v). He is correct; his book is much more extensive than Sheppard's and is more an analytical treatise than a handbook.         Magnalia Christi Americana: or, the Ecclesiastical History of New-England, from its first planting in the year 1620. unto the year of our lord, 1698. In seven books...

London: printed for Thomas Parkhurst, 1702. Folio. (12 1/4 x 7 7/8 inches). Double-page engraved map of New England and New York. Without errata leaves as usual. Expertly bound to style in 18th-century speckled calf, spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands, maroon morocco lettering-piece in the second compartment, the others with overall repeat decoration in gilt A first edition of the greatest history of New England: a landmark in colonial New England history, The first edition of what Howes calls the "most famous 18th century American book" and one which Streeter describes as, who describes as "the most famous American book of colonial times." Mather's opus is rightly considered an indispensable source for the history of New England in the 17th century, both for its biographies and its history of civil, religious, and military affairs. The seven books include 1) the history and settlement of New England; 2) the lives of its governors and magistrates; 3) biographies of "Sixty Famous Divines"; 4) a history and roll of Harvard College; 5) a history of the Congregational Church in New England; 6) a record of the remarkable providences revealing God's direct influence in particular events in the colonies; and 7) the "War of the Lord" dealing with the devil, the Separatists, Familists, Antinomians, Quakers, clerical imposters and the Indians. Much of the book's value rests in its incomparable wealth of detail regarding daily life in early colonial New England. David Hall has referred to it as "a mirror of the 1690's," the decade in which most of it was written. Far from being a dull chronicle of events, the Magnalia is full of lively biographical pieces, vivid descriptions of the times, and many surprising sidelights. It has been mined by all modern scholars of social history for its unsurpassed view of New England at the end of the 17th century. The map, known as the "Mather map" is actually titled An Exact Mapp of New England and New York . The first eighteenth-century general map of New England, it depicts an area from Casco Bay, west to the Hudson then south to Manhattan and north west past Long Island to Martha's Vineyard and Cape Cod, before heading north again past Boston to Casco Bay. The information concerning the early roads is particularly valuable, and the early versions of the spelling of the towns and rivers cast a fascinating light on the early topographic nomenclature of colonial America. Church 806; Grolier American 6; Howes M-391; Sabin 46392; Streeter sale I:658.

Arte de la lengua moxa, con su vocabulario, y cathecismo.

[Lima]: En la Imprenta real de Joseph de Contreras Small 8vo (15.5 cm; 6"). [8] ff., 664, 142, [22], 163?-202 pp., 1 f.. [1702] The first printed grammar, dictionary, and catechism in the language of the Moxo Indians of the lowlands of south-central Beni, a region of Bolivia. The language is a member of the Arawakan family. Marbán (1647?-1713), a native of Spain, was admitted to Society of Jesus in 1663 and sent to Peru in 1675, there to spend rest of his life among the Moxo Indians of Upper Peru (now Bolivia). 1701 is often given as the date of publication of this work, but since the last license to print is dated the middle of December, 1701, and the caption title of the "Cartilla, y doctrina cristina" is 1702, a publication date of 1701 is impossible. The notably variable and uneven printing here, sometimes very light and sometimes very dark, is typical of Peruvian printing's low-grade state in this era. Representing perhaps a particularly bad day, a compositor who had missed a phrase on p. 83 => inserted it in tiny type along the outer margin! 19th- or early 20th-century high quality Spanish acid-stained sheep, round spine with gilt tooling and a red leather spine label, a little rubbed. Private ownership stamp on verso of title, this showing through on recto; two instances of old light marginal waterstaining to a few leaves each and one leaf with a short marginal tear without loss. A copy completely unfoxed, clean and even crisp.

Tire des Principes du Droit Romain; & Des Dispositons de la Coutume de Paris. Avec La Refutaton de l'Opinion Contraire, & De Deux Ecrits Faits pour la Soutenir. Paris: Chez Louis Josse, 1702. [xxxvi], 216 pp. [Bound with] [Berger, Claude]. Confirmation Des Preuves de la Contributon a la Legitme par Tous les Enfans Ponataires, Et Preuves Nouvelles de la Contributon a la Legitme, Par tous les Donataires, Quels qu'ils Soient, Enfans, Ou Etrangers, Suppose que la Mesure de la Quotdie s'Etende sur les Donations Faites aux Derniers. Seconde Parte. Paris: Chez Louis Josse & Michel David, 1703. [viii], 306, [4] pp. Two books, comprising two parts, in one volume. 12mo. (6-1/4" x 3-1/2"). Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine with raised bands and lettering piece, gilt tooling to board edges, marbled endpapers, edges rouged, ribbon marker. Moderate rubbing to extremities, small chip to head of spine, corners bumped and somewhat worn. Light toning, light spotting in places, internally clean. An appealing copy. * Only edition. This two-part work by Berger, a Parisian lawyer, addresses the legitime, the part of an inheritance due from parents to their children. According to Parisian customary law, it could not be removed without a just cause for disinheritance. Berger, in the first part, discusses the two articles in the Coutume de Paris that deal with the legitime (after the reform of 1580). He argues that according to this, everything a father gives his son is given in advance of inheritance, and that every recipient who accepts an inheritance from his father must report it if he wishes to divide a surplus. Berger then discusses and refutes a number of objections, citing customary law, not just from Paris but also from Orleans, Berry, and elsewhere. He expands his argument in the second part, concentrating on the case of only children, and discusses the ways in which inheritance can legally be considered as the payment of a debt. OCLC records four copies, none in North America. Camus, Bibliotheque Choisie des Livres de Droit 1542, 1543.

"Von der Section und Inspection des Coerpers," its eleventh chapter, is especially interesting. An early example of medical jurisprudence.

Richard Sare at Grays-Inn-Gate in Holburn, London 1702 - Contemporary calf boards, corners slightly bumped, spine in six compartments, very minor fanning and foxing throughout. Small hole - a tear on the title page. Pages 22/23 two page map of Israel. The title page and pages 65, 218 have copper plate prints. Provenance ex-libris: has the bookplate of Ralph Sneyd (1692-1733 see more below). Also bookplate of Christine Flavell, unfortunately I haven't been able to find out more on this lady, Flavius Josephus is best remembered as an unparalleled chronicler of first-century C.E. Jewish history. His legacy also includes a military record marked by the betrayal of his peers and capitulation to the Romans. As a commander in the Jewish revolt, Josephus attempted to persuade his companions to open the gates of Yodfat for the Romans, and when the city fell, he reneged on the group¿s suicide pact and personally surrendered. After the destruction of Jerusalem, Flavius Josephus lived as a Roman citizen in the emperor¿s palace, enjoying the luxurious life of a dignitary and scholar. SNEYD, Ralph (1692-1733), of Keele Hall and Bradwell, Staffs Biography - The Sneyds were a Staffordshire family who had made their fortune in trade in the 16th century. Both Sneyd¿s great-grandfather and great-uncle were MPs in the Restoration period and his grandfather was a deputy-lieutenant at his death in 1703. Little is known about Sneyd¿s early life until he was elected to Parliament only a few months after his 21st birthday at the general election of 1713. On the Worsley list of this Parliament he was classed as a Tory. Not surprisingly, given his relative youth, he was not an active Member during the 1714 session. He was nominated on 23 Mar. to draft a Staffordshire highways bill, but may have been absent from the later stages of the session, having on 4 May been granted leave to go into the country for a month.2 Outside the Commons Sneyd¿s activities are difficult to differentiate from those of his numerous relatives, especially his namesake, and second cousin, Ralph Sneyd of Bishton, who was a j.p. in the later years of Queen Anne¿s reign. Ralph Sneyd of Keele has been regarded as a Jacobite owing to his role as the instigator of a riot at Newcastle-under-Lyme in July 1715 (for which he was subsequently indicted) during which the Dissenting meeting-house and the homes of prominent Nonconformists were attacked and Jacobite slogans chanted. The episode does not seem to have prevented his appointment as a j.p. in the commission of July 1717, and his name may simply have been inadvertently left out at first. This omission was rectified when Lord Chief Justice Parker (Thomas*) discovered it, as he related to Sneyd, while acting as an arbitrator in a dispute over compensation claims for damages against him for his role in the riots. Either Sneyd or a namesake was regarded in 1721 as likely to support a Jacobite rising. He retained his place on the bench until his death, which, when added to his appointment as a deputy-lieutenant in 1725 (upon Lord Ferrers¿ appointment as lord lieutenant), may indicate that he had modified his political stance, whereas his cousin of Bishton was left out of the commission in March 1718 due to his son¿s intervention against a government candidate in a by-election at Lichfield. Ralph Sneyd died at the end of October and was buried on 4 Nov. 1733. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Francis Bacon: a bibliography, 245. ** Francis Bacon, whose letters are published in this book, was an English politician, scientist and philosopher. Francis Bacon, son of a renowned jurist, was born in London in 1561. He studied at the University of Cambridge and Gray's Inn. In 1576 he interrupted his studies to travel abroad with the English ambassador in Paris. The sudden death of his father in February 1579 necessitated Bacon's return to England. Starting in 1584 he took his seat in parliament and in 1596 he became a Queen's Counsel. King James I knighted him in 1603. In 1613, Bacon was finally able to become Attorney General. His public career ended in disgrace in 1621. After falling into debt, a Parliamentary Committee of the administration of the law charged him with corruption. The viscount was sentenced to a fine of £40,000, which was remitted by the king. He was also committed to the Tower of London for the duration of the king's pleasure. In the end, his imprisonment lasted only a few days and he narrowly escaped being deprived of his titles. It has been argued that Bacon was in fact innocent of the bribery charges; Bacon himself said that he was forced to plead guilty so as to save King James from a political scandal. He said: 'I was the fairest judge there was in England these last fifty years. When the book of all hearts is opened, I trust I shall not be found to have the troubled fountain of a corrupt heart. I know I have clean hands and a clean heart. I am as innocent of bribes as any born on St Innocents Day.' Sir Francis Bacon died in 1626." - See The Divine Name. *** " Goldsborough hall passed to the Wharton family (in 1646) when Sir Richard's daughter, Elizabeth, married the Hon Philip Wharton. Her sister married Colonel Anthony Byerley of Middridge Grange. Their son Robert Byerley married Elizabeth and Philip's daughter, Mary Wharton in 1695. Robert Byerley was MP for County Durham and represented Knaresborough nine times between 1697 and 1710. He was a soldier and fought at the Battle of Buda 1686 and the Battle of the Boyne 1690. The story goes that Robert Byerley captured a fine brown horse at the Battle of Buda, the Byerley Turk, which is the eldest founding father to all thoroughbred horses. The Byerley Turk was buried at the Hall in 1706." - See Wikipedia . **** Full title reads: "Letters of Sr Francis Bacon, Baron of Verulam, Viscount St. Alban, and Lord High Chancellor of England.
