        Calabria Citeriore ed Vlteriore

Napoli 1691 - Acquaforte e bulino, 1691.

Planisfero Del Mondo Vecchio; C.1691 Coronelli Map of the Eastern Hemisphere

Vincenzo Coronelli, Venice - Map. Engraving with hand color. Sheet measures 19.5" x 26.25" This lovely map of the Eastern Hemisphere was issued by Vincenzo Coronelli in circa 1691. The map covers the continents of Africa, Europe, Asia and Australia in detail and includes the discoveries made by Abel Tasman in Australia. The map is cartographically based on Coronelli's large gores from 1688, which were themselves derived from the manuscript globes constructed for Louis XI in 1683. An early mapping of the coastline of Antarctica is also included. Dedication to Senator Andrea Marcello appear in the top left with his coat of arms in the top right. The lower corners include explanations. A series of concentric rings surround the map noting distance, eclipse, climate zones, and astronomical information. The 12 zodiac signs are noted on the outer edges of the circle. The map has wear along centerfold and verso repair and fill near the bottom with loss of a few letters in the south pole and margin fill. Plate cracks visible. Minor foxing. Unusual coloring. Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718) was a Franciscan priest and renowned mathematician and cartographer. He was appointed official Cosmographer to the Venetian Republic in 1685 and founded the world's earliest geographic society, L'Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. He was known best for his globes, which he made for prominent rulers such as Louis XIV and the Duke of Parma. This map is an excellent example of his work.

Trajecti Ad Rhenum Ex Officina Francisci Halma, Academiae Typographi 1691 - Later leather binding with stamped design on front, five rolled bands on spine with gilt title in red square. Some wear on edges and corners , possible reinforcement of front hinge. Interior toning though not heavy. Ornate, armorial bookplate on front pastedown from the House of Abercairny. More modern bookplate on rear pastedown. Book is square but front hinge is suspicious. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 135, 240, 120 pages; This book is in Latin and I'm not sure of the translation. I think the book deals with the origins of laws but I'm unsure of "Pomponii." Few copies of this work are listed on-line. One that has been scanned was owned by John Adams.         Breviarium Theologicum

1691. POLMANO, Joanne. Breviarium Theologicum, Continens Definitiones, Descriptiones, & Explicationes Terminorum Theologicorum. Rouen: Richardum Lallemant, 1691. Thick 12mo, contemporary full mottled calf, front cover stamped with coat-of-arms of France in gilt, rebacked with elaborately gilt-decorated spine laid down, raised bands, red morocco spine label, marbled endpapers. $2800.Later edition of this French breviary in Latin, handsomely bound in contemporary calf-gilt with the Bourbon royal arms of Louis XV “le bien-aimé” tooled in gilt on the front cover. In the year 1744, while hastening from his conquests in Flanders during the war of the Austrian Succession to assist Alsace, Louis XV was felled by a malady at Metz which threatened to cut short his reign. According to the Abrégé Chronologique de l'Histoire de France, ""At the news of this, Paris, all in terror, seemed a city taken by storm: the churches resounded with supplications and groans; the prayers of priests and people were every moment interrupted by their sobs: and it was from an interest so dear and tender that this surname of Bien-aimé fashioned itself, a title higher still than all the rest which this great Prince has earned"" (Paris, 1775). Louis XV spent five days in October, 1744 recuperating from this illness in Strasbourg. Despite the resounding victory shortly thereafter at Fontenoy on 11 May 1745, Louis XV's reputation from then on was in decline. His philandering continued to grow after 1744, tarnishing his reputation among his subjects and undermining the myth of the ""well loved"" king assiduously cultivated by the crown. The reputation of the monarchy never recovered from the damage done to it by Louis XV, causing him apparently to utter the apochryphal words, ""Après moi le déluge."" The Breviarum is essentially a religious dictionary, supplying definitions and descriptions for theological terminology. First published in 1653. Text in Latin. Owner ink stamp on title page; early owner signature to title page and front flyleaf.Text clean and fine; light expert restoration to 18th-century French armorial binding.

Gröste Denckwürdigkeiten der Welt oder so-gennante Relationes Curiosæ...

Hamburg: Thomas von Wiering, 1683-, 1691. Five volumes, quarto, 196 engraved and woodcut plates (some folding), title-pages printed in red and black, woodcut textual illustrations and initials; bound in contemporary vellum, titles lettered on spine. A fine set of Happel's remarkable book of wonders, an endlessly informative series filled with the newest and most sensational news from around the world: 'a miscellany of popular information, containing short notices of curious phenomena in every part of the globe, as well as of curious historical events. The notices of American matters are numerous in all the volumes' (Sabin).Among the many wonders here described, the double-page map of the world showing ocean currents is particularly notable. Showing the entire globe from Greenland in the north to the "Süd-Land", this map is a good instance of popular interest in the mapping of the world, including the putative outline of Terra Australis: 'an important early representation of oceanographic phenomena. It illustrates Kircher's idea that there are chasms in the depths of the sea into which the water flows, then percolates through the earth and up to the tops of mountains' (National Maritime Museum, Greenwich).Happel (1647-1690) was a writer and journalist, and one of the most-widely read novelists of his time. His so-called "endless novels" with their picaresque attention to detail relied on his omnivorous fascination with social history, scientific discovery, and other novelties from around the world. This remarkable collection of "curiosities" was probably his most significant historical work, and is derived from all manner of sources including the newspapers and journals of the day; his voracious reading meant that the material represents a real snapshot of contemporary interests. This lavishly illustrated book was a sort of print version of the aristocratic collections of curiosities, with fulsome descriptions of natural history ranging from the scientific to the invented. It would be impossible to list the various subjects discussed and illustrated here, but they include the pyramids of Egypt, the tower of Babel, fossils and insects, Pharo, Babylon, mermaids, a bull-fight, Oliver Cromwell, the oracle of Delphi, Cardinal Mazarin, whaling among icebergs, and the fall of Jerusalem. Two of the more exotic plates depict a Brazilian giant devouring a man in gruesome detail, and a scene of Hottentots scoffing fresh entrails.Exact details on collation do vary, with Faber du Faur suggesting 198 and Dünnhaupt 194: the present copy, with 196, is evidently as issued, and represents an appropriate figure for such a monumental work. The first volume is the second edition, the remaining four are first editions, as with Faber du Faur's set. A few plates trimmed, some browning and spotting, but generally a very attractive set.

Planisfero Del Mondo Nuovo 1691 Coronelli Map of the Western Hemisphere (California Island and Antarctica)

Venice: Vincenzo Coronelli, 1691. unbound. Map. Engraving with hand color. Sheet measures 18" x 24". This is a gorgeous map of the Western Hemisphere by Vincenzo Coronelli. Issued in the 1691 issue of "Atlante Veneto" (although the title page carries the date 1690, the atlas was published in 1691), which was designed as a continuation of Blaeu's "Atlas Major". The map is cartographically based on Coronelli's large gores from 1688, which were themselves derived from the manuscript globes constructed for Louis XI in 1683.<br><br>In North America, French Louisiana takes up most of the region at the expense of British Colonies. The American West notes the Native American tribe of the Apaches. Although one of the most accurate depictions of the Great Lakes in the 17th century is shown here, the Mississippi empties into the Gulf of Mexico far west from its actual location. California appears as an island.<br><br> Insular California was first mentioned in the early 16th century. Although contrary evidence from various explorers was available by the 17th century that California was in fact a peninsula, cartographers remained divided on the subject and California continued to appear on maps as an island.<br><br>Further north the semi-mythical Stretto d'Anian appears. This Strait, which is today known as the Bering Strait first appeared in the journals of Marco Polo and went on to become associated with the mythical Northwest Passage. Terra di Jesso, the mythical land bridge believed to connect Asia with Alaska, appearing to the west with Giaponi further west.<br><br>In South America, the mythical lakes of Parima as well as Xarayes, both believed to be connected to El Dorado, make an appearance. In the Pacific, the discoveries of Abel Tasmen are shown with the early mapping of the coastlines of New Zealand and Van Diemen's Land. A notation near New Zealand incorrectly states that it was discovered by the Dutch in 1684. Speculative mapping of a large landmass to the south hints at a mythical Southern Continent.<br><br>Dedication to Senator Andrea Marcello appear in the top left with his coat of arms in the top right. The lower corners include explanations. A series of concentric rings surround the map noting distance, eclipse, climate zones, and astronomical information. The 12 zodiac signs are noted on the outer edges of the circle. This is the first state of the map, identified by the zodiacs appearing without illustrations. The map is in good condition with minor wear along the original centerfold and minor foxing.<br><br>Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718) was a Franciscan priest and renowned mathematician and cartographer. Upon his return, de la Loubère made a precise description of his travels, as he had been requested by Louis XIV, published under the titleDu Royaume de Siam. De la Loubère also brought to France from his Siamese travels a very simple method for creating n-odd magic squares, known as the "Siamese method" or the "de la Loubère method", which apparently was initially brought from Surat, India by another Frenchman by the name of M. Vincent, who was sailing on the return ship with de la Loubère. This volume contains a chapter of the "Jeu des Echecsw of Chinois". The panels show, inter alia, an illustration for Echiquier's Chinois and a coconut tree.Lothar Maximilian Lorenz Schmid (10 May 1928 – 18 May 2013) was a German chess grandmaster.

Planisphero Del Mondo Vecchio Maior Del Mondo Nuovo Descritto...

Venice: circa, 1691. Engraved map, 450 x 615 mm., mounted. A very fine map of the Eastern Hemisphere by the great Venetian cartographer Coronelli, which combines 'the most up-to-date cartographic information with elegant engraving and restrained accompanying decoration' (Shirley).Coronelli (1650-1718) was Italy's finest seventeenth-century cartographer, famous for a pair of globes he made for Louis XIV. He was a member of the Franciscan order, of which he became general, and founder of the learned society Accademia Cosmografica degli Argonauti. Coronelli is highly regarded for his tireless efforts of cartographic research. He was involved in the production of some four hundred maps all of which he drew, engraved and printed. This Eastern Hemisphere map features a decorative coat-of-arms and descriptive text with astrological symbols at the side. Australia is reasonably well delineated with the discoveries of Tasman's second voyage taken into account. Notes refer to the discoveries of "Terra de Concordia" (1618), "Terra d'Edels" (1619), "Terra de Lewin" (1622), "Terra di Pietro Nuyts" (1627), as well as the island of "San Francisco" (off the south coast, mapped by Nuyts and Thijssen), as well as generally the "Terra di Diemen" and "Terra di Arnhem". Also marked are the "Rocher de Frederic Outman" (Houtmans Abrolhos, referring to the shoals on which the Batavia wrecked in 1629) and, just to their south, "Isole d'Edels Turtel Duyf" (the Turtle Dove Shoals, mapped by Hessel Gerritsz in 1627).A massive "Terra Australe Incognita" dominates the bottom of the map, but is here little more than a vaguely suggested outline with, to the south-west of Cape Horn, the "Terra de Pappagalli, creduta fauolosa" - the land of the Parrots, thought to be fabulous. Some small repairs, small section of restoration along the old central fold near the Persian Gulf, but in overall good condition.

IV, 934. - First edition. The first part containing 100 anatomicial and surgical observations by Ruysch, and the second part containing the first descriptive account of his famous anatomical museum. Displayed in several rented houses in Amsterdam, the museum was a major attraction for foreign visitors. In 1717, Ruysch sold his collection to Peter the Great for 30,000 guilders. In this text of practical observations in medicine and surgery, Ruysch presents the results of one hundred studies and illustrates many of them with excellent engravings, many of which are undoubtedly enhanced by his injection techniques (H.o.H. 613). Very Good.

The first edition, first issue, of this valuable first hand account of later Recollect missionary in northeastern Canada and New Brunswick, generally considered on of the best descriptions of Indian culture in Canada. Le Clercq provides detailed information on the Micmac Indians of the Gaspe peninsula, based on the twelve years from 1675 to 1686 he spent as a missionary with the tribe. The book also gives the first detailed account of the Gaspe peninsula. The author invented the system of hieroglyphics used to transliterate the Micmac language. "This is an important work, as it gives an account of the later Recollect missions in northeastern Canada and the province of New Brunswick and contains a remarkable record of the labors of missionaries for the conversion of the Gaspe Indians. The author not only records the results of his own missionarly life among the savages inhabiting the banks of the St. Lawrence, but gives a very full and interesting account of their peculiar traits of character, their religious rites, mode of life, etc., before these became modified by contact with civilization" - Church.
