        General Ecclesiastical History

1702. ECHARD, Laurence. A General Ecclesiastical History from the Nativity of Our Blessed Saviour to the First Establishment of Christianity by Humane Laws, under the Emperour Constantine the Great. London: by W. Bowyer, for Jacob Tonson, 1702. Tall folio (10 by 16 inches), contemporary full red morocco, elaborately gilt-decorated spine and covers in the Cottage style, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. $2850.First edition of Echard’s history of the early days of the Christian church, with finely engraved frontispiece by Van der Gucht and double-page engraved map of the Holy Land. This copy splendidly bound in an elaborately gilt-decorated Restoration binding.“A work valuable in many respects… the best of its kind” (Lowndes, 711). “Having been ordained by Moore, bishop of Norwich, Echard was presented to the livings of Welton and Elkington, Lincolnshire, and was appointed chaplain to the Bishop of Lincoln. For more than twenty years he resided in Lincolnshire, chiefly at Louth, where during that time he wrote a number of works” (DNB). This later Restoration-era binding was skillfully accomplished in the style of Roger Bartlett, a renowned London bookbinder active until 1695 or so, using several tulip, flower, leaf and roll tools likely from his workshop. Faint marginal dampstain to lower corner of text, otherwise interior very clean, with wide margins. Expert restoration to spine ends and corners only; binding remarkably well preserved, gilt very bright. A splendid volume.

Amsterdam, August 25 1704. 3 work in 1 volume. 4to. Contemporary half calf, repairs to the spine.

      - Bierens de Haan 2784-2786; Cat. NHSM, p. 329; cf. v.d. Aa IV, p. 162. Rare and interesting work on dyke construction, illustrating the continuing battle of the Dutch against the sea. On April 5 1702, the dyke between Amsterdam and Muiden was breached (see plate 1). The Amsterdam advocate Nicolaas Listingh designed a new construction for the dyke to prevent the sand being washed away by the pounding of the waves. Listingh proposed the construction of partitions that were placed in oblique angles. Each partition consisted of a row of piles driven into the ground. The oblique corners would break the battering of the waves and prevent erosion. Among the 6 engravings in the first work is a view on Muiden by Stoopendael from De Zegepraalende Vecht . In the second work, Listingh describes another device, a so-called "sea forcer," aimed to break the waves before they hit the dyke. The large folding plate (59 x 49 cm), depicting this construction, is engraved by Stoopendael. Listingh defends his construction on the grounds that it is cheaper and more effective than the other proposals. The final four pages contain a letter by Listingh on dyke construction. Bookplates with text "Majorat Meuselwitz" on inside front cover; some browning and staining; plates 1,4,5 with minor tears on folds where they are attached to book with some restorations.

La guerre d'Italie, ou memoires du Comte D ***. Contenant quantité de choses particulières qui se sont passées dans les cours d'Allemagne, de France, d'Espagne, de Savoïe & d'Italie

New edition, after the original 1702 published by the same publisher. Illustrated four folding maps, one of Italy with its various kingdoms and republics. Full contemporary calf. Back tooled raised. Part of title in red morocco. A slight lack in mind. Slot in the upper joint tail. A torn map of Mantua. Friction. Pretty good copy. The war in Italy is an excellent narrative, teeming with picturesque details; it begins in a very romantic way to tell before starting the battles of Piedmont, Turin and Milan, and the political intrigues between Spain, France, the Duke of Savoy and the duchies of Italy. The book draws indeed two records, memoirs and historical genre, and they will find love affairs, many trips and descriptions as a rigorous account of battles and armies in Italy. --- Please note that the translation in english is done automatically, we apologize if the formulas are inaccurate.         Astronomiae Physicae & Geometricae Elementa.

First edition Oxford: Sheldonian Theatre, 1702. A fine copy of the first text book of astronomy based on Newtonian principles, which contains the first printings of Newton's lunar theory and his "classical scholia". Babson 71; Gray 87. "The nephew of James Gregory, the mathematician, and the son of the Laird of Kinnairdie, David Gregory (1659-1708) was educated at the University of Edinburgh where he was soon appointed to it chair of Mathematics in 1683. In 1684 he sent Newton a manuscript showing the application of the method of infinite series to a variety of geometrical problems. The two met in 1691 and shortly afterwards Newton helped him obtain the Savilian Chair of Astronomy at Oxford. In 1702 Gregory published Astronomiae Physicae & Geometricae as the first textbook of astronomy based on Newtonian principles. The introduction includes the "Classical Scholia" which Newton had prepared for insertion in his planned second edition of the Principia. This attempted to show that essential elements of Newtonian science were also espoused in classical times. Gregory also included Newton's Theory of the Moon's Motion [Lunae Theoria Newtoniana, pp.332-336], long used as a guide for practical astronomers in determining the moon's motion." (Gjertsen: The Newton Handbook). Sotheran I: 1652; Wallis 87; Houzeau & Lancaster 9240.Folio: 369 x 245 mm. Contemporary Cambrdige panelled calf. Expertly re-backed, preseving the original gilt leather label. A very nice copy. Internally clean and fine throughout. Provenance: armorial book-plate to front paste-down of the Earl of Breadalbane. Superb rare map on Indonesia and northern Australia by Heinrich Scherer (1628-1704) for his Atlas Novus exhibens orbem terraguem per naturae opera, historiae navae acveterus monumenta, artistique geographicae leges et praecepta...published in eight volumes from 1702-1710 in Munich.         (Tantum Distamus ab Invicem)

Interesting map of the Pacific Ocean North West of America and the North East of Asia by Heirich Scherer for his Atlas Novus exhibens orbem terraguem per naturae opera, historiae navae acveterus monumenta, artistique geographicae leges et praecepta...published in eight volumes from 1702-1710 in Munich. Scherer, a devout Jesuit, produced this geographical compendium to depict the Catholic hierarchy and the spread of Jesuit missions throughout the world. The map reflects the European knowledge of the Pacific North West of America and the North East of Asia in the early 18th century. The most striking aspect of the map is that it is projected as a mirror image of the actual surface geography with Japan in the east and North America in the West. Of particular interest with this rare map is the depiction of California. California was for the the better part of a century depicted as an island. However, this theory would be disproved following Father Eusebio Francisco Kino's mission to Baja California in 1701. Although his findings would only be published 1705, cartographers such as Scherer and Nicolas De Fer began to contemplate Baja California as a peninsula. That being said, this map continues to perpetuate the California as an island myth. Two figures are shown on the map: the first is positioned on the left side of the title cartouche and depicts a Native American. The second figure, parallel to the figure on the left side, is dressed in Middle Eastern garments with a hawk perching on his outstretched hand. The map in also decorated with two ships and sea monsters. Copper engraving, in very good condition. Monaco Munich 348 236

Sciagraphiam Liberae Venationis Germanicae Imprimis Verò Svevicae, Vulgo Die freye Pürst-Gerechtigkeit / Favente Supremo Numine. (Bound with:) De libera venatione speciatim Suevo-Memmingensi.

Tübingen Erhard/Eitel 1702. 2 works in 1 volume. 4to (15,3 x 18,5 cm). (2), 70, 20 pp. Modern boards. With a foldout map (18,5 x 27 cm) of Memmingen and the Bosserhard. Two rare 18th-century German theses (Jagdrechtliche Hochschulschrifte from the university of Tübingen) on hunting, bound together in 1 volume. Kessel's thesis (1702) is the oldest. It gives an overview in 25 chapters on the right of free hunting in the Bosserhard near Memmingen (Swabia). By the end of the 17th century there was hardly any free hunting area left. Sayler's thesis (1753) discusses Swabian hunting law, especially concering Memmingen and surroundings and more specifically on the Bosserhard. The appendix contains 10 hunting instructions, protocols and ordinances for the area from the 16th until the 18th century. The beautiful and detailed map by Johann Friedrich Rupf shows the area around Memmingen (20 x 30 km). The boundaries of the Bosserhard are also shown. Copy from the famous hunting library of Kurt Lindner (Bibliotheca Tiliana). His ex-libris on pastedown and two small stamps of the library on the verso of the title page and the last page of the second thesis.         Untitled Chart of 'White Sand Bay']

Henry Jones, c.1702., London, - Cornwall Engraved map. Little is known of the surveyor, Frederick de Hauttecourt; his will, dated 16th March, 1704 describes him as "Frederick de Hauttecourt, Gentleman of Saint Margaret Westminster"; he is referred in the text as surveying Cornwall with Thomas Tuttell, the King's Hydrographer, a globe-maker and instrument-maker. The surveys in Cornwall form all his recorded survey work. The sheet contains a chart of Whitesand Bay set above an extensive letterpress text; the chart shows the Bay, on the tip of Cornwall, from 'H' ('Cape Cornwall'), and the coast just to the north, south to 'G' (S.t Levant'), with the 'K' ('the Long ships') to the coast, surveyed at an approximate scale of one inch to one statute mile. The land was owned by Henry Jones, the presumed publisher, but was later acquired by Edward Boscawen, a vice-admiral in the Navy. The text notes: ". The Charges of building the said Mould, will be very small and easie to the Publick, but the Benefit greater than I can express, therefore shall refer my self to Mr. Hauttecourt, who together with Mr. Tuttell His Late Majesty?Äôs Hydrographer, did lately survey our Western Coasts, and approved of this Place, as the most convenient Receptacle for Shipping, being the in and outlet of the Kingdom, and opposite to Brest. I heartily wish our Gracious Soveraign the Queen and Her Parliament would provide for the Improvement of this Place at the Lands End, ?Äòtwould very much increase our Strength and Riches, as it hath France and Holland, by the Improvement of their Harbours."with particular advantages for Liverpool merchants, whose ships could safely over-night there on the way to and from London, rather than risking the treacherous waters round the Scilly Isles or swinging wide out into the Channel and risking capture by the French. 143 by 257mm.

Epidermures. Nombreuses erreurs de paginations (numéros répétés, sauts de pages, etc.). Ex-libris biffé sur les titres datés de 1703, ex-libris 18e sur le faux-titre. Rare exemplaire de la seconde édition.

Woodcut diagrams in the text. 3 p.l., 5-55, [9], 95, [1] pp. Small 4to, 18th-cent. calf (rebacked & recornered), red morocco lettering piece on spine. London: Typis TB. for A. & I. Churchill et al., 1702. Third edition; the first edition appeared in 1690 and the second in 1697. Raphson (d. 1715 or 1716), also wrote the important History of Fluxions (1715) and translated Newton's Arithmetica Universalis into English (1720). He was a fellow of the Royal Society. "In 1690, Joseph Raphson…published a tract, Analysis aequationum universalis. His method closely resembles that of Newton. The only difference is this, that Newton derives each successive step, p, q, r, of approach to the root, from a new equation, while Raphson finds it each time by substitution in the original equation…Raphson does not mention Newton; he evidently considered the difference sufficient for his method to be classed independently. To be emphasized is the fact that the process which in modern texts goes by the name of 'Newton's method of approximation,' is really not Newton's method, but Raphson's modification of it…It is doubtful, whether this method should be named after Newton alone…Raphson's version of the process represents what J. Lagrange recognized as an advance on the scheme of Newton…Perhaps the name 'Newton-Raphson method' would be a designation more nearly representing the facts of history."-Cajori, A History of Mathematics, p. 203. The first edition is very rare. The Appendix appears for the first time in the second edition of 1697 along with the separately paginated second part De Spatio reali. Fine fresh copy. 19th-century bookplate of P. Duncan.

Francis Bacon: a bibliography, 245. ** Francis Bacon, whose letters are published in this book, was an English politician, scientist and philosopher. Francis Bacon, son of a renowned jurist, was born in London in 1561. He studied at the University of Cambridge and Gray's Inn. In 1576 he interrupted his studies to travel abroad with the English ambassador in Paris. The sudden death of his father in February 1579 necessitated Bacon's return to England. Starting in 1584 he took his seat in parliament and in 1596 he became a Queen's Counsel. King James I knighted him in 1603. In 1613, Bacon was finally able to become Attorney General. His public career ended in disgrace in 1621. After falling into debt, a Parliamentary Committee of the administration of the law charged him with corruption. The viscount was sentenced to a fine of £40,000, which was remitted by the king. He was also committed to the Tower of London for the duration of the king's pleasure. In the end, his imprisonment lasted only a few days and he narrowly escaped being deprived of his titles. It has been argued that Bacon was in fact innocent of the bribery charges; Bacon himself said that he was forced to plead guilty so as to save King James from a political scandal. He said: 'I was the fairest judge there was in England these last fifty years. When the book of all hearts is opened, I trust I shall not be found to have the troubled fountain of a corrupt heart. I know I have clean hands and a clean heart. I am as innocent of bribes as any born on St Innocents Day.' Sir Francis Bacon died in 1626." - See The Divine Name. *** " Goldsborough hall passed to the Wharton family (in 1646) when Sir Richard's daughter, Elizabeth, married the Hon Philip Wharton. Her sister married Colonel Anthony Byerley of Middridge Grange. Their son Robert Byerley married Elizabeth and Philip's daughter, Mary Wharton in 1695. Robert Byerley was MP for County Durham and represented Knaresborough nine times between 1697 and 1710. He was a soldier and fought at the Battle of Buda 1686 and the Battle of the Boyne 1690. The story goes that Robert Byerley captured a fine brown horse at the Battle of Buda, the Byerley Turk, which is the eldest founding father to all thoroughbred horses. The Byerley Turk was buried at the Hall in 1706." - See Wikipedia . **** Full title reads: "Letters of Sr Francis Bacon, Baron of Verulam, Viscount St. Alban, and Lord High Chancellor of England.
