RUSSELL
1682 - in a neat hand, leaving to his wife Anne (née Duke) lands in Elmore and Barnwood, Glos., for life, and then to their unmarried only daughter, "it is my strict order" that any renewals of leases are to be at his wife's charge but in their daughter's name, the daughter is to get immediately "my Toft and piece of Ground . in Little Distaff Lane" with the buildings on it, and "all my share in the good ship the Blessing & her Cargo now on a voyage to Guinea" which she is not to sell "till Mr. Thomas Deane my kinsman doth . part with his share or the Proprietor[s] do make dividend or put her to sale", also to his wife the £1000 secured by a bond to his father-in-law on their marriage, to be found partly from selling a lease from the Bishop of Chichester "of three houses in Whites Alley near Chancery Lane", this in lieu of "her right to the third part of my Estate which perhaps she may otherwise claim by a Custom of the City of London", with the probate, 4 sides folio and 2 sides blank, London, 18th May - 5th August browned but very clear, blank margin of first side mended with old paper, guard strip on blank sixth side Russell asks, if he dies in London, to be buried at St. Mildred, Bread Street, which is across Cannon Street along from Little Distaff Lane. The street was renamed Distaff Lane when the main line of the latter was absorbed by the widening of Cannon Street. The Bishop of Chichester for long rented his mansion on the west side of Chancery Lane to Lincoln's Inn, selling them the freehold in 1580. 'Chichester Rents' in Chancery Lane is also now part of the Inn.

Dalton, Michael
Assigns of Richard Atkins, London, 1682. The leather has peeled back from the boards on the edges, but the binding is holding together. There is damage (insect? ) and staining to the endpapers and top corner of most of the book, but it lessens as you go through the book. Pages 195-198 are loose. The paper itself is in good condition with expected toning and some foxing. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 564, index pages; In spite of the rough condition of the book, it is an interesting look at the legal system in England in the 17th century. In the back of the book, labeled "Table," is an index to a wide variety of legal issues covered by the book. The book was originally published in 1623, and this is the fourth edition, which has been corrected and updated. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

First complete English edition of the Dutch philosopher, jurist, and theologian's legal masterpiece, De Jure Belli ac Pacis Libri Tres, first published in Paris in 1625. Considered to be the first expression of the "droit naturel", the first theorisation of "just war", and the foundation of modern international law, it had a profound influence on eighteenth-century political theorists such as Locke as well as on the arguments which supported the Glorious Revolution and the American Revolution. In his treatise Grotius puts forth his definitions of war and natural law (Book I), then argues for the identification of three just causes for war (Book II), and finally examines whether war and its combatants are bound by rules (Book III). "The questions which he put forward have come to be the basis of the ultimate view of law and society … [Click Below for Full Description]

FIRST EDITION, printed in 1682, of expanded version of Leybourn's Art of Dialling, originally issued in 1669. ¶ William Leybourn (1626-1719) mathematician, began his working life as a printer and soon became a distinguished land and quantity surveyor. Such was his prestige, he was frequently employed to survey the estates of gentlemen, and he also helped to survey the remnants of London after the great fire of 1666. A prolific and eclectic author, his work The Compleat Surveyor, which was first published under that title in 1653 is regarded as a classic of its kind and (in collaboration with Vincent Wing), the Urania Practica, printed in 1649, was the first book in English devoted to astronomy. With this volume the author cites numerous other sources: John Wells, Sciographia, or, The art of shadovves, (1635), a partial translation of Magnon, by Mr. Thomas Gibson, and the other parts are derived from the work of Samuel Foster. ¶ See: Taylor, Mathemat … [Click Below for Full Description]

Bohun, Edmund
Printed for George Wells, 1682. Octavo. xi, [2], 66 pp, [1]. Binding, gilt title. Scattered foxing. Bohun's first published work. A pro-Tory address after the Exclusion Crisis of 1679-81. The Exclusion Crisis pitted the nation against allowing James the II, a Catholic, to succeed his father, Charles II. Bohun avows the people of England to allow a Catholic king as Parliament will preserve the Constitution of England and its Protestant heritage. Bohun would publish two subsequent addresses by 1683 on the same subject. He recalled that he had been "bred a dissenter and taught betimes to fear Monarchy", but as a writer he assailed religious diversity and disloyalty to jure divino kingship. An adversary called him "as furious a Prosecutor of Protestant Dissenters as was to be found in England", although John Dunton praised him for "a wit so pregnant and prompt." STC 3445.
