DESCARTES, Rene
Amstelaedami: Joannem Ravesteinium, 1692. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "It is not enough to have a good mind; the main thing is to use it well." - René Descartes René Descartes was a 17th-century French philosopher whose theories and discoveries spawned an influx of commentary and responsive writings from western philosophers. He wrote numerous studies on a variety of topics including meteorology, physics, dioptrics, mechanics, and even music. According to the 'Printing and the Mind of Man', "It is no exaggeration to say that Descartes was the first of modern philosophers and one of the first modern scientists; in both branches of learning his influence has been vast The revolution he caused can be most easily found in his reassertion of the principle (lost in the Middle Ages) that knowledge, if it is to have any value, must be intelligence and not erudition. His application of modern arithmetic to ancient geometry created the analytical geometry which is the basis of the post-Euclidean development of that science." One of Descartes more popular treatises was 'Passions of the Soul'. This work was a philosophical approach to human emotions or 'passions' and seeks to make connections on the relationships between morality and sciences. This work notably influenced 19th-century philosophers and their theories on metaphysics.

Paris, Aug. 1692 (27 Aug. 1692). + 1 blank f. (docket). Worn and partially defective; some staining, and priced accordingly. Very good. ¶ Manuscript and printed documents which illustrate the legislation and regulations of mayors in France, and the sale of municipal offices during the late 17th- and early 18th-century. The present collection a printed copy of the actual 1692 Royal Edict which authorizes the sales of mayoral offices; moreover, there is a contemporary MS account of a lawsuit by such a (former) mayor against the town of Arras. ¶ The significance of this rare Edict is described by Michael P. Breen: "In the early 1690s, as the monarchy struggled to keep its armies in the field against the combined forces of England, the Dutch Republic, Austria, and the Holy Roman Empire, it began aggressively to tap the wealth of France's towns, selling virtually all existing municipal offices and creating new ones for sale. In August 1692, Louis XIV created offices of "perpetual mayors" along with new assesseurs in all walled cities except Paris and Lyon. The threat of losing control over their city's principal office, it appears, was enough to motivate the leading inhabitants of many major cities to pay the cr … [Click Below for Full Description]

Le Clerc, Jean
Awnsham & Churchill, 1692. First Edition. Hardcover. 12mo. Two parts in one volume. [12], 182, [2], [8], 199 [i.e. 190] pp. Contemporary English sprinkled calf, expertly rebacked, original endleaves preserved (browned and a bit brittle; inner hinges strengthened with brown paper). As commonly, this early English "trade" binding did not have endpapers bound in. Title-page with 1" tear between two lines of text (not affecting any words). Blind-stamps of the now defunct Theological Institute of Connecticut on first and final leaves. Very good. ¶ Jean Le Clerc (1657-1736), a Swiss Protestant by birth, was one of the outstanding figures in Anglo-Dutch intellectual history. A prolific author, he edited three great encyclopedias comprising eighty-three volumes which were very influential in the development of the Age of Reason. The present work was written as a textbook for his own students and was used at Cambridge as a standard text for many years, going through five editions by 1716. Part I is prefaced by a four-page dedication to Robert Boyle; Part II begins with a four-page dedication to John Locke. (Le Clerc was also the author of the first biography of Locke. The author's argument throughout generally follows that of Locke. Part III is distinctly anti-Cartesian. ¶ Numerous early ownership inscriptions, the most interesting (to us) is that "Paul Droilhet" who has inscribed the verso of title-page; this individual may have been the Huguenot Elder in the French Reformed Church in New York City (died ca. 1712). The title-page was inscribed at an early date by W. Smith, who adde … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Chile; peace treaty with the Araucanians; Poveda, Toma Marin de].
16 December, 1692. Madrid. Small folio. 16 pp. Modern wrappers. Excellent condition.- First edition; an extraordinarily rare –apparently the only known copy- pamphlet containing parlay and general assembly, as well as the articles of peace signed between Don Tomas Marin de Poveda, Governor of Chile and a group of Araucanian leaders of certain provinces: all whom are noted. The document gives the names of some hundreds of the Caciques or chiefs who attended the assembly, and the “reducciones” and places they were from. Also given are the names of the Spaniards and laymen who were present, and the 39 articles of the treaty. With the Peace Treaty between those Indian rulers and the Spanish settlers, agreement was reached as to the terms under which Catholic missionaries would preach the Holy Gospel and convert the native peoples. Among the articles may be noted the following: Spaniards to be allowed to settle, a warning against other strangers from Europe who might come to try and capture them (the Indians) as slaves. Tomas Lopez Marin y Poveda (1650-1703) was a Spanish colonial officer, he first came to America accompanying his uncle, the Archbishop of Charcas, after a period in the colonies he returned to Spain; after a few years in Spain he was sent back to America, this time to Chile, and appointed Governor. His period as Governor was market by unrest, a flare-up with the native population, and a pirate raid to the coast. No copies in OCLC. Not in Sabin or Medina. Maggs Bib. Americana VI (1927), no. 284 - this copy.

Printed, and are to be Sold by William Marshall at the Bible in Newgate-street. 1692. (It says Volume 1 but only vol. I was printed.) Folio 13.5" x 8.5" [36x22x7cm] The pagination is [6], 104, 173-292, 369-456, 467-502, 553-646, [4], 647-686, 741-868, [38]; it collates pi2, A2, B-O4, Aa-Pp4, Aaa-Lll4, Nnn-Qqq4, Rrr2, Aaaa-Llll4, Mmmm2, Nnnn-Qqqq4, Aaaaa-Mmmmm4, Nnnnn-Sssss2, Ttttt-Zzzzz2, Aaaaaa-Dddddd2. The first three pages have a little marginal damage and loss. There is some worm holes in the margins of the last few pages. The binding is old calf boards rather rubbed at the edges and recently rebacked. NB Bunyan's works were almost invariably printed on the lowest quality and least expensive paper the printers could find. Granger in his 'Biographical History of England,' states that the works of Bunyan 'had long been printed on tobacco paper.' A note in Wickens' biography of Bunyan (1853) states that "Mr. Philip, speaking of the paper on which Bunyan's works were first printed, says that it seemed to be the very worst which the publishers could obtain." Thus this volume for the most part is good and white but there are parts where the pages brown with foxing. All copies are like this. The majority of the works left unpublished at Bunyan's death, were not published until 1692, in the folio volume prepared by his friend and disciple John Doe. This contained ten of these posthumous books, most of which had been prepare … [Click Below for Full Description]

Locke, John
Awnsham and John Churchill, London, 1692. First edition of John Locke's classic work on money. Small octavo, bound in full English calf with a red morocco spine label with titles in gilt, gilt bands to the spine, page edges speckled black and red, rebacked. In very good condition. Exceptionally rare. Set out in a letter to a Member of Parliament in 1691, Some Considerations on the Consequences of the Lowering of Interest and the Raising of the Value of Money contains Locke's general supply and demand theory. Based on the biblical passage "money answers all things" (Ecclesiastes), Locke concludes that the demand for money is exclusively regulated by it quantity regardless of whether the demand for money is unlimited or constant. The argument contains a very early theory of capitalisation, such as land, which has value because "by its constant production of saleable commodities it brings in a certain yearly income." Locke considered the demand for money to be virtually the same as the demand for goods or land and dependent on the desire for money as medium of exchange. As a medium of exchange, he states that "money is capable by exchange to procure us the necessaries or conveniences of life," and for loanable funds, "it comes to be of the same nature with land by yielding a certain yearly income. or interest." It was an attempt to influence Parliament to defeat a bill to lower the legal rate of interest from 6% to 4% - it was fixed by law at 5% on January 23rd 1692. "Locke followed William Petty closely in deriving his theory of interest from an analysis of rent. He still regarded rent as the only surplus, and inquired how money, which was by nature barren, could have the same productive character as the soil, which did produce something useful. His conclusion was that just as the unequal distribution of land enabled those who had more than they could cultivate themselves to take a tenant from whom they obtained rent, so the unequal distribution of money enabled its owners to obtain a tenant for it from whom they could receive interest" Erich Roll p.115"It was, however, Locke's e … [Click Below for Full Description]

Engraved frontispiece portrait of L’Estrange by Roger White after Geoffrey Kneller and a full page engraving of Aesop surrounded by the animal subjects of his stories. Folio in fours, (318 x 200mm.), handsomely bound in full paneled calf of the period, the spine with raised bands bordered with double fillet ruled panels in blind, original endleaves. [viii], 1-28, [8], 480. A pleasing and unpressed, quite clean copy of the book. Both the portrait engraving and the Aesop engraving in good order and well preserved. The original binding still handsome, authentic and well preserved. THE SCARCE FIRST EDITION OF PERHAPS THE MOST POPULAR VERSION OF AESOP’S FABLES YET PRINTED. Roger L"Estrange’s vital and vigorous telling of these stories has been reprinted extensively right up to this very day, it was the version chosen by the Golden Cockerel Press for their beautiful edition and by Everyman’s Library as "the standard". L’Estrange (1616-1704) was primarily a Tory journalist, pamphleteer and a surveyor of printing presses and licenser of the press under Charles II and James II. Those duties did not however prevent him from also being a prolific writer and translator. His translation of Aesop was extremely popular in its own day, though not without some critics. Some of his contemporaries accused the work of Jacobite tendencies and of being overly politicalized. Those criticisms seem to have stood up far less well to the test of time then the work itself has, its near constant … [Click Below for Full Description]
