L'exemplaire conservé à la B.n.F. présente cependant une collation différente du notre et il ne comporte pas le très intéressant Privilège du Roy qui occupe 3 pages de notre exemplaire.*** RARE POSTHUMOUS FIRST EDITION OF THIS COMEDY BY BOURSAULT WHICH WAS REPRESENTED FOR THE FIRST TIME AFTER HIS DEATH, IN 1701.Ésope à la cour is a comedy in 5 acts and in verses with a vivid spirit, with a frank comedy and a natural style. As he was a protégé of the king, the author of Esope à la cour was obliged to withdraw a few passages of his play that contained abusive allusions towards Louis XIV.A BEAUTIFUL WIDE-MARGINED COPY OF THIS RARE COMEDY, PRESERVED IN ITS CONTEMPORARY FULL MOTTLED ROAN BINDING. *** Très bon

        Le Royaume de Naples..

      1702. Il Nolin installò l'attività editoriale di famiglia a Parigi, in via Rue St. Jacques, dove incise e vendette numerose mappe; su molte di queste, riportò erroneamente la dicitura di "incisore del Re" e "geografo del Duca di Orleans".         THE GOVERNMENT OF THE TONGUE

      Oxford: At the Theatre, 1702. Sixth Impression n. This is a very attractively bound copy of one of a series of popular moral works by (or attributed to) the well-known clergyman and author Allestree (1619-81), professor of divinity at Oxford and provost of Eton College. The text warns against criticizing, complaining, and lying, and condemns flattery, boasting, and obscenities. As DNB notes, "Allestree's influence on the late seventeenth-century church may owe less to his preaching or his university lectures than to the series of moral and devotional works" containing "sober, orthodox, common-sense advice pitched at the level of ordinary Anglican parishioners.". 191 x 121 mm. (7 1/2 x 4 3/4"). 8 p.l., 224 pp. Sixth Impression. Pleasing contemporary black morocco, covers gilt in an intricate panel design with floral sidepiece adornments and oblique floral spray cornerpieces, raised bands, spine compartments gilt with either filigree lozenge or fleuron at center, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. With engraved allegorical frontispiece. Front flyleaf with contemporary ownership inscription of Ann Clarke. Spine a bit faded, lower cover with a half dozen small patches of patina loss, title page lightly soiled, other trivial imperfections, but a really excellent copy, the text clean and quite fresh, and the unrestored contemporary binding entirely solid and with nothing approaching significant wear.         Mezzotint engraving by John Smith (1654-1720) after Pierce Tempest (1653-1717) depicting a group of putti, one playing the cello

      London, 1702. An Italian violinist and composer, "Cosimi had only two students before the publication on 9 November 1702 of his Sonate da camera a violino e violone o cembalo op.1, but had 20 after its publication." Lowell Lindgren in Grove Music Online.. 194 x 248 mm. This fine engraving was used as the title to Nicola Cosimi's chamber sonatas, op. 1. It depicts three musical putti, one playing the cello, one holding a violin, and the other singing while from an open book of music. An angel points to the titling of the work on a stone plinth with one hand while holding an oval coat of arms (possibly that of the dedicatee, The Duke of Bedford) and a keyless trumpet in the other. Slightly worn and abraided at corners; slightly unevenly trimmed to plate mark; remnants of hinges to upper corners of verso.

        Some memorandums of matters of fact, relating to the original and preliminaries of a suit in Doctors-Commons,

      4to., (2) 55 (1)pp., lower margin of title rather soiled, contemporary ink signature of "Dr Jane" in upper margin, bound in 19th century quarter calf over marbled card covers. A good copy. A fascinating case of an evident serious breakdown in relations between a country clergyman and both his patron and his parishioners. Sir Hugh Everard (ca. 1654-1706), 3rd Baronet of Much Waltham in the County of Essex seems - according to the Rev. John Oswald's perhaps partial account - to have wanted to get rid of Oswald from the living. Everard charges Oswald with a menu of serious malpractices which he considers provided sufficient evidence for the Vicar to be ejected from the parish. Among the allegations reference is made to the refusal of administering the Holy Sacrament to about 80 parishioners, and financial bullying (demanding unpaid tithes including those owed by Sir Hugh Everard himself). Oswald notes that on one occasion the vicarage itself was attacked at night by "confederates" of those who wanted the vicar driven out. When all this failed, Oswald alleges that he was then subjected to a blizzard of unsubstantiated accusations, all untrue. "That the said petition proving ineffectual to get their ends of J. Oswald, and turn him out of his living, they proceeded farther to draw up articles against him, charging him with the crimes of adultery, fornication, (tho' neither of these is deposed by any of the witnesses), incontinency, drunkenness, and several neglects of his ministerial office, as vicar of the parish of Much-Waltham". The case eventually went to the Court of Arches, the costs of ?40 being paid by a general meeting of parishioners. Oswald's defence rested in part on the legal rights of the clergy - which he argued he had properly relied on - and the improper levying of legal costs on to parishioners. But he also adds the human plea that it was grossly unfair for him to be the subject of a "narrow and diligent search into the privacies of his life for the space of fourteen or fifteen years past". It was, Oswald declared, "contrary to the common interest of humane society, that such rigid enquiries should be made into men's lives, especially into clergymen's whereby their reputation is expos'd to all the slanderous reports of ill-minded and indigent persons".

        MAGNALIA CHRISTI AMERICANA: OR, THE ECCLESIASTICAL HISTORY OF NEW-ENGLAND, FROM ITS FIRST PLANTING IN THE YEAR 1620. UNTO THE YEAR OF OUR LORD, 1698. IN SEVEN BOOKS...

      London: Thomas Parkhurst, 1702. [30],38,[2],75,[2],238,[2],125-222,100,[2],88,118,[2]pp. plus double-page map. Without errata leaves, as usual. Folio. Contemporary calf boards, rebacked, spine gilt. French assignat and bookplate of Edward Everett on front pastedown. Ownership inscription on titlepage. Initial leaves (including map) lightly dampstained at foot of gutter, edges tanned, some light foxing. About very good. In a cloth slipcase. The first edition of what Streeter calls "the most famous American book of colonial times." Mather's opus is an indispensable source for the history of New England in the 17th century, both for its biographies and its history of civil, religious, and military affairs. Much of the book's value rests in its incomparable wealth of detail regarding daily life in early colonial New England. David Hall has referred to it as "a mirror of the 1690's," the decade in which most of it was written. Far from being a dull chronicle of events, the MAGNALIA... is full of lively biographical pieces, vivid descriptions of the times, and many surprising sidelights. It has been mined by all modern scholars of social history for its unsurpassed view of New England at the end of the 17th century. The map, which depicts New England, Long Island, and eastern New York, has been labeled by cartographic historian Barbara McCorkle as "the first eighteenth-century general map of New England." It was probably adopted from A NEW MAP OF NEW ENGLAND. NEW YORK. NEW IARSEY. PENSILVANIA. MARYLAND. AND VIRGINIA, likely composed by Phillip Lea in 1680. This copy bears the bookplate of Edward Everett, a Massachusetts politician who served in the House of Representatives for ten years and as Massachusetts governor for one term. He was also briefly Secretary of State during the Millard Fillmore administration. He is best remembered today for giving the impossibly long- winded oration which preceded Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, but Everett was in fact a man of many accomplishments and a noted historian; he holds the distinction of being the youngest person ever elected to the American Antiquarian Society. A landmark in colonial New England history, and a book of increasing rarity. HOWES M391, "b." STREETER SALE 658. EUROPEAN AMERICANA 702/127. HOLMES, COTTON MATHER 213. SABIN 46392. CHURCH 806. (Kyd does not seem to have been aware of these earlier books.) The anonymous author mentions Sheppard's book but dismisses it, claiming that it "extends not to the fortieth part of the matters relating to Corporations (v). He is correct; his book is much more extensive than Sheppard's and is more an analytical treatise than a handbook. This was clearly the author's ambition: "I have not only shewed the nature of Corporations, and by what words ere

        Lycophronis Chalcidensis Alexandra, obscurum poema. .

      Oxford: E Theatro Shedoniano , 1702. Second edition. Buckram. Very Good/The Greek poets of the Hellenistic period (following the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BCE and lasting three hundred years until the establishment of the Roman Empire) have a reputation for indulging in an ornate and sometimes opaque style that we would later associate with Mannerist poets like Gongora or Marino. Lycophron's Alexandra (or Cassandra) may be the epitome of that style. Even Alexandrian scholars of the time referred to it as "the obscure poem." Wikipedia quotes a modern critic who says the Alexandra "may be the most illegible piece of classical literature, one which nobody can read without a proper commentary and which even then makes very difficult reading." That must be why in the opening line the poet says, "I will spell out everything clearly, whatever you ask, from the very beginning." The Wiki article continues, "The poem is evidently intended to display the writer's knowledge of obscure names and uncommon myths; it is full of unusual words of doubtful meaning gathered from the older poets, and long-winded compounds coined by the author. ... It was very popular, and was read and commented on very frequently. Two explanatory paraphrases of the poem survive, and the collection of scholia by Isaac and John Tzetzes is very valuable." The Oxford edition by John Potter (later Archbishop of Canterbury) offered here includes the Tzetzes scholia, as well as an exuberant Latin version of the poem by Joseph Scaliger (first published in 1566, when Scaliger was 25 years old) and notes by Scaliger's friend Willem Canter. Potter first published the text in 1697, but only this second edition bears his dedicatory epistle to the German classical scholar (who taught at Utrecht) Johann Georg Graevius.. Folio (32 cm); [16], 183, [1], [28], [6], 174, [18] pages, and full-page engraved frontispiece by Michael Burghers of a laurel-crowned Cassandra, standing before the walls of Troy in flames. Greek and Latin in parallel columns. Collation includes title page in Greek (with engraved vignette of the Sheldonian Theatre) and a second title page in Latin (with vignette of Oxford University's crest). Advertisement leaf at end. Bound in modern library buckram. Pages somewhat toned at edges, but text block is sturdy and without significant blemish. References: ESTC T107442;

        Broadside. Begins: "Petition for the Laird of Kilravock and others the vassals of Lovat....

      [Edinburgh Folio. [1] p.. ca. 1702] The tenants of the Lovat estate petition for a delay in producing the writs and securities of their holdings, as the protracted dispute between the Lovat family and the infamous Capt. Simon Fraser of Beaufort (who attempted a forced marriage to the family's heiress, young Amelia Fraser, before successfully kidnapping and wedding her mother, the dowager Lady Amelia Murray) has left them in a sorry state regarding the payment of creditors. Not only does this broadside touch on the common perspective of a great contemporary scandal, but it is of interest for its scarcity as well. => No holdings are listed by WorldCat, ESTC, or NUC Pre-1956. Excellent clean condition, with two small sewing holes at inner margin, one very small spot of foxing, and ink traces from printing process to outer edge. Tipped onto a leaf of 19th-century paper.

        El sol increado dios trino y uno, y la grande excelencia de su culto y devocion.

      Originally published in 1702 and here in its first Mexican edition, this work on God and the Trinity is from the pen of a Capuchin from Seville -- hence his religious name. He served as a missionary in Andalucia and, despite assertions by one university cataloguer that are copied by several others, he never was a missionary in Mexico.The volume ends with a "Corona Florida a la Santisima Trinidad," being a small literary collection of coplas, canciones, and a romance "en Metafora del Sol, que discurre por los doce signos del Zodiaco." Binding: Publisher's mottled sheep, gilt spine extra. Marbled endpapers; all edges red.

De Hooghe: (frontispiece with explanation, 1) 69 folia. Contemporary blind-stamped Leather with 6 raised bands, 8 corner-pieces and 2 clasps, Folio H. 47,5 x L. 32 x W. 12 cm. (Dutch Luther Bible containing the Old and New Testament and the Apocrypha. This edition is translated from the German by Nicolaes Biestkens and is revised by Adolf Visscher. Adolf Visscher revised the Mennonite translation of Biestkens and his translation became the standard Bible for the Dutch Lutherans. The Bible is interleaved with the work of Romeyn de Hooghe which contains a frontispiece with explanation, a titlepage, 5 maps and 69 folia, each with 2 engravings and marginal notes. This set of Bible illustrations was bound in a number of different translations and editions of the Bible during this period. The total work contains 3 frontispieces, a portrait, 5 maps and 138 engravings with ca. 800 illustrations on them. All of the frontispieces, maps, engravings, vignettes and capital letters are beautifully handcoloured and heightened with gold by the uncrowned master of the late 17th century Dutch colourists, Dirk Jansz. van Santen. Van Santen was an unsurpassed artist and made beautiful pieces of art out of numerous book illustrations. Typical for his colouring is the abundant use of gold and the use of vivid colours for both the borders and the engravings and maps itself. On the 11th of February 1982, prof. H. de la Fontaine Verwey, who thoroughly explored Van Santen’s oeuvre, inspected this Bible, and certified that the colouring is undoubtedly by the hand of Van Santen. The work has not been for sale before. For generations it has been the property of a private family in Haarlem and the last 30 years it has been in the hands of a private collector. An exceptionally beautiful copy. What makes it even more exclusive is the fact that the engravings by De Hooghe, although very appreciated, were almost never coloured. This was due to the numerous details and the almost impressionistic design of his engravings which made it almost impossible for the colourists to colour the prints without creating chaos. However, Van Santen was able to give even the prints by De Hooghe extra quality and the splendid colouring proves his unmistakable expertise.) 2 werken in 1 band, Bijbel: (titelprent, 2, portret, 15) 278, 112, 70, (titelprent met verklaring) 132 folia.
