L ESTRANGE, Sir Roger
London: for R. Sare, T. Sawbridge, B. Took, M. Gillyflower, A. & J. Churchil, and J. Hindmarsh, 1692. 1692 1st ed Aesop's Fables AESOP English Folklore Estrange Mythology Barlandus"A doubtful friend is worse than a certain enemy. Let a man be one thing or the other, and we then know how to meet him." ― Aesop, Aesop's FablesAesop's fables have been printed for centuries and include some of the most famous fables and tales of all time. Originating sometime in the 6th- to 7th-century BC, these tales have appeared in popular culture for well over 2000 years in the form of books, plays, songs, and visual media. This incredibly rare, 1692 first edition printing of fables includes famous tales by Aesop, Barlandus, Avianus, Abstemius, and Poggius edited by Roger L'Estrange. According to Muir, this edition is thought to the first appearance of l'Estrange's fables in English! Perhaps the DNB's note on this work is the most telling:"Simple and somewhat racy in style, L Estrange s edition was continuously reprinted, helping to popularize both Aesop and the genre of fables among children. The most extensive collection of fables in existence, this compilation also includes a biography of Aesop."Item number: #9624 Price: $1500L'ESTRANGE, Sir RogerFables, of Aesop and other eminent mythologists: with morals and reflexionsLondon: printed for R. DEIDIER, ABBÉ.
, . . Jähns, p. 2751; Jordan 0846; Sloos, Warfare 08109; for Deidier: NBG XIII, col. 371. Revised third edition of an extensive manual on the science of fortification, written by a professor of mathematics at the artillery school at La Fère. In this richly illustrated book, the author describes the construction, attack and defence of both regular and irregular fortresses, according to the methods of various authors including Vauban, Coehoorn, Deville and Pagan. Deidier's treatment of the science of fortification is highly methodical, for instance making a distinction between attacking places by surprise, by force or by famine and even devoting a section (with an illustration) to "the attack on a fort surrounded by marshes which can only be approached from the dykes or causeways" (p. 269). This third edition adds two short accounts of the Sieges of Namur (1692) and Lille (1708).Binding worn at the extremities with the top of the spine damaged, text slightly browned and with some spots, a small tear in plate 31; a good copy.

Alexis Hubert JAILLOT (1632 - 1712)
Fine map of Africa with a decorative title and scale cartouche. Alexis-Hubert Jaillot (1632-1712), was a French cartographer. He joined the Sanson heirs and redrew Nicolas Sanson's maps on a larger scale. Giovanni Battista CINGOLANI
Rara. Uncommom map from "Il Mercurio Geografico" published in Rome by Giacomo de Rossi.
'Atlas Nouveau' (1674), sea-atlas ' Le Neptune François' (1693). This plate is from the newly engraved Dutch counterfeited edition of the ' Atlas Nouveau', published by Pieter Mortier in Amsterdam. GARNIER, Jardinier du Roi
Paris: Charles de Sercy, 1692. 12mo. Contemporary vellum. 4 ff., 285, [7] pp. Rare first edition of this early treatise on the vegetable garden, very likely a source of information for John Evelyn according to Fussell ("Old English Farming Books from Fitzherbert to Tull 1523 to 1730"). This is an excellent copy in original, unsophisticated condition. The first half of the work concerns the layout of the vegetable garden, the soil, watering, etc.; the second half discusses cultivation and requirements of particular vegetables, as well as on herbs and salad vegetables; documented is the cultivation on growing asparagus, artichoke, absinthe (sic), basil, fennel, red currants, strawberries, melons, muscat, turnips, pumpkin, sage, artichokes, and much more. Published anonymously, the work is generally attributed to Garnier, le Jardinier du Roi (cf. Barbier III, col. 521) although Pierre Morin has also been proposed.  Following the Preface is a 1692 "Certificate" by [Gilles] Ballon, Director of the Royal Gardens, who writes that he has read a manuscript entitled "Traite de la Culture des Orangers & Citronniers, des Figuiers, & des Jardins Potagers." That these three important works were first issued separately by Charles de Sercy in 1692 is apparently recorded here for the first time. Scarce, with no examples of this first edition in auction records for last half century. Not in Hunt.
