BURNET, Thomas.
London: printed by R.N. for Walter Kettilby, , 1692. Small quarto (200 x 155 mm). Contemporary mottled calf (joints skilfully repaired), sides with two-line rules, red speckled edges. Small engraving in the text at p. 181. Endleaves ruled in red and with a few contemporary notes in Latin, Greek and Hebrew (also a few marginal annotations). One tip a little worn, a few short marginal tears and some leaves dog-eared, small wormhole through lower blank margin of gatherings K and L. An attractive copy. First edition of one of the primary works of the natural philosopher and headmaster Thomas Burnet (c.1635-1715), in which he attempted "to demonstrate that his theory of the earth was also compatible with what could be known of ancient accounts of creation" (ODNB). "Burnet's stunning theory of earth formation was an attempt to twist the arm of the Bible's creation story until it submitted to scientific knowledge. That story's pivotal event, the great deluge, played a central role in Burnet's theory since it completely changed the face of the earth and turned a perfectly smooth spherical paradise into the 'fallen' earth as we know it" (Urs App, The Cult of Emptiness: The Western Discovery of Buddhist Thought and the Invention of Oriental Philosophy, 2012, chapter 15). However, the book caused a storm of controversy in Britain and on the continent and it marked the end of Burnet's career as a public author; he even "instructed its publisher, Walter Kettilby, not to reprint, abridge, or translate the book" (ODNB). Weise, Christian.
(Leipzig), Johann Friedrich Gleditsch, 1692. [Click Below for Full Description]

[Du Bosc, Jacques]
London: Printed for Joseph Watts, 1692. First English language edition. Later full sheep with red morocco label to spine. Light rubbing to extremities; in all square and tight. Collating [10], xix, [3], 304: complete, including frontis. Internally a clean copy, with text block only mildly toned and some offsetting to front and rear leaves. Top edge trimmed a bit close, but with no loss to running title or page numbers. Ownership signature of Jenkin Williams to title page. The first appearance in English of Du Bosc's L'Honneste Femme, it is scarce institutionally and in trade. ESTC reports 14 copies at libraries (10 of these in North America); currently the only copy on the market, only 1 complete copy has appeared at auction in the past half century, the other two being defective. The Querelle des Femmes (the Woman Question) was a debate on women's status that raged across Europe and England through the 16th to 18th century, depicted at times in drama and literature but most often enacted through broadsides, pamphlets, and tracts. While early iterations of the debate focused on whether women were humans or indeed possessed souls, this began to shift as women and their allies used logic to argue against some inherent inferiority in the sex in favor of pointing out the educational disadvantages imposed upon women. France, more progressive in England in regard to women's abilities, offered the present work as a means of promoting their social value. Translated and distributed in English, The Excellent Woman similarly drew attention toward British women's contributions to the … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAYONNE] — VAEZ Abraham
S.l. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

First edition of this comprehensive account of Cromwell's life. Gregorio Leti, an Italian protestant, moved from France to England due to the persecution of protestants under the reign of Louis XIV. There he wrote a number of historical accounts on the rulers of Britain, before eventually fleeing for Holland having insulted Charles II with the publication of his "il Teatro Britannico". It was in Holland that he wrote his Life of Cromwell, all the while trying to repair his shattered relationship with Charles II. Full text is in Italian.

FRANCK, Johann Melchior.
Jenae, Stanno Nisiano, [1692]. DISSERTATION. 4to, pp. 88; some browning in places due to paper stock, but generally clean throughout; in recent blue and white patterned boards, with black morocco label on spine, lettered in gilt. First edition (a second appeared in 1716) of this uncommon Jena dissertation on the laws surrounding cruelty, principally domestic violence. Franck examines what is meant by the term saevitia, and discusses the use of anger as a defence for violence, before dealing in detail with the laws surrounding various cases of cruelty: husband against wife, father against child, householder against servant, and finally, away from the domestic setting, violence of conquerers against the conquered. The common thread, of course, is that of the perpetrators' being in a position of power over the victims. Franck examines the state of German law on these questions, and proposes some amendments. OCLC records just one copy in North America, at Columbia Law Library. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

WATSON, Thomas
London: for Thomas Parkurst, at the Bible and Three Crowns, 1692. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. Thomas Watson was a 17th-century Puritan preacher who is best remembered for his numerous sermons preached regarding the Westminster Shorter Catechism. However, his life and sermons were not without controversy. He was imprisoned for his involvement in the plot to restore Charles II to the English crown and was barred from preaching for many of his nonconformist views. His portfolio of sermons he preached on the Westminster Catechism were published as one extensive collection. This 1692 edition of these sermons was published in Thomas Parkhurst in London and has long sense been an excellent example of Puritan practical theology. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Click Below for Full Description]

L'ESTRANGE, Sir Roger
London: for R. Sare, T. Sawbridge, B. Took, M. Gillyflower, 1692. I am limited to 12 photos on eBay, but I have many more photos on my website...just ask. "A doubtful friend is worse than a certain enemy. Let a man be one thing or the other, and we then know how to meet him." ― Aesop, Aesop's Fables Aesop's fables have been printed for centuries and include some of the most famous fables and tales of all time. Originating sometime in the 6th- to 7th-century BC, these tales have appeared in popular culture for well over 2000 years in the form of books, plays, songs, and visual media. This incredibly rare, 1692 first edition printing of fables includes famous tales by Aesop, Barlandus, Avianus, Abstemius, and Poggius edited by Roger L'Estrange. According to Muir, this edition is thought to the first appearance of l'Estrange's fables in English! Perhaps the DNB's note on this work is the most telling: "Simple and somewhat racy in style, L Estrange s edition was continuously reprinted, helping to popularize both Aesop and the genre of fables among children. The most extensive collection of fables in existence, this compilation also includes a biography of Aesop.". [Attributes: First Edition]

Fore-edge has some red publisher's stains. 620pp. 20pp. 427pp. Like new exterior. Very mild foxing/browning to multiple pages.
