- These two views illustrate the Dutch attack on the Portuguese city of Olinda in 1630. - Throughout most of the 17th century Portugal and Holland had a commercial agreement in which the Portuguese colonies in the New World produced sugar, and the Dutch distributed it across Europe using their vast commercial network. - After the kingdoms of Portugal and Spain merged, the Dutch lost their distribution monopoly and created the West Indian Company in 1621. - Shortly thereafter the Dutch began its attack on Pernambuco, first at Salvador and then at Olinda. - At top is a view of Povo (which later became Recife) and Olinda as seen from the sea. - At bottom is a large bird's-eye view of the region filled with ships, some engaged in battle, and the city of Povo already engulfed in flames.

PORTAL, Paulus.
Amsterdam, Timotheus ten Hoorn. 1690. 8vo. With an engraved portrait of the author facing the title page and 8 full-page engraved plates of embryos and a placenta. Contemporary vellum, purple library stamp on the front board. [1 blank], [23], 342, [7], [1 blank] pp. First and only Dutch edition of an important treatise on obstetrics, which discusses several ways an obstetrician could help a mother during labour. It was written in French (first French edition 1685) by Paul Portal (1630-1703), a renowned obstetrician in Paris, and translated into Dutch by Pieter Adriaansz, Gomer van Bortel and Pieter Guenellon, who are all also physicians and obstetricians. Portal sketches these quite theoretical knowledge in an anecdotical manner, because he also tells some stories from his own experience, such as women who died during pregnancy or stories from miscarriages and how he handled them. These practical examples must reinforce his statements, just like the two approbations at the end of the preface, one from the school of medicine in Paris and one from the "sworn surgeons" in Paris. This reflects the fact that Portals obstetrics handbook met the needs of both theoretists and practicioners concerning obstetrical problems that were very common in those days. With the same purple library stamp as on the front board on the back of the author's portrait. Some stains on the vellum, somewhat dust soiled, one leaf (pp. 337-338) somewhat lo … [Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Leti-- Gregorio (1630-1701)
[Click Below for Full Description]

Holland - Visscher, Nicholas. (1618 - 1679).
Amsterdam, Visscher, [c.], 1690. Original hand-coloured engraving. Plate Size: 56 cm x 74.5 cm. Sheet Size: 60.5 cm x 78 cm. Original and rare map. In good+ condition. Some minor tears to margin. A few professional repairs to reverse. Some minor abrasions to map. Interesting and detailed large map of The Netherlands from Hertogdom Brabant in the south to Friesland in the north. The political subdivisions are also highlighted and the historic placenames, regions and provinces - such as 'T Land Van Utrecht' - are included in Dutch. The map is crowded with topographical detail, showing the location of rivers, hills, towns and the transportation network criss-crossing Holland. The precariousness of Dutch security is evident given the myriad of fortified towns and cities across the map. The sandbanks of the shallow Zuiderzee (De Zuyder Zee) can be seen. Haarlemmer Meer and Leydsche Meer are also identified on the map - much of this was drained and reclaimed in the 19th and 20th centuries. The West Frisian Islands of Texel, Elieland and Der Schelling are also included. A scarce, late 17th Century map of the Dutch Republic as it bathed in the rich, late glow of its Golden Age. The map was published around the period William of Orange, Prince of Orange and Stadtholder of Holland, Zeeland, Utrecht, Guelders and Overijssel in the Dutch Republic … [Click Below for Full Description]

Modern half maroon goatskin morocco. [2] pp. plus 8 double-page engraved plates. Rare first and only edition of an architectural print series of 3 elevations and 5 plans of the stately manor house "Huis te Nigtevecht" also known as "De Nes", designed by the Amsterdam architect Herbert Kramer (d. 1705). The house nearly fills a small square island in the Vecht river, near Vreeland, southeast of Amsterdam. One plan includes the surrounding water and the drawbridge that gave access to the house, and another shows the roof. The house was built in 1687 for Pieter Reael (1650-1701), Lord of Nigtevecht, after his 1683 marriage with Maria Eleonora Huydecoper (1658-1706), the daughter of the magistrate, burgomaster of Amsterdam and humanist Balthasar Huydecoper. Huis te Nigtevecht was torn down in 1829/30, so the present print series gives us our best record of its original form.
