VAIRASSE D'ALAIS Denis.
A Bibliography of Australia and the South Sea Islands, 918).

Leon da Modena
La Haye, Adrian Moetjens, 1682. Kl.-8°., gest. Fronti. (zeigt die Beschneidung eines Jungen)verkehrt eingefügt, 24 Bll., 188 S.; 2 Bll., 166 S., 6 Bll. , OPerg., Deckele fleckig, Fronti u. Titelbl. mit Randläsuren. Letzteres m. Riss (2 cm), innen etwas fleckig. Barbier I, 553 (2. Aufl.). Leopold Voigt, Vienna, 1682. 20 (303 x 200 mm). Large folding plates (525 x 1850 mm, comprising 5 large plates joined together). Contemporary marbled wrappers; cloth folding case. In 1679, Vienna was visited by one of the last big plague epidemics. Fleeing the` city, Emperor Leopold I vowed to erect a marble mercy column if the epidemic would end. A temporary wooden structure was erected in the same year. Three years later, Leopold's vow was renewed. This volume and the large folding plate are commemorating an early conservative design for the memorial column known as "Pestsäule" ("plague column") in Vienna, which was finally inaugurated in High Baroque style in 1693. Morhof, Daniel Georg.
– Beigebunden: Derselbe. Teutsche Gedichte. 4 Bl., 471 S. Kiel, Joachim Reumann, 1682. "He views the literature of all of Western Europe, and it is higly interesting to note his appraisal of the English language, which is negative throughout, and of English literature, which is considerably more favourable. On p. 229 he cites Shakespeare" (Faber du Faur). [Click Below for Full Description]

London, George Wells, 1682. 8vo. (20), 211, (1), 129-487, (1) pp. Contemp. full calf with giltstamped arms of Michel Le Tellier. Leading edges gilt. Edges red. First edition. - Correspondence between the Oratorian Jean Morin (1591-1659) and Cardinal Barberini (and others) regarding the project of Pope Urban VIII to unite all schismatic churches of the orient with the Roman church, in which the learned orientalist Morin was instrumental. As such, this constitutes an early and important attempt to systematically address the relations between the Rome and the Christian communities established in Lebanon, Syria and in the rest of the Middle East, containing valuable observations on the Druze, Copt, and other local religious communities. Several portions printed in Greek, Hebrew, Arabic, and Syriac characters. The editor, R. Simon (1638-1712), has prefixed a Life of Morin which "amounts to a diatribe against not only Morin, but the entire Oratorian Congregation" (cf. Wetzer/W.). - From the library of the French statesman Michel III Le Tellier, marquis de Barbezieux (1603-85), minister of state after Mazarin, Chancellor and Keeper of the Seals of France. London: Printed by J.M. for Henry Faithorn and John Kersey? 1682. - 12mo, pp. (xx), 132. Title within rules, 2 woodcuts in the text. Title a little soiled, several small wormholes in lower inner corner. Contemporary panelled calf, unlettered, some small repairs to head of spine and corners, no front free endpaper, a nice copy. The copy of William Hewson (1739?1774, surgeon and anatomist), with his inscription in the upper corner of the title-page. SOLE EDITION. Probably the first monograph in English on surgery of the head. Yonge was a naval surgeon, who set up in practice in Plymouth when he gave up the sea. He had just performed the operation for an injury of the head outlined in the title above when a local physician, Dr. Durston, asserted that wounds of the brain were always fatal. To prove his error, Yonge published this book, which includes details of the operation in great detail, followed by extracts from and references to 65 earlier authors, five of whom are English. Bound with this copy is Nehemiah Grew?s The Anatomy of Vegetables Begun (London, 1672), lacking the two plates, and James Le Franc?s Corpus Animatum: seu, Tractatus de Anima Animante (London, 1664), an extremely rare book but this copy shaved on the fore-edge of several leaves with loss of letters. Contemporary signature of Henry Sober in all three works. Wing Y43. Cushing Y12. See also The Journal of James Yonge, 1647-1721, Plymouth surgeon. Edited by F. N. L. Poynter (London, 1963).

Glanvill, Joseph
S. Lownds c. 1682, London. Edition : Second and Best Edition, Full contemporary speckled calf boards, expertly rebacked to match. Spine in five compartments of raised bands with gilt title on 2. All edges tinted red. , Joseph Glanville, the ?ablest advocate? of superstition and author of the very popular Saducismus Triumphatus, or full and plain evidence concerning witches and apparitions. ?It was thought to have put the belief in apparitions and witchcraft on an unshakable basis of science and philosophy,? wrote Kittredge. ?No other English work on the subject had a more powerful influence.? Glanville took his M.A. at Oxford in 1658 and ultimately became chaplain to King Charles II. His interest in the occult was fostered by his belief that science could explain the supernatural, and was reinforced by his personal experience of the drummer fiend of Tedworth. Saducismus Triumphatus refuted such disbelievers as John Wagstaffe and John Webster. Glanville?s book achieved its success, not by its reasoning, but by its collection of twenty-six witch ?relations? This ?small collection of the most credible and best attested stories? was written ?to confirm and prove the main subject? that is, the actuality of witchcraft. , Size : 8vo (183x110mm). , P. This revised collected edition represents the first textbook on the subject, containing three earlier treatises: The Anatomy of Vegetables Begun (1672), An Idea of a Phytological History Propounded (1673), and The Comparative Anatomy of Trunks (1675). GrewÂ’s pioneering investigations into how organs and tissues are formed during plant growth led to the conception of the plant as a coordinated developing structure and marked the beginning of efforts to link structure and development. Along with Malpighi, Grew was the first to investigate internal plant anatomy: with the aid of the microscope, he demonstrated that plants have a characteristic ordered inner structure, (illustrated in his accurate and beautiful plates) and that all plant tissues could be broadly divided into “ligneous” (fibro-vascular) and “pithy” (parenchymatous) categories. He showed that the “cells” first observed by Robert Hooke made up the normal structure of the parenchyma, and came very close to recognizing the universal cellular structure of plants. He believed that a plantÂ’s sexual organs were c … [Click Below for Full Description]

Blagraves work was a practical manual for applying astrological principles to everyday needs. It offered advice for when to do just about anything giving 34rules for knowing when to engage in a lawsuit fight a duel or propose marriage. By observing the masculine signs in the heavens it was possible to choose the appropriate moment for begetting a male child. John Cases instructions were attractively simple If thou wantst an heir or a man-child to inherit thy land observe a time when the masculine planets and signs ascend and are in full power and force then take thy female and cast in thy seed and thou shalt have a man-child. Gilbert Burnett and Anthony Horneck
Richard Chiswell, 1682. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good. (2), 12p. Karl Johann Königsmark (1659-1686) "fought in action at Tangier and on his return to England he was favoured by the king and was enough of a gallant at this time to attempt a liaison with and even proffer marriage to Lady Elizabeth Percy, styled countess of Ogle (1667-1722). She was heir to the inheritance of the earls of Northumberland and had been widowed for the first time when not quite fourteen. She was seduced by the count's charms, but Königsmark was considered a very unsuitable match for the heir to one of the great estates of England and so her guardians rebuffed him. Instead she was given to the wealthy Thomas Thynne of Longleat, which angered Königsmark, although the marriage was never consummated and Elizabeth soon absconded to the Netherlands. While Königsmark hoped for an annulment of the marriage, Thynne, anxious to retain Elizabeth's property, sought legal redress and the return of his wife. Königsmark, still feeling the insult of the marriage, planned his vengeance against Thynne. He sent a number of challenges to Thynne through his retainer Captain Christopher Vratz (d. 1682), army officer and murderer, a professional soldier of German origin who had previously served as a mercenary in many of Europe's armies...It was later claimed that Thomas Thynne ignored the many challenges sent by the count and had hired men to kill Königsmark and Vratz. An attack apparently took place, but failed and left Vratz wounded. Soon afterwards Vratz recruited Lieutenant John Stern (1640/41-1682), army offic … [Click Below for Full Description]
