Jean Baptiste NOLIN (circa 1657 - 1708)
"Friends, Romans, Countrymen, lend me your Ears," SHAKESPEARE, William. Julius Caesar. A Tragedy. As it is Now Acted at the Theatre Royal. London: Henry Herringman, and Richard Bentley, 1691. THE SECOND QUARTO EDITION OF ONE OF SHAKESPEARE'S MOST POPULAR PLAYS. 4to. (219 x 160 mm), (i)60pp.. bound in 19th century 1/2 green morocco and marbled boards and endpapers, modern custom 1/4 green morocco clam-shell slipcase. Small repairs at fore-edge of title, scattered foxing and occasional mild toning, overall A VERY GOOD COPY. Provenance: Frederick William Cosens (1819-1889, bookplate); Ralph Vallone, Jr. (bookplate). Julius Caesar was one of the twenty plays which made their first appearance in the 1623 First Folio. Of these, three were issued in quarto format during the 17th century: The Taming of the Shrew, Macbeth, and Julius Caesar. The first quarto of Julius Caesar appeared in 1684. Bartlett placed four undated quartos between this and the present 1691 edition (making this the sixth). Only two contain a date, the first 1684 and this 1691, and all seem to have been published to take advantage of the play's popularity after Thomas Betterton revived it at Drury Lane in 1682. However, more recently Wing gave priority to this edition, placing the undated editions at around 1695. Bartlett 117; Pforzheimer 886; Wing S-2922A. Who we are - D&D Galleries was founded in 1985. [RIEGEL, Christoph].
First edition of a topographical and historical description of the Low Countries. Part of a series of independently published descriptions of countries and regions in Europe by the famous publishing house of Christoph Riegel in Nuremberg with branches in Frankfurt and Leipzig. All volumes are illustrated with the well-known "Riegel views and plans".The "accuraten Land-Carte", mentioned on the title-page is not present, as in all copies we could trace. This very rare map was separately published in the same year as "Land-Karte der XVII niederländischen Provinzien". Our copy is therefore complete. With a small library stamp on the recto and verso of the title-page; the usual browning, otherwise in good condition. VD 17, 39:107693D; WorldCat (9 copies); cf. Maydman, Henry
London: William Bonny. Very rare antique 1691 leather bound copy. The book is overall in very good condition with just some minor and typical signs of wear and age. It has been nicely rebacked with a new leather spine. The leather covers have some scuffing and wear with some corner wear and edge wear. The binding of the book is good and strong. The book is illustrated with a nice frontispiece portrait of Maydman. There is a very minor & very tiny hole to the portrait face which is approximately the size of the tip of a pen. As issued by the publisher, there are a couple of printing errors to some page numbers. However, the content is correct and the book is complete. The interior is toned from age with some scattered light foxing. Along with that there is likely the very occasional page with some kind of other minor imperfection such as a minor bit of soiling or grubbiness, creased page corner, light wrinkle, tiny chip or tear, etc. Generally though, it's a very nice copy. The book measures approximately 6 5/8 inches by 4 1/2 inches and is 348 pages long. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
