DEIDIER, Abbé.
XIV, [2], 336, [4] pp.Revised third edition of an extensive manual on the science of fortification, written by a professor of mathematics at the artillery school at La Fère. In this richly illustrated book, the author describes the construction, attack and defence of both regular and irregular fortresses, according to the methods of various authors including Vauban, Coehoorn, Deville and Pagan. Deidier's treatment of the science of fortification is highly methodical, for instance making a distinction between attacking places by surprise, by force or by famine and even devoting a section (with an illustration) to "the attack on a fort surrounded by marshes which can only be approached from the dykes or causeways" (p. 269). This third edition adds two short accounts of the Sieges of Namur (1692) and Lille (1708).With stamps and a few contemporary(?) annotations. Binding worn at the extremities, text slightly browned and with some spots; a good copy.l Jähns, p. 2751; Jordan 0846; Sloos, Warfare 08109; for Deidier: NBG XIII, col. 371.

DAHURON, René.
pp. 261-280.An unrecorded Italian translation of a French treatise on the pruning and grafting of the limbs of fruit trees, first published as Traité de la taille des arbres, & de la maniere de les bien elever (Celle, André Holwein, 1692), with 12 engraved illustrations from 3 copperplates that depict trees and methods how to graft them. The Hunt Library catalogue mistakenly describes the second French edition (Nouveau traité, Paris 1696, illustrated with woodcuts) as the first edition and notes that this is "a rare little work, not listed in any of the larger botanical collections so far as we can find." The present Italian translation after the first edition appears to be even rarer.Dahuron was gardener to Georg Wilhelm, Duke of Braunschweig-Lüneburg at Celle from 1690 to 1701 and then to Wilhelm I, King of Prussia at Potsdam. The present Italian translation appeared in 1698 together with an Italian Compendio of Jean de la Quintinye, Instruction pour les Jardins (Paris 1690) as Il Giardiniero Francese, overo Trattato del Tagliare gl'Alberi da Frutto con la Maniera di ben Allevarli (Venice, Girolamo Albrizzi, 1698). The present edition seems to have been published at about the same time, but as the last(?) treatise in a 280-page folio. The treatise collates 2mo: 2H4 2I6 = 10 ll., with a notice on fol. 2I6v of Antonio Maria Salvini, Discorsi Accademici ... (Florence, Giuseppe Manni, 1695): the notice mentions the death of Francesco Redi (1626-1697). The present edition of the treatise therefore seems likely to have been published in 1698, perhaps in the proceedings of one o … [Click Below for Full Description]

BAYLE, Pierre, Henri Basnage de Beauval
Henry Desbordes / Reinier Leers, (Amsterdam / Rotterdam, 1692. A collection of 17 loose bound volumes (and one additional damaged volume). 24mos. Illustrated with woodcuts and a few in-text engravings. Bound in contemporary calf, gilt spines with raised bands, marbled endpapers, edges sprinkled red. The joints are partially split at the spine ends, some splaying and a few modest stains to the boards, overall very good. An important journal of literary criticism and philosophical commentary, edited and largely written by Pierre Bayle (under the title *Nouvelles de la République des Lettres*) and by Henri Basnage (under the title *Histoire des Ouvrages des Sçavans*). Both Bayle and Basnage were French Protestants who fled to the Dutch Republic in order to teach and publish the journal free from French censorship. It was during this period that Bayle completed his *Dictionnaire Historique et Critique*, the single most popular work of the 18th Century. The rigors attendant upon this work and his editorship of the *Nouvelles* (one of the first of the learned journals), contributed to a breakdown he suffered in 1687, whereupon Basnage, Bayle's close friend and intellectual colleague in Rotterdam, founded and edited the *Histoire* as the sequel to the *Nouvelles*. Under Bayle and Basnage, the journal served as a forum for the dissemination of the modern philosophical ideas of Descartes, Leibniz, Locke, and Spinoza. The collection consists of 18 monthly issues of *Nouvelles de la République des Lettres* dating from May 1685 - February 1688 (bound in nine volumes); and 17 monthly is … [Click Below for Full Description]

[TYRRELL, James]
London: printed, and are to be sold by Richard Baldwin, near the Oxford-Arms in Warwick-Lane. 1692. 8vo., (98) + 396 + (4)pp., including the imprimatur leaf (with repair but no loss of printed surface) and two* advertisement leaves, minor general paper toning, early signature of D. Campbell> at foot of title-page and another old signature crossed through in upper margin, contemporary calf, most appropriately rebacked to match, with raised bands and red morocco label gilt. A very good copy. First edition. James Tyrrell (1642-1718), a lawyer by education, wrote works of political philosophy and history. He was a close friend of John Locke and shared many of his views, and collaborated with him on political writings. Tyrrell's Brief disquisition> (1692), 'a shortened translation of Cumberland's De legibus naturae,> which received Cumberland's approbation, was written some little while before it was published for the use of his friends and relatives and received the approval of Robert Boyle. Tyrrell refers with admiration to John Wilkins' Treatise of Natural Religion,> Henry More's Enchiridion ethicum> and Locke's Essay concerning Human Understanding.> The book contains as a separate section Cumberland's arguments against Hobbes.' TYRRELL, James.
London: Richard Baldwin,, 1692. Octavo (180 x 108 mm). Contemporary speckled calf, red morocco label, raised bands, twin blind fillet to boards, broad flower-head and leaf spray roll along joints in blind, edges speckled red. Bound with the imprimantur and the two leaves of ads at rear but without the errata leaf. Small ownership signature to front pastedown. Short splits to heads of joints, two wormholes to tails of joints, closed tear to fore margin of signature O1, not affecting text, occasional light spotting. A very good copy. First edition, possibly early state as this copy does not include the errata leaf and leaf f1 is not cancelled and replaced with a bifolium, as is the case for the copy collated in ESTC. A Brief Disquisition of the Law of Nature is an abridged translation by political theorist and historian James Tyrrell of Richard Cumberland's treatise heralding English utilitarianism, De legibus naturae disquisitio philosophica (1671). Tyrrell's adaptation juxtaposed Cumberland's theories with John Locke's and further developed Cumberland's criticism of Thomas Hobbes. De legibus naturae argued that "science and reason could support the notion of a divinely ordained natural law, rather than subverting it as the work of Hobbes appeared to suggest" (ODNB). Cumberland's discussion has been described as "distinctly 'modern' because he arrives at his conclusions without discussion of scripture, and he generates ethical norms without a discussion of the afterlife. He also deployed recent scientific discoveries to back up his ethical claims and discussed morality in … [Click Below for Full Description]

With woodcut coat of arms on title-page, 2 double-page engraved maps and 1 engraved plate. Contemporary calf, gold-tooled spine. [4], 114 pp. Rare first edition of an extensive account of several scientific observations made to improve the astronomical and geographical information on regions in China and India. The work contains several reports on China and Siam, made by various Jesuits, including father Richaud who comments on the astronomy and calendar of the Siamese, and François Noël who calculated the longitude and latitude of several villages in China. Other reports concern, among others, Cassini's tables of Jupiter's satellites, Tartary at the frontier with China, a journey from the Junnam province in China to the city of Ava as it was made by some 30,000 Chinese fleeing from Tartary, and observations on a comet that had appeared in 1689. All these reports were collected and provided with commentaries by father Thomas Gouye (1650-1725). The two engraved maps depict a part of India, one showing the course of the river Ganges and the other the course of the river Ava. The engraved plate depicts the different letters and numbers of the Bengali language. With a tiny inscription (shelf mark?) on title-page. The Querelle des Femmes (the Woman Question) was a debate on women's status that raged across Europe and England through the 16th to 18th century, depicted at times in drama and literature but most often enacted through broadsides, pamphlets, and tracts. While early iterations of the debate focused on whether women were humans or indeed possessed souls, this began to shift as women and their allies used logic to argue against some inherent inferiority in the sex in favor of pointing out the educational disadvantages imposed upon women. France, more progressive in England in regard to women's abilities, offered the present work as a means of promoting their social value. Translated and distributed in English, The Excellent Woman similarly drew attention toward British women's contributions to the … [Click Below for Full Description]

AUDIGER, Maître d'Hôtel. fl. 1692
Paris: [L. Roulland for] M. Brunet, 1692. Contemporary sprinkled calf, spine and red morocco label gilt (crown and base neatly repaired), edges sprinkled red and brown. First Edition, a classic for nearly a century. Audiger fixes a template of domestic economy and management of a grand household in late 17th-century France. He enumerates each office from doorkeeper, coachman and groom to governess, chamberlain and estate manager, specifying the duties of each (and wages for some). He discusses purchasing goods and dealing with merchants, codifies the reception and seating of visitors according to their rank, and calculates the average annual costs of operation - all based on his experience working for the Countess de Soissons (niece of Mazarin) and then the Colbert.  "CELEBRATED IN THE HISTORY OF GASTRONOMY" (Livres en bouche, tr.), the text reflects the fashion to simplify the service of soups, main dishes, roast meats and sweets and to integrate cheese into the desserts. This style of dining is illustrated in the six folding plates, which show the placement on the table of six, twelve, eighteen and twenty-four courses. Audiger was among the first to introduce the drinking of chocolate, tea and coffee to France and to promote iced foods and drinks and ice cream north of the Alps. In the final eighty pages he details the preparation of distilled liqueurs, spiced and herbed drinks, custards, powdered sugar, infused wines, syrups, jams and jellies.  Of considerable interest, his TWENTY-PAGE AUTOBIOGRAPHY recounts the long and arduous path to a royal privilege for his soft … [Click Below for Full Description]

First edition of one of the primary works of the natural philosopher and headmaster Thomas Burnet (c.1635-1715), in which he attempted "to demonstrate that his theory of the earth was also compatible with what could be known of ancient accounts of creation" (ODNB). "Burnet's stunning theory of earth formation was an attempt to twist the arm of the Bible's creation story until it submitted to scientific knowledge. That story's pivotal event, the great deluge, played a central role in Burnet's theory since it completely changed the face of the earth and turned a perfectly smooth spherical paradise into the 'fallen' earth as we know it" (Urs App, The Cult of Emptiness: The Western Discovery of Buddhist Thought and the Invention of Oriental Philosophy, 2012, chapter 15). However, the book caused a storm of controversy in Britain and on the continent and it marked the end of Burnet's career as a public author; he even "instructed its publisher, Walter Kettilby, not to reprint, abridge, or translate the book" (ODNB). Weise, Christian.
(Leipzig), Johann Friedrich Gleditsch, 1692. [Click Below for Full Description]

ESTC reports 14 copies at libraries (10 of these in North America); currently the only copy on the market, only 1 complete copy has appeared at auction in the past half century, the other two being defective.
