Bidloo, Govard (anatomist) and Gerard de Lairesse (artist
Hardcover. Broadside, 305 x 470 (visible image size), professionally matted and framed. Very good. ¶ An extraordinary 17th-century anatomical engraving, justly celebrated by anatomists and artists alike for over 300 years; the Surrealists found it particularly fascinating. ¶ "This stark dissection -- with ragged flesh fully displayed and hands bound with a cord -- signals a commitment to a higher level of realism. To our eyes, the picture may suggest a distressing indifference to, or even pleasure in, human suffering" (Dream Anatomy, National Library of Medicine, 2003). ¶ "Govard Bidloo was born in Amsterdam in 1649 and became professor of anatomy at The Hague from 1688 to 1694, when he took the same position at Leyden. He was later appointed the physician of William III of England, who was originally Dutch, until the King's death in 1702. In that year, Bidloo returned to Leyden to take his old position until his death there in 1713. ¶ "Best known as an anatomist, Govard Bidloo's most famous work was his monumental Anatomia humani corporis published in Amsterdam in 1685, containing 107 copperplate engravings. Like so many large and expensive anatomical atlases of the time, the work was not a financial success, and in 1690 he published a Dutch translation entitled, Ontleding des menschelyken lichaams, using the same plates. The illustrations in Bidloos' work were drawn by Gerard de Lairesse (1640-1711) and engraved by Abraham Blooteling (1640-1690) and Peter van Gunst (1659?-1724?)" -- source: National L … [Click Below for Full Description]

Papin, Denis; Bernoulli, Jacob (Jakob)
Grossium & J.F. Gledoitschium, Leipzig, 1690. FIRST EDITION OF PAPIN'S DESCRIPTION OF HIS INVENTION OF THE STEAM ENGINE & A "MILESTONE PAPER IN THE HISTORY OF CALCULUS" by Jacob Bernoulli (Kiranyaz, Pattern Recognition, 19). PAPIN: Denis Papin was a French mathematician, physicist known for his invention of the steam digester, forerunner of the pressure cooker, and of the steam engine. "One of the features of his 'digester' was a pressure-relief valve, consisting of a small piston held in place by a weight that could move up and release steam when the pressure got too high. This piston valve gave Papin the idea for a steam-driven piston engine, for which he had constructed a model by 1690" (Linda Hall Library). Papin's paper offered here details both his invention and the model he constructed. "Papin powered his engine with a cylinder similar to his pressure cooker, which he attached to a piston connected to a cord over two pulleys. He filled this cylinder with a "small quantity" of water and lit a fire beneath it. The resultant steam drove the piston upward, where a latch held it in place. He then removed the fire, causing the steam to condense and form a vacuum. This pulled the piston downward, which engaged the rope over the pulleys. The device could lift 60 pounds once a minute, but Papin believed a larger machine could raise as much as 8,000 pounds four feet per minute. This device was nearly identical to later engines that fueled the Industrial Revolution" (Crown, The Digester, AOb, July 18, 2018). The story as to why Papin's steam engine often gets left out of the st … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hoogheemraadschap Woerden - Vingboons, De Wit, 1690
[Click Below for Full Description]

Haarlem - Gregorio Leti, c. 1690
[Click Below for Full Description]

[Click Below for Full Description]

Sir Thomas Browne
ont Charles Browne : London. 1690, First edition. Hardcover, with dust jacket. Book, A very scarce, first edition copy of Sir Thomas Browne's important treatise, from the library of noted antiquarian, and lawyer Robert S Pirie. This work is a literary elaboration of a clinical report of a real patient who died of phthisis under Sir Thomas Browne's care. It is believed that the patient is Robert Loveday, a talented young author who translated part of La Calprenede's 'Cleopatre' and published it as 'Hymen's Praeludia, or Love's Masterpiece'. The friend to whom this letter has been written, is probably Sir John Pettus. Scholars believe that this work was written at the same time as Browne's 'Hydrotaphia', but there were various political and personal reasons why Browne did not wish to publish an intimate study of his patient during his lifetime. The author's name is written as 'Thomas Brown' to the title page. In marbled wraps and held in a custom chemise. Keynes notes in his bibliography of Sir Thomas Browne, that this work is excessively rare and was printed by the author's son. Keynes cites Sir William Osler who notes this is the most uncommon of all Browne's works. Keynes notes seven copies recorded in all, making this extremely scarce. With the bookplate to the front pastedown of Robert S Pirie. With Pirie's pencilled note to the inside front cover of the chemise: 'The Dr Eli Mosckowitz copy but not included in Sotheby's sales in 1964. It was apparently overlooked by them and turned up with the dregs of his library in a New York sale, RSP'. This copy was sold in the estat … [Click Below for Full Description]
